According to news reports, the Special Protection Group, which provides security to the Prime Minister, has cited security concerns.

This agency reportedly fears a major stampede as there are no proper plans for emergency evacuation of the place.

The event is yet to get security, traffic, fire, and structural safety clearances. According to police officials, several issues were raised with the organisers but there was a serious lack of coordination.

Govt was forced to listen to people: Rahul Gandhi on EPF tax withdrawal

March 8, 2016 by Nasheman

rahul gandhi

New Delhi: As the government rolled back the controversial proposal to tax EPF withdrawal, Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday mounted a fresh attack on it, saying the attempt to tax the safety net of the middle class was “morally” wrong.

The Congress Vice President, in a series of tweets, said the government was forced to listen to people and roll back the “patently unfair” tax on EPF.

“Finally the Govt was forced to listen to people and roll back the patently unfair tax on EPF.

“But the attempt to tax the safety net of millions of hard working middle class people was morally wrong and shows this Govt’s anti-ppl mindset (sic)”, he said on the micro-blogging site.

In the face of all round attack, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday completely rolled back the controversial proposal.

He made a suo motu statement in the Lok Sabha during which he also announced withdrawal of imposing monetary limit for contribution, of employers to provident and superannuation fund of Rs 1.5 lakh for taking tax benefit.

Terming as “big victory” for people of the country the roll back of the proposal, Congress said Modi once again “quickly and meekly” caved into the pressure exerted by Rahul Gandhi.

Congress spokesman Sanjay Jha tweeted “Modi, ONCE AGAIN, quickly/ meekly caves in to pressure exerted by @OfficeOfRG, fighting for the common man. #EPF(sic)”.

Party’s chief spokesman Randeep Surjewala termed it as a “big victory” for people of the country.

“Modi government was forced to withdraw the anti-people measure in the wake of nationwide protests of the salaried class. It is a big victory of people (sic),” he said on the micro-blogging site.

Thousands of fish found dead in Ulsoor Lake

March 7, 2016 by Nasheman

The popular Ulsoor lake in Bengaluru saw thousands of fish being washed ashore on Monday.

The popular Ulsoor lake in Bengaluru saw thousands of fish being washed ashore on Monday.

Bengaluru: Thousands of dead fish were washed ashore today at Ulsoor lake, a popular boating site here, raising concerns about water pollution in the city.

Residents living in and around the lake were in for a shock as they found the fish heaped around, raising unbearable stink in the water body.

Several residents, who complained about the stink, said sewage from the drain flowing into the lake due to a breach in a bund had depleted oxygen levels causing the large fish kill and authorities concerned had done nothing despite complaints.

“We are not surprised…we have been warning authorities from the last two years..sewage water is getting mixed with the lake water due to a breach in a bund..,” a resident said.

A tourism spot, Ulsoor lake had been choked with water hyacinth in recent years, with government launching clean-up efforts.

The incident comes even as there is a growing concern by environmentalists over polluted lakes, exemplified by the thick froth and flames from the Yamlur lake that caused ripples in the city last year.

The cause for the large fish kill was not known.

Strand Life Sciences Announces Key Publication Demonstrating Clinical Utility of its Germline Cancer Multi-gene Test for HBOC

March 7, 2016 by Nasheman

Strand Life Sciences

Bengaluru: Strand Life Sciences, a global leader in precision medicine diagnostics announced the publication of a landmark study in the Journal of Human Genetics in a paper titled, “Detection of high frequency of mutations in a breast and/or ovarian cancer cohort: implications of embracing a multi-gene panel in molecular diagnosis in India.” http://www.nature.com/jhg/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/jhg20164a.html.

Breast and ovarian cancers are among the most frequently diagnosed forms of hereditary cancers, and leading cause of death in India. According to GLOBOCAN, 145,000 new cancer cases were diagnosed, and 70,000 deaths occurred in India in 20121. The burden of breast cancer on the Indian healthcare system has been steadily increasing, emphasizing the need for a cost-effective method for early detection of these cancers.

As part of this large study, 141 unrelated patients and families with breast or ovarian cancer were tested for mutations in 13 genes associated with high inherited risk, using Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS). 36.2% of the cases showed clear inherited risk, with the number going up to 52% for cases with a family history of breast cancer. Both numbers were higher than expected. Most were on account of mutations in the commonly tested BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. However, 28% of the mutations detected were in other genes, indicating that Strand’s multi-gene germline cancer test provides increased diagnostic sensitivity, and possibly better patient outcomes, as compared to previous approaches of testing single genes or just the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. In addition, 37% of the mutations detected have not been reported earlier in patients, indicating novel variation in the Indian population. These trends continue to hold on more than 300 further cases tested after the study was submitted.

These findings are important for patient care, as breast and ovarian cancer patients with a strong inherited risk, and their related family, can take steps for cancer prevention and increased surveillance. Recent and upcoming promising developments in systemic therapy for such patients might also yield better outcomes2. These findings also help in growing the knowledge base of genetic variants in the Indian population.

Dr. Ramesh Sarin, MBBS, MS, FRCS, a leader in the field of genetic testing and a Senior Consultant – Surgical Oncology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, said “Genetic testing using multi-gene panels will potentially be helpful in developing effective strategies for early detection, prevention, and better management of HBOC, which will have a positive impact on healthcare in India.”

Dr. Vijay Chandru, PhD, FASc, FNAE, Executive Chairman, Strand Life Sciences, said, “We are happy to announce the publication of our study on hereditary cancer risk in South Asian women in the Journal of Human Genetics. Studies such as these will provide physicians much needed evidence on clinical utility of NGS-based multi-gene panels for incorporation into routine genetic testing in clinical oncology practice.” Dr. Chandru added, “With the increased financial burden of cancer care on self-paying patients and the Indian healthcare system, our approach of using affordability as a driver of innovation has resulted in developing cost-effective genetic testing solutions, for diagnosis and early detection of Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancers (HBOC).”

Speaking about the study, Dr. Kas Subramanian, PhD, FNAE, Chief Scientific Officer, Strand Life Sciences, said “This study underscores the incidence of cancer risk mutations that are prevalent in the Indian population. In certain types of therapies, including platinum-based therapies and PARP inhibitors, where the genetic background plays an important role in treatment success, the Strand Germline Cancer Test offers the ability of identifying patients who are likely responders. More importantly, hereditary cancer genetic testing when performed in accordance with guideline-based ethical practices, coupled with expert genetic counseling consultations can greatly benefit cancer patients and their family members.”

Alleged Bajrang Dal members vandalise church in Raipur, thrash worshippers

March 7, 2016 by Nasheman

church-attack

Raipur: A group of about 15-20 youths sporting saffron bands on their forehead and allegedly belonging to right wing Hindu outfit Bajrang Dal today barged into a church on the city’s outskirts while prayers were underway and vandalised the premises and thrashed those present.

The president of Chhattisgarh’s Christian Forum Arun Pannalal alleged that the slogan-shouting attackers belonged to Bajrang Dal and that women and an infant were also not spared while the police in the state capital remained tight-lipped on their identity.

“Around 15-20 youths entered the church premises located at Kachna village while prayer was underway,” Raipur Additional Superintendent of Police Neeraj Chandrakar told PTI.

They allegedly damaged chairs, fans and other articles in the premises and even beat up the people present, he said. The accused were reportedly sporting saffron bands on their forehead, he said. They fled the spot when the police arrived, he added.

Based on the victims’ complaint, a case has been registered under sections 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt), 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class) and 147 (rioting) of the IPC, he said.

Three motorcycles belonging to the accused were seized from the spot, he said, adding efforts are on to nab the miscreants. Pannalal claimed that today’s incident was the fourth attack on a Christian place of worship in the past one month in the state.

“Around 15-20 men with saffron bands on their forehead entered the church while Sunday prayer was under way at around 12 PM, and started vandalising the premises and started breaking everything,” Pannalal said and claimed that the “Bajrang Dal youth indulged in sloganeering and were raising Jai Shree Ram slogans”.

“They started damaging chairs and fans. They did not spare women and even tore up their clothes. They also thrashed an infant,” he said. The assailants were heard accusing that people were being converted in the church, he said.

“A group of 40-50 people from downtrodden families in the village had set up the church under a tin shed, where they perform prayers every Sunday,” he said, refuting the conversion charge.

He said, “We are thankful to the police that they reached immediately and took the necessary action.”

JNU row: Delhi govt serves legal notice to TV channels for airing doctored videos

March 7, 2016 by Nasheman

Jawaharlal Nehru University

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal informed CPI(M) and JD(U) leaders that legal notices have been served to media houses which allegedly aired doctored videos of JNU students raising anti-national slogans on the night of February 9.

The delegation of CPI(M)-JD(U) leaders Monday called on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and asked him to take action against organisations which had allegedly used doctored videos “to create frenzy of anti-nationals” at JNU.

A forensic probe ordered by Delhi government on certain footages of the February 9 JNU event, in which anti-national slogans were allegedly raised, found that two of the videos were “manipulated” where voices of persons not present in the clips were added.

The delegation thanked Kejriwal for the probe and sought action against the organisations concerned based on the findings of enquiry into the clips, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said.

“We went to thank him for organising magisterial enquiry which has clearly shown the tapes were doctored. Secondly, on the basis of his (Kejriwal’s) own enquiry that the tapes were doctored, they should now proceed for action against the organisations that used these doctored tapes to create this sort of a frenzy of anti-national against JNU as a whole and against the students,” Yechury said after the meeting.

He said Kejriwal assured the delegation of action into the matter.

“He (Kejriwal) said notices have already been served to some media houses which have done this mischief,” Yechury said.

Besides Yechury, JD(U) MP K C Tyagi was part of the delegation that met Kejriwal.

ED registers money laundering case against Mallya, others

March 7, 2016 by Nasheman

Vijay Mallya

Mumbai: In fresh trouble for liquor baron Vijay Mallya, the Enforcement Directorate has registered a money laundering case against him and others in connection with the alleged default of over Rs 900 crore loan from IDBI bank.

Official sources said the agency recently filed charges under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) based on an FIR registered last year by CBI in the same case.

They said while the ED’s zonal office here has registered the case, sleuths are also looking at the overall financial structure of the now defunct Kingfisher airlines and a separate probe under foreign exchange violation charges could also be initiated.

“Mallya and others will soon be questioned. The agency has collected relevant documents from concerned authorities and the bank in question,” they said.

The ED has pressed charges under various sections of the PMLA against Mallya and others named in the CBI complaint.

The CBI had booked Mallya, director of Kingfisher Airlines, the company, A Raghunathan, Chief Financial Officer of the airlines, and unknown officials of IDBI Bank in its FIR alleging that the loan was sanctioned in violation of norms regarding credit limits.

The CBI action came as part of its wide probe into criminal aspects of loans declared to be non-performing assets by public sector banks.

The ED is looking into the “proceeds of crime” that would have been generated using the slush funds of the alleged loan fraud, they said.

While a DRT order is expected in this case today, ex-Kingfisher airlines employees have also gone public against Mallya and the company alleging they have been cheated of their remuneration and service benefits.

Mallya had yesterday said he is making efforts to reach a ‘one-time settlement’ with banks through additional payments to the lenders, even as he denied “personally” being a “borrower or judgement defaulter” and alleged that “disinformation campaign” was being played to make him a “poster boy” of all bad loans.

The debt-laden airlines had stopped operations in October 2012.
