Karnataka: IPS officer Alok Kumar for link with lottery mafia, CID interrogates him for nine hours

May 25, 2015 by Nasheman

Alok Kumar

Bengaluru: Following the preliminary investigation conducted by Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the Karnataka government on Saturday, May 23 suspended Additional Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar for his alleged connections with illegal lotteries and the cricket betting mafia.

The CID had submitted its report to the government regarding the case after which the suspension order was announced.

However, responding to media, Alok Kumar has denied his involvement with illegal lottery kingpin Pari Rajan, and cricket bookies in Mumbai.

Police officer Alok Kumar was reportedly named by the CID for allegedly obstructing the arrest of the illegal lottery racket kingpin, Pari Rajan.

The report claimed that Alok Kumar had tried to stall the arrest of Rajan in the second week of May when a police sub-inspector went to the latter’s house in Bangarpet to arrest him. Kumar had allegedly contacted the SI twice over phone to exert pressure asking him not to arrest Rajan despite the fact that he was not the SI’s supervising officer.

CID interrogates IPS officer for nine hours

A day after the suspension of IPS officer Alok Kumar, the Criminal Investigation Department which is probing the illegal lottery scam in the State interrogated him for nearly nine hours on Sunday, May 24.

A questionnaire was given to Kumar after he reached the CID headquarters for the closed-door interrogation. There were various questions which focused on the nature of relationship between the kingpin of the racket Pari Rajan and Kumar, revealed a source in CID.

Sources also revealed that the former additional commissioner (West), is learnt to have acknowledged his links with Rajan but denied knowing or helping in Rajan’s illegal business.

It is said that the CID would continue the questioning on Monday too.

The Karnataka government on Saturday, May 23 suspended officer Alok Kumar for his links with the alleged operator of an illegal lottery business. The CID report had accused Kumar of trying to prevent the arrest of Pari Rajan, who is allegedly a key player in the racket.

Help him aiding prisoners who are detained in jails for unreasonably long periods

May 24, 2015 by Nasheman

Faiz Akram Pasha

Bengaluru: City based NGO Janasadbhawana that works with jail inmates is going through financial crunch. Janasadbhawana, started by social activist Faiz Akram Pasha, is on a mission to reform small-time offenders languishing in jails, get them out legally and rehabilitate them in order to promote a peaceful society, whilst advocating for justice in prisons.

The NGO has now turned to crowd-funding to raise money for the noble cause.

As more and more individuals and startup companies are turning to crowd-funding to bring their projects to light, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in India are not far behind. One look at the country’s major crowd-funding sites would reveal the effectiveness of social networking in mobilising mass support for a cause. According to the website Ketto, an estimated Rs 4 crores has been raised so far, on their site by different aid agencies as part of their relief effort for Nepal.

For the uninitiated, crowd-funding is an online phenomenon that allows anybody with a few rupees to spare to contribute toward a cause or project seeking cash. Anybody with an idea can go to one of dozen of specialized crowdfunding websites and appeal to the general public for donations.

Janasadbhawana

Bungaluru-based NGO Janasadbhawana is testing waters with the power of the crowd and technology.

Though Faiz himself has been working for this cause since his days in college, he founded his NGO in 2006, at the insistence of B. S. Abbai (ex-DIG Prisons), who he refers to as his mentor. Since its inception, he and his group of volunteers have helped the release and rehabilitation of over 450 inmates, by paying their pending fine amount and in some cases, also finding them jobs.

Many such ex-prisoners now work as volunteers of the organisation, according to him.

Lack of funds

Although Faiz has received a lot of recognition for his work as a champion of prisoners’ rights, including Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed Khan Award by the Al-Ameen Educational Society, however, like many other activists and social workers, he has no financial backing or support.

According to his fellow activist and Bengaluru Youth Award winner Mansoor Chetlu, “People like Faiz get too many words of appreciation, but what they actually need is support, to continue their work.”

Mansoor, who spoke to TCN, said that he has started a fundraising campaign on NotforProfit.in – A nonprofit social advocacy and crowdfunding website, to raise Rs. 30,000 to help Faiz with his work.

He says the amount will help the organisation to bail out at least three prisoners, and help Faiz with other miscellaneous expenses, which is usually associated with running an NGO.

Advocate Sultan Beary, who has agreed to take up the cases of undertrial prisoners Janasadbhawana is working with, says, “The cases of undertrials is something every citizen of this country should be concerned about. Our inaction reflects our apathy.”

Bengaluru: Even as AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa returned to power today, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the state law department is examining the judgement of the High Court which acquitted her of all charges and the government would take a decision on filing an appeal in the case after receiving the report.

“Our law department is examining the judgement of Karnataka High Court. After getting the report from law department, we will decide,” Siddaramaiah told reporters here.

Asked whether he has spoken to AICC in this regard, the chief minister said, “No, the High command is not at all interfering in the state matters”.

Jayalalithaa was disqualified following her conviction in the Rs 66.66 crore disproportionate assets case by a trial court in Bengaluru on September 27. The Karnataka High Court had subsequently acquitted her of the charges on May 11 this year.

She was today sworn in for the fifth time as chief minister, nearly eight months after she was forced to quit over corruption charges.

Movie Review: 'Poltergeist' is a shocking scary fare

May 23, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Poltergeist-2015

Producer: Roy Lee, Sam Raimi and Robert G. Tapert
Director: Gil Kenan
Star Cast: Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jarred Harris, Jane Adams, Saxon Sharbino, Kyle Ketlett, Kennedi Clements, Nicholas Braun, Susan Heyward & Soma Bhatia
Genre: Fantasy Horror
Verdict: Good

There are some directors who stick to one particular genre of filmmaking and Gil Kenan happens to be one of them. Amongst the scores of horror movies that he has churned out. The most talked about one was an animated horror movie named Monster House. And his present directorial venture is Poltergiest which in itself is the 1982 remake of the same name.

Plot: It is the contemporized classic tale about a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces. When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever.

Aces: The shockingly scary scenes in the haunted house which are really spine chilling.

Minuses: The current Poltergiest movie does not exactly lives up to the reputation of the earlier version.

Last Word: Go watch Poltergiest if you are a diehard fans of horror movies.

Movie Review: 'Tomorrowland' is a crazy rollercoster ride

May 23, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Tomorrowland

Producer: Brad Bird, Damon Lindelof and Jeffrey Chemov
Director: Brad Bird
Star Cast: George Clooney, Thomas Robinson, Hugh Laurie, Britt Robertson, Raffey Cassidy Tim McGraw, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan – Micheal Key, Chris Baur, Pierce Gagnon Mathew Maccaull, Judy Greer & Gary Chalk
Genre: Sci-Fi
Verdict: Blockbuster

Director Brad Bird, basically an animator, has tackled a science fiction genre heavily diluted with pure fantasy, in his latest offering Tommorrowland. No doubt it ultimately turns out to be a rivetingly mysterious adventure that keeps the viewers spell bound from start to finish.

Plot: Bound by a shared destiny, a former boy genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embarks on a danger filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world and them forever.

Aces: Its subtle humour, exciting thrills and visual delights

Minuses: The performances of most of the actors are routine barring George Clooney, Thomas Robinson and Britt Robertson

Last Word: Don’t miss this theme park based movie, maybe a finale summer treat for kids.

Six months later, Pentagon admits (maybe) we killed some kids in Syria

May 23, 2015 by Nasheman

While notable for admitting the possibility it killed two young children, admission called “too little, too late” by expert who says deathtoll of innocent people far exceeds Pentagon statement

by Jon Queally, Common Dreams

In what one journalist described as the “first near-confirmation” of civilian deaths caused by U.S.-led airstrikes inside Syria, an official announcement by the Pentagon on Thursday that one of its bombs “likely led” to the death of two young children was met by derision and suspicion by experts who say the real deathtoll of innocent people killed in such strikes far exceeds the U.S. military’s tepid admission.

The acknowledgement of the deaths was included in a report stemming from an internal investigation conducted by the Pentagon into specific bombings that took place on or around November 5 of last year near the Syrian town of Aleppo. According to the U.S. military, the strikes were aimed not at Islamic State (ISIS) militants—the group used by President Obama to initially justify U.S. airstrikes in the Syria—but rather another militant group operating in the country known as the Khorasan group. Despite early and repeated denials surrounding the incident and a six-month long probe, the report itself states that a “preponderance of the evidence” found by the investigators suggest the bombing “likely led to the deaths of two non-combatant children.”

However, in the wake of the official statement, investigative journalist Chris Woods, who has extensively tracked the civilian impact caused by U.S. drone attacks and airstrikes around the world, was quoted by the Guardian as saying the U.S. admission was simply “too little, too late.”

Woods, who has reported for the Bureau of Investigative Journalism and more recently founded Airwars.org, a not-for-profit transparency project aimed at tracking and archiving the international air war against ISIS, said its inconceivable that U.S. military needed six months to investigate the incident and that its finding ignore widely available and key evidence. Citing his own research, Woods said last November’s attack may have killed up to four children, including five-year-old Daniya Ali al-Haj Qaddour.

“I am absolutely sure that Daniya was killed [in the November strike],” Woods said, adding that her mother and brother were also severely wounded in the bombing. The facts about this case “have been in the public domain for six months,” Woods continued, pointing to images and details of the children’s deaths which circulated on social media in the days immediately following their deaths. “I can’t see a conceivable benefit to to waiting six months to confirm this.”

According to the Guardian:

Thursday’s admission comes after several months of denials by the US that any civilians had been killed in either Syria or Iraq during the coalition’s campaign. But watchdog groups, like the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, warn that many more civilian casualties have gone uncounted. By SOHR’s count, at least66 civilians have been killed by coalition air strikes in Syria alone since last September.

A family of five was killed in April in a suspected coalition-led air strike in Iraq, the Guardian has reported.

Since 8 August, the US-led coalition, which includes, Canada, Britain, France, Jordan and other countries, has carried out several thousand air strikes as part of the campaign to “degrade and ultimately destroy” the Islamic State militant group, which last year declared it had established a caliphate across vast swaths of Iraq and Syria. The coalition has launched nearly 4,000 air strikes in both Iraq and Syria.

Earlier this month, Al-Jazeera was among those who reported on a U.S. airstrike in northern Syria which may have killed more than fifty civilians. In a response to the Pentagon’s Thursday anouncement posted on Airwars.org, the monitoring group said it will soon publish its own major report on civilians allegedly killed by the coalition since U.S.-led bombing in both Iraq and Syria began last August. It said:

Our provisional findings show that between 384 and 753 civilians have been reported killed in some 97 problem incidents, according to local and international media, and Iraqi and Syrian monitoring groups.

Verifying these claims can be extremely difficult. Most areas being bombed by the coalition are occupied by Islamic State. Civic society has often collapsed, and local people live in fear of retaliation for speaking out. Even so, evidence linking the coalition to civilian deaths can often be compelling.

“The first claims of civilian deaths from coalition actions emerged just days after air strikes began in August 2014,” said Woods. “Since then, hundreds of likely non-combatant deaths have occurred, many in incidents better documented than the November 5th incident which CENTCOM has now conceded.”

Despite the fact the children were killed during the airstrike, U.S. Army Lt. Gen. James Terry, commander of the military operations against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, said that “From the investigation it can be determined that sound procedures were followed and must be followed in the future.”

ISIL claims responsibility for Saudi mosque attack

May 23, 2015 by Nasheman

At least 21 people killed after suicide bomber detonates explosives during Friday prayers in Qatif province.

Qatif

by Al Jazeera

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group has claimed in an online statement that it carried out a deadly suicide bomb attack at a mosque in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province of Qatif.

The statement said “the soldiers of the Caliphate” were behind Friday’s attack by a suicide bomber “who detonated an explosives belt” in the mosque in the Shia-majority city of Qatif.

The group identified the bomber as Abu Amer al-Najdi, and published a picture of him.

Earlier on Friday, the Saudi interior ministry said in a statement that a suicide bomber had set off an explosion during weekly prayers at a Shia mosque, leaving at least 21 dead.

“It has been established that an individual detonated a bomb he was wearing under his clothes during Friday prayers at Ali Ibn Abi Taleb mosque in Kudeih in Qatif province,” the statement, which was carried by the official SPA news agency, said.

The ministry spokesman called the attack an act of terrorism, vowing that “Security authorities will spare no effort in the pursuit of all those involved in this terrorist crime”.

Pictures posted on social media purported to show the devastation, with dead bodies strewn across the floor and shattered glass covering the courtyard of the mosque.

Saudi Arabia’s Shia population is mostly based in two oasis districts of the Eastern Province, Qatif on the Gulf coast, and al-Ahsa, southwest of the provincial capital al-Khobar.

The community accounts for between 10 to 15 percent of the total population.

The attack was the first to target the Shia community in Saudi Arabia since November when gunmen killed at least eight people in an attack on a religious anniversary celebration, also in the east.

India’s government has withdrawn Delhi’s nomination for UNESCO world heritage city over concerns that it would have hampered “infrastructure and construction” plans in the capital.

The government decision came nearly a month before UNESCO was to review nominations from across the world. There are 38 other entries that will be examined by the UN body in the German city of Bonn between June 28 and July 8.

“Once the city comes into that heritage list, you are unable to make some construction in the city plans and land use plans, so it will become difficult. With that view the government has taken a decision to withdraw the nomination,” Mahesh Sharma, India’s culture minister, told the local NDTV news channel.

The previous government had filed the initial nomination in 2012 and the final dossier, prepared by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), was sent in January last year.

People on social media criticised the government move as Delhi’s heritage sites lure tourists from across the world.

IPL: CSK beat RCB by three wickets to reach final

May 23, 2015 by Nasheman

IPL

Ranchi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) reached the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the sixth time as they defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by three wickets in the qualifier 2 of the Twenty20 tournament at the JSCA International Cricket Stadium here on Friday.

Put in to bat, two-time runners-up RCB could only manage a modest total of 139/8 with left-handed opener Chris Gayle top-scoring with 41. Sarfaraz Khan also played a handy innings of 31. Left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra was the pick of the bowlers for CSK as he picked up 3/28 from his four overs.

In reply of the small target, two-time champions CSK were driven by a patient knock from veteran Michel Hussey, who scored 56 from 46 balls. The left-hander shared a useful 47-run stand with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (26) to help his side reach home with three wickets and a ball to spare.

With this win, CSK set up Sunday’s title clash with Mumbai Indians, who won the qualifier 1 against the same opponents on Tuesday.

Earlier, veteran pacer Nehra once again came good for CSK as he clinched 3/28 in his four overs, including the vital wickets of RCB skipper Virat Kohli (12) and explosive batsman AB de Villiers (1).

Nehra was well assisted by off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who ended with brilliant bowling figures of 4-0-13-1, scalping Mandeep Singh (4). The duo did not allow the RCB batsmen to accelerate at all.

Though left-handed opener Chris Gayle top-scored with 41, it wasn’t his usual innings as he played 43 balls and hit only two boundaries and three sixes.

Two important cameos from wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik (28) and Sarfaraz Khan (31) helped augment RCB’s total at the end, but the top order failed to make an impact when it mattered the most.

Good bowling changes and field placements by CSK skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni also proved significant as Mohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and Dwayne Bravo also clinched a wicket each to slow down the run rate and restrict RCB to 139/8.

During the chase, CSK also didn’t get a good start as their West Indian aggressive batsman Dwayne smith (17) pulled medium pacer Sreenath Aravind it to Mitchell Starc at deep square leg.

At this time, CSK were 21/1 in 3.1 overs and they could have lost their second wicket in the next delivery had Chris Gayle had not dropped Faf du Plessis, who edged to first slip in the very first ball he faced.

CSK had luck on their side on another occasion as RCB’s David Wiese induced an edge off opener Michael Hussey, who was then on 11, only for it was to be dropped by wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik.

However, du Plessis failed to grab the chance and went back to the dug-out after being bowled by leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal in the second ball of the 10th over. The South African right-hander made 21.

Two deliveries later, Chahal gave another blow to CSK by removing Suresh Raina (0). The Indian left-hander offered a catch to Wiese at long-off to leave CSK struggling at 61/3.

However, Hussey kept the scoreboard ticking with ones, twos and odd boundaries before he played it to the hands of Harshal Patel off Wiese.

With 32 still required in 21 deliveries and skipper Dhoni not in his best of forms, it seemed RCB had a chance. But Dhoni and Pawan Negi (12 in six balls) ensured that they enter the final for the fourth time in the last five years.

Following this win, CSK proceed to the final to be played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday against 2013 champions Mumbai.
