IT officials raid three Karnataka MLCs including CM’s Political Secretary

Bengaluru: Income Tax Department has conducted raids on the residences of three Legislative Council Members, including the residence of Political Secretary to Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, on Tuesday morning in Bengaluru, according to TV reports.

Income tax sleuths have raided the house of Political secretary to Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah MLC Govindaraju and an Independent MLC D U Mallikarjun.

Also, JD (S) MLC C R Manohar, who is producing Rs 100 crore Kannada flick ”Kali” came under the IT lens early morning.

RSS leader murdered in Mysuru; BJP calls for bandh

Mysuru: The Bharatiya Janata Party and other Hindutva groups are trying to impose a forceful bandh in Mysuru on Monday in protest against the death of a BJP worker in a clash on Sunday.

Raju (30), an electrical contractor, was murdered at Lal Bahadur Shastry Circle on M G Road under Udayagiri police station limits by a gang of three persons. The incident triggered tension in parts of the city.

It is said that Raju, along with his friend Jayakumar, was drinking tea at a roadside shop, when three bike-borne people arrived and attacked Raju with lethal weapons, before fleeing from the spot. Raju, who sustained severe injuries on his face and ears, died on the spot.

According to police, Raju, a resident of Kyatamaranahalli in the city, had left home on Sunday morning to meet his friends. Following the incident, a large crowd had gathered in front of the K R Hospital mortuary demanding police to arrest the accused immediately.

As news of the murder spread, a large number of party supporters and workers gathered at the K.R. Hospital mortuary, resulting in tension for some time. Commissioner of Police B. Dayananda rushed to the spot and there were arguments between the police the party supporters.

A few people in the crowd also tried to gherao Police Commissioner. Security has been tightened near the mortuary.

Meanwhile, condemning the murder, BJP state unit president Pralhad Joshi said the BJP would support the Mysuru city bandh called on Monday. Accusing the police of failure to prevent such an incident, he demanded that the culprits be arrested at the earliest.

No intention to change reservation policy: Government

New Delhi: The government on Monday reiterated in the Rajya Sabha that it does not intend to change the reservation policy in the country.

The clarification came as the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party sought to know from the government about the issue, after the RSS said demand for reservation by the affluent sections of society only reflected deviation from the spirit of the Constitution.

The issue was raised soon after the house met, but Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien said the RSS is a private organisation and members should not be concerned.

“There is no difference in RSS and government,” Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav said while describing it as a “conspiracy to end reservation”.

BSP leader Mayawati alleged it was a plan for systematic destruction of reservation.

Leader of the House Arun Jaitley, however, clarified that the government has no intention to end reservation.

“The government policy is clear, reservation will continue… And the proposal you are talking about does not say what you are saying,” said Jaitley.

Mayawati, however, said that the RSS has sought reservation on economic, and not social basis.

“I want to remind the leader of the house, in Indian constitution… there are three criteria – social, education and economic backwardness. Sadly, every other day RSS is giving statement that reservation should be given on economic basis and not social,” she said, to which Jaitley immediately responded: “This is not going to happen.”

The RSS on Sunday said demands for reservation by the affluent sections of society only reflected deviation from the spirit of the Constitution.

“Reservation has helped weaker sections of the society and if the affluent sections demand reservation, it does not sound good,” RSS general secretary Bhaiyyaji Joshi told media persons at Nagaur, Rajasthan.

Dalit youth hacked to death for marrying upper-caste girl

Coimbatore: A young couple, whose inter-caste marriage was opposed by their families, was Monday brutally attacked by a gang with sickles in full public view in nearby Tirupur district, resulting in the death of the husband.

When Shankar (22) and Kausalya (19), hailing from Palani in Dindigul district, were waiting at the Udumalpet bus stand, a group of armed men came on a motorcycle andhacked them with sickles before fleeing, police said.

Police rushed the profusely bleeding couple to the Government Hospital here. While Shankar died on the way, Kausalya’s condition is said to be critical, and she is undergoing treatment, they added.

The couple, said to be from different castes, had fallen in love and had got married despite opposition from their families just eight months ago and the gang was reportedly related to the girl, they said.

Further investigations are on, police added.

Health Ministry bans 344 drugs including Corex cough syrup

New Delhi: Health Ministry has banned about 344 fixed dose combination drugs, including cough syrups compositions, saying they involve “risk” to humans and safer alternatives were available.

The ban on the drugs comes into immediate effect and the ministry has come out with a gazette notification regarding the matter.

“Altogether 344 such fixed dose combinations have been banned. We have tried to bring objectivity to the issue by roping in the best of scientists to study the effects.

“Show cause notices were also issued to more than 344 companies and they were given time to make further representations after the expert committee gave their recommendations,” a senior Health Ministry official said.

“Some of them did not even care to respond. Everybody was given ample opportunity. After that, the move was initiated. It was done after much examination,” the official said.

According to the notification, the matter has been examined by an expert committee appointed by the Central government.

“On the basis of recommendations of the said expert committee, the Central government is satisfied that it is necessary and expedient in public interest to regulate by way of prohibition of manufacture for sale, sale and distribution for human use of the said drugs in the country,” the notification said.

The 344 banned drugs include the fixed dose combination of Chlopheniramine Maleate and Codeine syrup sold under the popular cough syrup brand Corex.

Following the government ban, pharmaceutical major Pfizer has discontinued manufacture and sale of Corex with immediate effect.

“This is to inform you that the Government of India vide notification…dated March 10, 2016…has prohibited the manufacture for sale, sale and distribution of fixed dose combination of Chlopheniramine Maleate plus Codeine Syrup with immediate effect.

“In view of this, the company has discontinued the manufacture and sale of its drug Corex with immediate effect,” Pfizer said in a BSE filing today.

Fixed dose combination drugs are combinations of two or more active drugs in a single dose form.

Movie Review: ‘Phuntroo’ is quite an interesting science fiction oriented love story

Plot: Vira (Madan Deodhar) is a brilliant young engineering student who stumbles upon a peculiar gadget designed by one of his professors. A competition titled ‘Gadget Day’ has the students competing for the best new gadget and everybody is coming up with schemes on how to win. Anaya (Ketaki Mategaonkar) is the college’s secretary and a gifted student who catches Vira’s eye. He falls in love with her, but alas it’s unrequited. He goes on to develop the gadget he found and creates an Artificial Intelligence entity, a figure that resembles both in physical form and voice, his one true love, Anaya. Chaos ensues when he tries to hide it from his friends.

Aces: Director Sujay Dahake has made a very gripping science fiction thriller in which the younger generation of actors have put their best foot forward in their individual characters assigned to them and the best of the lot is of course the lead pair of Madan Deodhar & Ketaki Mategaonkar.

Minuses: Phuntroo is a love story based on a backdrop of a science fiction thriller which is quite new and perhaps unacceptable to the stereotyped Marathi audiences who are still fond of their staple diet of lavani’s and tamashas.

Last Word: Yet all said & done the multiplexes’ city audiences are definitely going to like this daringly different movie.

Movie Review: ‘Anuraag’ is emotionally very engaging

Verdict: GOOD

Plot: Rishabh (Dharmendra Gohil), a successful businessman, has married Saumya (Mrunmayee Deshpande) after the death of his 1st wife and has a daughter from the 1st marriage. Saumya used to be his secretary and slipped into the new role comfortably. The 1st setback was the difficulties during her pregnancy, and the relationship spiralled downwards from that point. All this forms a part of the back-story glimpsed through some key flashback sequences. A majority of the film happens during their Leh visit, a last ditch effort to save the marriage, with a possibility for things to go either way.

Aces: The film is emotionally very engaging in fact director Dr. Ambarish Darak has made an extremely sensitive film on marital relationship which sometimes end up in marital discord and then the characters more often than not try reliving their happier moments through their memories.

Minuses: The film though inspired by Hollywood director Richard Linklater’s film Before Twilight lacks conviction in over all presentation. The fault lies mainly in its screen writing part.

Last Word: On the whole Anuraag reflects more of a serious kind of cinema and may appeal to the elite multiplex and fest circuit audiences, but it is hardly a common man’s cup of tea.

Movie Review: ‘Triple 9’ be prepared for extreme violence

Plot: In Triple 9, a crew of dirty cops is blackmailed by the Russian mob to execute a virtually impossible heist and the only way to pull it off is to manufacture a 999, police code for “officer down.” Their plan is turned upside down when the unsuspecting rookie they set up to die foils the attack, triggering a breakneck action – packed finale tangled with double – crosses, greed & revenge.

Aces: The only redeeming aspect of this movie is its power packed ensemble cast, all of whom have proved their histrionic brilliance without any doubt.

Minuses: Too much of mindless violence. Men are being shot at close range constantly with their heads blown of like pumpkins. That apart lots of F word is being used in every scene nay every single second.

Last Word: Strictly recommended only for action lover fans.

Soldiers are actually dying because of politicians: Shehla Rashid

Bengaluru: Who is responsible for the death of brave soldiers like Lance Naik Hanmanthappa, asked Shehla Rashid Shora, vice-president, JNU Students Union, who was in the City on Friday.

“Soldiers think they are dying for the country but they are actually dying for politicians. Border disputes are kept alive. Politicians and bureaucrats talk to each other in top hotels. All this is a farce,” Shehla, who was here on an invitation from the Journalists’ Study Centre, Karnataka, said.

Shehla became the first Kashmiri to win the JNU elections that were held last year. An engineering graduate, she has also done a short course on “India-Women Leadership” from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. She now studies at the Centre for the Study of Law and Governance, JNU.

Even as JNU president Kanhaiya Kumar stoked fresh controversy with his comments about the army raping women in Kashmir, Shehla reiterated that JNUSU supported soldiers.

The argument, she however said, was much more than that. “We are with the soldiers and any pro-soldier approach is anti-war. However, we need to rethink a number of issues such as the way the arms trade is being conducted and the defence budget is being reduced,” she said, implying that this endangered soldiers’ lives. At the same time, JNUSU does not shy away from raising slogans against long-standing issues involving the army such as the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and custodial rapes, she added.

Shehla, who affiliates herself with the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation, said she did have political aspirations, but for the moment there were “broader challenges”. “We contest elections and many of our members have been contesting elections from Bihar. At the moment, we are about saving the ideals of the Constitution. This government has been anti-dalit, anti-women and anti-poor. It is trying to wipe out any opposition as evident even in the FTII,” she said.

While everyone was busy hounding students from the JNU for their “anti-national” slogans, Akbar Chaudhry, another student leader highlighted the part played by JNU students in a number of recent movements. “During the Nirbhaya protests, we were at the forefront. At the ‘Occupy UGC (University Grants Commission)’ movement, we protested for 100 days. Even during the Rohith Vemula’s incident, we were on a hunger strike,” he said.

Modi lavishes praise on Art of Living, its cultural festival

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday termed the Art of Living’s World Culture Festival event at the Yamuna flood plain here as an “art maha kumbh” and said India can fulfill needs of the world through its cultural heritage only if there is no constant internal criticism.

Speaking at the inaugural event of the festival, which had run into and faced a case in National Green Tribunal, Modi profusely praised the even as well as the Art of Living (AoL).

In his speech AoL founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, took a dig at those who were opposing the event as his “private party”.

“Of course, it is my private party. The entire world is my family,” he said, recalling Sanskrit phrase “vasudhaiva kutumbakam”, which means “the world is one family”, as one of the loftiest Vedic thoughts.

Showers lashed the venue just before the inaugural event of the three-day cultural extravaganza, throwing some preparations into disarray. The show could not be screened on screens put up at the venue estimated to be spread over 1,000 acres.

The evening saw chanting of Vedic mantras, and Indian classical performances by thousands of artistes. The Art of Living Grand Orchestra saw participation of an estimated 8,500 artists, organisers said.

Several international leaders including from UAE and France took part in the event. A message was read on behalf of Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Modi began his address by terming Sri Sri Ravi Shankar as “param pujay gurudev” (revered guru).

Modi said world was not only linked through economic interests but also throuugh “human values.” He said India has heritage which is needed by the world.

“We can fulfill needs of the world in some ways but we can do so if we have pride in our herigtage. If we keep criticising ourselves, if we find faults daily, what will the world see towards us,” Modi said.

He said Art of Living had spread to over 150 countries in its 35 years. Modi said AoL has helped shape a distinct identity of India. “Today we have seen a kumbh festival. This is kumbh mela of art,” Modi said.

The Art of Living event on the Yamuna flood plain has been slammed by some environmentalists for violation of environment norms. The National Green Tribunal has imposed an environmental compensation of Rs.5 crore on AoL for the event.

Modi also said that “soft power” plays an important role in international relations.

He said that practise of music has potential to influence mind.

“When we face resistance in life, we will need Art of Living, when we pursue our dreams we need Art of Living and when we move from myself towards the common cause of us, we need Art of Living,” he told a large gathering including a large number of participants and dignitaries from various parts of the world.

Appreciating Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s services in last 35 years, Modi said: “Once I was overwhelmed when I got a grand reception in Mongolia at an event organised by Art of Living Foundation.”

Ravi Shanker, in his speech, made a veiled reference to the criticism of the event and the challenges his organisation faced and said when “something great is done, many obstacles come”.

“It only indicates it is very very significant work we have undertaken,” Ravi Shanker said.

“Let’s create peace and harmony. Today it seems the dream of vasudhev kutumbakkam has come alive,” he added.
