Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani, 400 Patidars detained, ahead of Modi’s birthday celebrations

September 17, 2016 by Nasheman

jignesh mevani

Ahmedabad: Minutes before the arrival of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the city airport on Friday, Dalit agitation leader Jignesh Mevani was taken into preventive detention by officials of the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), Ahmedabad. Deputy commissioner of police, DCB, Deepan Bhadran said Mevani was detained from the airport following an “input”, which he did not disclose. “He was detained following a specific input. He is being questioned and will be released soon,” Bhadran said.

The events unfolded around 8.15 pm at the arrival point of the airport where Jignesh’s cousin Viral was waiting to receive him. Jignesh who was coming from Delhi where he attended a rally.

“As soon as he (Jignesh) came out, around 25 policemen in plainclothes asked him to sit in their vehicle. When I asked them to let me talk to Jignesh, they told me that it was a police matter and I should not interfere,” said Viral.

Following the assault on seven Dalits by gau rakshaks in Una taluka of Gir-Somnath district on July 11, Mevani and his friends formed two groups — Dalit Atyachar Ladat Samiti and Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch (RDAM) — to hold protest events and campaign for Dalit empowerment in Gujarat.

He had given a call to gherao the office of Dholka Prant Officer in Ahmedabad district on Saturday, demanding a written undertaking from the state government to give possession of hundreds of acres of land allocated to Dalits, “only on paper without physical possession”, under the provisions of the Agriculture Land Ceiling Act.

Last Wednesday, at a public event in Vejalpur area of Ahmedabad, he had announced to launch a “rail roko andolan” at different places in Gujarat and also claimed that 20 national and state-level activists would join him.

In the same programme, he had also cited a number of reasons to why Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Limkheda function on September 17 (Saturday) “could be disrupted”.

On Friday, before leaving Delhi for Ahmedabad, Mevani had sent text messages to his friends here, stating that he had announced at Jantar Mantar that the rail roko andolan would be launched on October 1 from Modi’s former assembly constituency Maninagar in Ahmedabad. In the text message, he added that those who could not join the agitation could indulge in pulling the chain of the train.

Meanwhile, around 100 Dalits gathered outside the DCB headquarters in Raikhad area of Ahmedabad, shouting slogans for Mevani’s immediate release.

Police also detained around 400 members of Hardik Patel-led Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti across Gujarat on Friday, a day before the PM’s events in the state to mark his 67th birthday. Patidar agitators have threatened to stage protest in Navsari during the PM’s event, after they did not get permission to meet him to push for their demands.

NA case: 5 years imprisonment for 13 on terror charge

September 17, 2016 by Nasheman

NIA

Bengaluru: An NIA court here today sentenced 13 members of Laskar-e-Toiba and Harkat-ul-Jihad-E-Islami to five years imprisonment for plotting to eliminate politicians, police officials and journalists in 2012.

After the accused pleaded guilty, Special Judge for NIA cases C Muralidhar Pai pronounced the verdict and said since they had already spent three-and-a-half years in jail, they would have to serve the remaining one-and-half years term.

He also directed them to pay a total of Rs 31,000 as fine.

The Special National Investigation Agency Court had yesterday completed the final hearing.

In a crackdown ahead of Republic Day in 2012, the 13 were arrested by NIA for allegedly plotting attacks in different parts of the country.

The arrests followed simultaneous searches and raids at 12 locations in six cities – Bengaluru, Tumkur, Mangaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Lucknow, on January 22, with the support of local police.

Circuits for detonating explosives were recovered during the searches.

NIA had recovered alleged “incriminating’ articles, including laptops, unaccounted cash, jihadi literature, videos and certain material for preparation of bombs from these places.

The agency had in 2012 received information that certain individuals from various cities in the country were in the process of organising themselves to commit terrorist acts in different parts of the country.

Of the 13 convicts, four are from Karnataka.

While Syed Mujahid is a resident of Tumkur, Asif Ali alias Arman Saani, Suhail Ahmed alias Sohail alias Hafes Saab and Muhammed Abdul Ahad alias Bade Amir alias Sulaiman are from Bengaluru.

Others included 20-year-old Mohammad Aleem (from Lucknow), Mohammed Obedullah Khan alias Obaid alias Talha and Abu Anas, both from Hyderabad, and Mohammad Hussain Khan alias Jamil, resident of Mazgaon, Mumbai.

Hindutva goons kill Muslim youth in Gujarat

September 17, 2016 by Nasheman

Mohammad Ayyub Mev

Ahmedabad: A 25-year-old Muslim youth, who was brutally thrashed by cow vigilantes on September 13, died at a hospital here today, police said.

Mohammad Ayyub Mev was admitted to V S Hospital after he was thrashed by unidentified persons on S G Highway on the night of September 13 after his car met with an accident.

A calf which he was allegedly carrying in the car died in the mishap. Ayyub’s brother Imran alleged that he was beaten up on the suspicion that he was transporting cows for slaughter.

“Ayyub’s car met with an accident on SG Highway on the night of September 13. When some bystanders checked the car, they found a calf and a bullock. Due to the impact, the calf died while the bullock was rescued. To save himself from people’s wrath, Ayyub started running,” said inspector P B Rana of Anandnagar police station here.

“Since he tried to run away, some persons caught him and thrashed him. We had lodged a case of attempt to murder against the mob. Now as he has died of injuries we will file FIR for murder. No one is arrested yet,” said Rana, adding the previous FIR did not name any specific person associated with cow protection groups.

However, Ayyub’s brother Imran alleged that assailants were cow vigilantes.”Those who killed my brother were indeed gau rakshaks. My brother was not carrying any cow. Out of some grudge, these gau rakshaks mercilessly thrashed him. We want the police to nab the real culprits,” said Imran.

The BJP-ruled state was rocked by a huge controversy in July when some Dalit youths were flogged in public by cow vigilantes at Una.

Cauvery protests: SC to hear plea over maintaining law and order in Karnataka, TN

September 15, 2016 by Nasheman

Cauvery

Bengaluru: The Supreme Court today will hear a plea seeking a direction to the Centre and the state governments of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to maintain law and order in the wake of the massive protests over the Cauvery water distribution row. Activist Shivkumar, who is a petitioner in the case, has sought the apex court’s intervention.

Cauvery

Yesterday, Shivkumar had appealed to a bench headed by Chief Justice T. S. Thakur to hear the matter related to the two states urgently, adding that on September 15, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu would be observing state-wide shutdowns. He sought the apex court’s direction to the Centre and both states to take strict action against those who are involved in violence and to provide security to private and public properties and citizens of both states.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had earlier urged the protesters not to damage public property, adding that the order of the Supreme Court is hard to follow, but “we will still follow it”. The apex court had on Monday modified its September 5 order, directing the Karnataka government to release 15000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu. It directed the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government to release 12000 cusecs of water for farmers.

However, the development did not sit well with pro-Kannada protesters who vandalised public property and set several vehicles on fire, protesting against the order.

Movie Review: Freaky Ali is a not to be missed interesting sports adventure film

September 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Freaky Ali

Banner: Sohail Khan Production
Producer & Director: Sohail Khan
Star Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Arbaaz Khan, Asif Basra, Amy Jackson, Niketan Dheer, Seema Biswas, Jas Arora & Jackie Shroff
Music: Sajid Ali – Wajid Ali

There have been films galore on sports. Perhaps the audience has had too many films based on cricket. So director Sohail Khan’s, who needs no special introduction,
latest offering Freaky Ali based on the game of golf, basically known as a rich man’s game, comes as a whiff of fresh air.

The scripted scenario of Freaky Ali kick starts with Ali (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) being brought up in the by lanes of Mumbai. He is an adopted orphan who tries to make his living by doing odd jobs like selling male undergarments. When his engagement breaks because of his image as a salesman and he sees tears in the eyes of the one woman he loves the most, his mother (Seema Biswas), Ali decides to turn rich by hook or by crook. He joins hands with his bestie Maqsood (Arbaaz Khan), a small-time gangster working under Sohail Khan aka Danger Bhai (Niketan Dheer) to extort money. Besides this, Ali is passionate about just one sport, cricket and even wins the challenge of scoring sixes at every ball during a gully-cricket match. During one of his extortion assignments, he decides to take up a golfing challenge and ends up victorious and he is spotted by Kishan Lal (Asif Basra), his neighbour & family well-wisher who believes that Ali’s talent can create wonders in the world of golf. As his destiny takes him towards a new way of life, with new goals & dreams. Ali then comes across new friends & love, Megha (Amy Jackson), he also makes new enemies like Vikram Rathod (Jas Arora). What follows is a series of matches where Ali has to prove his worth to his coach Kishan Lal while dealing with the success-obsessed Vikram Rathod and a man with selfish motives, Danger Bhai, who would go to any lengths to ensure the defeat of Ali at the tournament, even if it means turning his loved ones against him.

Sohail Khan has proved his directorial metle time & again by giving us some of the best & daringly different movies and once again he has brought to light the game of golf in his latest sports adventure movie namely Freaky Ali and he deserves full credit for that. But even Freaky. Ali has all the plus and minus points. The scripting work of Raaj Shandiliya & Sohail Khan is the main stay of Freaky Ali.

Performance wise Freaky Ali is an out & out Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s film and he has delivered a par excellence act, that too 1st time in a full length comical avatar and for which his comic timing in tandem with Arbaaz Khan is seen to be believed. Arbaaz Khan is perfect. Amy Jackson is impressive. Senior actors like Seema Biswas & Jackie Shroff in a cameo are good. While actors like Niketan Dheer, Jas Arora & Asif Misra deserve a special mention for their overall perfection in their justified act.

Tail Piece: Freaky Ali is roller coaster ride of fun & entertainment. In fact Freaky Ali is, a not to be missed, interesting sports adventure film.

Movie Review: Photocopy is a Breezy Entertainer

September 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Photocopy movie

Producers: Neha Rajpal & Akash Rajpal
Director: Vijay Maurya
Star Cast: Chetan Chitnis, Parna Pethe, Vandana Gupte, Dr. Girish Oak, Jaywant Wadkar, Anshuman Joshi, Manmeet Pem, Aashay Kulkarni & Vandana Gupte
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Ratings***

First things first singer turned debutant producer Neha Rajpal in lieu with Akash Rajpal, who has also penned the story with Omkar Mangesh Dutt, deserves a well-deserved pat on their back for coming up with a breezy entertainer like Photocopy which is like a welcome change for the Marathi Cinema audience.

Madhu (Parna Pethe) & Mala (Parna Pethe in a double role) are the two identical twin sisters studying in college. Needless to add that Madhu is a big time prankster while Mala is a typical book worm type girl. In due course Mala meets Sameer (Chetan Chitnis) in a quiz competition and slowly and steadily they both fall in love and then begins the confusion. As both Mala and Madhu fall in love with Sameer, who till the end due to varied circumstances does not realise that he is actually dating both the sisters and the sisters too do not know that either.

Although Photocopy sounds like a typical Bollywood film, yet it is the directorial treatment of Vijay Maurya and his interesting screenplay that keeps the audience interest alive in the whole proceedings. That apart Maurya’s technical team also deserves due credit. Amongst the actors the film solely belongs to Parna Pethe who has delivered a par excellence act in her dual role. Chetan Chitnis is perfect as the confused lover. Seasoned actors Vandana Gupte & Dr. Girish Oak are hilarious. A special mention must also be made of the gang of college friends.

Photocopy is indeed a must watch film at least once.

Movie Review: Yaari Dosti is Cliched

September 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

yaari dosti movie

Producers: Bhavana Bipin Shah & Sarika Vinod Tambe
Director: Shantanu Anant Tambe
Star Cast: Hansraj Jagtap, Akash Waghmode, Mitali Mayekar, Sandeep Gaikwad, Nisha Parulekar, Ashok Pawde, Namrata Jadhav, Janardan Singh and debutant’s Ashish Gade, Sumit Bhokse & Shreyas Raje
Genre: Social

Rating**

The reformation of street kids and hooligans is an oft repeated theme and nothing special to be raved about. Yet Yaari Dosti comes with a fresh story depicting today’s adolescence and their vision towards true friendship and life.

The films revolves around four boys, two school boys namely Prasad and Rahul from affluent families and the other two strangely named Naala and Kachra are alcoholic and hooligans to the core. In a chain of incidents they become close friends. What follows is a roller coaster ride of hilarious and emotional moments with unexpected twists and turns that changes their lives forever.

Sadly enough the directorial treatment of Shantanu Anant Tambe leaves much to be desired. To top it the first half of Yaari Dosti simply drags on and on. While the second half generates some interest. All the actors old and new are good to some extent. Even the award winning actor Hansraj Jagtap, Akash Waghmode and Mitale Mayekar of Urfi fame are handicapped due to the hackneyed script.

Yaari Dosti is certainly not the mass audience’s cup of tea but it may impress the festival circuit audience.

29 on board missing AN-32 presumed dead: IAF

September 15, 2016 by Nasheman

AN-32

New Delhi: The families of those on board the missing AN-32 aircraft of the IAF have been informed that their relatives are “presumed dead” as the search operations for the ill-fated aircraft continued.

There were 29 people on the transport plane which had vanished over the sea after it took off from Chennai for Port Blair on July 22.

“The Court of Inquiry, upon very careful scrutiny of the circumstantial evidence available and in light of extensive search and rescue operations carried out, has concluded that it is unlikely that the missing personnel on board the ill-fated aircraft would have survived the accident.

“It is with a feeling of profound sadness that the Court of Inquiry has recommended that your son/daughter be presumed to have been fatally injured,” read the August 24-dated letter from Indian Air Force to the families of those in the aircraft.

IAF sources said the families have been given the information so that they can go ahead with insurance and other administrative formalities.

The letter came annexed with a certificate of presumption of death.

“The search for missing AN32 is still in progress,” defence sources said.

The plane did not have an underwater locator system, which has made the search difficult.

“No fewer than 201 search and rescue sorties, using all suitable aircraft at our disposal were undertaken. Approximately 2,17,800 square nautical miles (Sq Nm) have been covered multiple times by these aircraft,” the letter stated.

“International emergency response teams and satellites from USA also did not help in getting any concrete information about the missing aircraft,” it added.
