Dr Zakir Naik rubbishes allegations, says he never encouraged violence

Mumbai: Rubbishing the fresh allegations made by a section of media against him that he inspired the terrorists in Bangaladesh, who killed 22 people in Dhaka recently, Islamic Research Foundation chief Dr Zakir Naik has made it clear that he never encouraged violence or terrorism.

“I totally disagree (with suggestion) that I inspired this act of killing innocent people. There is not a single talk of mine where I encouraged anyone to kill another person – Muslim or non-Muslim,” said the internationally acclaimed orator.

The 50-year-old former medical practitioner and an authority on comparative religion, who was reportedly in Makkah when a section of media launched a hate campaign against him, belatedly came to know about the fresh allegations, sources said.

In videos made available through his office in Mumbai, where the police has now stationed constables, Dr Naik says he is “not shocked” that the Dhaka terrorists had cited him on social media in recent posts.

“More than 90 per cent Bangladeshis know me…,” he says in English, stressing, “Every fan of mine may not follow everything I say.” In the WhatsApp-ed video, he says, “I disagree that I inspired this act of killing innocent people”.

Mumbai Police to probe

Meanwhile, Maharashtra government has asked Mumbai Police to conduct a probe into Dr Zakir Naik’s speeches.

“I have asked the Mumbai Police Commissioner to conduct a probe (into Naik’s speeches) and submit a report,” Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told media persons today.

Everything, including Dr Naik’s speeches, his social media accounts, sources of funding (of a foundation run by him in Mumbai) will be scrutinised, said Fadnavis, who also holds the Home portfolio.

The direction comes amid allegations by a section of media that one of the terrorists who attacked an upmarket restaurant in the Bangladeshi capital a few days ago, killing 22 people, was inspired by sermons Dr Naik.

Solidarity march in Srinagar for Dr. Zakir Naik

Srinagar: Supporters of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik took out a solidarity march in Srinagar on Friday to condemn any action that might be taken against the scholar.

Over a dozen supporters gathered peaceful in the Residency Road area and shouted slogans in favour of Zakir Naik.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of their march, Muhammad Aamir, 35, a supporter said: “He is a renowned Islamic scholar who has always condemned terrorism.”

“Any action to ban his preaching or his television channel will have serious repercussions,” Aamir added.

The supporters later dispersed.

Naik is under the scanner following revelations that two of the five young militants who massacred 20 hostages, including an Indian, at a popular cafe in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka on July 1, drew their inspiration from his speeches.

Founder of Mumbai-based Islamic Research Foundation, the preacher is banned in Britain and Canada for his hate speeches aimed against other religions.

How happy were you when your song “Nas Nas Mein” in Welcome Back was declared a big hit?

It was my good luck that “Nas Nas Mein has clicked in a big way like “Humka Peeni Hai” in Dabangg, thanks to Aneesbhai, Meet Brothers & Anjaan, besides Kumar. I am glad that I have been a part of a big film like Welcome Back in which my song was picturised on different actors.

How did you bag the offer to sing “Nas Nas Mein” in Welcome Back?

Out of the blue, Anjaan who is no more a part of the team of Meet Brothers called me and told me to come immediately to record a nice song that they had composed for Welcome Back, though I was quite reluctant as I was having some other personal commitment. I am glad I adjusted my time and went ahead and did the recording.

Is it true that you have already sung 36 songs for Salman Khan?

Yes very much Including the hit chartbuster song “Humka Peene De”, I have sung as many as 36 songs for Salman Khan. It is thanks to my good friends like Sajid – Wajid, Meet Brothers & Anjaan & above all Himesh Reshammiya that I have been able to accomplish this rare feat and come out with flying colours. Then I sang my 37th song for Salman Bhaijaan for Rajshri’s Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo. Amongst the films for which I had sung for Salman earlier are Jai Ho, Mujhse Shaadi Karoge, Veer, Dabangg.

You made your debut long before Dabangg though you shot to fame with “Humka Peeni Hai!” Comment!

Yes its true. It was with the film Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya that I got my 1st break as a playback singer way back in 1998. I should confess that it is only after Dabangg in 2010 that I have been able to establish my own identity as a playback singer.

Was it easy or tough for you to get a break as a singer in films?

It was at the age of 16 that I got my break as a playback singer literally on a silver platter with Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya when I sang the song “Teri Jawani Mast Mast”.

How do you feel about today’s music scenario?

To tell you the truth, the competition here is so stiff. The biggest problem with most of the singers is that no one tries to establish his own identity. No one looks for excellence and everyone is quite happy with whatever they are able to sing irrespective of quality.

You are related to Sabri Brothers! Right.

My father is Ustad Iqbal Sabri. I have learnt a lot from him as well as my uncle Ustad Afzal Sabri as well as Ustad Rasheed Khan.

Which are your 5 favourite songs till this date?

My 5 favourite songs till this date are “Humka Peeni Hai”, “Tere Naina”, “Jaadu Tone Waliya”, “Chala Aao Na Naino Se Baan Re”, “Dil Mera Mukt Ka” & “Nas Nas Mein”.

India secures release of national abducted in Libya

New Delhi: India has “secured” the release of its national Regi Joseph who was abducted in March this year in Libya, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said today.

“Indian Embassy in Libya has secured the release of Regi Joseph – an Indian national from Kerala. He was abducted in March this year”.

“This has been possible with the efforts of Azar A H Khan our Ambassador in Libya,” Swaraj said in a series of tweets.

Joseph, who hails from Kozhikode in Kerala, was working as a computer engineer near the Libyan capital, Tripoli. He had been there for two years with his nurse wife and three children.

Hit-&-run case: SC admits appeal against Salman’s acquittal

New Delhi: Supreme Court today admitted for final hearing the appeal of Maharashtra government challenging the acquittal of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan in the 2002 hit-and-run case, but refused to fast-track the proceedings.

“Leave granted. Petition is admitted for final hearing,” a bench of Justices J S Khehar and Arun Mishra said.

The apex court, however, did not allow the submission of Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Maharashtra, that the appeal be fixed for final hearing after six weeks as the matter is nearly 15 years old.

“We cannot put on fast track the hearing just because X, Y, Z is involved. We have to deal with so many important matters,” the court said, adding that it may hear the appeal if the Chief Justice of India issues a direction.

During the hearing, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who is representing the super star, said he has instructions that the matter be “decided on merits”.

Meanwhile, the bench also agreed to hear a separate plea filed by senior advocate Pandit Parmanand Katara challenging Bombay High Court’s order on the ground that a revision petition, instead of an appeal, should have been filed there.

Katara further said that the plea before the apex court was not maintainable due to alleged non-observance of the legal procedure.

The court, however, refused urgent hearing on the plea and said it would consider the matter later. The bench got irked when the lawyer insisted for an urgent hearing of his plea ahead of the petition filed by Maharashtra government saying, “are you arguing for the Press or for yourself. If you want to argue for the Press, then we are not interested.”

Earlier, the apex court on February 19, had issued notice to the actor on appeal of the state government in the case saying that exoneration from the top court would “vindicate him once and for all”.

Subsequently, another petition was filed by one Firoz Shaikh on behalf of the family members of a person who was killed in the 2002 hit-and-run case.
The plea had sought setting aside of the high court judgement and a direction to the 50-year-old actor to pay compensation to the wife and son of deceased Shaikh Noorulla Shaifik.

Maharashtra had said that the Bombay High Court had erred on two points while acquitting the filmstar. “Firstly, the High Court had erred in its finding by holding that there was ‘erroneous application’ of Section 33 of Evidence Act (relevancy of certain evidence for proving, in subsequent proceeding, the truth of facts therein stated) by the trial court,” the Attorney General had said.

On second count, he had said the High Court had erred by holding that the prosecution witness Ravindra Patil, a constable who was guarding the actor and had first called the police, was not a “wholly reliable witness” and his version needed corroboration with accounts of other witnesses.

The Maharashtra government’s appeal contained 47 grounds to assail the high court’s verdict and sought restoration of the trial court’s decision by which the 50-year-old actor was convicted and sentenced to five-year-jail term.

Among other grounds, the petition said, “High Court has erred in brushing aside the alcohol examination certificate and the evidence of the assistant chemical analyzer just because there was some alleged delay in taking the blood samples and for sending it to the chemical analyzer.”

The high court, in its verdict passed on December 10 last year, had held that prosecution had failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the actor was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident and was drunk.

The high court judgement had come on an appeal by the superstar, seven months after he was pronounced guilty by trial court of running over five people sleeping on a pavement outside a laundry in suburban Bandra with his Toyota Land Cruiser, killing one and causing injury to four others.

On May 6 last year, a sessions court had convicted Salman in the case.

K B Koliwad elected Karnataka Assembly Speaker

Bengaluru: Senior Congress MLA K B Koliwad was today unanimously elected as the 20th Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

Koliwad, a five-time MLA from Ranebennur constituency, had filed his nomination yesterday. He had served as Minister in the past.

Koliwad succeeds Kagodu Thimmappa, who has been inducted into the Ministry as Revenue Minister by Chief Minister Siddaramaih in the recent cabinet rejig.

Siddaramaiah proposed the name of Koliwad while Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T B Jayachandra seconded it following which he was elected as Speaker unopposed in a voice vote.

After Deputy Speaker Shivashankar Reddy formally announced Koliwad’s election, he was escorted by Siddaramaiah, Opposition Leader Jagadish Shettar and JD(S) leader Y S V Datta to the Chair.

Earlier, as the House met for the day, BJP members entered the Well demanding a probe into the alleged site allocation scam involving Bengaluru Development Authority but later relented after the Deputy Speaker asked them to allow the business of election of Speaker.

Congratulating Koliwad, Siddaramaiah thanked Opposition for its support in electing the Speaker unopposed.

Abbas Kiarostami: Celebrated Iranian director dies

Award-winning film director dies aged 76 in Paris where he had gone to receive cancer treatment.

Abbas Kiarostami, the critically acclaimed Iranian director whose 1997 film Taste of Cherry won the prestigious Palme d’Or, has died aged 76.

Iran’s official news agency IRNA said late on Monday that Kiarostami died in Paris, where he had gone for cancer treatment last week after undergoing surgery in Iran earlier this year.

Kiarostami wrote and directed dozens of films, winning more than 70 awards over an illustrious career spanning more than 40 years.

He was born in 1940 in Tehran and continued to work from Iran after the 1979 revolution, when many of his fellow artists fled the country.

The influential auteur is possibly best remembered for his minimalist drama Taste of Cherry, which told the story of an Iranian man looking for someone to bury him after he killed himself, and won the top award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997.

Among his other films was Close-Up from 1990, which told the true story of a man who impersonated a filmmaker and tricked a family into believing that he would put them in a film.

His 1987 film Where is the Friend’s Home? is a story of honour, about a boy who tries to return schoolwork to a friend.

The 2000 film The Wind Will Carry Us is about journalists from a city who go to a village to write about the death of an old woman, but they have time to learn about and appreciate rural life as the woman lives longer than expected.

Cinemas in Iran were due to pause all showings at 10pm (17:30 GMT) on Tuesday to hold a prayer in Kiarostami’s memory.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called Kiarostami’s work “an everlasting achievement”.

“Kiarostami’s different and deep outlook on life, and his invitation to peace and friendship, will be an everlasting achievement,” Rouhani wrote on Twitter.

American filmmaker Martin Scorsese also paid tribute to Kiarostami, describing him as “a true gentleman and, truly, one of our great artists”.

“I got to know Abbas over the last 10 or 15 years,” he said. “He was a very special human being: quiet, elegant, modest, articulate and quite observant. I don’t think he missed anything. Our paths crossed too seldom, and I was always glad when they did.”

Kiarostami is survived by two sons, Ahmad and Bahman Kiarostami, who work in multimedia and documentary film.

Saudi Arabia: Bombings target Medina and Qatif mosques

Four security officers have been killed and five others wounded in a suicide attack outside one of Islam’s holiest sites, Saudi Arabia’s interior ministry said.

The bombing at the Prophet’s Mosque in the city of Medina was the third attack to hit the kingdom on Monday, following blasts in the cities of Jeddah and Qatif.

Photos of Medina posted on social media showed smoke billowing from a fire outside the mosque where Prophet Muhammad is buried.

“Four security guards were martyred and five others wounded as a result of their opposition to the suicide attacker who detonated explosives near them as he was on his way to the mosque,” the ministry said on Twitter.

The blast struck moments before sunset prayers when people were breaking their fast inside the mosque.

The mosque, which is also known as Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, is visited by pilgrims from around the world during the final days of the fasting month of Ramadan.

Qari Ziyaad Patel, 36, from South Africa, was at the mosque when he heard the blast just as the call to prayer was ending.

He said many at first thought it was the sound of traditional, celebratory cannon fire, but then he felt the ground shake.

“The vibrations were very strong,” Patel told the AP news agency. “It sounded like a building imploded.”

Saudi Arabia’s state-run news channel, Al-Ekhbariya, aired live video of thousands of worshippers praying inside the mosque hours after the explosion.

The mosque is considered to be Islam’s second holiest site after the Sacred Mosque, or Masjid-al-Haram, which surrounds the Kaaba in the city of Mecca.

Following the attack in Medina, Muslims around the world expressed their outrage.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Javed Zarif, writing on Twitter, said: “There are no more red lines left for terrorists to cross. Sunnis, Shiites [Shias] will both remain victims unless we stand united as one.”

Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, tweeted: “It’s time we work together to save our religion from these deadly criminal gangs.”

Qatif explosions

Around the same time as the Medina blast, two other explosions struck near a mosque in the eastern city of Qatif on the Gulf coast.

Witnesses said a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a Shia mosque without causing any other injuries.

They reported seeing body parts lying on the ground in the city’s business district.

“Suicide bomber for sure. I can see the body” which was blasted to pieces, a resident told the AFP news agency.

Nasima al-Sada, another resident, said “one bomber blew himself up near the mosque”.

A third witness told Reuters news agency that one explosion destroyed a car parked near the mosque, followed by another explosion just before 7pm local time.

There was no claim of responsibility for the attacks.

Earlier on Monday morning, two security officers were injured as a suicide bomber blew himself up near the US consulate in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah.

Security officers became suspicious of a man near the car park of Dr Suleiman Faqeeh Hospital which is directly across from the US diplomatic mission. When they moved in to investigate, “he blew himself up with a suicide belt inside the hospital parking”, the interior ministry said.

Saudi’s interior ministry identified the attacker as Abdullah Waqar Khan, a Pakistani national in his early thirties. In a tweet, the ministry said that Khan, a driver, had moved to Jeddah 12 years ago to live with his wife and her parents.

Pakistan said on Tuesday it was going to investigate whether the suicide bomber in Jeddah was one of its nationals.

“We will investigate the claim that one of the bombers was a Pakistani who according to reports was living in Saudi Arabia for more than 12 years,” a foreign ministry official told the DPA news agency on condition of anonymity.

In January, at least four people were killed in a suicide attack on a Shia mosque in the eastern al-Ahsa region.

In October, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing at a Shia mosque in Najran, in which at least one person was killed.

ISIL, also known as ISIS, also claimed responsibility for an attack at a mosque inside a special forces headquarters in the city of Abha in August 2015. Fifteen people werekilled in that attack.

17 new faces in Modi Govt; Javedekar elevated to cabinet rank

New Delhi: 17 new faces including BJP leaders S S Ahluwalia, and M J Akbar and allies Anupriya Patel of Apna Dal and Ramdas Athawale of RPI were today inducted along with two old hands Vijay Goel and Faggan Kulaste into the Modi government in expansion and reshuffle in which five were dropped and Environment Minister Prakash Javedekar was elevated to the Cabinet.

The second exercise by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in little more than two years since he took over in May 2014 saw a number a dalit and OBC leaders being given ministerial positions done apparently with an eye on assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand next year and Gujarat later.

Javadekar, who held independent charge of Environment, was the lone minister to be promoted to the cabinet rank while all new inductees took oath as Ministers of State. Earlier, there was speculation that Power Minister Piyush Goel and Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will be elevated to the Cabinet.

Ajay Tamta (Uttarakhand), Arjun Ram Meghwal (Rajasthan), Krishna Raj (UP), Athawale (Maharashtra), Ramesh C Jigajinagi (Karnataka) were among the dalit MPs administered the oath of Office and Secrecy by President Pranab Mukherjee at a ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhawan attended by Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Modi, his cabinet colleagues, BJP President Amit Shah and leaders allied parties among others. No Congress leader was present.

Others who were inducted included P P Chaudhary, C R Chaudhary (Rajasthan), A M Dave, Faggan Singh Kulaste (Madhya Pradesh), Mahendra Nath Pandey (UP), Purshotam Rupala, J Bhabhor and Mansukhbhai Mandaviya (Gujarat), Rajen Gohain (Assam) and S R Bhamre (Maharashtra).

Akbar was elected recently to Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh while Goel represents Rajasthan in the Upper House. Ahluwalia was elected to Lok Sabha from Darjling while Anupriya Patel was elected from Mirzapur in UP.

Those dropped from the ministry are Nihalchand, Ram Shankar Katheria, Sanwar Lal Jat, Manuskhbhai D Vasava and M K Kundariya. All barring Goel and Faggan Kulaste are new faces while a few have been ministers in BJP-ruled state governments.

After the dropping of five ministers, today’s expansion took the total strength of the Council of Ministers to 78, four below the Constitutional bar of 82. The Council of Ministers can have a maximum of 15 per cent of the total strength of the Lok Sabha, which has 542 members.

Official sources said the exercise was aimed at infusing more “experience, expertise and energy” into the government.

The choices also underscore BJP’s attempts to strengthen its vote base among dalits and other backward castes, party sources said, adding that states, where it has done well in the Lok Sabha polls and also where it faces state polls, have also now got ample representation. The saffron party has been trying to woo the weaker sections ahead of the crucial UP polls.

Salim plays Rohit, a call centre executive, and is a key protagonists in the film reflecting the madness of Bollywood that all aspiring actors landing up in Mumbai have. He goes through an identity crisis living a normal life with a normal job but at the same time carrying on the suppressed passion of making it big in Bollywood. His co – stars Ashish Vidyarthi, as a retired man & Raima Sen, a prostitute too portray the same ambitions.

Salim has undergone professional training under veteran Kishor Namit Kapoor and later on with Atul Mathur. His passion for acting & learning was such that even when his shots were not being filmed he would visit the sets to watch other co – actors. Salim Diwan averred, “As an actor you should be able to effectively portray the role you are playing. I learnt a lot from Ashish Vidyarthiji during the shooting of this film”, said Salim Diwan.

Back in 2005 – 2006 he had participated in Star TV’s reality programme Get Set Go and won an IIFA award for the same. There he happened to meet stalwarts like Karan Johar, J P Dutta and the urge to become an actor and making it to Bollywood only got stronger.

The actor, who has also been part of an episode on television further averred, “The role I am looking for should be convincing & relate to the audience”. His film Bollywood Dairies has recently been awarded the Special Jury Mention Award
(Critics Choice) by The Dadasaheb Phalke Film Foundation Award for the year 2016. The award was recently presented to him at Delhi at the hands of the President of India.
