Vijay, Pujara put India in commanding position

November 25, 2017 by Nasheman

Nagpur: Indian top-order batsmen Murali Vijay and Murali Vijay continued to pile domination on Sri Lanka, posting 185/1 at Tea on Day 2 of the second Test at the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium here on Saturday.

Vijay (106 not out) brought up his 10th Test ton, while Pujara (71 not out) scored his 18th half-century in the longest format of the game to help India trail by 20 runs when umpires called it an end to the second session.

The top-order Indian batsmen moulded a healthy unbeaten 178-run partnership for the second-wicket, leaving the Sri Lanka bowlers frustrated.

Resuming the play, the Saurashtra batsmen stood tall on the stumps sending the loose deliveries to the fence. His 183-ball innings was laced with nine boundaries.

The Tamil Nadu batsman, who marked his return in the Test cricket with a century looked to be the aggressor out of the two, occassionaly steeping out of the crease to sent the ball to the fence.

Vijay’s 194-ball innings saw nine boundaries and one hit over the fence.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka bowlers were left in misery, failing to find the trick to clinch wickets on the second consecutive session of the day.

Brief Scores: Sri Lanka: 205 vs India 185/1 (Vijay 106 not out, Pujara 71 not out, Gamage 1/33).

Rs 1 cr for whoever slaps Lalu Yadav’s son Tej Pratap, announces BJP leader

November 25, 2017 by Nasheman

Patna: A BJP leader on Friday announced a “reward” of Rs one crore to anyone who slaps RJD leader Tej Pratap Yadav for his objectionable comments against Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi.

However, the BJP state unit distanced itself from the comments and issued a statement condemning the remarks of Anil Sahni, the party’s media in-charge for the Patna district.

The BJP said it will take disciplinary action against Sahni for his “reckless utterances”.

“We will give a reward of Rs one crore to anybody who slaps Tej Pratap Yadav. The RJD leader had threatened to thrash our respected Deputy CM inside his house (during the marriage of his son on December 3). We wish to pay Yadav in the same coin,” Sahni had said.

“We will also organise demonstrations in front of Yadav’s house to put pressure on him to apologise to Sushil Modi,” he had said.

The BJP leader was reacting to a recent video footage in which Yadav, the elder son of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad and a former state minister, was purportedly shown threatening to disrupt Sushil Modi’s son’s marriage and using the words “ghar mein ghus kar maarenge (will beat inside his house)”.

Yadav’s comments drew strong reaction from Sushil Modi, who urged Lalu Prasad to persuade his son against making provocative speeches.

However, in response to Sahni’s remarks, a strongly-worded statement was issued by BJP state unit spokesman Suresh Rungta, who said, “Sahni has spoken in his personal capacity. The party condemns his statement and has nothing to do with it”.

“The BJP has always been a votary of decorum and decency in public discourse… Sahni will therefore certainly face disciplinary action by the party,” Rungta added.

Padmavati: Police lathicharge Karni Sena members in Rajasthan’s Bhilwara

November 25, 2017 by Nasheman

Gurugram: Members of Rajput Karni Sena on Saturday launched a fresh protest against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’ on Saturday.

In Haryana’s Gurugram, the Karni Sena workers protested outside the deputy commissioners’ office against the release of the movie.

“Have submitted a memorandum to deputy commissioner to ban ‘Padmavati’ in Haryana. We want a 100 percent ban and not a conditional ban on the movie,” Karni Sena President Mahipal Singh Makrana said in Gurugram today.

In another incident, the Mewar Regional General Assembly and the Karni Sena called for a bandh in Rajasthan’s Bhilwara today. Apart from Bhilwara, the shutdown was also observed in Mandal and Hamirgarh towns.

During the demonstration, members staged a protest outside a Bhilwara movie theatre. The Sena members, as they continued the campaign against the movie, clashed with the staff of the theatre and created a ruckus inside it.

The members even took out protest rallies against the movie.

As the protest intensified, the police resorted to lathicharge the protesters and arrested several members of the fringe outfit, said a report.

A week ago, the Karni Sena had vowed to stall the release of the movie and issued a warning that they would not allow it to hit theatres even if changes are made in the film by the makers.

“My party members and I are totally against the film Padmavati’s release. Even after the changes, we will not allow it to hit the theatres. We will come out on the streets along with other social organisations and protest against it if it gets a release date,” Karni Sena chief Lokendra Singh Kalvi told reporters.

The warning from Kalvi came after the producers of Padmavati reportedly said that they would take a call on its release only after the Censor Board’s go-ahead.

Padmavati- based on the life of a Rajput Queen Rani Padmavati – is in the eye of the storm following protests from right-wing groups over alleged tampering with historical facts, a charge which Sanjay Leela Bhansali has categorically denied.

The film features Deepika Padukone in the titular role as Rani Padmavati, alongside Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh as Sultan Alauddin Khilji.

The release of the film, which was earlier slated for December 1, has now been deferred as the filmmakers are yet to secure a censor certificate.

The Rajput Karni Sena had even called for a Bharat Bandh on December 1 to protest against the controversial film over what it calls ”blatant distortion of facts” by its makers.

Delhi 4-Year-Old Accused Of Raping Classmate

November 24, 2017 by Nasheman

Representational Image

New Delhi: Delhi Police on Thursday said that it is looking for CCTV footage to confirm allegations that a four-year-old boy raped his classmate of the same age in a Delhi school.

As per an FIR filed by her parents, the girl had complained of pain in her private parts after coming back from school last Friday. The next day, she said that a boy in her class had used his fingers as well as a sharpened pencil to sexually assault her on the premises of Delhi’s Maxfort School in Dwarka.

The boy has been booked for rape after Rockland Hospital confirmed sexual assault and Delhi Police is now looking for video evidence of the incident. “Various aspects are being analysed. We are also looking for CCTV footage or if anything was captured. The medical report of the victim will also be looked into,” Delhi Police’s spokesperson Dependra Pathak said.

Pathak also added that the possibility of school staff’s role would be looked into. This after the parents of the girl had accused the school management of laxity. They have said a school teacher and the school coordinator, on being told about the incident, feigned ignorance and offered no concrete assistance.

The school principal too – reportedly – did not provide any relief, and further refused to divulge details of the accused student.

In a statement to the media, the girl’s mother said that she has asked the school authorities to sack the principal, the teacher concerned and the counsellor, issue a public apology on Facebook and refund her two years’ school fee with interest.

Myanmar, Bangladesh sign Rohingya return deal

November 24, 2017 by Nasheman

More than 620,000 people have poured into Bangladesh since August [Anadolu]

by Al Jazeera

Bangladesh and Myanmar have signed a deal for the return of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees, who have taken shelter in the border town of Cox’s Bazar after a brutal crackdown by the military.

Myanmar’s foreign ministry confirmed the signing of the agreement on Thursday, without releasing further details.

“I didn’t find any clear statement how these refugees will be repatriated. I’m not sure whether they will be allowed to return to their original village,” Rohingya activist Nay San Lwin told Al Jazeera.

Rohingya activists demand a halt to ‘ongoing genocide’
“It looks like they will be placed in the temporary camps, and later the refugees will be locked up in the camps for a long time like the Rohingya in Sittwe for more than five years now.

“Myanmar minister for resettlement and welfare said they will repatriate maximum 300 refugees a day. So it can take up to two decades to repatriate all those refugees.”

Al Jazeera’s Scott Heidler, reporting from Yangon, said the deal was the result of international pressure which has been mounting steadily on Myanmar.

‘Concentration camps’
“For Myanmar, it’s very important because it is showing some progress on this Rohingya crisis,” Heidler said.

San Lwin said refugees should not return if their citizenship and basic rights are not guaranteed.

Rendered stateless, Rohingya have been the target of communal violence and vicious anti-Muslim sentiment for years.

They have also been systematically oppressed by the government, which stripped the minority of citizenship and severely restricts their movement, as well as their access to basic services.

The latest crisis erupted after Rohingya rebels attacked police posts on August 25.

The army backlash rained violence across northern Rakhine, with refugees recounting nightmarish scenes of soldiers and Buddhist mobs slaughtering villagers and burning down entire communities.

The military denies all allegations but has restricted access to the conflict zone.

Aung San Suu Kyi’s government has also vowed to deny visas to a UN-fact finding mission tasked with probing accusations of military abuse.

Deadly blast strikes mosque in Egypt’s Sinai

November 24, 2017 by Nasheman

by Al Jazeera

At least 115 people have been killed in a bomb and gun attack on a mosque in Egypt’s northern Sinai Peninsula, according to state media.

The attack took place in the al-Rawda village, west of el-Arish, shortly after Friday prayers.

Egyptian state media MENA provided the death toll, citing an official security source. It also said that 80 people were wounded in the attack.

Local media reports said that attackers planted explosives and then opened fire on worshippers while the sermon was under way.

Egypt has for years been battling an armed movement in the rugged and thinly populated Sinai Peninsula, which has gained pace since the military overthrew democratically elected president Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood in mid-2013.

In 2014, following a suicide bombing that left 31 soldiers killed, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi declared a state of emergency in the peninsula, describing it as a “nesting ground for terrorism and terrorists”.

Local media also reported the closure of the Arish-Rafah road, further east.

The attack comes a day before the Rafah border crossing, the main gateway for Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip to the outside world, was due to open for a three-day period.

The border opened briefly earlier this week.

Polygraph test of 1984 riots witness postponed

November 24, 2017 by Nasheman

Arms dealer Abhishek Verma, a witness in a 1984 riots case against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler, said that the CBI told him on Friday that it has postponed his polygraph test as the lie detection machine has broken down.

“CBI Investigating Officer called me at 2.20 p.m. today (Friday), saying that (someone from) the FSL Rohini (Forensic Science Laboratory) conveyed to him that their polygraph machine is broken (or faulty) and that’s why they can’t conduct tests from November 27 to 30,” Verma told IANS.

Earlier, the Central Bureau of Investigation had set November 27 to 30 to conduct Verma’s polygraph test.

The CBI told Verma that new dates for conducting the test would be conveyed whenever the machine is repaired.

A court on November 1 had directed the CBI to conduct the lie detection test by the end of November.

The court has appointed noted advocate B.S. Joon as the commissioner to monitor Verma’s polygraph test after Verma moved an application alleging that forensic lab was “unfair and biased”.

The CBI is conducting the lie detector tests on Verma in a case against Tytler, accused of leading a mob in Pul Bangash area in 1984 that led to the killing of three Sikhs. The Congress leader has refused to undergo the test.

The agency’s move came after Verma’s accusation that Tytler influenced witness Surender Singh through money and a promise to send his son Narender Singh to Canada.

The CBI had earlier given a clean chit to Tytler in the case but reopened investigation following a December 4, 2015 court order in the wake of Verma’s allegation.

RSS chief raises temple pitch ahead of Gujarat polls

November 24, 2017 by Nasheman

Ahead of Gujarat elections, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday raised the pitch for a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya, saying it will be constructed only at the disputed site and “nothing else” will be built there.

“The Ram temple will be constructed at the site of Ramjanmabhoomi and nothing else will be built. It will be constructed and that too in its original form and with the same stones. It will be built under the leadership of those who led this movement and have been holding its flag for 20-25 years,” he said at a three-day ‘Dharam Sansad’ of the VHP here.

“Time has come close. We have to be very careful and take steps one by one. We don’t have to think about anything else.

“For the welfare of Hindu society and for the universal welfare of the world, let the Ram temple be built at Ramjanbhoomi in Ayodhya. This is my only wish,” Bhagwat said after the head of Pejawar Mutt, Vishweshateertha Swamiji, said that construction of Ram temple would begin within one yera after crossing all hurdles.

This is for the first time that Bhagwat has spoken so vehemently on the Ram temple issue in a public address.

His comments assume significance in the context of renewed mediation attempts by Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to find a solution to the dragging dispute in Ayodhya.

The Shia Central Wakf Board said earlier this week that it was ready to build a mosque in Lucknow so that the temple could be built in Ayodhya, a proposal which was also submitted to the Supreme Court.

Recalling his association with Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackrey, Bhagwat said: “Balasaheb once told me clearly that you cannot build Ram temple by kar sewa only. It needs a tough fight which may take even 20 to 30 years. If you continue with this fight then there is a possibility of construction of Ram temple in 20 to 30 years.

He said ‘swayamsewaks’ often come to him and ask when the temple will come up Ayodhya.

“I do not say anything to them as I am not an astrologer. It started in 1990. What Balasaheb used to say, we have completed 20 years in 2010 and would complete 30 years in 2020. His words would not go in vain,” he said.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists tore down the 16th century Babri Mosque at Ayodhya on December 6, 1992, claiming it had been built after destroying an original Ram temple. The VHP then raised a makeshift Ram temple, saying it was where Lord Ram was born.
