Doomsday Clock adjusted, partly due to Donald Trump

January 27, 2017 by Nasheman

Comments by Donald Trump on nuclear weapons and climate change have made the world less safe, atomic scientists say.

by Al Jazeera

Atomic scientists say the world is inching closer to an apocalypse, partly due to the words and actions of US President Donald Trump.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a group of nuclear scientists who have been assessing global security for 70 years, said they were moving their symbolic Doomsday Clock 30 seconds closer to midnight for a number of reasons, but cited Trump’s campaign rhetoric on nuclear proliferation and denial of climate change in particular.

“Even though he has just now taken office, the president’s intemperate statements, lack of openness to expert advice and questionable cabinet nominations have already made a bad international security situation worse,” the scientists said.

Trump, who assumed office on January 20, has made contradictory statements about climate change, at times calling it a hoax and other times saying he would keep an open mind about it.

US-Russia relations

Beyond the election of Trump, the scientists listed a number of other reasons for their assessment, including strains in relations between the US and Russia, which together possess more than 90 percent of the world’s nuclear weapons, and North Korea’s underground nuclear tests.

“The Doomsday Clock is closer to midnight than it has ever been in the lifetime of almost everyone in this room,” Lawrence Krauss, the chairman of the Bulletin’s board of sponsors, told reporters on Thursday.

“The last time it was closer was 63 years ago in 1953 after the then Soviet Union exploded its first hydrogen bomb, creating the modern arms race,” he added.

Alluding to Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, he said: “This is the first time that the words and stated policies of one or two people placed in high positions have so impacted on our perception of the existential threats we believe the world faces.”

In a lengthy 18-page explanation of its decision, the scientists said that the international community failed to “come effectively to grips” with both nuclear weapons and climate change last year.

The Doomsday Clock was created in 1947 by a group of scientists who worked on the Manhattan Project, the American-led clandestine effort to build the world’s first nuclear weapons.

Over the decades the scientists have recognised climate change as an additional threat, and in their report said “it could change life on Earth as we know it”.

Last year, the bulletin opted not to change the clock’s time from three minutes to midnight.

Salman Khan, other stars plead not guilty in blackbuck poaching case

January 27, 2017 by Nasheman

salman khan

Jodhpur: Bollywood actor Salman Khan and his “Hum Saath-Saath Hain” co-stars Saif Ali Khan, Neelam Kothari, Sonali Bendre and Tabu, pleaded “not guilty” in an 18-year-old blackbuck poaching case in a Jodhpur court on Friday.

The actors were present in the court to get their statements recorded before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Dalpat Singh Rajpurohit.

The CJM court had earlier asked the Bollywood celebrities to appear on January 25 to record statement, but the stars, including Salman and Saif, did not come on that day citing security reasons.

The court then postponed the matter for Friday.

The case against all cine stars is pending since 1998, but it could not come for hearing and remained stalled due to several appeals and revisions in the higher court in other connected matters.

During the course of hearing on Friday, Salman replied to as many as 65 questions posed by the court in regard to the allegations levelled by the prosecution witnesses.

Salman and the other actors also replied to a few general questions like names, father’s name, age, residential address and caste.

To a question with regard to his religion, Salman said that “I’m Hindu and Muslim both. I’m Bhartiya”. He subsequently said in English that I’m an Indian.

Asked about the allegations levelled by the prosecution, the stars pleaded “not guilty”. Salman in his reply said that he couldn’t have gone out for poaching due to security reasons, especially in the evenings or night.

Salman and Saif stayed in the court for around half an hour and an hour respectively. The actresses had to remain in court for around two hours.

“We will produce defence witnesses to counter the prosecution as all the allegations are untrue,” Hastimal Sarswat, Salman’s advocate told IANS.

Relatives of the film stars, including Salman’s sister Alvira and his bodyguard Shera, were also present during the court proceedings.

All the five Bollywood actors are accused of poaching blackbucks on the midnight of October 1-2, 1998, during the shooting of “Hum Saath-Saath Hain”.

Two blackbucks, a protected animal under the Wildlife Protection Act, were killed in the outskirts of Kankani village near Jodhpur.

Salman was accused of carrying and using illegal arms too, but recently the CJM court acquitted him of the charges.

Amarinder Singh to be Congress’s Punjab CM face: Rahul

January 27, 2017 by Nasheman

Amarinder Singh addresses media

Majitha: Setting at rest speculation, Rahul Gandhi today announced that Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh will be the party’s chief ministerial face in the high-stakes Assembly polls.

74-year-old Amarinder, who is fighting his last election, will be the next Chief Minister, if the party forms government in Punjab.

Rahul, addressing the rally in the pocket-borough of Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia, said Amarinder alone can change Punjab and set it right along with the support of the people of the state and there is no other way out.

Ruling SAD and AAP have been mocking Congress, asking why the party was not declaring Amarinder as its chief ministerial candidate for the February 4 Assembly polls.

“Punjab will be run by its people. I want to tell you that Punjab’s chief minister will be from Punjab and Punjab’s chief minister is sitting here. Amarinder Singh is Punjab’s chief ministerial candidate and he will be Punjab’s chief minister,” he said, prompting leaders to congratulate Amarinder on the dais.

Rahul said Punjab will not be run by “remote control” as it does not need one, taking a veiled dig at Kejriwal and accusing him of wanting to become Delhi and Punjab chief minister at the same time.

He also made a scathing attack on the ruling Badals, accusing them of ruining Punjab and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of siding with them and talking of removing corruption.

Rahul, who began his three-day election tour to the poll-bound state by addressing his first public meeting in the presence of Amarinder and Navjot Singh Sidhu, also attacked AAP and Kejriwal of trying to befool the people of the state by making false and empty promises.

The Congress leader said this election is not to “form a government but to save Punjabiyat” and Punjab’s honour and only Congress with the help of people of the state can do it.

He also said if Congress comes to power, then the government will bring a law to deal with the drug menace in the state and put all those carrying out drugs business behind bars.

January 27, 2017 by Nasheman

1,000 notes

New Delhi: The Rs 1,000 note may stage a comeback but with enhanced security features and it will also be smaller in size than the demonetised notes.

“They (Rs 1,000 notes) will come in a new design with enhanced security features to check counterfeiting,” a source said. The new notes will come in a new colour and may also be Braille-friendly.

Earlier, the government had said it would take a few months to bring back the Rs 1,000 note. “The work is in progress. It is in fact being expedited because people are facing difficulty with the Rs 2,000 note,” the source said, adding that the Rs 2,000 note will be phased out but no decision has been taken so far. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India may lift restrictions on cash withdrawal from banks and ATMs. But this may not happen before the end of March.

Guwahati: Assam today as the state was celebrating Republic Day amid tight security.

Bombs were detonated in Charaidow, Sibsagar, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts, police said.

There was, however, no report of any casualty or damage to property in the blasts.

In Dibrugarh town, blast took place just 500 metres away from Chowkidingi Parade ground where the national flag was being unfurled at an official function.

Due to high security in the area, the militants threw the bomb into a drain near a tea garden where it went off, police said.

In Charaidow district, IEDs were exploded near a petrol pump at Dholbagan and at Bihu Bor. In neighbouring Sibsagar, two blasts took place at Lengibor and Majpani.

In Tinsukia district, the insurgents detonated two IEDs – one inside an empty water tank at Sisimi village and another near Dhola bridge in Sukan pukhuri area, the police said.

Tight security measures were in place for Republic Day, with patrolling by police and para-military forces in the vulnerable areas and at vital installations.

India, United Arab Emirates ink defence, security pacts

January 26, 2017 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Seeking to boost security collaboration, India and the United Arab Emirates today inked two pacts to enable cooperation in the areas of cyberspace, armaments, defence industries and transfer of technology. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Mohammed Al Bawardi, UAE’s Minister of State for Defence, exchanged Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of defence industry.

The agreement aims to establish cooperation in the identified fields of defence manufacturing and technology, including through studies, research, development, innovation and cooperation between public and private sector institutions of the two nations. Under this MoU, the two sides will also collaborate in areas of armaments, defence industries and transfer of technology.

The second MoU exchanged between Parrikar and Shaikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy National Security Adviser and Chairman of the State Security Department, UAE, was aimed at technology development and cooperation in cyberspace. It is noteworthy that in May last year, Parrikar’s visit to the Gulf country focused on widening conversation with the UAE military on defence and security issues.

Possibilities of Indian defence manufacturers selling military equipment to the UAE were also explored during Parrikar’s visit. Parrikar had also inked an MoU on the Mutual Protection of Classified Information. Bilateral defence interaction between India and the UAE has been witnessing a steady growth.

There have been regular high level exchanges at the level of service chiefs, functional level exchanges and military education exchanges between the countries. The ships of the navies of both countries have regularly made port calls enhancing bilateral defence cooperation. India and UAE also hold an ‘Annual Defence Dialogue’ to discuss the security and defence cooperation issues between the two countries.

Pakistan bans TV host Aamir Liaquat banned over ‘hate speech’

Pakistan’s media regulator has banned one of the country’s most popular television talkshow hosts over “hate speech” and “incitement to violence”, according to a statement, after he hosted a series of shows accusing five abducted activists and their supporters of blasphemy.

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) banned Aamir Liaquat from appearing on his network Bol TV for an indefinite period on Thursday, until the body’s complaints cell issues a final verdict.

Liaquat is one of Pakistan’s most popular television personalities, having previously hosted a religion-themed show, as well as a major gameshow. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the past week, Liaquat levelled a series of accusations of blasphemy against five activists who were abducted within days of each other earlier this month, accusing them of insulting Islam and its Prophet, and of running anti-military Facebook pages.

He also accused those calling for the release of the activists of supporting blasphemy, including calling out some activists by name, while flashing their pictures on screen.

Blasphemy charges

Insulting the Prophet Muhammad carries a mandatory death sentence in Pakistan, while other forms of “blasphemy” carry sentences ranging from a fine to life imprisonment.

There is also a significant risk of mob violence in blasphemy cases in Pakistan, where the matter is considered particularly sensitive.

At least 68 people have been murdered over blasphemy allegations since 1990, according to an Al Jazeera tally.

At least one rally calling for the release of the abducted activists has been attacked by a right-wing group in the last week. Rights activists say the blasphemy allegations on Liaquat’s show and elsewhere are aimed at silencing dissent .

“Aamir Liaquat … has willfully and repeatedly made statements and allegations which tantamount [sic] to hate speech, derogatory remarks, incitement to violence against citizens and casting accusation of being anti-state and anti-Islam, on various individuals,” the PEMRA statement read.

Liaquat has been banned from appearing on Bol TV in any capacity, and from declaring anyone an “infidel” or a “traitor” on any other television news channel, the statement said. PEMRA said it made the ruling in response to hundreds of hate speech complaints.

“I am not in favour of banning speech, but this was not just speech. This was the only kind of speech that should be criminalised, because this is incitement to violence,” said rights activist Gul Bukhari. “Incitement to violence in the Pakistani context is different, because vigilantes can and do come and kill you here.”

Jibran Nasir, a rights activist who was repeatedly accused by Liaquat of supporting blasphemy in the last week, welcomed the decision, saying he has also registered a legal case against Liaquat under Pakistan’s anti-terrorism laws.

“Clearly there were many Pakistanis who felt extremely distressed, and I’m glad that that good sense has prevailed among the masses to identify someone who was spreading hate speech,” he told Al Jazeera.

“In the end it is the constitution that prevails, which provides everyone the right to dignity, freedom of expression [and] also safety, liberty and protection from harm,” said media analyst Adnan Rehmat.

“In the presence of these clear guidelines on what is permissible and what is not, the insidious, incendiary, wanton and deliberate campaign by Aamir Liaquat was in violation of the constitution and the PEMRA laws,” he said.

Pakistan’s media regulator, which is connected to the government, has in recent months taken a more active approach in imposing a code of conduct on the country’s vibrant electronic news media, which consists of more than 45 24-hour news television channels.

Media rights activists and senior journalists have pushed, however, for a move towards a self-regulation model, fearing a crackdown on dissent by the state.

“We are all advocating not for a ban of any channel or individuals, but for self regulation,” said Owais Tohid, a senior journalist. “Media should hold itself accountable and implement its own code of conduct.”
