State Govt supports Kambala: CM Siddaramaiah

January 23, 2017 by Nasheman

siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: In the wake of protests urging to lift ban on Kambala in Tulu Nadu, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said “the state government is infavour of Kambala and supports the sport to organise it in Karnataka.” He was speaking in the state capital on Monday.

He urged the union government to help the people and state to lift the ban on Kambala. Kambala and Jallikattu are the traditional sports events with rich traditional background. Therefore the union government should act immediately as-like what it did for Tamil Nadu to organise Jallikattu, chief minister noted.

England script win in nail-biting third ODI over India

January 23, 2017 by Nasheman

England

Kolkata: England registered their first victory of their Indian cricket tour, edging past the hosts by five runs in the inconsequential third and final One-Day International (ODI) at the Eden Gardens here on Sunday.

Chasing 322 to win, India almost rode on Kedar Jadhav’s brilliant 90 off just 75 balls along with Hardik Pandya’s career-best score of 56 off 43 balls, which saw a match-winning 104-run sixth wicket stand off just 83 balls.

But, with 16 runs needing in the last over, Jadhav hit a six and a four off the first two balls to give the 66,000-odd crowd some hope, but fell to Chris Woakes eventually.

Coalscam: SC forms SIT to probe charges against ex-CBI Chief

January 23, 2017 by Nasheman

ranjit-sinha

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today constituted a special investigation team, to be headed by the CBI Director, to look into the prima facie allegations against former CBI chief Ranjit Sinha of trying to influence the probe in the coal scam cases.

A bench headed by Justice M B Lokur said the CBI Director can take assistance of two officers of his choice after duly intimating the apex court.

The bench, also comprising Justices Kurian Joseph and A K Sikri, said the panel headed by former CBI special director M L Sharma has prima facie indicted Sinha for allegedly scuttling the coal scam cases.

“Since there has been a change in guard in CBI, we will continue to repose our faith in CBI,” the bench said, while making it clear that it has not expressed its opinion on the writ petition pending before it or the M L Sharma panel report.

The bench said Special Public Prosecutor for coal scam cases, senior advocate R S Cheema, would assist the CBI director and his team on legal issues relating to the matter.

It asked the CBI Director to inform the court on the next date of hearing about the composition of his team and the time needed to complete the probe.

Jallikattu protest turns violent, vehicles, police station set on fire

January 23, 2017 by Nasheman

jallikattu

Chennai: A week-long protest protesting the ban on Jallikattu turned violent today with the clash between protestors and Policemen at Marina beach in Chennai on Monday.

The clash broke out when the police forcibly evicted the crowds at the beach. The unruly crowd has reportedly set the Ice House police station near Marina beach and other vehicles on fire.

Students leading the Jallikattu protests here torched several vehicles and fought pitched battles with police after they were forcibly evicted from the Marina beach here.

Furious that they had been ousted from the beach, the pro-Jallikattu protesters set fire to the vehicles parked at the Ice House police station and attacked police personnel with bricks and stones.

Fire tenders battled the flames.

A large posse of police personnel swooped on the huge crowd which had massed at the sprawling beach since January 17 and began to drag away the young protesters.

There was bedlam as others tried to pull back those being taken away.

The police then used batons to disperse the mobs. As people ran from the beach and collected on nearby streets, there was more violence.

The trouble was intense in Triplicane area near the beach.

The police also fired tear gas to disperse the crowds who assembled on several roads leading to the beach and hurled stones at security personnel.

All routes leading to the Marina have been cordoned off.

In Madurai too, youths who have been staging protests demanding the lifting of the 2014 Supreme Court ban on Jallikattu, the traditional bull taming sport, fought with police on the streets.

The eviction in Chennai began after week-long protests across Tamil Nadu.

The demonstrators want an amendment to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act so that Jallikattu can be held without legal hurdles.

The police action came as the Tamil Nadu assembly met here on Monday for the first time this year with Governor C.H. Vidyasagar Rao’s address.

In Coimbatore, the police pounced on a protester who stood up with a kerosene canister and threatened to self-immolate. They were successful in taking away the inflammable liquid.

The government on Sunday organised Jallikattu in several places following the promulgation of an ordinance.

The demonstrators want the central government to take out bulls from the list of performing animals.

P. Rajasekhar, President of the Jallikattu Pathukaapu Peravai, has urged people to call off their agitation.

‘Hip-Hop Tamizha’ Adhi, a rap musician whose song in support of Jallikattu attracted the protesters, distanced himself from the crowds as they were moving in a different direction, he said.

While many are upset with the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for opposing Jallikattu, in most protest venues slogans were raised against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam.

Some placards held by a few protesters were vulgar and there were random calls demanding a separate Tamil land.

Further, thousands of regular commuters have been facing inconvenience due to cancellation of trains after the demonstrators squatted on rail tracks.

The Southern Railway on Monday announced cancellation of 16 trains.

“Around 40,000 passengers are affected daily due to disruption in train services,” a railway official told IANS.

Meanwhile, DMK leader M.K. Stalin condemned the police action as authoritarian.

PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss said the party was withdrawing its plans to hold Jallikattu protests on January 26 as the government had passed an ordinance permitting the sport.

180 missing people presumed dead after shipwreck

January 17, 2017 by Nasheman

East African survivors from latest disaster off Libyan coast recount harrowing details from Saturday’s sinking.

by Al Jazeera

Four people are dead and nearly 180 are missing, presumed dead, after a ship capsized in the Mediterranean on Saturday, officials said after interviewing a handful of survivors.

Humanitarian workers from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) recounted harrowing details of the latest major tragedy in waters off Libya after talking to four rescued passengers – two Eritreans and two Ethiopians – who arrived on Monday evening in the Sicilian port of Trapani.

The survivors, three men and one woman, were described as “traumatised and exhausted”. They said their two-tier, wooden boat had left Libya on Friday with more 180 people packed on board, all of them originally from East Africa.

After five hours at sea, the engine cut out and the boat started to take on water. As it slowly sank, more and more of the people on board were submerged.

One of the survivors described a desperate effort to find his wife, who had taken a spot in the centre of the ship.

After hours in the water, the survivors were rescued on Saturday, 30 nautical miles from the Libyan coast, by a French boat operating as part of the European borders agency’s Operation Triton before being transferred to another agency ship, the Siem Pilot.

Siem Pilot, provided by the Norwegian coastguard, arrived in Trapani on Monday evening with the four survivors, four recovered bodies and 34 people rescued from another stricken boat.

The latest deaths and rescues follow a record year for the number of people trying to reach Europe on the western Mediterranean route from North Africa to Italy.

Some 181,000 people were registered at Italian ports in 2016 while the UNHCR recorded more than 5,000 deaths and presumed deaths on all migration routes across the Mediterranean.

Despite the mid-winter weather making crossings particularly perilous, the start of 2017 has brought no sign of departures slowing, with some 2,300 people already registered in Italy since January 1.

Death toll in Yemen conflict passes 10,000

January 17, 2017 by Nasheman

UN humanitarian aid office says 40,000 people also injured in the conflict while 10 million need ‘urgent assistance’.

The UN ranks the conflict in Yemen as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises [Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

The United Nations’ humanitarian aid official in Yemen has said that the civilian death toll in the nearly two-year conflict has reached 10,000, with 40,000 others wounded.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs’ Jamie McGoldrick said that the figure is based on lists of victims gathered by health facilities and the actual number might be higher.

McGoldrick also said that up to 10 million people need “urgent assistance to protect their safety, dignity and basic rights”, according to a separate social media post early on Tuesday.

The announcement marks the first time a UN official has confirmed such a high death toll in Yemen, the Arab world’s poorest nation.

“This once more underscores the need to resolve the situation in Yemen without any further delay,” UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said in New York.

“There’s been a huge humanitarian cost.”

The Yemen conflict pits Houthi rebels and allied forces against an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia.

The coalition began an air campaign in March 2015 to restore the internationally recognised government that fled the country after Houthis seized the capital Sanaa.

On Monday, reports said 34 people were killed and 16 others wounded during clashes between Houthis and pro-government forces in the southern Shabwa province.

New peace plan

McGoldrick’s remarks come as UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, held talks with Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, president of Yemen, in the southern city of Aden.

Ould Cheikh Ahmed is hoping to revive peace prospects in Yemen after Hadi rejected his proposed plan. He is due to report to the UN Security Council later this month.

The plan provides for a new unity government in Yemen and a rebel withdrawal from the capital and other cities.

“A peace agreement, including a well-articulated security plan and the formation of an inclusive government, is the only way to end the war that has fuelled the development of terrorism in Yemen and the region,” Ould Cheikh Ahmed said in a statement.

“I asked the president to act swiftly and engage constructively with the UN’s proposal for the sake of the country’s future.”

“The current political stalemate is causing death and destruction every day. The only way to stop this is through the renewal of the cessation of hostilities followed by consultations to develop a comprehensive agreement.”

Under the proposal, Hadi’s powers would be dramatically diminished in favour of a new vice president who would oversee the formation of the interim government that will lead a transition to elections.

The envoy has been holding talks in the Gulf region in recent weeks, including in Riyadh, where he met Yemen’s central bank governor to ease a cash crisis in rebel-held areas.

One of the poorest countries in the Arab world, Yemen slid deeper into chaos when the Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 to push back the rebels who had seized Sanaa and other parts of the country.

The United Nations ranks the conflict in Yemen as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

Bengaluru’s Mantri Mall shut after parapet wall collapses

January 17, 2017 by Nasheman

mantri-mall

Bengaluru: A major disaster was averted when the parapet wall at the city’s Mantri Mall collapsed at about 3 pm on Monday.

Hundreds of people were seen rushing out of the mall soon after the wall collapsed. The mall, located on Sampige Road was closed down after Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad withdrew its occupancy certificate; he ordered an inquiry.

A housekeeping staff suffered minor injuries and was admitted to KC General Hospital. Movies were stopped midway so that the mall could be evacuated.

An initial investigation by BBMP engineers said that the parapet attached to the rear wall of the mall, which connects the multiplex carried a series of air-conditioner ducts which leaked water and the seepage might have led to the collapse.

Sources say that the mall would remain shut till it is declared fit for people to visit.

Meanwhile, it is said that the affected wall was recently modified, but the air-conditioner ducts constantly leaked.

The fire personnel were called and they too helped in evacuating the mall.

Traffic woes

As people were being evacuated, the slow-moving traffic on Sampige Road got worse. The initial panic over the feared possibility that the building might collapse, added to the traffic woes.

Meanwhile, the mall authorities requested Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to seal the route that started from Mantri Square apartments as a precautionary measure.

What child molester told cops: It was ‘fun’, first did in 2001

January 17, 2017 by Nasheman

Sunil Rastogi

New Delhi: The 38-year-old man who was arrested here yesterday for allegedly sexually assaulting hundreds of minor girls told police he used to “derive fun” out of the act and had his “first prey” in 2001.

Sunil Rastogi also told the police he is superstitious and would travel to Delhi from Rudrapur in Uttarkhand only by Sampark Kranti Express and wore a red jacket every time he came here thinking it was “lucky” for him.

His parents stay in Gharoli area near New Ashok Nagar and he used to come once a week to visit them when he targeted the minor girls, they said.

He was sent to 14 days’ judicial custody by a court here.

During interrogation, after he was arrested on January 14, Rastogi said he used to “derive fun” out of sexually assaulting girls aged between 7-11 years, police said.

He used to target minor girls as he thought they could be cajoled and convinced easily and never targeted elder girls since they would fight him off or raise an alarm, they added.

The accused had allegedly “first preyed” on a minor girl in 2001 and thereafter he targeted many girls in Uttarakhand’s Rudrapur (where he currently stays), New Ashok Nagar (New Delhi) and Ghaziabad, police said.

They said the accused has has lost count of the number of girls he has assaulted, police said.

Rastogi said he would tell the young girls that their father had sent some clothes or articles for them and if they didn’t get convinced, he would pretend to make a phone call to their father, police said.

Sometimes, he also told girls their father had sent him to get them “gold earrings”, they added.

An investigating officer said Rastogi used to prey on girls in New Ashok Nagar since he had stayed there and was aware of the “dark and dingy spots”, and even the escape routes, where he could assault them, police said.

He wasn’t caught till now because he used to come in the morning and leave by the evening.

Many people didn’t lodge a complaint for fear of social stigma but after he was caught, several of them came to the police station accusing him of trying to assault their daughters, police said.

Last year, he was arrested in Rudrapur on similar charges and he was out on bail, police said. They said in 2006 also he was sent to Tihar jail in connection with an eve-teasing case.
