Sheena Bora murder: Indrani, Peter and Khanna booked for murder, trial begins

January 17, 2017 by Nasheman

Indrani Mukherjea

Mumbai: Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Tuesday framed murder charges against three accused – Indrani Mukerjea, Peter Mukerjea and Sanjeev Khanna – in Sheena Bora murder case.

The trail began at 12:30 pm in Mumbai today.

Sheena Bora, 24, the daughter of Indrani Mukerjea from a previous relationship, was allegedly strangulated in a vehicle on April 24, 2012, and later her burnt body was dumped in a bag in the forests near Gagode, in Raigad district adjacent to Mumbai.

The alleged murder of Sheena Bora came to light in 2015 when a former driver employed by the Mukerjeas confessed to the police for allegedly assisting Indrani in committing the crime.

Sheena was allegedly strangled to death by Indrani with the help of her former husband Sanjeev Khanna. She was killed for entering into a relationship with Peter`s son, Rahul from an earlier marriage.

Muthalik banned from entering Goa for 60 days

January 17, 2017 by Nasheman

Muthalik

Panaji: Sri Ram Sene leader Pramod Muthalik and his associates have been banned from entering poll-bound Goa for 60 days beginning tomorrow as authorities fear “serious law and order problems” if they are allowed to enter the state during the period.

Stating that election code of conduct has already been in place, the administration said in its order, “If Muthalik or any of its (Sene’s) associates are not prevented from taking entry in the State of Goa, then the same could lead to serious law and order problem and the aggressive statements of Muthalik will certainly affect peace, harmony and will create fear in the minds of public and tourists.”

Goa will go to polls to elect 40-member House on February 4.

The order cited a report from Superintendent of Police, North Goa, stating that entry of associations/members of Sri Ram Sene and its leader Muthalik is to be prohibited as their aggressive statements and comments could hurt the feeling of certain groups and create possibility of violence and serious law and order problems.

“This could adversely affect peace, harmony and create fear in the minds of the public and tourists,” as per the order.

In 2009, the Ram Sene men had allegedly attacked a pub in Mangalore, where women were beaten up. Muthalik had defended the attack saying that girls going to pub was against Indian culture.

Following the attack, the BJP government of Karnataka banned him from entering Mangalore. In response, he campaigned against BJP in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, calling it “corrupt and anti-Hindu”.

In 2014, Muthalik joined the BJP’s Karnataka state unit, only to be forced out within hours after protests from other members.

Dangal star Zaira Wasim posts apology for ‘offending people’

January 17, 2017 by Nasheman

Zaira Wasim

Mumbai: Zaira Wasim, who played the childhood of Geeta Phogat in the Aamir Khan movie Dangal has put up an apology on social media, for “offending and displeasing people”. Zaira also asked not to project her as a role model for Kashmiri youth.

After her meeting with the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, she was trolled in social media. Mehbooba Mufti had appreciated Zara and spoke to her about the native Kashmiri’s interest in creative endeavours. Her post led to several speculations ranging from whether her account was hacked, or whether she had received threats.

Zaira Wasim’s entire letter goes as follows:

This is an open confession/apology. I know that many people have been offended and displeased by my recent actions or by the people I have recently met. I want to apologise to all those people who I’ve unintentionally hurt and I want them to know that I understand their sentiments behind it especially considering that what had happened over the past 6 months but I hope people can also understand there are certain circumstances that emerge which one cannot control and I hope people still remember that I’m a just a 16 year old girl and I hope you treat me accordingly. I’m sorry for what I did but it was not a deliberate decision and I really hope people can forgive me.

There are few more things which are very important and I want to clear them as well. The first and foremost thing is that I am being projected as a role model for Kashmiri Youth. I want to make it very clear that I do not want anyone to follow in my foot steps or even consider me as a role model. I’m not proud of what I’m doing and I want everyone, especially the Youth to know that there are real role models out there whether they be in this time or in our history.

To even consider me as a role model would be disgracing them and their disgrace would be OUR DISGRACE! I do not wish to start an argument here, this was a just a mere confession from my end which I really wanted people to know. May Allah bless us and guide us.

Congress beats Akhilesh to it, announces UP alliance

January 17, 2017 by Nasheman

akhilesh

Lucknow: Prospects of a “grand secular alliance” in Uttar Pradesh today brightened with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav saying a decision on tying up with the Congress will be taken in a “day or two”.

“Decision on alliance (with Congress) will be taken in a day or two,” he said, buoyed by the Election Commission’s order recognising him as the President of Samajwadi Party and allowing him to retain the ‘bicycle’ symbol.

He was responding to a question on the possibility of tying up with Congress to crush communal politics during an informal chat with mediapersons at his residence here.

SP general secretary Ramgopal Yadav, a close aide of Akhilesh, expressed hope of a grand secular alliance to fight elections in the state.

Ramgopal said the final decision regarding forging an alliance with Congress will be taken by Akhilesh, but he expressed hopes that it will happen.

“It is Akhilesh Yadav who will decide on the alliance. But I am hopeful it will happen,” said Ramgopal, who has been a staunch supporter of Akhilesh during the intra-party tussle.

Giving enough indications that Congress was willing for such a tie-up, its spokesman and former Union minister RPN Singh was among the first to hail the EC order, saying it showed that Akhilesh enjoyed “90 per cent support” in the organisation as also among SP legislators.

With the poll process set in motion after the issue of notification today, hectic efforts are underway to hammer out such an alliance, with Congress being offered 90 to 100 seats by the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party, which is also trying to rope in Ajit Singh’s RLD as a junior partner.

Congress General Secretary incharge of Uttar Pradesh Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ramgopal Yadav from SP were said to be resolving some disputes over certain seats.

Uttar Pradesh has 403 Assembly constituencies where Akhilesh’s party would be contesting the majority of seats and was likely to have RLD as a junior partner in Western Uttar Pradesh, which was once a stronghold of Ajit Singh.

The three parties will have to race against time to finalise the seat arrangements in the next few days as the western Uttar Pradesh, where Ajit Singh enjoys some influence, goes to polls in the first two phases on February 11 and 15.

Samajwadi Party sources said the list of its party candidates will be released in a day or two.

There were reports that the three parties would come out with a common minimum programme.

Leaders from the three parties insist that the main task in Uttar Pradesh is to stop the Narendra Modi-led BJP from coming to power.

In the 2015 Assembly elections in Bihar, Congress had joined hands with JD(U) and RJD to form a grand alliance, which caused a major upset for BJP-led NDA which had won 31 of the 40 seats in 2014 Lok Sabha polls in Bihar.

Bollywood News Round Up

COPYRIGHT OWNERS CALL FOR COMPETITIVE PRICING OVER REGULATION BY TRAI

TRAI was given jurisdiction over carriage issues in the television sector at the start of 2004. Since then it has issued a number of price controls, which included: A price freeze across the entire industry in 2004 with a price cap of Rs. 5 per channel per subscriber in areas where addressable systems were not introduced; and More notably through the recent Draft Telecommunication (Broadcasting And Cable Services) (8th) (Addressable Systems) Tariff Order, 2016, which is likely to take effect from 1st Apr, 2017. The current draft order prescribes maximum retail price caps for pay channels, by genre, INR 10 (USD 0.15) for movie channels (a – la – carte), excluding taxes and further caps channels into 7 genres.

“As India continues to develop its thriving creative industry, a transparent, market – based environment free from mandated tariffs, is essential to build investor confidence and to foster the creation of quality content benefiting India’s consumers & its economy,” said Siddharth Roy Kapur, President of the Film & Television Producers Guild of India. “We believe that price controls should only be considered when the market lacks competition which harms consumers or where there is clear systemic market failure. It would be advantageous to abolish any restrictions on price and thereby encourage FDI investments in India — as is the case in countries such as Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore & South Korea, where the retail & wholesale rates are not subject to restrictions. A more economically efficient model would be to allow the market to determine prices while encouraging investment in quality content,” said Kulmeet Makkar, Chief Executive Officer of the Film & Television Producers Guild of India. Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios said, “Since the availability of content is not an issue in the context of the Indian market, restricting numbers / genres / mix tantamount to predetermination and therefore, pre – empts creativity. There can never be an exhaustive list of genres for Governments to determine any mix & TRAI’s intervention will have cataclysmic effect on the creative community as a whole as TRAI effectively has price capped creativity.” “Under the Copyright Act, 1957, a content owner has the freedom to monetize copyright works and enter into contracts to monetize content in a manner he deems fit. However the price restrictions imposed by TRAI interferes with this basic freedom. It risks stifling creativity and may force smaller companies out of the market – resulting in less choice for consumers,” said Uday Singh, Managing Director, Motion Picture Dist. Association (India) Pvt. Ltd. Sectoral regulations have seriously impeded the growth of the film sector. Despite active participation by global studios & broadcasters, investments in the sector have trickled down in the past few years. Indian studios & independent producers are also facing similar challenges. An open market environment can best guarantee that the film sector will not be distorted to the detriment of consumers, creators & providers.

SHOOJIT SIRCAR TO MAKE UNSUNG MARTYR UDHAM SINGH’S BIOPIC

Shoojit Sircar, whose production house Rising Sun Films has created a new benchmark on social thrillers with PINK, has begun work on his next directorial venture – a film that focuses on a real life forgotten hero Udham Singh. Based around the Indian Independence struggle and the unsung martyr Udham Singh, Sircar has been working on the film’s pre – production patiently, as this has been a passion project for him for years. Speaking about the film, Sircar said, “During my theatre days in Delhi, back in 1995 when I was still studying, I would go with a group to Punjab which was just coming out of a period of turmoil, and sing songs of communal harmony. I visited Amritsar & Jallianwala Bagh then and was greatly inspired by the story of this fiery revolutionary who shot dead Sir Michael O’Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab in British India, in London to avenge the massacre of 1919.” That Sircar has decided to focus on this film next is pre – destined. He has been hoping to make the inspiring story of this heroic martyr for a long time, but each time around, a film based on the Indian freedom struggle would come up and he would push his film to a later date. “I guess every film has its own destiny. But now the time has come to remind the people of our country about those behind the freedom we are enjoying today. Udham Singh’s name doesn’t find a mention in our textbooks, he was one of our silent heroes, but his daring & sacrifice marked a turning point in India’s history. After Bhagat Singh, he was one of our greatest martyrs and his vision for the country was very contemporary & relevant even today,” asserts the filmmaker who’s scouting for a leading man who can play this heroic role, which spans 30 – 40 years and will bring the Shaheed to life. The film will be made under Shoojit’s home banner Rising Sun Films and will be produced by his partner Ronnie Lahiri. To bring to life the story of Udham Singh, Sircar has begun shooting background scenes, and will film major portions in Punjab, Kashmir and parts of New Delhi. The film will also travel to Kolkata & London, for the assassination of General Dwyer took place in the United Kingdom. Simultaneously, even as he searches for a suitable hero to play this martyr, Sircar is working closely with writer Juhi Chaturvedi on a fresh, young love story. Sircar will be directing both films together. Talk about being prolific & a fantastic storyteller!

RIYAZ GANGJI & RESHMA GANGJI RINGING THE 1ST BELL

Libas by Riyaz Gangji has just gone public. It means that Libas has become the 1st Indian designer label to get listed on the National Stock Exchange of India. With an Initial Public Offering of Rs.68; Libas has done what many Indian designer houses & labels have been trying to do since the past half a decade. When approached, Riyaz Gangji explained the reason behind the move, “It’s easy to grow your company if you have people’s confidence. Once your brand has the top of mind recall, sales automatically happen. Of course, this does not mean that your product or service can suffer. In fact, now that we are publicly listed, there is an even bigger responsibility towards the people that the brand has.” Before the face show of the New Year; this comes across as much welcome news, especially when demonetization & the current currency crunch in the country has been a spirit dampener for many businesses, fashion included. An upbeat Riyaz Gangji added, “I think being able to do business with your
forte is very important. People will only notice numbers once the show is over.” Launching an IPO is a tedious & lengthy process and can consume up to 2 years! Leave alone the added compliance & responsibilities that it deposits to the promoters’ shoulders.” When asked Riyaz Gangji what motivated him to take up this task, he answered, “Just being creative was not giving me satisfaction, I reached a point where I wanted every city in the country to wear Libas. We want to touch the lives of as many people as possible, like an FMCG brand. And such sort of a scale was only possible through going public. His better half & partner Rashma Gangji in everything was ecstatic, with her joy knowing no bounds, “We are already present in Pune, Mumbai Ludhiana, Delhi & also in Dubai. We want to be available in every Tier 1 & Tier 2 city of India. That is the ultimate plan for now.” Deepak Sharma of Saarthi, Ravi Varanasi of NSE, Rahul Roy et al wished all the best to Reshma Riyaz Gangji & Nishant Mahimtura of Libas.

Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Bairavaa released on a huge scale on 12th Jan, 2017 and the film has had a tremendous 1st day opening collections across Tamil Nadu and other parts of the world. However the film has evoked mixed reviews from critics & audiences. The film’s original running length is above two hours & 40 minutes and this has lead to the general feeling that the film is too lengthy. Heeding to this response feedback, the makers of the film have decided to trim the length by cutting 7 minutes of the film from 14th January 2017. The trimmed version is expected to be screened and that may increase the positive feeling about the film.

Trisha recently became the victim of harsh attack by miscreants claiming to be Jallikattu supporters on recently. Later the actor was safely taken back with the timely intervention of a police personnel. The shooting was also eventually called off.
Meanwhile Trisha was also severely abused & harassed in social media by miscreants.

Vijay Stuns North Indian Stuntmen

Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s grand 60th film Bairavaa has hit the celluloid silver. screens this week. And the film’s director Bharathan in his exclusively detailed interview sounds modest in tone but his words exude confidence that the film has come out really well in all aspects and it will be a win – win for all stakeholders. It is not secret that Vijay has mastered the art of performing stunt sequences and he is a superior action hero amongst the current lot. In this film too he has performed all the risky stunt sequences without using any dupe artistes. In fact Bharathan reveals an interesting fact about Vijay’s flabbergasting performance in a particular risky fight scene.

Anupama Parameswaran Bags Mega Hero’s Movie

After Trivikram Srinivas roped her in for a brief yet curious role in A Aa, Anupama Parameswaran hasn’t had to look back. She successfully reprised her own role in the Telugu remake of Premam. A day before the release of her 1st full – fledged Telugu film, the Shatamanam Bhavati actress has confirmed that she will pair up with Ram Charan in Sukumar’s next! This should be considered her best Tollywood project ever. Sukumar must have cast her as the cute girl suits most for a villager’s role. In a recent interview, when Anupama was asked as to on what basis she picks up her roles, she said, “It is intuition & some invisible force that tells me. When it comes to Telugu, I consult Trivikram Garu if I am confused.”

RGV Downgrades Chiranjeevi’s Movie

Naga Babu may once again be angry with his “akku pakshi”. The Twitter Legend from Mumbai has taken oblique potshots at choosing a remake for a milestone movie. No star director can dare to praise Balakrishna’s movie and belittle Chiranjeevi’s in the same tweet, RGV being the only exception. “Hey @DirKrish Am supremely thrilled to hear my judgement went so right…….Congrats on the roaring talk of #GPSK…….100 Cheers to you & Balayya Salute to @DirKrish n Balayya for pushing Telugu cinema pride to skies with original content instead of bringing down with borrowed content.” Needless to say, by “borrowed content”, he means Khaidi No. 150, the remake of Kaththi.

Sai Pallavi Signs Her 2nd Telugu Movie

Is Sai Pallavi slowly becoming a Tollywoodian primarily? The extremely choosy Premam (Malayalam) sensation has just been signed for her 2nd Telugu movie. It’s the film to be directed by Mahesh Babu’s sister, Manjula. She will be cast opposite Sundeep Kishan in this Gemini Kiran production. Sai Pallavi has been rejecting one too many offers. After disappointing many, she finally chose Sekhar Kammula’s Fidha, in which she plays Varun Tej’s romantic interest. Looks like it’s only the script that matters to her, not factors like director, hero, et al. Since Manjula is making a comeback to films after many years, she must be out to tell a novel story.

Movie Review: Ok Jaanu is a delightful film oozing a lot of fuzzy warmth

January 16, 2017 by Shaheen Raaj

Ok Jaanu

Banner: Madras Talkies & Dharma Productions
Producers: Mani Ratnam, Apoorva Mehta, Hiroo Yash Johar & Karan Johar
Director: Shaad Ali
Star Cast: Aditya Roy Kapur, Shraddha Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Leela Samson,
Karan Nath et al
Music: A. R. Rahman

Director Shaad Ali’s biggest claim to fame has been the runaway hit film namely the Rani Mukherjee & Vivek Oberoi starrer Saathiya and sadly enough Shaad Ali still seems to have a Saathiya hangover. Besides Ok Jaanu happens to be the official remake of Dulquar Salman & Nithya Menen starrer O Kadhal Kanmani, Mani Ratram’s Tamil film.

Aditya Gunjal aka Adi (Aditya Roy Kapur) is a Video Game Developer & Tara Agnihotri (Shraddha Kapoor) is a student of architecture. Both have dreams of furthering their career by going to USA & Paris respectively. Once Adi & Tara bump into each other at a common friend’s wedding and hit off from there. Right at the outset Adi & Tara are extremely clear about what they want from their respective lives. Despite being career oriented, Adi & Tara start enjoying each other’s company very much. At the same time, they are in unison with the fact that, despite being in love, they will not get married, for their own personal reasons. A few days of knowing each other, Tara gets into a live – in relationship with Adi, who is himself living as a house guest with Gopi Shrivastava (Naseeruddin Shah) & his Alzheimer affected wife Charu Shrivastava (Leela Samson) in Mumbai. Adi gets a call to work in USA & Tara decides to go to Paris, it is then they realize that they will be missing each other’s company a lot.

The main flaw of Ok Jaanu is the writing part tackled by Mani Ratnam. That apart Shaad Ali’s directional skills, after a long hiatus (Kill Bill), leaves much to be desired. Musically ok barring the title track. A well – deserved mention should also go to Ravi K. Chandran (cinematographer) & A. Sreekar Prasad (editor).

Performance wise the Aashiqui 2 lead pair Aditya Roy Kapur & Shraddha Kapur are good and they enliven the proceedings with their excellent on – screen chemistry. On the other hand Naseeruddin Shah & Leela Samson have delivered a convincing act effortlessly. While the rest of the cast help in carrying the film forward with utmost ease.

Tail Piece: At the Box Office turnstiles OK Jaanu’s chances are fair as it is a film which will mainly appeal to the Gen X’s multiplex crowd. yet all said & done Ok Jaanu is a delightful film oozing a lot of fuzzy wamth.

Trump: Cut sanctions on Russia for nuclear arms deal

January 16, 2017 by Nasheman

Incoming US president says weapons should be reduced, weeks after joining Putin in call for nuclear expansion.

by Al Jazeera

Donald Trump, the US president-elect, has told a British newspaper that he will offer to end sanctions against Russia in return for a nuclear arms reduction deal with the Kremlin.

In an interview with The Times of London published late on Monday, Trump said he wanted nuclear weapons arsenals of the world’s two biggest nuclear powers – the United States and Russia – to be “reduced very substantially”.

“They have sanctions on Russia – let’s see if we can make some good deals with Russia. For one thing, I think nuclear weapons should be way down and reduced very substantially, that’s part of it,” Trump was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

However, on December 22 Trump tweeted that the US must “greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until the world comes to its senses regarding nukes”. Around the same time, Russian leader Vladimir Putin also called for the strengthening of “strategic nuclear forces”.

In Monday’s interview, Trump said that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), an alliance formed to counter the military power of the former USSR, has become obsolete.

NATO has not been “taking care of terror”, he said.

Trump also criticised Russia for its intervention in the Syrian war, describing it as “a very bad thing” that had led to a “terrible humanitarian situation”.

The interview was conducted by Michael Gove, a Conservative Party member and prominent Brexit campaigner who is known to be close to Rupert Murdoch, owner of Fox News.

In Moscow, members of parliament gave a mixed reaction to Trump’s statement on the sanctions imposed by the Obama administration on Moscow over the Ukraine crisis.

Konstantin Kosachev, head of the upper house of parliament’s international affairs committee, was cited by the RIA Novosti news agency as saying getting the sanctions annulled was not a goal in itself and not worth making security concessions.

But another Russian senator, Oleg Morozov, was quoted by the same agency as saying that Moscow would be ready to discuss the issue of nuclear cuts, something he said Russia itself favoured.

Russian connection

News of Trump’s plan came as the outgoing US intelligence chief said that Trump lacks a full understanding of the threat Moscow poses to the US.

Director of Central Intelligence, John Brennan’s message on national television came five days before Trump becomes the nation’s 45th president, amid lingering questions about Russia’s role in the 2016 election.

“Now that he’s going to have an opportunity to do something for our national security as opposed to talking and tweeting, he’s going to have tremendous responsibility to make sure that US and national security interests are protected,” Brennan said on Fox News, warning that the president-elect’s impulsiveness could be dangerous.

“Spontaneity is not something that protects national security interests,” Brennan said.

Questions about Trump’s relationship with Russia have dominated the days leading up to his inauguration.

Retired General Michael Flynn, who is set to become Trump’s national security adviser, has been in frequent contact with Russia’s ambassador to the US in recent weeks, including on the day the Obama administration hit Moscow with sanctions in retaliation for the alleged election hacking, a senior US official said.

After initially denying the contact took place, Trump’s team publicly acknowledged the conversations on Sunday.

“The conversations that took place at that time were not in any way related to the new US sanctions against Russia or the expulsion of diplomats,” said Mike Pence, the incoming vice president, also in an appearance on Fox News.

The contact, as Obama imposed sanctions, raised questions about whether Trump’s team discussed – or even helped shape – Russia’s response.

Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, unexpectedly did not retaliate against the US for the sanctions or the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats, a decision Trump quickly praised.

“Great move on delay (by V. Putin) – I always knew he was very smart!” Trump tweeted.

Trump has repeatedly called for a better relationship between the US and Putin’s government.

“I think he has to be mindful that he does not have a full appreciation and understanding of what the implications are of going down that road,” Brennan said.

Massive protests against Jallikattu ban in Tamil Nadu

January 16, 2017 by Nasheman

jallikattu

Chennai: Thousands of people on Monday took to the streets in Madurai’s Alanganallur town in Tamil Nadu protesting a ban against Jallikattu, the ancient and popular bull-taming sport that marks the Makar Sankranthi celebrations.

The protesters, including both men and women, have assembled in the town well known for conducting Jallikattu.

A large contingent of police personnel has been deployed in the town to prevent any violent incidents.

Meanwhile, Jallikattu was held defying then Supreme Court’s ban on it in Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu. In some places, rekla or bullock-cart races were held.

However, as Jallikattu was not allowed to be held, people hoisted black flags on their homes and shops remained closed at Alanganallur.

This time the sport was held in places traditionally not associated with Jallikattu so as to avoid the police preventing it.

Speaking to reporters here, Union Minister of State for Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan said the event should not be seen as defying the Supreme Court order but as an expression of people’s feelings.

He said organisations like PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) will submit the pictures taken on Monday to the Supreme Court and demand a ban on it.

Radharkrishnan felt that the apex court should not take into consideration such pictures as it is just a protest and nothing more.

In Jallikattu, a bull vaulter is expected to hang on to the bull’s hump for a stipulated distance or hold on to the hump for a minimum of three jumps made by the bull.

The Supreme Court in May 2014 banned the conduct of Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu. The court also held that bulls cannot be used as performing animals either for Jallikattu events or for bullock-cart races in the Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra or elsewhere in the country.

Ever since the ban order, people have been demanding that the central government take necessary legal steps to allow conduct of the sport.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on January 9 urged the central government to promulgate an ordinance enabling the conduct of Jallikattu/bull-taming sport during the Pongal festival.

But that did not happen, and led to protest demonstrations at several places across Tamil Nadu, culminating in a massive protest at Alanganallur.
