Remove photos of political leaders on all hoardings and ads: EC

January 10, 2017 by Nasheman

Narendra_Modi

New Delhi: The Election Commission has asked the poll machinery in the five poll-bound states to either cover or remove photographs of political leaders on all hoardings and advertisements which seek to project the achievements of any living political functionary or political party.

The commission gave these fresh directions by reiterating its instructions issued on December 12, 2004 after the chief electoral officer of Goa raised the issue after the election schedule was announced on January 4. The poll watchdog said photos in advertisements or hoardings of similar type should also be removed or “covered suitably” so that spirit of its instructions is fully complied with.

It, however, made it clear that hoardings put up by the government which convey general message to the masses on family planning or social welfare schemes “may be allowed to be displayed”. “However, all those hoardings, advertisements which seek or purport to project the achievements of any living political functionary or political party and which carry their photos or name or party symbol should be removed forthwith…

“…No political party or functionary can use public resources and incur or authorise expenditure from public exchequer to eulogise himself or itself or enhance his/its own or any political leader’s image,” it said.

The poll panel made it clear that such images or hoardings “undoubtedly amount to their individual/party election campaign at public cost”. Between February 4 and March 8, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur are going for Assembly polls and the Model Code of Conduct came into force on January 4 when the schedule was announced.

N. K. Dhabhar Cancer Foundation & Tata Memorial Centre Organised A Conference On Gynecological Oncology With 265 Doctors From Pan India At Tata Memorial, Parel.

N. K. Dhabhar Cancer Foundation (NKDCF), is a registered NGO which provides financial, emotional & social support to people with cancer & instills confidence, hope & courage to the patients & their families.

N. K. Dhabhar averred, “Our endeavor is to promote & integrate cancer treatment for every patient whether curable, palliative or terminal, as we believe every person has a right to live with care & dignity, at any stage of cancer. We provide monetary & medical assistance for cancer treatment, spread awareness on prevention & early detection of cancer, strengthen the existing cancer treatment facilities, promote research in cancer, and interact with National, International, Government, Professional Bodies & NGOs.”

N. K. Dhabhar continued, “Cancer detection camps are conducted with a new technology – I Breast Exam (IBE), and free Mammograms are provided to those who need further investigation. The long term goal of the foundation is to start a full – fledged Palliative Care & Wellness Center for cancer patients. Through this multidisciplinary approach, we seek to address physical, emotional, spiritual & social concerns that arise with advanced cancers. The N. K. Dhabhar Cancer Foundation wishes to raise funds to establish this state of the art center.

He concluded by saying, “Cancer has become an important public health problem. Cancers of the female reproductive tract & breast has a high incidence amongst Indian women. In India women’s diseases face much more challenges than the disease itself. If you talk about anemia, for the last 50 years, the Government has provided iron tablets to Indian women. In spite of that, India has one of the highest cases of anemia. So the problem is far greater than only affordability & access to the drug. We need to be working on many other barriers that are preventing access to medicines. For us, it is about completing the circle of awareness, diagnosis, advocacy & access. With a focused approach of redefining the standard of care & improving health outcomes, we see an opportunity of changing the way women’s cancers are treated in India. Step by step, day by day we can make a difference.”

N. K. Dhabhar Cancer Foundation, in scientific collaboration with Tata Memorial Hospital & the Association of Gynecological Oncologists of India has organized an important & unique conference, “The Year That Was 2016 & Master Class in Gynecological Cancers”.

Landmark publications from International journals & abstracts which were presented in important International conferences such as ASCO, SGO, ESMO, ESGO, IGCS et al were reviewed. These topics were discussed & debated, which will help in better understanding of new treatment options for cancer patients. The knowledge of the most recent techniques & data for developing new strategies to personalize therapies for patients is extremely essential for Best Practice.

This will be especially useful for the young doctors who are unable to attend these international conferences in which a significant amount of practice changing data that affects the optimal way to treat, manage & care for patients with Gynecological Cancers have been presented.

Riyaz Gangji & Reshma Gangji Ringing The 1st Bell

January 10, 2017 by Shaheen Raaj

deepak-sharmaravi-varanasiriyaz-reshma-gangji-nishant-mahimtura

Libas by Riyaz Gangji has just gone public. It means that Libas has become the 1st Indian designer label to get listed on the National Stock Exchange of India.

With an Initial Public Offering of Rs.68; Libas has done what many Indian designer houses & labels have been trying to do since the past half a decade.

When approached, Riyaz Gangji explained the reason behind the move, “It’s easy to grow your company if you have people’s confidence. Once your brand has the top of mind recall, sales automatically happen. Of course, this does not mean that your product or service can suffer. In fact, now that we are publicly listed, there is an even bigger responsibility towards the people that the brand has.”

Before the face show of the New Year; this comes across as much welcome news, especially when demonetization & the current currency crunch in the country has been a spirit dampener for many businesses, fashion included.

An upbeat Riyaz Gangji added, “I think being able to do business with your forte is very important. People will only notice numbers once the show is over.”

Launching an IPO is a tedious & lengthy process and can consume up to 2 years! Leave alone the added compliance & responsibilities that it deposits to the promoters’ shoulders.

When asked Riyaz Gangji what motivated him to take up this task, he answered, “Just being creative was not giving me satisfaction, I reached a point where I wanted every city in the country to wear Libas. We want to touch the lives of as many people as possible, like an FMCG brand. And such sort of a scale was only possible through going public.”

His better half & partner Rashma Gangji in everything was ecstatic, with her joy knowing no bounds, “We are already present in Pune, Mumbai Ludhiana, Delhi & also in Dubai. We want to be available in every Tier 1 & Tier 2 city of India. That is the ultimate plan for now.”

Deepak Sharma of Saarthi, Ravi Varanasi of NSE, Rahul Roy et al wished all the best to Reshma Riyaz Gangji & Nishant Mahimtura of Libas.

Indian women should cover themselves fully like Arab women: Mate Mahadevi

January 9, 2017 by Nasheman

mate-mahadevi

Dharwad: Expressing concern over increasing sexual assaults against women in Indian cities, first female Jagadguru Mate Mahadevi has urged the girls not to wear provocative dresses and avoid roaming in the night freely.

A female spiritual leader and president of Basava Dharma Peetha, Mate Mahadevi, said on Saturday that there had been an increase in sexual assaults against women as “girls roam in the night freely.”

Reacting to the molestation of girls during the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Bengaluru, the spiritual head of Lingayat community said that it was not right on the part of girls to behave “provocatively” wearing skimpy dresses on the pretext of New Year’s Eve celebrations. “Such conduct is an invitation to sexual perverts,” she said.

Mahadevi, who is also the president of Basava Dharma Peetha, said that in order to prevent such instances in future, girls should cover themselves up and a dress code should be introduced for them in colleges.

“Women are partly responsible for rapes against them and so is society. Porn movies too play a role. Therefore, a dress code on the lines of one in Arab countries should be introduced for women in India,” she said.

Meryl Streep uses Golden Globes to excoriate Trump

January 9, 2017 by Nasheman

Acceptance speeches at the 2017 Golden Globe awards used to attack and pillory the US president-elect.

Entertainment: 74th Golden Globe Awards

by Al Jazeera

US actors turned the 2017 Golden Globe Awards into a scathing attack on Donald Trump, with several of the evening’s winners using their acceptance speech to deride the president-elect.

The Golden Globes, organised by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, were handed out on Sunday in Beverly Hills, honouring the best of film and television.

Meryl Streep, who received a lifetime achievement award, said she had been heartbroken by Trump’s imitation of a disabled reporter during his campaign.

“There was one performance this year that stunned me,” Streep, 67, said.

“It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter.”

The three-time Oscar winner was referring to a 2015 incident at a South Carolina rally when Trump flailed his arms and slurred in his speech in an apparent mocking of New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski, who has a physical disability.

Trump in a series of tweets on Monday repeated his denial that he ever imitated the reporter.

“It kind of broke my heart when I saw it and I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life,” Streep said.

“This instinct to humiliate when it’s modelled by someone in the public platform by someone powerful it filters down into everybody’s life. Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence.”

While Streep did not name Trump directly, she used almost the entire speech to criticise his behaviour and policies, while calling for Hollywood to stand strong against any attacks and to support a free press through organisations such as the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The audience sat in stunned silence for much of it.

Streep earned a cheer from the crowd when she said that, “Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners”.

“If you kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not art,” she said.

Trump, who takes office on January 20, made a tough stance on immigration a cornerstone of his campaign. Hollywood actors and studio executives were mostly behind his Democratic party rival Hillary Clinton.

Streep ended her speech with a nod to her long-time friend, Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher, who died last month after a heart attack.

“As my friend, the dear departed Princess Leia, said to me once, ‘Take your broken heart and make it into art’,” Streep said, her voice cracking with emotion.

The Committee to Protect Journalists tweeted to the actress: “Thank you Meryl Streep for your generosity & support of our mission to protect journalists and press freedom around the world.”

‘Honouring popular vote’

The evening was presented by late night television host Jimmy Fallon, who fired off a fusillade of jokes, several aimed at Trump.

Fallon saluted the Globes as “one of the few places where America still honours the popular vote”, referring to the fact that Clinton got more votes in total than Trump.

Then, noting that Game of Thrones was among this year’s nominated series, he said some fans had wondered how that show would have unfolded had the childish, villainous King Joffrey survived, and not died, a while back.

“Well, in 12 days,” Fallon cracked, “we’re gonna find out”.

Perhaps he summed things up best by pointing to the notably bleak nominated film Manchester by the Sea – “the only thing from 2016”, he said, “that was more depressing than 2016”.

A bit later, Hugh Laurie, winning best supporting actor in a limited series for The Night Manager, kept the mordant party going with his acceptance remarks.

He began by voicing thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for his win at “the last-ever Golden Globes”.

“I don’t mean to be gloomy,” he went on, “it’s just that it has the words ‘Hollywood,’ ‘foreign’ and ‘press’ in the title.” Cheers rang out.

“I also think that, to some Republicans, even the word ‘association’ is slightly sketchy.”

Paul Verhoeven’s Elle won best foreign language film and its star, Isabelle Huppert, was crowned best actress in a drama. The French actress vowed: “Do not expect cinema to put up walls and borders.”

Trinamool launches nationwide protest seeking Modi’s ouster

January 9, 2017 by Nasheman

mamata-banerjee

Kolkata/New Delhi: Flaying the Centre over demonetisation, the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress on Monday launched a three-day countrywide protest demanding removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “save the country”.

Terming as “flop show” Modi’s November 8 decision of spiking Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes, Trinamool supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Banerjee said the party will hold demonstrations in Odisha, Punjab, Bihar, Manipur, Tripura, Assam and Jharkhand, besides West Bengal and the national capital.

“Trinamool Congress is organising nationwide protest against Modi Babu’s shameless flop-show,” Banerjee said in Kolkata.

Banerjee, who has been demanding a rollback of demonetisation, also called for removal of restrictions on the withdrawal of cash from banks and ATMs.

Holding placards with slogan “Modi Hatao Desh Bachao” (remove Modi, save the country), some 35 Trinamool MPs demonstrated in the national capital calling for setting up of a “National Government” at the Centre.

“Even after two months of the draconian decision, countless people across the country continue to suffer, while over a 100 people have lost their lives.

“Modi’s removal is a must to save the country. A National Government should be formed at the Centre,” Trinamool MP Sultan Ahmed said.

Banerjee on January 6 called for President Pranab Mukherjee’s intervention to “save the country” and mooted a National Government headed by BJP veteran L.K. Advani or Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley or Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
