Don’t celebrate Christmas, Vishwa Hindu Parishad warns schools in Aligarh

December 19, 2017 by Nasheman

Lucknow: A Vishwa Hindu Parishad affiliated activist group on Tuesday warned schools in Aligarh of dire consequences if they celebrated Christmas.

The Hindu Jagran Manch, in a letter to all city schools, has said that if the festival is celebrated by them they would be doing it “at their own risk”.

The warning has sent the jitters down the spines of missionary schools across the city who have been celebrating Christmas, the birthday of Lord Jesus Christ, with gaiety every year.

Soon after the news spread, school managements expressed concern over the warning and called for security.

“We have been celebrating Christmas for so many years and every child takes part in it so happily, how can some fringe elements decide on what is to be done and what not,” said a school principal on the condition of anonymity.

Senior Superintendent of Police Rajesh Pandey when contacted told IANS that there was no question of allowing anyone or any group to disrupt any festivities at the city schools. “Anything that is illegal will not be allowed and such designs will be foiled,” he added.

Rohingya villages razed despite refugee deal: HRW

December 18, 2017 by Nasheman

Myanmar continued to destroy Rohingya villages just days after signing a refugee resettlement deal, according to a rights group.

Satellite images of Myanmar published by Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Monday revealed destruction in 40 Rohingya villages since October.

“The Burmese army’s destruction of Rohingya villages within days of signing a refugee repatriation agreement with Bangladesh shows that commitments to safe returns were just a public relations stunt,” said HRW Asia director, Brad Adams.

The organisation said the number of completely or partially destroyed Rohingya villages since Myanmar began its campaign targeting the largely Muslim ethnic group now stood at 354.

Citing evidence, HRW said villages may have been targeted as recently as early December, despite a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Myanmar and Bangladesh to allow Rohingya refugees to return home in late November.

In August, the Burmese military launched a military campaign ostensibly targeting Rohingya armed groups, but which the Rohingya people, rights groups, journalists, foreign states, and the UN have said is targeting ordinary civilians.

Rohingya refugees who have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh have shared accounts of destroyed homes, rapes, and mass killing.

Future proceedings
The HRW report comes as the UN Commissioner for Human Rights, Prince Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, reiterated his belief that what was happening to the Rohingya could amount to genocide.

He told the BBC that the perpetrators of abuses against the ethnic group could one day be brought to trial in international courts.

Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi may not be excluded from possible future proceedings, he said.

More than 600,000 members of the Rohingya community have fled to Bangladesh, where they live in enclosed camps.

The group has long been the target of discriminatory practices in Myanmar, including the withdrawal of citizenship rights and lack of access to state services.

Turkey ‘to seek UN General Assembly vote’ on Jerusalem

December 18, 2017 by Nasheman

Thousands gather to protest the US Jerusalem move in Ankara [Anadolu]

by Umut Uras, Al Jazeera

Turkey is concentrating efforts on passing a resolution at the UN General Assembly against the US decision to recognise occupied Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Ankara is leading the push in the General Assembly because a draft resolution to be voted on by the UN Security Council on Monday is expected to be vetoed by Washington, Turkish officials told Al Jazeera.

The United States is one of the five veto-holding permanent members of the top UN body with 15 members.

Following Monday’s Security Council session, Turkey, Palestine and other parties are expected to try to push the issue to the UN General Assembly, where all 193 members of the international organisation are represented.

President Donald Trump on December 6 announced the US decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, deviating from decades-old policy and the international consensus that the city’s status should be resolved through peace talks.

The UN Security Council draft resolution drafted by Egypt, and seen by Al Jazeera, “affirms that any decisions and actions which purport to have altered, the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council.”

“In this regard [the draft resolution] calls upon all states to refrain from the establishment of diplomatic missions in the Holy City of Jerusalem,” it said.

‘Uniting for Peace’
Turkish foreign ministry sources, who asked to remain anonymous, told Al Jazeera that as it was clear the draft resolution will be vetoed by the US at the UN Security Council, Turkey was concentrating efforts [against the US move] at the UN General Assembly.

The issue is expected to be taken to the UN General Assembly under Resolution 377A, known as the “Uniting for Peace” resolution, Turkish sources said.

The 1950 Resolution 377A says if the Security Council fails to exercise its primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, the General Assembly shall consider the matter immediately.

“The resolution can be passed by getting at least two-thirds of the votes of the members of the UN General Assembly. We already have this number, but Turkey, as well as the other OIC members, are working hard to increase it,” the foreign ministry sources said.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) founded in 1969, bills itself as “the collective voice of the Muslim world”.

Turkey has been highly vocal in criticising the US administration over its Jerusalem decision, leading calls at last week’s 57-member OIC summit in Istanbul last week to recognise East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.

‘Likely to look like 2012 vote’
Taha Ozhan, a ruling party MP and chair of the Turkish parliament’s foreign affairs commission, told Al Jazeera that Ankara’s efforts against Trump’s move put pressure on the countries in the region to speak up on the issue.

“Turkey has triggered this, and regional actors are reacting,” he said.

“A possible vote in the General Assembly will remind us of the scenes we saw a few years ago in the vote there for Palestine to be a non-member observer state, in which only the US, Israel and few more countries voted against the move, dominated by the rest of the members.”

In the 2012 vote at the General Assembly, Palestine was given non-member observer status with 138 votes cast for the resolution and nine votes against it.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that Ankara intended to open an embassy for Palestine in East Jerusalem.

“Given that Jerusalem is under occupation, we cannot just go and open an embassy there. However, our consulate general in Jerusalem is already represented by an ambassador … The day is close when officially, with God’s permission, we will open our embassy there,” he said, in an address in the southern province of Karaman.

Palestinians view East Jerusalem, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967, as the capital of their future state while Israelis see the city as a whole as their capital.

Thousands of Turkish protesters marched in various parts of the country through the weekend, carrying anti-US and anti-Israel signs and shouting slogans against the two countries.

Rakul Preet Singh Still Waiting

Rakul Preet Singh is still waiting to be Harish Shankar’s heroine. Rakul Preet Singh has been waiting to sign her next Telugu film, but there haven’t been many offers. Although she is a top league actress in Telugu, her films have fared badly of late making producers & directors to think twice about casting her. With a series of flops this year like Winner, Jaya Janaki Nayaka & SPYder her success ratio has come down drastically. Thankfully, Khakee did well at the Box – Office turnstiles, but like in SPYder, Rakul Preet Singh’s role was highly criticized. So, what will be her movies in 2018? As of now, she is said to have signed director Harish Shankar’s multi – starrer. And being an author backed role, Rakul Preet Singh is said to have given her nod to it. The film will of course have two heroes and one other heroine. On the other hand, while Rakul Preet Singh was the 1st choice for Ram Charan’s film with Sreenu Boyapati, the makers are thinking of casting Anu Emmanuel or Raasi Khanna in the film. Meanwhile, Anu Emmanuel has already given her nod.

Keeping their attire to simple jeans & tees, the alleged love – birds didn’t seem to mind the shutterbugs on their date night in the city. The couple was 1st photographed together in Jul this year when Michael Corsale came to Mumbai to spend some time with his lady love as their hectic schedules & distance left them with little time for romance. In 2012, Lalludas defeated Patel by nearly 25,000 votes.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi, the party’s star campaigner, had extensively campaigned in Unjha during his Navsarjan Yatra. On his visit to the region, Gandhi also prayed at the Umiya Mata temple, close to Vadnagar – where Modi was brought up.

Weeks before the election process began in Gujarat where the BJP has been in power for the last 22 years, Modi inaugurated Umiya Dham Ashram in Haridwar for the pilgrims from the region visiting the Hindu holy city on the bank of the Ganges.
