After Congress released its first list of candidates for Karnataka elections, a lot of political friction can with witnessed today with disgruntled MLAs meeting former railways minister Mallikarjun Kharge over the issue of denial of tickets.
Congress ticket aspirants Anajanmurthy’s followers went on a rampage after he was denied a ticket. While the protesters burned tyres on the highway near Nelmangala, another aspirant, Kalappa expressed his displeasure on Twitter. Earlier in the day,
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who had earlier announced to contest elections, declared on Monday that his party will not contest the upcoming polls and will extend support of JD(S). He said that both Congress and BJP have failed and hence, he has decided to campaign for H D Deve Gowda’s party. In another development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be paying tribute to 12th century Lingayat philosopher and social reformer Basaveshwara at his statue on the banks of the river Thames during his visit to the United Kingdom this week. The event will be organised by The Basaveshwara Foundation, a non-profit organisation-based in the UK that has installed the statue of Basaveshwara on the bank of river Thames.

Convinced Trump to remain in Syria: Macron
French President Emmanuel Macron said that he “convinced” his American counterpart Donald Trump to remain in Syria before the coordinated strikes launched against targeted Syrian government sites in response to an alleged chemical attack, the media reported.
“Ten days ago, President Trump said the US’s will is to disengage from Syria. We convinced him that it was necessary to stay,” CNN quoted Macron as saying on Sunday during a two-hour televised interview with several French media outlets.
On Friday night, the US, France and the UK launched a series of strikes on a research laboratory and two storage facilities associated with Syria’s chemical weapons programme.
Satellite images of the facilities, located west of Homs and near the capital Damascus, before and after the strikes appear to show they suffered extensive damage.
France also convinced Trump that the strikes had to be limited to suspected chemical weapons sites, Macron added.
Prior to the strikes, there had been reports that Trump wanted to see tougher, more extended action in Syria but was talked down by his national security team.
The strike was fiercely condemned by Syria’s main ally Russia, who attempted to bring a motion in the UN Security Council on Saturday to denounce the “aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic by the US and its allies”.
During Sunday’s interview, Macron said Russian President Vladimir Putin was an “accomplice” to Syria’s alleged use of chemicals weapons.
“They have not used chlorine themselves, but they have methodically contributed to the international community’s powerlessness to prevent the use of chemical weapons by diplomatic means,” CNN quoted the French leader as saying.
The French President said his country had not declared war on Syria, calling the strikes a “reprisal” for violations of the treaty banning the use of chemical weapons.
“There has been repeated and proven violations of the treaty,” he said.
Friday night’s strikes were a response to the suspected chemical weapons attack on civilians in Douma, outside Damascus, on April 7 where over 70 people including children were killed.
Inspectors for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) were due to go to Douma on Sunday after arriving in Syria shortly after Saturday’s strikes, and are yet to report on any findings.
The US and its allies have been criticized for acting before inspectors had a chance to examine the site.
Politicians in France and the UK on Monday will seek answers from the countries’ leaders about their decision to launch strikes without formal approval.
Protests against the strikes were held around the world Saturday, including in major cities in the UK, Mexico, Greece and the US.

Congress first list announced Muslim representation down from 2013 : Karnataka Assembly 2018
Out of the 218 names announced by the Congress in its first list of candidates, only 15 Muslims have been given tickets. Several Muslim leaders are upset with the list and say that more representation ought to have been given.
The Muslims form a large chunk of the population in Karnataka and their votes are crucial for the prospects of the Congress. Raising this issue, former MP Rehman Khan said that they were promised more tickets.
He said that he was unhappy with the representation given to the Muslims. In 2013, 19 Muslim candidates were fielded, but this year it has come down to 15, he said. He said that he would meet with Rahul Gandhi and take up the issue.
Rehman Khan also questioned why his son was denied a ticket. His son, Mansoor Ali was an aspirant but does not feature in the list of 218 released by the Congress on Sunday. He wanted to know why his son was not given a ticket from Jayanagar despite the constituency having a high number of Muslims. The ticket here was given to Sowmya Reddy, daughter of Karnataka minister, Ramalinga Reddy. The Congress is yet to announce the names of six more candidates on Monday. The name of N A Haris was not announced from the Shanthinagar constituency. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah hinted that he is likely to get a ticket from this constituency.
Cong list has disappointed Siddaramaiah supporters
By R. Narayan
Mysuru, Apr 16 (HS): The Congress list of Karnataka Assembly election contestants released on Sunday has disappointed more than it has pleased. This is one of the conclusions one can draw from protest rallies and demonstrations in different parts of the state after the list was made public.
Among those who hit the road expressing resentment were supporters of chief minister Siddaramaiah in north Karnataka who were expecting him to fight from Badami constituency in addition to Chamundeshwari in Mysuru district.
Their hope was not based on rumour but hard facts. His office had even announced the date when he was scheduled to file nomination papers from the two seats. The date given for Badami was April 23 and Chamundeshwari April 20.
Their disappointment can be better understood in the light of two facts: one the sitting MLA from Badami had agreed to leave the seat for the chief minister and, two, it was a safer constituency, safer than Chamundeshwari. To all of them the list has come as a shock. Badami seat has been offered to Deoraj Patil.
Some state party leaders see a party president Rahul Gandhi stamp in this decision. “His contesting from two seats would have sent a wrong signal that even the political head of the state is shaky, let alone others”, said one of them.
However, there are others in the party who believe that the Siddaramaiah had a say in the list. According to them, most of his followers have been given tickets. However, he may be a little disappointment because some party hoppers who he disliked have been also accommodated.
As many eight persons who had joined the party recently and had belonged to either the Congress or the Janata Dal (S) will be given Congress symbol.
There is also resentment in the Muslim community because only 15 members of the community have been selected. Nineteen Muslim candidates had fought the previous state Assembly elections. An equal number of women will seek elections on behalf of the party.
There is a section in the party which is angry with the party leadership for selecting even those who were not runners-up and had fared badly. A name mentioned in this connection by many was that of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president.
Party rivals, the BJP and the JD (S), are critical of the party for allotting seats to family members of sitting Assembly members. Their number is given as four. One such member is Ramalinga Reddy, minister for revenue, whose daughter Soumya, will contest May 12 elections along with others.
Another highlight of the list is re-selection of film actor Ambareesh for Mandya seat.

I can be raped, killed: Lawyer for Kathua rape victim’s family gets threat
‘I don’t know how long I will be alive. I can be raped…My modesty can be outraged,’ Lawyer Deepika S Rajawat said.
Amid nation-wide protests against the rape and murder of 8-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua, the lawyer of the victim’s family says that she has been receiving threats and said she will approach the Supreme Court requesting protection.
Lawyer Deepika S Rajawat says she fears she can be “raped or killed”.
I was threatened yesterday that ‘we will not forgive you’. I am going to tell the Supreme Court tomorrow that I am in danger,” Rajawat said on Sunday.
On Monday, the victim’s father requested the Supreme Court to shift the trial outside Jammu and Kashmir, citing safety and security for his family.
“We don’t think there is conducive atmosphere in Kathua for the trial,” said Rajawat.
Last week, Rajawat appeared on a television channel and alleged that she was threatened by Jammu Bar Association president BS Slathia from appearing in the case.
“I am not a member of the Jammu Bar Association. But on Wednesday, Slathia asked me to stay away from the case while I was going to the court. I am not answerable to him, I am only answerable to my client,” she told TV channels.
“I am not scared, but I am not feeling safe either. Protesters (lawyers) are trying to put pressure on me so that I don’t fight for justice. But I will continue to fight Asifa’s case. I have full faith in the police investigation,” Rajawat added.
The trial in the Kathua rape began from Monday.
The incident has left the country shocked and angry and thousands of protesters took to streets voicing their concern over security of girls and women.
Six men, including a retired revenue official, two police officers and a minor have been accused of kidnapping, gangraping and murdering the minor from the nomadic Bakherwal community in Kathua in January this year. Two other policemen have been charged with trying to cover up the crime for money.
The girl’s body was found on January 17. After the accused were arrested, a group called the Hindu Ekta Manch took out protests in which two BJP ministers and a lawyers’ body linked to the Congress participated.
The case gained national attention after a police chargesheet revealed that the girl was kept in a local temple, gangraped repeatedly, and kept sedated and without food before being strangled. Her head was also smashed with a large rock. Just before she was killed, one of the accused, a police officer, insisted on raping her one last time.
A group of lawyers had tried to present the police from submitting the chargesheet.
SC to hear petitions in Kathua rape & murder case @ 2 PM
The Supreme Court will hear two separate petitions on the Kathua rape and murder case on Monday (April 16) @ 2 PM.
One petition has been filed by a Kathua-based lawyer, representing the family of the eight-year-old girl who was gangraped and killed.
Another plea filed by a Delhi-based lawyer seeks transfer of the case from Kathua trial court to a local court in the national capital. The plea also sought transfer of probe to the CBI, besides seeking exemplary compensation to the family of the victim of the case.

M’luru corporator Prathibha Kulai adds Kathua rape victim’s name to that of daughter’s
Close on the heels of a Kerala reporter naming his new born daughter after Kathua rape victim, here in Mangaluru, a Mangaluru City Corporation Corporator has taken the step of renaming her eight-year-old daughter after the eight-year-old girl who was gangraped and murdered in Kathua.
Addressing a news conference, on Monday Corporator Prathibha Kulai said that the Kathua rape incident has marred the pride of Indians.
However, in memory of the little girl who was subjected to atrocities that words cannot express, Prathibha said that her daughter Prithvi will have Kathua rape victim’s name prefixed to her name henceforth.
“I feel ashamed to call myself an Indian. I say this despite knowing it well that the ‘BJP Hindus’ will attack me over my views. But, this is not the kind of Hinduism that I was taught. My religion teaches me to love all religions,” she said holding the government and the law responsible for rising number of rape cases in the country.
Recalling the infamous pub and church attack incidents in Mangaluru, she said that it was imperative for women to think and cast their vote in favour of party that secures the rights of women.
Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she said that his slogans- ‘Beti Padao, Beti Bachao’ holds little significance because it so seems that he has scant respect for women himself.
Speaking about UP CM Yogi Adityanath, she said that he too does not know the pain of a woman.
She said that some of the BJP youth had misbehaved with her during the Lok Sabha polls, when she was out for campaigning and she is running from pillar to post seeking justice.
