China, Russia listening to Trump’s cellphone calls: NYT

October 25, 2018 by Nasheman

Washington A New York Times report has claimed that when US President Donald Trump calls old friends on one of his iPhones to “gossip or gripe”, Chinese and Russian spies were routinely eavesdropping on the calls.

The daily cited American intelligence agencies over the claims which were published on Wednesday.

The spies were often listening and “putting to use invaluable insights into how to best work the President and affect administration policy”, according to current and former American officials.

Trump’s aides have repeatedly warned him that his cellphone calls are not secure, The New York Times said.

But the aides have said that the President, who has been pressured into using his secure White House landline more often these days, has still refused to give up his iPhones.

White House officials say they can only hope he refrains from discussing classified information when he is on them.

The American intelligence agencies had learned that China and Russia were eavesdropping on the President’s cellphone calls from human sources inside foreign governments and intercepting communications between foreign officials.

The agencies have also determined that China was seeking to use what it was learning from the calls – how Trump thought, what arguments tend to sway him and to whom he was inclined to listen – to keep a trade war with the US from escalating further.

The Chinese have also pieced together a list of the people with whom Trump regularly speaks in hopes of using them to influence the President, the officials said.

Russia was not believed to be running as sophisticated an influence effort as China because of Trump’s apparent affinity for President Vladimir Putin, The New York Times quoted a former American official as saying.

The Chinese and the Russians “would look for any little thing – how easily was he talked out of something, what was the argument that was used”, said John Sipher, a 28-year veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency who served in Moscow in the 1990s and later ran the agency’s Russia programme.

Officials said the President has two official iPhones that have been altered by the National Security Agency to limit their abilities and a third personal phone.

Trump keeps the personal phone, White House officials said, because unlike his other two phones, he can store his contacts in it.

None of them are completely secure and are vulnerable to hackers who could remotely break into the phones themselves.

2nd ODI: Kohli heaps praise on West Indies players

October 25, 2018 by Nasheman

Virat Kohli heaped praise on the West Indies players after the two teams played out an exciting tie in the second One-Day International (ODI) here on Wednesday.

The visitors scored 321/7 in their 50 overs in response to the Indian total of 321/6. This was only the second ODI draw between the two teams. The first one was on December 6, 1991 during the Benson and Hedges World Series in Perth, Australia.

“It was a great game of cricket, great to be part of it. Full house and credit to the West Indies team as well, they showed great heart. Specially in the second innings, when they got stuck in despite being three down,” Kohli said after the match.

“In big tournaments, we might be batting first and we have to embrace every challenge that comes our way. The pitch was drastically different, we put up a challenge in front of us today and luckily we got the draw, we will take it happily,” he added.

“When the run rate fell under 6, I thought they had good chance, and the game nicely drifted in the last 7 overs and one boundary off Umesh off the shoe and that boundary from Rayudu just a few inches, I’m sure everyone enjoyed and the Windies deserved a draw at least and I think we deserved a draw too.”

Kohli also praised Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer, who boosted the visitors with a crucial 143-run partnership.

The duo had come together when the West Indies were struggling at 78/3 after 12 overs. Their partnership proved to be the launchpad for an almost successful chase and when Hetmyer went back to the pavilion in the 32nd over, the visitors were in with a strong chance to win the game.

Hope remained unbeaten on 123 runs off 134 deliveries while Hetmyer was unlucky to miss out on what would have been a well deserved century when he was dismissed on 94 by Yuzvendra Chahal.

“Beautiful partnership between both those guys but the way two teams played it was a fair result. Shai has got great talent. Hetmyer as well. They took on us and didn’t give us any chance whatsoever,” Kohli said.

Kohli scored yet another authoritative century to anchor the hosts to a comfortable position. In the process, the 29-year-old skipper also reached a personal milestone of becoming the fastest batsman to reach 10,000 ODI runs.

Coming into the match, 81 shy of the 10,000-run mark, Kohli got to the landmark in style, before racing to his sixth century of 2018 in a mere 106 balls. With the knock, Kohli also completed 1000 ODI runs in the calendar year.

“Personally, I’m pretty proud of my innings and my milestone. It’s something we decided pre-game, it was hot and humid,” Kohli said.

‘Honey Badgers’ creator looking forward to Indian adaptation

October 25, 2018 by Nasheman

Mumbai Israeli TV show “Honey Badgers” is getting an Indian twist, and its creator Naor Zion says he is really looking forward to it.

Aditya Birla Group’s Applause Entertainment has taken the right of the Armoza Formats’ scripted series. The Indian adaptation will be known as “Udan Patolas”.

Earlier in October, Zion met the team behind the ‘desi’ twist here.

“I’m really looking forward to the Indian adaptation of the show. Right from the first meeting, I had such a great impression of Applause and I remember telling my colleague that they couldn’t have cast better,” Zion said in a statement.

“I must say everyone, from the director, producer and the entire team at Applause have done very intelligent work in the way they have adapted the show.

“Armoza is the pioneer of the selling formats in Israel and I think there are many similarities in both the firms, which I think is a good sign,” he added.

Directed by Shakti Sagar Chopra and produced by Sol Production, “Udan Patolas” revolves around four Punjabi girls — Amarinder Gill, Noorpreet Dhillon, Punni Chandok and Lovely Singh Chabbra. It tells story of their journey in Mumbai with focus on the unbreakable sisterhood.

It features Sukhmani Sadana, Apoorva Arora, Poppy Jabbal and Aasttha Ssidana.

Sameer Nair, CEO, Applause Entertainment, said: “‘Udan Patolas’ is a fun tale of four young women in Urban India and will resonate with everyone. The original series dwelt on the relatable journeys of its lead characters with wit and charm.

“Adapting its context to a customised Indian setting and story makes for a delightfully entertaining show.”

The original show follows the lives of four small-town friends who change their identities to get jobs at one of the world’s top financial firms. They fake it all to appear more sophisticated and achieve their fantasy of opening up their own investment company.

Fazila Allana, founder and producer, Sol Production Pvt Ltd, feels “Udan Patolas” will be “fun, quirky, interesting, observational and thought provoking”.

Pandalam Royal family hits back at Chief Minister Vijayan

October 24, 2018 by Nasheman

A day after Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan slammed the Pandalam royal family for claiming rights and powers over the Lord Ayyappa shrine, the latter hit back on Wednesday, saying the family has carried out what it is entitled to.

Vijayan has said the Sabarimala temple is the property of the Travancore Devasom Board (TDB) and that none else has any rights over it. He said on Tuesday that according to the 1949 covenant, the Sabarimala temple ownership was handed over to the TDB after the royal family had serious financial crisis.

But spokesperson for the family, Sreekumar Varma, told the media that the TDB has only administrative control over the temple.

“The real owners of the temple are the devotees and the TDB has only administrative control. The relation that the family has with the Sabarimala temple does not change every five years,” said Varma, obliquely criticising Vijayan’s remarks.

Varma’s statement was meant to emphasise that whenever the Left government comes to power — with opposition UDF and LDF taking turns to rule the state — it takes position contrary to the Congress-led UDF’s, which has maintained that it’s the ‘tantri’ and the Pandalam royal family whose views matter about Sabarimala.

“The events that occurred at the temple since it opened on October 16 and closed on Monday appear to have gone according to a perfectly written script by vested interests. What happened at the temple town was something avoidable. The temple turned into a conflict zone. We are deeply pained at the manner in which Vijayan spoke with absolute contempt,” said Varma.

“We wish to make it very clear: we are not at all interested in the wealth of the temple and maybe there will be some, who have an eye on its wealth and we have to find out who they are. We have not asked for a single rupee from the TDB . Our only concern and worry is that there should be no breach of traditions,” added Varma.

Leader of opposition Ramesh Chennithala said in the state capital on Wednesday that Vijayan had only complicated the situation by his outburst.

“Vijayan has declared a war on the devotees. His outburst against the Pandalam royal family and ‘tantri’ does not suit the post that Vijayan holds. The current impasse will end when Vijayan sheds his arrogance,” said Chennithala.
