India now meets others on its own terms: Modi

October 31, 2018 by Nasheman

Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel unveils 182-metre high ‘Statue of Unity’ in honour of country’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Kevadia, Gujarat on Oct 31, 2018. Also seen BJP chief Amiyt Shah. Narendra Modi said on Wednesday India now meets the world on its own terms and is moving towards becoming a economic and military superpower.

“India is moving ahead on the path shown by Sardar Patel. There was a time when we were seen as weak. But (Sardar Vallabhbhai)Patel turned those very weaknesses into our strength — showed us the right path,” Modi said unveiling the ‘Statue of Unity’ honouring the country’s first Home Minister.

Dedicating the 182-metre bronze figure to the nation, Modi said if we were connected from Rajasthan’s Kutch to Nagaland’s Kohima and Jammu and Kashmir’s Kargil to Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari, it was because of Patel’s determination.

The former Deputy Prime Minister played a major role in integrating over 550 princely states into the Indian Union after the Partition of 1947.

Unveiling the statue built on Sadhu Bet Island on Narmada river for Rs 2,389 crore, Modi touted it to be the world’s tallest — surpassing China’s Spring Temple Buddha that stands at 153 metres by 29 metres and nearly doubling the 93-metre Statue of Liberty in New York.

Goa beaches to open for swimming on Nov 1

October 31, 2018 by Nasheman

With Monsoon waning and post-monsoon showers receding, state appointed Drishti Lifesaving lifeguard agency, has started the process of setting up safe swim-zones along the state’s coastline, a statement issued said.

Cyclonic winds had triggered underwater and rip currents in the seas that had led to the deferring.

“Starting November 1, all beaches will be open for swimming and beach activity,” Drishti said.

The agency maps the weather and sea conditions each morning and accordingly sets up safe swim-zones along the beaches which are manned by its 600-strong lifeguard force.

Although most beaches in Goa are safe, Drishti advises all to adhere to some basic safety measures — ideally swim only in the swim-zones marked with red and yellow flags. Non swim-zones are marked with red flags.

There are signage at the entrance of each beach enlisting safety tips, the statement said, adding that 24 ‘no-selfie’ zones had been identified to prevent accidents.

Goa is one of the top beach tourism destinations in the country and attracts nearly eight million tourists, of which half a million are foreigners.

Modi unveils ‘Statue of Unity’

October 31, 2018 by Nasheman

Kevadia (Gujarat) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday unveiled the 182-metre high ‘Statue of Unity’ in honour of country’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and dedicated it to the nation.

Built on Sadhu Bet Island on Narmada river, the imposing statue is touted to be the world’s tallest.

The Rs 2,389 crore monument is a tribute to Patel who played a major role in integrating the princely states into the Indian Union after the partition of 1947.

It is almost 29 metres taller than China’s Spring Temple Buddha that stands at 153 metres, and almost twice as high as the 93-metre Statue of Liberty in New York.

Three Indian Air Force planes flew past the Patel figure and created the tricolour in the sky after Modi inaugurated the giant.

The Gujarat government expects the statue to boost tourism, with one estimate putting the daily numbers at 15,000.

Apart from the Patel bronze figure, other major attractions include inauguration of a 17-km-long Valley of flowers, a Tent City for tourists near the statue and a museum dedicated to the life and times of Patel.

The Tent City, located around four km from the Statue of Unity can house more than 500 tourists in one go.

A viewing gallery at a height of 153 metres has been created inside the statue to enable tourists to have a view of 1,210 metre long concrete Sardar Sarovar Dam, 3.2 km upstream as well as the nearby Satpura and Vindhya mountain ranges.

As per a government statement, the statue has been built using over 70,000 tonnes of cement, 18,500 tonnes of reinforced steel, 6,000 tonnes of structural steel and 1,700 tonnes of bronze, which was used for the outer cladding of the structure.

Modi was accompanied by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

Chhattisgarh Police ‘will foil Maoist threats during polls’

October 31, 2018 by Nasheman

Hours after Maoists killed two policemen and a Doordarshan cameraman, Chhattisgarh Police on Tuesday said it would not allow the rebels to disrupt the coming Assembly elections.

“Over 2,000 extra police personnel have been deputed in five districts where the first round of polling will take place in the first phase. The police personnel coming from outside to provide assistance are being trained to deal with Maoists,” Special Director General of Police D.M. Awasthi told the media.

“All Inspectors General and Deputy Inspectors General are determined not to allow any disruption during the polls,” he added.

Awasthi said the police had been successful in locating several land mines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in search operations.

He said all police personnel had been told to use lease number of vehicles during the operations to escape IED blasts — an old and effective method used by the Maoists to attack security personnel.

“All police personnel have been asked to go on foot during their operations,” the officer said.

Explaining the sequence of events leading to the incident, Awasthi, in a media briefing, refuted the apprehensions that the Maoist ambush was an attempt to disrupt the coming polls and said the act was to stop the construction of a road between Sameli and Nilaya.

“A team of CRPF’s 111 battalion had gone to the incident site to provide security to the persons involved in road construction between Sameli and Nilaya in Dantewada district. In the meantime, a Doordarshan team covering the construction work and poll-related developments in the area and a police team reached there.

“The Maoists opened fired at the police personnel and the media crew. Doordarshan cameraman and the two police personnel were hit by the Maoists’ bullets. The ambush was an attempt to scare away the contractor involved in the road construction. The incident has no relation with the upcoming polls.”

DD cameraman Achyuta Nanda Sahu, Assistant Sub-Inspector Rudra Pratap Singh and Constable Mangal Ram died in the ambush.

October 31, 2018 by Nasheman

CBI officer A.K. Bassi, who was investigating an alleged bribery case against the investigating agency’s Special Director Rakesh Asthana, on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court challenging his transfer to Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice K.M. Joseph said “we will see” as the counsel for Bassi sought an early hearing on the plea.

Seeking a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the allegation of bribery against Asthana, Bassi told the court that he was an investigating officer in the case and had gathered incriminating material when he was sent on leave by the government following an internecine war in the CBI.

4th ODI: Clinical India outshine Windies in style

October 30, 2018 by Nasheman

India dished out a clinical performance to outclass the West Indies by 224 runs, their biggest margin of victory against the Caribbean side, in the fourth One-day International (ODI) on their return to the Brabourne Stadium here on Monday.

The victory is India’s third biggest by margin of runs against any side. With the win, India also took a 2-1 lead in the five-match rubber with one match having been drawn.

After posting a massive 377/5, thanks to centuries from Rohit Sharma (162) and Ambati Rayudu (100), the home side relied on a disciplined bowling effort led by the rookie left-arm quick Khaleel Ahmed (3/13) and chinaman Kuleep Yadav (3/42) sharing six wickets between them, to skittle the tourists for a meagre 153 in 36.2 overs.

Facing a daunting target, the Windies never looked in the hunt with Khaleel ripping through the middle order, comprising Marlon Samuels (18), Shimron Hetmyer (13) and Rovman Powell (1) after the top three departed with mere 20 runs on the board.

Earlier, Bhuvneshwar drew first blood for the hosts with the wicket of opener Chandrapaul Hemraj (14), before a couple of run-outs of Kieran Powell (4) and the in-form Shai Hope (0) further derailed the chase.

Skipper Jason Holder (54 not out off 70 balls; 4X1, 6X2) raged a lone battle but with wickets falling at regular intervals, it was only a matter of time for the Indian bowlers, especially Kuldeep, whose figures of 3/42 was instrumental in cleaning up the tail.

Earlier, Rohit belted an explosive 137-ball 162, laced with 20 boundaries and four sixes, but importantly crucial from the team’s point of view, forged a 211-run third wicket stand with the other centurion Rayudu (100 off 81 balls; 4X8, 6X4) to propel the hosts to a mammoth 377/5.

Electing to bat, India raced to a brisk 71-run opening stand between Shikhar Dhawan (38) and Rohit, but were jolted once again with the second wicket of skipper Virat Kohli (16) falling in the span of 30 runs.

A rare failure after three consecutive tons, Kohli’s early departure gave Rayudu, the newly-anointed No.4 the perfect platform to not only stamp his authority but also cement his place in the build up to the ICC World Cup in 2019.

With Rohit in full flow, Rayudu took the back seat playing the perfect second fiddle and quietly watched the Mumbaikar racing to his 21st ODI ton off 98 deliveries when he chopped left-arm spinner Fabian Allen for a boundary to the point boundary.

The 33-year-old Rayudu steadily brought up his half century before matching his partner shot by shot until off-spinner Ashley Nurse got the back of the opener caught at third man by Hemraj.

The Hyderabadi right-hander continued milking the tourists and in the company of an off-colour Mahendra Singh Dhoni (23), reached his third ODI century off 80 deliveries before eventually being run out.

Towards the end, Kedar Jadhav (16 not out) and Ravindra Jadeja (7 not out) got a few lusty blows to swell the total past the 370-run mark.

Brief Scores: India 377/5 (Rohit Sharma 162, Ambati Rayudu 100; Kemar Roach 2/74) beat West Indies 153 (Jason Holder 54 not out, Keemo Paul 19; Khaleel Ahmed 3/13, Kuldeep Yadav 3/42) by 224 runs.

Khaleel reprimanded for ICC code breach

October 30, 2018 by Nasheman

India’s rookie left-arm quick Khaleel Ahmed has received an official warning and a demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel during India’s 224-run win over the West Indies in the fourth ODI in Mumbai.

“India’s Khaleel Ahmed received an official warning and one demerit point for advancing aggressively towards Marlon Samuels after dismissing the batsman during the fourth one-day international between India and the Windies on Monday,” the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement.

“The India fast bowler, who returned figures of 3/13, was found to have violated Article 2.5 of the Code, which relates to ‘using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an international match,” it added.

The incident happened in the 14th over, when the left-armer, after having Samuels caught in the slips by Rohit Sharma, advanced aggressively towards the departing batsman, which, in the view of the on-field umpires, could have provoked a reaction from the Windies player.

After the match, Ahmed admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Chris Broad and as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Ian Gould and Anil Chaudhary, third umpire Paul Wilson, as well as fourth umpire Chettithody Shamshuddin.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.
