Priya Ramani ready to face Akbar, his 97 lawyers; hearing on October 18 : #Me too

October 16, 2018 by Nasheman

Delhi’s Patiala House court has listed the matter of Union minister MJ Akbar to 18 October. He had filed a criminal defamation case in the court against journalist Priya Ramani yesterday.

“My wife faces a union minister, his 97 lawyers. It takes special courage to do that. My wife Priya [Ramani] is amongst the 14 women journalists who have named union minister MJ Akbar for a range of inappropriate workplace behaviour,” wrote her husband Samar Halarnkar, in his column.

On Monday Union Minister MJ Akbar filed a private criminal defamation complaint in a court in Delhi against journalist Priya Ramani, who has accused him of sexual misconduct around 20 years ago, alleging she “wilfully” and “maliciously” made imputations against him with the ulterior motive of maligning his reputation and political standing.
The minister of state for external affairs filed the plea in the Patiala House district courts through law firm Karanjawala & Co and the ‘vakalatnama’ names 97 lawyers, who have been authorised by Akbar to represent him.

Ramani said in a statement that she is ready to fight the defamation allegations. She alleged that “rather than engage with the serious allegations that many women have made against him, he (Akbar) seeks to silence them through intimidation and harassment”.

Priya Ramani is the torch-bearer of the Indian episode of the #MeToo campaign. She spoke out against the minister of state and then all hell broke loose. Many skeletons started tumbling from cupboards and many dark secrets came to light, related to the film industry and in media as well as other fields. Within days a movement of sorts started with each day witnessing horrific tales of sexual harassment and exploitation.

Married man commits suicide for sexual Harrsement by co-worker’s

October 16, 2018 by Nasheman

Frustrated by a woman’s never-ending demand for sex, a 38-year-old man from Parbhani district of Maharashtra ended his life. The man was identified as Sachin Mitkari and worked at a hospital along with the woman.

On Monday, the police said that the man was found hanging from the ceiling at his residence situated on Vasmat-Parbhani road on Sunday. It was the neighbours who reportedly found him hanging and called on the police. His body was then sent for autopsy by the cops.

Mitkari penned down a suicide note which was recovered from the spot by the police. The note said that the woman had been harassing him and insisting him to have a sexual relationship with her.

Despite being told by Mitkari the fact that he was married, the woman continued to chase him so that she could indulge in a sexual relationship with him.

She allegedly also used to threaten and blackmail him that she would file a criminal case against him, said a police official quoting the suicide note. A case of abetment to suicide was registered against him by the police, as per what the official told news reporting agency PTI. Further investigation into the matter is reportedly underway.

This incident clearly tells us the impact sexual harassment can have on one’s life as this news has come in amid the #MeToo movement currently going on in India wherein different women are coming up with their ordeals and accounts of harassment, especially at their places of work.

This man should have gone on to publicise the said woman’s deeds, gaining inspiration from the many Me Too survivors. This could have saved his life and it is a clear indication that men should also join the campaign by voicing out their stories of harassment on social media.

Sharif’s PML-N improves showing in Pak by-polls; Imran’s PTI front runner

October 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Pakistan’s deposed premier Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N recovered some ground in the by-elections by eating up the votes of prime minister Imran Khan’s PTI, winning four out of 11 parliamentary seats which went to the polls, according to the results on Monday.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf lost its two seats vacated be Prime Minister Khan. His seat in Lahore was won by former premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi of the Pakistan Muslims League-Nawaz (PML-N) and in Bannu by of Zahid Akram Durrani of the Muttahida Majlis Aml party.

The outcome of the by-election will not impact the federal or provincial government but help reinvigorate the opposition parties.

Polling for 11 National Assembly — the lower house of Parliament — and 24 provincial seats saw a tough competition between the ruling PTI led by Khan and the main opposition PML-N.

The PML-N and the PTI won four seats each of the National Assembly whereas Pakistan Muslims League-Quadi won two seats and Muttahida Majlis Amal one seat, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) said.

The PTI won 11 seats of the provincial assemblies while the PML-N won seven. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), led by former president Asif Ali Zardari, and Awami National Party won two each and independent candidates grab two seats.

The PML-N won six out of 11 contested seats in Punjab while its arch-rival PTI won five. The PML-N also won a provincial assembly seat in Khyber-Pakhtukhwa, which is the stronghold of the PTI.

The PML-N won several seats vacated by the PTI candidates during July 25 general elections including at least two seats of the National Assembly.

According to the ECP, 9.28 million voters were eligible to vote. For the first time, overseas Pakistanis also participated in the elections though a special online portal designed by the ECP.

Thousands of army soldiers, police and paramilitary Rangers and Frontier Corps were deployed to provide security at 7,489 polling stations. The ECP had designated as many as 1,727 polling stations as highly sensitive where extra troops were deployed and security cameras installed.

Most of the seats which went to the polls were vacated by those candidates who had won on more than one seat during the July 25 general elections. Prime Minister Khan had won five seats and vacated four which were also up for grabs.

Heavy rainfall expected in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi on Thursday and Friday

October 15, 2018 by Nasheman

The Indian Meteorological Department on Monday said that heavy rainfall is expected in coastal Karnataka on Thursday and Friday. A bulletin said that heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places over Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, and over 65 mm rainfall is expected on both days.

Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Udupi has been already receiving more than normal rainfall. According to Karnataka State Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) data as of October 15, Dakshina Kannada has received 77% excess rainfall in the last 7 days, while Udupi has received 9% more in the same duration. However, Uttara Kannada faced a deficit of 65% over the last week.

Rainfall is also expected in Bengaluru and parts of south interior Karnataka, Malnad (central Karnataka) and some parts of north interior Karnataka.

Sunil M Gavaskar, a meteorologist at the KSNDMC, said, “We are expecting widespread moderate rain and isolated heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm activity for the next 3-4 days in coastal Karnataka. Malnad region will also have isolated places of heavy rainfall. Due to the trough over Tamil Nadu and adjacent areas and cyclonic circulation in north Karnataka, we are also expecting some rainfall in south interior Karnataka, and isolated places in north interior Karnataka region also.”

The districts which are likely to receive rainfall include Bagalkot, Belagavi, Ballari, Vijayapura, Chamarajanagara, Chikkaballapura, Chikkamagaluru, Chitradurga, Devanagari, Dharwad, Gadag, Hassan, Haveri, Kodagu, Koppal, Mandya, Mysore, Raichur, Ramanagara, Shimoga and Tumkur.

In Kodagu, people are still reeling under the effects of floods in August, with 674 people still in relief camps. A large part of the state is suffering from acute deficient rainfall.

Srinivas Reddy, Managing Director of KSNDMC, said, “Out of 176 taluks, 45 taluks in Malnad and coastal belt are flood affected, while 86 talus we have declared as drought affected. We are also looking at declaring another 14 taluks as drought affected. So only the remaining 25 odd taluks we can say has got normal rainfall.”

The scant rainfall in these areas has largely affected agriculture. Around 9 lakh hectares of targeted sown land went unsown during the Kharif season.

“Even in the 65 lakh hectares of land that has been sown, we are experiencing crop loss in around 20 lakh hectares. This is not the final picture. We are taking further detailed surveys and further crop loss is expected,” he added.

The only bright side is that water levels of major reservoirs which are at a much higher level when compared to this time last year, with decreasing trends in groundwater levels and minor irrigation tanks.

India U-18 men’s, women’s Hockey team bag silver at Youth Olympics

October 15, 2018 by Nasheman

The Indian Under-18 men’s and womens Hockey team finished their 2018 Youth Olympic Games campaign with silver medals.

While the women suffered a heart-breaking 1-3 loss against hosts Argentina, the men were handed a 2-4 loss by Malaysia in their respective final of the hockey 5s competition on Sunday night.

In the women’s affair, India’s Mumtaz Khan (1′) opened the scoring in the match after just 49 seconds, but the hosts scored thrice through Gianella Palet (7′), Sofia Ramallo (9′) and Brisa Bruggesser (12′) to secure the Gold Medal.

Indian women started the first period well as they attacked the hosts right from the opening whistle, and were rewarded after just 49 seconds as in-form forward Mumtaz scored to give her team a crucial lead.

However, Argentina put the pressure on their opponents to find the equalizer in front of their home crowd and were successful in their efforts as Gianella Palet (7′) and Sofia Ramallo (9′) scored to turn the match around and help their side to a 2-1 lead at half-time.

The second period saw Argentina keep most of the possession, not allowing the Indian team to find space or create chances. It was Argentina’s Brisa Bruggesser who had the first real chance of the second period in the 12th minute, and the Midfielder made sure that she hit the target, giving her team a solid 3-1 lead.

Argentina, backed by their crowd, made sure that they managed the game well, as they kept possession and saw themselves through to the final whistle to register a historic Gold Medal victory.

Coming to the men’s contest, India captain Vivek Sagar Prasad (3′, 6′) scored twice within the first six minutes of the match to give India a 2-1 lead, but the Malaysians struck thrice in the second period through Akhimullah Anuar (14′, 19′) and Arif Ishak (17′) to secure the victory, after Firadus Rosdi (5′) had equalized for them in the first period.

Both the teams started the match well but it was India who struck first through Vivek in the 3rd minute. However, Malaysia were not behind for too long as Firadus Rosdi threatened the Indians in the 5th minute, and struck the equalizer in his second attempt to make the scores 1-1.

The Indian skipper looked in prime form as he forced a save from the Malaysian Goalkeeper Shahrul Saupi in the 6th minute and then managed to beat the Malaysian in the same minute to give India the lead again.

The second period, however, turned out to be a difficult one for the Indian team as they had to face constant pressure from the Malaysians. After having denied Malaysia of levelling the scores, Indian goalkeeper Prashant Chauhan was beaten for the second time in the match in the 14th minute as Akhimullah Anuar scored past him to make the scores 2-2.

Malaysia took the lead on the counter in the 17th minute through Arif Ishak. Having taken a 3-2 lead, it was the Malaysian team who now started to dominate the proceedings, and it was Akhimullah Anuar who popped up again in the 19th minute to seal the Gold Medal win for his team.

Speaking on the occasion R. A. Janab averred, “I as a State President of our newly launched party “Secular Democratic Congress” wish to point out that the current political parties are misusing their power for example one of the party is scaring the wits out of the minority community to garner votes since the last 7 decades while the other parties are hoodwinking the voters in the name of the cast & the religion. But we are going to appeal to the voters to cast their votes in the name of secularism. And even if 5 MP’s from our party are elected from our party from all over India we can assure the masses that we will definitely bring in a lot of changes that is the main motive of our party.”

PP John explained about the main aim of the party by stating that, “We needed a national platform for people who support for peace, communal harmony & non – violence. We are going to be the voice of such people to solve their grievances. We want people to come forward to strengthen the party not with the expectations of what the party can do for them but with the resolution of what they can do for the party in the initial stage.”
