SC sends 3 Amrapali directors in police custody

October 10, 2018 by Nasheman

The Supreme Court on Tuesday sent in police custody three Directors of the Amrapali Group till they handed over all documents related to their 46 companies to forensic auditors.

The court said that in case the three directors — Anil Kumar Sharma, Shiv Priya and Ajay Kumar — “failed to hand over the documents as ordered, they shall remain in police custody till such time the documents are handed over.”

A bench of Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Uday Umesh Lalit observed that there was blatant and deliberate violation and non-compliance of its directions to the construction company’s Directors to submit the said documents.

The court also issued a contempt notice to the three, asking them to explain as to why they did not comply with the court’s earlier orders.

It ordered that these three and other company Directors to surrender their passports. Nominee Directors will not be covered by this direction, the court clarified.

The court also said that none of the statutory auditors and Directors shall leave the country.

Asking the police to seize all the documents, the court said: “It is not only deliberate non- compliance with court order but also efforts are being made to fritter away the documents in utter violation of court order.”

The court directed that documents not handed over as per the October 4, 2018 order of the Debt Recovery Tribunal too will be handed over to police.

The court took a dim view of the conduct of the Directors, after one of the forensic auditors said that all that the company had furnished till now were documents relating to only six of the 46 companies.

“Why this hide and seek and violation of compliance with our order? Whatever they (forensic auditors) want, it should be handed over by today,” Justice Mishra said.

The documents supplied to the forensic auditors include two internal audit reports of the real estate group pertaining to a period from 2008 to 2015, but nothing from 2015 until 2018.

Directing the Delhi Police to take assistance of Noida police and seize all necessary documents, Justice Mishra said: “If you fail to give any documents, you will not come out of this (custody).

“If they want to live in dignity, then they (Directors) should hand over all the documents immediatelym,” Justice Mishra added.

The court warned the three Directors: “You are in great difficulty, if you don’t comply. We are in action. This will not be tolerated even for an hour. You don’t play with the court.”

The court reminded the Amrapali Directors that they were in the wrong as far as principles of law and administration were concerned as “you have not prepared the accounts from 2015 till 2018.

The court posted the matter for October 24.

Pro Kabaddi: Telugu Titans hand Tamil Thalaivas second straight defeat

October 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Tamil Thalaivas succumbed to their second successive defeat in a row as they lost to Telugu Titans 28-33 on the third day of the Pro Kabaddi tournament at the packed Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium here on Tuesday.

Playing their first game of the sixth season, Telugu Titans rode on star raider Rahul Chaudhuri’s nine raid points and Iranian Mohsen Maghsoudlou’s all round effort (three raid points, four tackle points) to down Tamil Thalaivas.

Chaudhari scored nine points and made crucial raids for the Titans. Ajay Thakur (9 raid points) and Amit Hooda (5 tackle points) were the top players for TamilThalaivas but their effort wasn’t enough.

The home team, looking to take inspiration from their remarkable back against U.P.Yoddha last night where they fought back from 7-27 to lose 32-37, raced to a two-point lead riding Athul MS’s successful raid and Titans’ star raider Chaudhari being sent out of the mat in his first attempt.

Tamil Thalaivas led till 8-7 in front of a vociferous home crowd who were lapping up the south Indian derby.

But from there on, they lost ground as the Titans fashioned a late all out to take a healthy 16-9 lead and go into the break 17-11.

Chaudhuri, who stepped down from his captaincy ahead of this season to hand over the reins to young all-rounder Vishal Bharadwaj, started the second half by getting the back of Manjeet Chhillar in the first raid to further extend Titans’ lead.

Manjeet Chhillar was a rock at the back for Tamil Thalaivas as they mounted a comeback in the second half.

After 25 minutes, Telugu Titans led 21-16 and the match hung in balance.

The fatigue was showing on Tamil Thalaivas as they played their third match in three days.
Telugu Titans were the fitter team with their defence and raiders looking sharper.

It was a Titans Tuesday Tho for Chaudhari’s team as they maintained their composure in the last few minutes of the match and didn’t give Thalaivas a chance to make a comeback.

Amit Hooda attained a high five in the last minute of the match but it wasna¿t enough. Tamil Thalaivas made critical errors throughout the match and crashed to 28-33 defeat.

Lockheed hosts F-16 suppliers’ meet in Bengaluru

October 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Lockheed Martin is hosting a conference in this tech hub for industry suppliers on its flagship fighter F-16 with Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL), said the American aerospace major on Tuesday.

“The four-day meet since Monday is discussing opportunities for the suppliers and prospective Indian partners on the F-16 programme, which has the world’s largest fighter aircraft ecosystem,” said Lockheed in a statement here.

The all-weather single-engine F-16 supersonic multirole fighter, developed originally for the US Air Force by General Dynamics, is in use by air forces in 25 countries the world over.

“The fighter jet offers opportunities for Indian firms and their suppliers’ new business with us, TASL and other industry leaders,” said Lockheed’s strategic and business development Vice-President Vivek Lall in a statement here.

If the fighter is produced in India, it offers the Indian aerospace industry a whopping $165-bilion jet aircraft sustainment market, claimed Lall.

“The conference has provided a platform for Indian industry players to explore opportunities with global suppliers in the F-16 manufacturing ecosystem.

Globally, F-16 industry leading partners include GE, Terma, Honeywell, Fokker, Israeli Aerospace Industries, Elbit, UTC, Terma, Eaton, Moog and Parker.

“The potential F-16 India Project, as a single source globally, will be strategic to build new capabilities in the local defence production. We look forward to participating in the selection process for the fighter programme of the Indian Air Force (IAF),” said Tata Advanced Systems Chief Executive Sukharan Singh at the conference.

As part of its commitment to India, Lockheed has partnered with TASL to produce the fighter’s (F-16) wings at the latter’s aerospace facility in Hyderabad.

“We have offered to produce F-16s in India for the IAF and export customers if the government selects the fighter’s Block 70 version for IAF and agrees to our partnership proposal,” reiterated Lall.

Lockheed’s initiative positions TASL to become the provider of wings for all future customers.

The F-16 block 70 version features advanced avionics, a proven Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, a modernised cockpit, advanced weapons, conformal fuel tanks, an automatic ground collision avoidance system, an advanced engine and extended service life of 12,000 hours.

Though Lockheed sold a record 4,604 F-16s to 28 customers the worldwide over the years, about 3,000 of them are in operation with 25 air forces.

As a Tata Sons subsidiary, TASL provides integrated solutions for aerospace, defence and homeland security.

Avoid fried food, smoking, alcohol to prevent acidity

October 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Amidst the hectic schedule of day-to-day life, we often neglect common digestive problems such as acidity. Considering these digestive problems to be minor, we either ignore or tend to treat them by ourselves.

Acidity can cause heartburn — a burning sensation in the chest, stomach and throat. However, frequent episodes of heartburn (two or more times a week) may be associated with other severe problems like Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), which calls for medical intervention.

A sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits such as irregular meals, skipping meals and consuming spicy, oily and fast-food can cause acidity. Along with this, obesity, stress, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and prolonged use of certain medications such as pain killers or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, can lead to other digestive ailments.

Dr. Rajesh Kumawat, Head – Medical Services & Clinical Development, The Himalaya Drug Company, recommends a few modifications in our daily habits that help in managing acidity.

– Drink adequate water throughout the day, preferably 8-9 glasses.

– Reduce the intake of fried, fatty, spicy, and junk food.

– Avoid alcoholic, carbonated, and caffeinated drinks.

– Consume meals at regular intervals; avoid long gaps between meals.

– Include fresh green salad in your diet (consume salad 15 minutes before your meal).

– Consume fresh fruits; however, avoid consumption of acidity-causing citrus fruits (such as oranges and lemons).

– Consume food two to three hours before going to bed.

– Exercise/light physical activity, yoga, meditate on a daily basis.

– Review your medicines (used for other ailments) regularly with your physician.

– Antacids with natural ingredients such as the ones listed below can also be consumed to get relief from acidity.

Indian gooseberry, a herb also known as amalaki or amla, is an antioxidant. It is effective in reducing the acid and normalising mucin (that protects the internal layer of the stomach) content in the stomach and helps in healing stomach ulcers.

Cowrie shell ash or varatika is well-known for its antacid and digestive properties. It is useful for symptomatic relief from gastritis, hyperacidity, heartburn and indigestion. Healthy eating habits and consuming antacids with natural ingredients can help keep acidity and other digestive problems at bay.

In case of frequent and severe acidity, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

More toilets = more skilled ‘girlforce’ (October 11 is International Day of the Girl Child)

October 10, 2018 by Nasheman

This International Girl Child Day, let us look at how a simple step can make a big difference in empowering girls to achieve their dreams.

“I advised my sister not to leave school because I’ve already made that mistake,” says Ruby with her head bowed and her steady yet moist eyes fixed on the floor. The 20-year-old from a slum in Agra dropped out of school in the third grade as there were no toilets.

Like other children, she was forced to defecate behind the school building in the open or she had to walk back home just to use the toilet. Most girls didn’t feel safe defecating in the open area due to the fear of being watched. They preferred to walk back to their respective houses, about a kilometre away, to use the toilets and return to school. But the walk was risky, due to violent incidences on the lonely streets.

Ruby’s younger sister, 15-year-old Nisha, an ambitious girl who aspires to be a doctor, also had a similar experience but luckily not for too long.

As per statistics released by the Ministry of Human Resource Department in 2016, the number of dropouts amongst girls in upper-primary and secondary classes increased by almost 70 per cent as compared to the dropouts in primary classes. Even the enrollment of girls to every hundred boys decreased from 95 to 85 from upper primary to higher secondary classes.

A World Bank report published in July 2018 said that the lack of educational opportunities and barriers in completing 12 years of schooling for girls is costing countries anywhere between $15 trillion and $30 trillion dollars. It also pointed out that nine in ten girls complete their primary education, but only three in four complete their lower secondary education across the world.

According to the study, the first among six primary reasons for this is that “schools are not equipped with necessary infrastructure” for girls to continue their education. If they have to continue in schools equipped with good resources, the cost is well beyond their means.

Nisha’s and Ruby’s struggle and fears were real and it is still a reality for thousands of girls between ages 10 to 17, living in poor and vulnerable conditions. Yet, Nisha’s story illustrates the fact that change is possible.

Four years ago, in 2013, World Vision India, through the “Support My School” campaign, built separate toilets for girls and boys in Nisha’s school.

“Now I don’t need to go home during school hours. Earlier, I missed school regularly due to lack of a toilet in the premises. I used to score less and felt extremely bad,” she says.

It was during those initial years until 2013 that Nisha used to repeatedly miss school due to lack of a sanitation facility. But Ruby’s words of wisdom and the relentless support of her father, a traditional shoemaker, and mother, a homemaker, inspired the younger daughter of the family to not to give up on school.

“We used to get scared about Nisha coming home alone repeatedly, especially because there are several drunken men in this area. But now that the problem is solved, we are at peace,” says 40-year-old Pushpa, Nisha’s mother.

Nisha now has the means to achieve her dreams. A classroom where she can be educated and develop her knowledge and skills in a safe and hygienic environment. She has her space to participate and engage in co-curricular activities and friends with whom she can learn, share and grow. And she has all of this because of one small change — an accessible toilet in her school.

“Since the installation of toilets, girls have outnumbered boys present in some of our classrooms,” says Rakhi, a teacher from the school.

Like Nisha, several other girl students have been restored their right to education — a right that was taken away due to lack of child-friendly spaces for girls.

“The stability in the attendance of girls, that wasn’t present earlier, is now visible,” says Snehalatha, Nisha’s class teacher. “Before the toilets were built, nearly 40 per cent of female students dropped out of school. Now there are hardly any dropouts,” she adds.

The World Bank reports highlights that “globally, women with secondary education earn twice as much as those with only primary education”.

To build a skilled workforce of girls, it is important that we help them complete secondary education — and a toilet in school is all we need to make the much-needed difference.

Maoist terror funding: NIA raids 15 places in Jharkhand, Bengal

October 10, 2018 by Nasheman

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday searched 15 locations in Jharkhand and West Bengal in connection with a probe into the role of some companies allegedly involved in funding of a Maoist outfit Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC), said the agency.

Fifteen teams of the NIA were assisted by the state police forces during the raids it conducted at the residences and offices of managers of different companies in Ranchi, Hazaribagh and Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, and Durgapur in West Bengal.

The companies are associated with purchase and transport of coal in Amrapali and Magadh coalfields in Jharkhand and allegedly involved in providing funds to TPC, an NIA statement said.

The anti-terror agency has also seized huge incriminating materials and documents pertaining to payments made to Amrapali and Magadh area committees, bank account details and fixed deposits, deduction of levy amount, computers, hard discs, mobiles containing accounts of companies, and diaries containing entries of money paid to TPC and Peoples Liberation Front of India during the raids.

The NIA has also seized cash equivalent to Rs 68 lakh, besides 10,000 Singapore dollar and 1,300 USD, besides Rs 86,000 demonetized currency.

The NIA took over the case from Jharkhand Police and registered an FIR on February 16 this year following Home Ministry’s order. The Jharkhand Police had registered an FIR in the case in January 11, 2016.

Was asked to visit Vairamuthu in hotel, says singer Chinmayi

October 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Popular singer Chinmayi Sripaada has backed accusations of sexual harassment against veteran Tamil lyricist-poet Vairamuthu by alleging that she was asked to “cooperate” and visit him in a hotel but she refused.

After endorsing allegations of sexual harassment against Vairamuthu by several others on Twitter in the wake of the #MeToo movement, Chinmayi shared her own story.

In a series of tweets, Chinmayi recalled an incident that a concert organiser asked her to “cooperate” and visit Vairamuthu in his hotel room. She said this happened in 2005 or 2006.

“‘Veezhamattom’. An album for Sri Lankan Tamils that I had sung in had Manikka Vinayagam sir. I don’t remember if it was a book or an album release or both now. The performances and launch happened in Switzerland in Bern/Zurich maybe,” she tweeted.

“Everyone left. Only my mother and I were asked to stay back. The organiser (I don’t remember his name) asked me to visit Vairamuthu sir in a hotel.”

Chinmayi said she was asked to “cooperate” but she refused.

“We demanded to be sent back to India. He said ‘You won’t have a career!’ My mother and I both put our foot down. ‘Career vendam, mannum vendam (I don’t need a career, I need self-esteem)’. Demanded an earlier flight to India and came back.”

Recalling another incident, which she said happened three or four years ago, Chinmayi alleged that Vairamuthu threatened to make false claims when she turned down his request to sing at an event.

“He had a book release function and asked me to sing ‘Tamizh Thaai vaazhthu’. I said I would be unable to. He in turn responded I’ll tell (a politician) you spoke ill of him on stage, yelled at me. (I) kept the phone down (and) bawled,” wrote Chinmayi.

She added that her work place had been mostly clean, except for some bad apples.

“In 17 years, not one man in the industry across languages Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Marathi has misbehaved.”

She alleged that the staff of Vairamuthu’s office was well aware of his behaviour. “His close confidants know. They are also his enablers,” she said.

Thakur then boosted India’s gold count by winning the T35 100m final race in 14.02 seconds. Athletes in T35 class have coordination impairments.

India also bagged three silver medals through Surender Aneesh Kumar (men’s F43/44,F62/64 discus), Ram Pal (men’s T45/46/47 high jump), Virender (men’s F56/57 shot put).

Nikki Haley, first Indian-American on US cabinet, resigns

October 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Nikki Haley, the first Indian-American to serve on the United States cabinet and the highest profile woman and non-white in the current administration, has resigned her position as the Permanent Representative to the UN, she and President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday.

In the surprise announcement, she said she will leave at the end of the year.

She said that she did not know as yet what she will be doing next, but ruled out a run for president in 2020 saying she would campaign for Trump.

After eight years of public service — two as a governor and two as UN ambassador – she said that she wanted a change after the stressful tenures and that government officials should limit their terms in office so that there are new people coming in.

Trump praised her for her role at the UN saying that she was respected by leaders and diplomats at the UN and that the US is more respected.

He called her a “special friend” and said he hoped to see her back in some capacity in the administration or politics.

The daughter of Sikh immigrants from Amritsar district, Haley had a meteoric rise in Republican politics and was the megaphone of President Donald Trump’s aggressive global policy at the UN often using harsh rhetoric at opponents.

She was the first woman and non-white to be elected governor of South Carolina before she was appointed the UN ambassador — a cabinet post in the US.

Haley is very popular among Republicans. But she was despised by Democrats — especially Indian Americans — who hold that non-white persons should not be in the Republican Party and hold a high government office in Republican Administration.

The resignation of the highest profile woman in Trump’s cabinet less than a month before the mid-term elections roils the political situation just after widespread protests by women’s groups and polarisation over the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of sexual harassment, to the Supreme Court.

Her main achievement was getting China and Russia to stringently adhere to Security Council sanctions on North Korea, which ultimately led to its Kim Jong Un agreeing to negotiate denuclearisation with the US.

Trump praised her role on North Korea, which led to his diplomatic coup.

She also backed the moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, which led to the virtual isolation of Washington at the UN, with even allies abandoning it.

She also backed cutting US aid to the UN agency for Palestinians.

In addition, she was behind the US pulling out of the UN Human Rights Council because, she said, it included several human rights violators.

Despite promoting the Trump’s policies, she also had differences with him, pursuing a far more aggressive policy towards Russia than Trump does.

While Rex Tillerson was the Secretary of State, she had a higher profile, which dimmed somewhat after Michael Pompeo took the job and assumed a more public role.

She was also hemmed in by National Security Adviser John Bolton, a former US Permanent Representative, with his own foreign policy agenda that was sometimes at odd with Pompeo on North Korea and Russia.

Haley had been a critic of Trump during the campaign for Republican Party nomination for president in 2016 and supported Marco Rubio. But after Trump won the nomination, she supported for him.

She acknowledged that she had differences with Trump while at the UN but could air her views with him.

In an op-ed in The Washington Post, she wrote, “I don’t agree with the president on everything. When there is disagreement, there is a right way and a wrong way to address it. I pick up the phone and call him or meet with him in person.”

After her departure, among the high-ranking Trump administration officials are Ajit Pai, the Federal Communications Commission Chairperson, and Seema Verma, the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Neither are at cabinet level.

Determined Indian hockey colts beat Japan 1-0

October 10, 2018 by Nasheman

The Indian junior mens hockey team registered their third successive victory at the 8th Sultan of Johor Cup 2018 as they beat Japan 1-0 in a closely-fought match here on Tuesday.

The rain-affected India-Japan match which was stopped for a few minutes during the first quarter was intensely fought between the two teams.

With Japan on the rise with both their senior and junior teams making good progress in the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympics, the India colts had their task cut out.

Their attack was often challenged with good, disciplined defence structure that Japan adopted during the entire duration of play. Though India made a few chances in the opening quarter with the team winning a PC, it was denied by a good Japanese defence.

With the second quarter too ending in a stalemate with both teams at 0-0, the third quarter saw India up their attack.

While two PCs were awarded to India after a Japanese infringement, it was in the second attempt that skipper Mandeep Mor converted a well-executed PC in the 42nd minute.

Leading by only a goal, India put all their might into defence with goalkeeper Pankaj Rajak making some excellent saves to keep his team in the lead.

India overcame a close shave when Japan won a PC with minutes left for the final hooter, however, the chance was missed and India held their nerves to seal the match.

Earlier in the tournament, India had won 2-1 against Malaysia and 7-1 against New Zealand.

The Indian colts will next take on defending champions Australia in their fourth match on Wednesday.
