Migrant workers critical for economic growth: Rahul

October 9, 2018 by Nasheman

Attributing the violent attacks on migrant workers in Gujarat to frustration among unemployed youth, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the migrant workforce is “critical” for economic growth and must be curbed immediately.

“Across Gujarat, poor economic policies, demonetisation and poorly executed GST (Goods and Services Tax) have devastated industry resulting in the shutting down of factories and industrial units, leading to massive unemployment,” the Congress chief said in a Facebook post.

He said that amongst the “youth” there was “growing frustration and anger” with the government’s inability to create jobs.

“This anger and frustration is being manifested in violent attacks on migrants, across the state of Gujarat,” he added.

“The migrant workforce is critical to our economic growth. Attacks on them create an environment of fear and insecurity that is not good for business and our economy.”

Gandhi urged the state government to act “decisively”, “and do all it can to restore peace and ensure safety of every Indian”.

His remarks came amid the incidents of attacks on migrant labourers from north India spurred by rape of a 14-month-old girl in a village near Himmatnagar town, around 100 km from Ahmedabad.

After the rape of the toddler, there were widespread attacks on migrant labourer residents, especially from north India, believing that some from the community were responsible for the ghastly crime.

The police had arrested a labourer originally from Bihar, Ravindra Sahu, for the crime. Sahu was working in a ceramic factory.

Gujarat Police have filed 35 complaints and detained around 450 persons for attacking the migrant community residing in the state.

CPEC focus must be on job creation, agriculture: Imran Khan

October 9, 2018 by Nasheman

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has decided to shift the focus of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) from motorways to agriculture, job creation and foreign investment, a media report said on Tuesday.

The decision was taken on Monday in a meeting presided over by Khan.

“Earlier, the CPEC was only aimed at construction of motorways and highways, but now the Prime Minister decided that it will be used to support the agriculture sector, create more jobs and attract other foreign nations like Saudi Arabia to invest in the country,” Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry told Dawn news.

He said Khan’s proposed visit to China in the first week of November was also discussed during the meeting.

“Arrangements are being made for the visit and its date is yet to be finalised,” Chaudhry said.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister said strengthening the strategic cooperative partnership with China was the cornerstone of Pakistan’s foreign policy and early implementation of the CPEC projects would help realise the true potential of Pakistan-China economic relations not only for the two countries but for the entire region.

Khan said that CPEC was a great opportunity to learn from the Chinese experience, especially in the social, agricultural and other sectors.

He said that agricultural output of the country, considered as the backbone of economy, could be enhanced manifold by learning from Chinese expertise and employing latest technologies and efficient methods.

Prime Minister Khan stressed the need for focusing on early establishment of special economic zones in various parts of the country along the CPEC which would help the local industry grow through industrialisation and would also create huge employment opportunities for youths.

He said the CPEC under Belt and Road Initiative of President Xi Jinping also offered opportunities to other countries to invest in CPEC projects and reap benefits in various sectors.

Last year China had temporarily suspended funding of road projects related to the CPEC till what the Chinese authorities said “new guidelines” to be issued from Beijing, Dawn news reported.

It is expected that Khan will raise the issue during his meetings with the Chinese leadership.

Vinta Nanda accuses Alok Nath of rape, CINTAA to send him notice

October 9, 2018 by Nasheman

Vinta Nanda, a veteran writer-producer of the avant-garde 1990s’ show “Tara” fame, has accused actor Alok Nath — known for his “sanskaari” on-screen image — of sexually violating her almost two decades ago. The Cine & TV Artists Association (CINTAA) has decided to send him a show-cause notice.

“I have waited for this moment to come for 19 years,” Nanda wrote in a long, heart-wrenching Facebook post, referring to the “predator in question” as “the actor par excellence who is known as the most ‘sanskaari’ (cultured) person in the film and television industry”.

Her suggestive remarks like “sanskaari” and that the person concerned was the “lead actor” and a “television star of that decade” were good enough to make out that Nanda was indeed pointing the finger at Alok.

Later, confirming the same to IANS via SMS, Nanda said: “It is Alok Nath. I thought saying ‘sanskaari’ would do the needful.”

CINTAA General Secretary Sushant Singh has said a show-cause notice will be sent to Alok. He urged Nanda to file a complaint against “this vile creature”, and added: “We extend you full support”.

Alok is known for his roles as a stereotypical Indian father, personifying religious traditions and moral values in films and TV shows.

It is the escalating voices against sexual harassment across the world as part of the #MeToo wave that gave Nanda the courage to pen down the experiences which had left her “shattered”.

“He was an alcoholic, shameless and obnoxious but he was also the television star of that decade, so not only was he forgiven for all his bad behaviour, many of the guys would also egg him on to be his worst,” Nanda wrote, adding that he even harassed the show’s lead actress who was not interested in him.

Sharing the “worst” that happened, Nanda recounted the incidents that followed after she left a party at Alok’s house at 2 a.m. She says her drinks were mixed.

“I started to walk home on the empty streets… Midway I was accosted by this man who was driving his own car and he asked me to sit in it and said he would drop me home. I trusted him and sat in his car.

“I have faint memory after that. I can remember more liquor being poured into my mouth and I remember being violated endlessly. When I woke up the next afternoon, I was in pain. I hadn’t just been raped, I was taken to my own house and had been brutalised.

“I couldn’t get up for my bed. I told some of my friends but everybody advised me to forget about it and move on.”

Later, she got a job to write and direct a series for Plus Channel, and again her paths crossed with Alok.

“The man found his way through the casting route and became one of the lead actors on the show. He created an environment in which I was made to feel threatened, so I asked the producers to release me from directing the series because I didn’t want to be around where he was.

“I continued to write the show.”

The “most difficult part” and the “main reason” why Nanda took so long to come out with the truth was because while she was working on this new series, she says, “he asked me to come to his house again and I went to allow him to violate me”.

“I needed the job and didn’t want to leave it as I needed the money. It was after this that I quit.”

Nanda has urged people “who have suffered at the hands of predators, to come out and say it aloud”.

“Don’t hold yourselves back. This is a moment for change, so your silence will only hold barriers to its evolution. Speak out. Shout out from the top of the roof.”

Sony Hits Back At Tata Sky Over Removal Of Channels

Hitting back at direct to home (DTH) operator Tata Sky, broadcaster Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has condemned the removal of its channels by the DTH operator. Tata Sky removed 27 channels of SPNI & TV Today Network from 1st Oct, 2018. Sony is the official distributor TV Today Network channels. The removal of channels was preceded by a disconnection notice issued by Tata Sky against SPNI & TV Today Network on 16th Sept, 2018. The DTH operator’s notice was in response to the one issued by SPNI & TV Today Network. Both the disconnection notices were issued due to non-renewal of agreement. Sony has alleged that Tata Sky has unilaterally dropped the channels even though the rates of the channels have remained unchanged. “It is unfortunate that Tata Sky has unilaterally chosen to drop 22 SPN channels from its subscription, even though SPN has not increased the rates of its channels,” the broadcaster said in a statement. “By unilaterally dropping the channels, Tata Sky is depriving its viewers of the opportunity to watch world-class entertainment & live sporting action. Tata Sky is not acting in consumer interest. Tata Sky has claimed that the negotiations with Sony broke down since the demand by the broadcaster would have forced it to hike the price of its pack. “Tata Sky has dropped 27 channels & services from its platform from 1st Oct. 2018. Commercial negotiations with broadcasters broke down because what they were seeking would have forced us to hike our prices. Hence, we have had to drop a few channels while keeping the popular ones on.” the DTH operator has stated.

Twinkle Khanna Joins Save The Children As Artist Ambassador

Twinkle Khanna, has joined Save the Children as the Artist Ambassador to promote adolescent health & right to menstrual hygiene. Twinkle Khanna exults, “Even today, one half of the population in our country continues to struggle for their fair share. Women & girls are often denied access to rights simply because they are born girls. And this discrimination begins right from the womb & the cycle continues. And they continue to lose out on the most basic of the rights, whether we talk of health, education and on it goes. Access to basic health & hygiene should not be a matter of chance but choice & rights. Taboos & lack of awareness around something as natural as menstruation push more than 50% of women to most unhygienic practices. We need to push boundaries, and we need to have more open, honest conversations around menstruation to begin with. I, Twinkle Khanna, am excited to join Save the Children as their artist ambassador to champion the cause of adolescent health & menstrual hygiene”. Save the Children priorities include social behavior change communication to overcome the social taboos, misconceptions & misbelieves on menstrual hygiene, empowerment of adolescent girls to take appropriate decisions on management of menstruation, improving the targeting of influencers, improving the reach & quality of low-cost pads, improving access to sanitation (toilets) at schools & in communities, inculcating hygiene & sanitation behaviors & practices for better management of menstruation in schools & communities.

‘Sajjan Singh Rangroot’ To Be Dubbed In Russian Language

Alex Reece, who played the main villain in the Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Sajjan Singh Rangroot this year, has predicted that the next James Bond villain could be based on Russian president Vladimir Putin. In the casting call for Bond 25, the casting execs are reported to have advertised that they are looking for a Russian male, who needs to be “charismatic, powerful, innovative, cold & vindictive” & a female character described as “intelligent, brave, fierce & charming.” “I don’t know about the female character, but the description of the male one sure sounds like a certain Russian president to me,” says Alex with a wicked smile. The British actor who has worked in Hollywood flicks, is also known for his appearance in a mega-budget James Bond commercial starring Daniel Craig. Alex points out, “Many of the initial Bond movies were made during the Cold War, but since Daniel Craig took over, that Russian element has been missing.””Now with allegations about Russian interference in American elections, Russia is back in the picture. Having a negative character with comparisons to Putin or his KGB secret service past, can work new wonders for the Bond series,” analyses the Rangroot villain. Meanwhile, Alex is himself going to have a Russian connection soon. His villainy act in Sajjan Singh Rangroot is heading to Russia, with the film’s dubbed version all set to release there in the last week of Oct, 2018.

What a woman! She battled personal odds to become crusader against child marriages

October 8, 2018 by Nasheman

Kriti Bharti has been fighting for years against child marriages despite facing death and rape threats.

Her struggle for survival began even before she was born. Her own family members wanted to kill her in her mother’s womb after her father abandoned them. Rajasthan-based Kriti Bharti had been fighting ever since — which eventually led her to battle for those who are are let down by their families and forced to get married as children.

Born prematurely at seven months, she first fought for her own survival; then she fought her family which considered her to be a curse. And now she has been fighting for years against child marriages despite facing death and rape threats.

While Kriti’s mother decided to have her as it was too risky to go for an abortion, her personal struggles were not over as she was constantly tormented by her relatives. Owing to some medical complications, she got stuck in the womb, due to which she had serious head wounds.

“This was my first struggle — to survive in this world. Born against the will of my relatives, I had to face torture and taunts in my childhood. When my mother went out to work, I was ill-treated and mentally tortured by my relatives who said I had bad blood,” Kriti told IANS.

“Some relatives went to the extent of changing their paths to avoid seeing my face (thinking she brought ill-luck),” she recounted sadly.

While such experiences scarred her psyche, it was her mother Indu and grandparents, Nemichand and Krishna Mahnot, who supported her, becoming pillars of strength.

But the social torture crossed all limits when one of her relatives gave her slow poison when she was just 10 years old. Even as she survived, the poison paralysed her body, save her head and a hand.

“I could not sit, walk, stand or even change sides while sleeping. About 90 per cent of my body became insensitive. Despite being taken to several hospitals, nothing worked,” she said.

During this traumatic time, her mother took her to Reiki teacher Brahmanand Saraswati’s ashram in Bhilwara where several Reiki (a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing) sessions led to some improvement.

For the second time in her life, she had to again learn to walk. At 11, she was able to crawl like a toddler. Then she learnt how to sit and walk with some support. At the age of about 12, she could again stand on her own feet and started walking.

But traumatised by her childhood memories, Kriti was disenchanted from the world, gave up everything and changed her last name to Bharti, becoming the “daughter of Bharat (India)”. She learnt the Reiki art of healing while also learning Yoga practices.

After being counseled by her mother and her teacher Brahmanand Saraswati, she resumed her education and appeared for open board exams after a gap of four years and skipping six standards.

“With regular 15 to 16 hours study, I cleared my class X exams, followed by class XII and then did my graduation, post graduation and doctorate in psychology from Jai Narayan Vyas University in Jodhpur.”

After her doctorate, she set out on her mission to work for the welfare of stigmatised children and women and now has a dream to make Rajasthan child marriage-free.

After freeing many girl children from child marriages, she has become the guardian and mother of such “balika vadhus” (child brides).

In 2012, she started Saarthi trust in Jodhpur and is now a rehabilitation psychologist and managing trustee of the organisation.

“With a firm pledge to eradicate child marriages in the country, I prevented dozens of child marriages. But such marriages continued and innocent children were forced to follow traditions, thus wasting their lives,” she said.

Faced with the challenge of finding a solution, Kriti turned her attention to a legal remedy and discussed the situation with legal experts and came up with the idea of annulment of such illegal child marriages.

“Annulment of child marriage means the marriage which took place years ago is made legally null and void. After annulment, the boys and girls who tied the knot of child marriage years ago are freed from this bond,” she explained.

A victim of child marriage, Laxmi Sargara, came to Kriti seeking help and her marriage was successfully annulled — a first in the country, setting a precedent for future cases. This also brought national and international fame to Kriti and her organisation.

Not only did she find a place in several record books for the first annulment of a child marriage in the country, her campaign also found a place in the syllabus of class XI and XII of Central Board of Secondary Education.

Once infamous for the highest number of child marriages in the country, Kriti’s campaign is slowly bringing about a change in Rajasthan, especially Jodhpur, which tops the list in the country for the most number of child marriage annulments.

Kriti’s efforts have helped annul 36 child marriages so far, which took place years ago. She has also created a record of preventing thousands of child marriages, finding a place in record books like Limca Book of Records and World Records India, and Unique Book of World Records.

In 2016, her name was once again registered in World Record India, India Book of Records and Unique World Records for nullifying three child marriages in three days.

Besides working for annulment of child marriages, she also works for rehabilitation of child labourers, victims of child trafficking and child abuse. She also works for the rehabilitation of women. Till now she has rehabilitated more than 6,000 children and more than 5,500 women.

“I face many brutal attacks and threats but I continue working for the protection of girls. Being a woman, I received rape threats several times, but I stood firm,” she said.

At the international level, Pixel Project ranked her seventh in the list of role models, and her organisation Saarthi was ranked 10th in the global list.

With grit and determination, she continues to pursue her life’s goals.

Seer fasting for Ram temple in Ayodhya hospitalised

October 8, 2018 by Nasheman

A Hindu seer who was on an indefinite fast to press for early construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya has been picked up from the temple town here in Uttar Pradesh and sent to a hospital in Lucknow, police said on Monday.

“He was picked up by the police after his condition deteriorated after midnight,” an official said. Mahant Praramhans Das’ pulse rate dropped alarmingly forcing the police to intervene.

He was admitted to the Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) where doctors treating him said that his condition was critical as the ketone level in the body was very high due to prolonged fasting. He has also suffered acute dehydration.

SGPGI Director Rakesh Kapoor is supervising Das’ treatment, a doctor told IANS. He has been kept in the critical care ICU and nobody is allowed to meet him.

The seer has been on a sit-in protest for the last one week and had declared that he would not relent until assurances from the state and central government that the construction of the temple would be expedited.

On Sunday, state Industry Minister Satish Mahana had met the seer and asked him to give up his fast unto death.

He had also assured Das that he would soon arrange for a video call between him and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

There is anger against the police action and many from the seer’s community have converged at the venue of his fast. Former Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) president Praveen Togadia has reached here and is trying to appease the agitated seers.
