President, PM, Rahul remember Gandhi on his birth anniversary

October 2, 2018 by Nasheman

Launching a two-year-long celebration marking the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday shared their messages on social media.

“Tribute to Bapu on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. Gandhiji’s life was devoted to the ideals of peace, brotherhood and harmony. Today, there is an opportunity to replicate our allegiance and resolve towards these ideals. Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings are relevant to the whole of humanity,” Kovind tweeted early in the day.

Sharing his op-ed to national dailies on the occasion, the Prime Minister said: “From today we are entering Pujya Bapu’s 150th anniversary year. It is a great opportunity for all of us to fulfill their dreams. #Gandhi150.”

In his op-ed he said: “He (the Mahatma) remains a shining beacon of hope for millions of people across the world who seek a life of equality, dignity, inclusion and empowerment. The impact he left on human society has few parallels…

“Let us think about how our actions can contribute to a cleaner and greener environment for the future generations. Almost eight decades ago, when the threats of pollution were not as much, Gandhiji took to cycling…

Modi also tweeted on the “insightful op-ed” by Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on “how India and Singapore are united in the pursuit of building a cleaner and better tomorrow for the coming generations”.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi said truth and non-violence — the two beacons of Mahatma Gandhi’s life — that he lived and died for, are India’s foundation and true patriots must protect them.

“Gandhiji, is not an immobile statue, he is a living set of ideas and values flowing through India. Truth and non-violence, which he lived for and was killed for are the foundation of our country. True patriots must protect them,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

2 students immolate self over love affair

October 2, 2018 by Nasheman

Inspired by a Telugu film, two Class 10 students committed self-immolation over fear of failure in love affair in Telangana’s Jagtiyal town, police said on Monday.

Contrary to initial reports that they allegedly died in a clash over an affair with the same girl, the investigations revealed that they took the extreme step after their parents chided them for continuously chatting with girls.

Both the students, aged 16, consumed liquor before pouring petrol on themselves and committing self-immolation. The incident occurred in the town about 190 km from here.

The police officer said the students were inspired by recent film ‘RX 100’ in which the hero ends his life for his lover.

K. Mahender died on the spot while Ravi Teja, who sustained critical injuries succumbed in a hospital.

Their families had suspicion that there could be some conspiracy. The police, however, found that there was nobody else on the scene.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Venkatramna said the boys purchased petrol and consumed liquor before immolating self.

Smugglers kill anti-drug activist in Delhi

October 2, 2018 by Nasheman

An activist who had been fighting drug smugglers and local criminals in south Delhi’s Taimoor Nagar was gunned down by two suspected smugglers who came to buy drugs near his residence, police said on Monday.

The incident occurred on Sunday night at around 9 p.m when the victim, Rupesh, 28, was playing with his children outside his residence.

The attackers first stabbed a drug peddler when they did not get fine quality drugs from him and later attacked Rupesh.

CCTV installed outside Rupesh’s residence captured the attackers running away. One wearing a white cap opened fire at Rupesh after he objected to their abusive language, victim’s wife Monica told IANS.

“I was standing at the balcony and saw the crime. I raised an alarm and ran to help my husband. He was taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries,” she said.

“My husband and his elder brother Umesh, along with locals, had launched an anti-drug campaign in Taimoor Nagar. They had earlier complained to the local police, the DCP’s office and also to the Police Commissioner, but nothing happened. Some drug smugglers had threatened my husband and his brother,” she said.

Hundreds of people blocked traffic on major roads in the area for a couple of hours, demanding early arrest of the killers. A mob torched a motorcycle and damaged a few vehicles in the area before the police used force to disperse the stone-pelting crowd.

“We have detained some drug smugglers and are trying to identify the accused. We will soon nab the attackers,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Chinmoy Biswal said.

“A vigilance inquiry has been ordered by the Joint Commissioner of Police to look into the lapses and omissions by the local police,” Biswal added.

The victim’s family has demanded police protection for Umesh.

India condoles deaths due to quake, tsunami in Indonesia

October 2, 2018 by Nasheman

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday condoled the death of more than 800 people in an earthquake and consequent tsunami in Indonesia last Friday and offered all possible assistance to the Southeast Asian archipelago nation.

India’s offer of help was conveyed by Modi during a telephone conversation with Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

“The Prime Minister offered deepest condolences on his behalf and on behalf of the people of India on the loss of precious lives in the earthquake and tsunami that hit Sulawesi region of Indonesia,” the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

“The Prime Minister appreciated the resilience and courage of the people of Indonesia in facing the challenges emanating from the widespread devastation due to this grave natural calamity,” it stated.

“In response to Indonesia’s appeal for international aid, the Prime Minister offered to the President of Indonesia all possible assistance from India as a maritime neighbour and friend of Indonesia.”

Mass graves were dug on Monday as Indonesia began burying hundreds of people killed by the earthquake and the tsunami that cracked streets, crumbled buildings and swept homes on the island of Sulawesi. At least 844 were confirmed dead and the toll was expected to climb, with heavily populated areas cut off from any assistance.

According to Monday’s External Affairs Ministry statement, President Widodo thanked Modi for offer of assistance.

“The two leaders agreed that the details of India’s relief assistance will be worked out through diplomatic and official channels,” the statement said.

H D Revanna transfers 700 PWD officials, Courts controversy

October 1, 2018 by Nasheman

As many as 700 Public Works Department (PWD) officials, from engineers to first division assistants have been transferred in a overnight decision. This decision has been taken despite regulations against the transfer of officials in the middle of a financial year.

This ill advised and sudden move by PWD minister HD Revanna has likely lead to more friction between the coalition partners Congress and JD(s).

On Monday, Several senior Congress leaders, including a few ministers and MLA met CM HD Kumaraswamy conveyed their unhappiness on the PWD minister HD Revanna’s transfer of 700 odd officials. They urged the CM to stall all the transfers immediately.

“Two ministers warned the CM that if Revanna does not mend his way the government may fall anytime,” informed an MLA.

Altogether 191 assistant engineers, 150 junior assistants, 200 assistant executive engineers, 20 executive engineers, and 10 superintending engineers have been transferred. Besides, office superintendents, first and second division assistants were also transferred.

Revanna is the brother of CM and has been in the news for wrong reasons. Recently he hit the headline for tossing biscuits at the flood victims at one of the relief camps. It is being said that the current transfers have been effected without consenting other departments. This has only caused discomfort to the ministers of the respective departments including the RDPR, Urban Development and the Water Resource Departments.

Duniya Vijay and 3 others get bail, 8 days after being booked for assault

October 1, 2018 by Nasheman

Eight days after he went into judicial custody, Sandalwood Actor Duniya Vijay and three of his associates were granted bail on Monday.

The 70th Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court granted set the bail amount at Rs 1 lakh. Vijay and his aides were also ordered to appear before the investigating officer regularly and cooperate with the investigation. Officials at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru said that they have not recieved a copy of the bail order from the court. “Duniya Vijay can walk out of the jail if the bail application reaches before 7:30pm. October 2 being a public holiday, he will be released on Wednesday if the bail application reaches anytime after 7:30pm,” a prison official said.

Earlier on September 26, the 8th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Bengaluru had denied him bail in connection with an assault case.

Duniya Vijay was arrested by High Grounds Police on Sunday for allegedly assaulting and kidnapping a man named Maruthi Gowda. Maruthi is the nephew of Pani Puri Kitty, Vijay’s former friend and trainer.

The High Grounds Police booked Vijay under IPC sections 365 (kidnapping), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement), 325 (punishment for causing grievous hurt) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and was subsequently remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.

The actor and three of his associates were lodged in Parappana Agrahara prison so far.

Meanwhile, officials at High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru have also registered an FIR against the complainant in the assault case – H Krishnamurthy alias Paani Puri Kitty, the alleged assault victim Maruthi Gowda and others.

The FIR was registered based on a counter complaint by actor Duniya Vijay. The actor alleged that Pani Puri Kitty and Maruti Gowda threatened his son’s life, pushed him and damaged his sports car on Sunday night near High Grounds Police Station. It was the same night Vijay was accused of assaulting Maruthi Gowda, a gym trainer at Ambedkar Bhavan, after a bodybuilding event.

Kitty was previously Vijay’s gym trainer and is the uncle of Maruthi Gowda. Actor Duniya Vijay is not new to controversy.

He was out on bail after being booked for abetment in connection with the ‘Maasti Gudi’ case – in November 2016, where a stunt shoot had gone wrong at the Thippagondanahalli Reservoir and resulted in the death of two actors.

In the scene, Duniya Vijay, Uday and Anil had to jump off a helicopter from a height of 100ft. While Vijay had a life jacket, the other two actors were not given any safety gear. Vijay was on the run for over a year after he was charged by police for helping accused producer P Sundar Gowda avoid arrest. He was also detained by police in connection with another assault, in which he allegedly beat up one of Sundar Gowda’s relatives.

HC dismisses petition against ‘triple talaq’ ordinance

October 1, 2018 by Nasheman

The Bombay High Court Monday dismissed a petition challenging provisions of an ordinance that makes the practice of instant triple talaq a punishable offence.

Former municipal councillor Masood Ansari, city-based NGO ‘Rising Voice Foundation’ and advocate Devendra Mishra had filed the petition last week.

President Ram Nath Kovind had last month signed the ordinance, according to which giving instant triple talaq has been made illegal and void, and will attract a jail term of three years for the husband.

Seeking to allay fears that the law could be misused, the government also included some safeguards in it, such as providing for bail to the accused husband.

A division bench of Justices B R Gavai and A M Dhavale said Monday that it was not inclined to entertain the petition as a similar plea was pending before the Supreme Court.

The petition claimed that the provisions of the ordinance are “illegal, null, void, unreasonable and arbitrary”.

It had sought an interim stay on those sections of the ordinance which criminalise the act of pronouncing talaq by a Muslim husband.

As per the proposed law, it would only be applicable on instant triple talaq or ‘talaq-e-biddat’ and would give power to the victim to approach a magistrate seeking “subsistence allowance” for herself and minor children.

A woman can also seek the custody of her minor children from the magistrate who will take a final call on the issue.
