Amritsar attack: CM announces Rs 50 lakh for information
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday announced a reward of Rs 50 lakh to anyone giving information regarding the two youths who carried out Sunday’s grenade attack on a prayer meeting at the Nirankari Satsang Bhawan of Amritsar district.
The Punjab Police has formed several teams to investigate the grenade attack in Adliwal village in Rajasansi area. CCTV footage of places near the blast was being scanned to know more about the two masked attackers.
Forensic teams and a team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) reached the spot late on Sunday to start the probe.
While some injured have been discharged from the Amritsar hospital, others are still recuperating. One of the injured was still serious, a police officer said.
Inspector General (Border Range) S.P.S. Parmar told the media on Monday that the probe would look at all angles and police teams were trying to trace the culprits.
In a major terror attack, three persons were killed and 20 injured when two motorcycle-borne youths threw a grenade at a Nirankari congregation about 15 km from Amritsar.
The attack on the campus located in the rural belt, around three kilometres from the Guru Ram Das Jee Amritsar international airport, created panic.
All victims were sect followers from nearby villages who had gathered for the weekly Sunday religious meeting.
Punjab Director General of Police Suresh Arora, who immediately rushed to the spot along with senior officers, admitted that it was a “terror act”.
TheAPunjab Police has drawn flak for intelligence failure regarding the attack despite the border state being on high alert since Nov 14 regarding the movement of six to seven terrorists in the state.
Eyewitnesses told the police that two youths on a motorcycle, their faces covered, forced entry to the sect campus by pointing a pistol at a woman volunteer at the gate.
There were around 200 followers in the campus at the time.
Amarinder Singh, who on Sunday directed the police to immediately enhance security arrangements at all sensitive places, terming it as “the first such indiscriminate attack on innocent people in recent past”, said that the “possibility of involvement of ISI-based Khalistani/Kashmiri terror groups cannot be ruled out”.
The Nirankari sect, with headquarters in Delhi, has millions of followers across the country and abroad.
In the last few months, Khalistani and Kashmiri activists have been trying to foment trouble in Punjab, which shares a 553-km long barbed wire fenced international border with Pakistan.
The Punjab Police, along with its Jammu and Kashmir counterpart, had busted two modules of Kashmiri students who were studying in institutions in Punjab and having links to terrorist outfits in troubled Kashmir.
The Maqsudan police station was targeted by Kashmiri terrorists on September 14 with hand grenades though no one was injured in the attack.
Posters of Kashmiri terrorist Zakir Mussa had mysteriously appeared in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district on Friday saying that he had been seen in Punjab.
The Chief Minister said 15 terror modules had been busted in the past 18 months, including those with Kashmiri terror links.

Rahul hopes RBI Governor will show Modi ‘his place’
Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday attacked the Centre with destroying institutions and hoped Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Urjit Patel will show Prime Minister Narendra Modi “his place”. He charged Modi with attempting to “destroy the RBI” through his “puppets” and “cronies”.
“Modi and his coterie of cronies, continue to destroy every institution they can get their hands on. Today, through his puppets at the RBI Board Meet he will attempt to destroy the RBI. I hope Patel and his team have a spine and show him his place,” Gandhi tweeted.
The RBI board meeting on Monday comes amid growing tension between the Centre and the RBI after the Finance Ministry recently sought discussions under the never-used-before Section 7 of the RBI Act which empowers the government to issue directions to the central bank.
The board is expected to take up the liquidity crisis that initially triggered the tiff between the government and the RBI.

India revokes 25 NRI men’s passports over marital discord
New Delhi The Indian government has revoked the passports of 25 men living abroad for abandoning their spouses in India, a Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) official said on Friday.
Of these, eight were recommended by the Ministry while the rest involved cases where the state police sought the action.
“We keep receiving such complaints where Non-Resident Indians have been held accountable for abandoning their wives. The action taken depends on priority,” the official said.
Apart from revoking of passport, in some cases the police also has the authority to issue Look-Out-Circulars (LoC).
In criminal matters involving NRIs, the LoC can be issued by the investigating agency in cognisable offences when the husband from overseas is deliberately evading arrest.
It could also be that he is not appearing in the trial court despite non-bailable warrants and other coercive measures or that there is likelihood that he will leave the country to evade trial or arrest.
An inter-ministerial body dealing with matrimonial disputes headed by WCD Secretary Rakesh Srivastava with members from Home Ministry and the External affairs takes the decision of issuing the LoC after the case is scrutinised by the National Commission for Women (NCW).

Mary Kom in quarters, Sarita out of women’s boxing Worlds
New Delhi Veteran boxer M.C. Mary Kom entered the quarter-finals while Sarita Devi lost her bout to crash out of the World Women’s Boxing Championship here on Sunday.
Mary registered a unanimous 5:0 win over Kazakhstan’s Aigerim Kassenayeva in the flyweight category (48kg). Sarita, on the other hand, lost by a 2:3 split decision to Ireland’s Kellie Anne Harrington in the lightweight 60kg category to bow out.
Apart from Mary, Manisha Moun, Lovlina Borgohain and Bhagyabati Kachari all marched into the quarterfinals on the fourth day of the championships.
In the first match, Mary started the first round on a positive note, landing a few punches and jabs without taking much risk.
The second round saw Mary displaying some attacking game. The veteran Indian boxer landed some powerful punches to take a much needed advantage.
In the third round, Aigerim tried to bounce back but it was too late as in the first two rounds she could not match the pace of the Indian boxer.
Mary will take on Wu Yu of China in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Talking after the bout, Mary said: “Feeling good, the pressure is off. I always enjoyed boxing, it has been my life whether I train or compete in tournaments,” said the mother of three children.
In the 69kg category, Sarita lost a close contest. Sarita showed some great moves. Towards the end Sarita pulled a lot of punches and also landed it on the mark but the umpires decision went in favour of her opponent.
“I thought I got unluckier. Some points did not go my way. But I will continue to box as long as I can,” said a dejected Sarita.
Among other players, Manisha outpunched her way to upstage reigning world champion Dina Zholaman from Kazakhstan with a unanimous 5:0 decision in the 54 kg pre-quarterfinals.
Equally impressive was Lovlina in her 69 kg pre-quarterfinal bout against Panama’s Atheyna Bylon, former world champion.
In the last bout of the afternoon, Baghyabati proved her prowess, beating Germany’s Irina-Nicoletta Schonberger in a split verdict (4:1) in the 81 kg category.

Pawan guides Bengaluru to victory vs Jaipur
Ahmedabad Pawan Sehrawat produced a terrific raiding performance as he led Bengaluru Bulls to 45-32 win over Jaipur Pink Panthers in Inter Zone Challenge Week of Pro Kabaddi League here on Sunday.
Sehrawat scored 19 points and two super raids by Rohit Kumar and Kashiling Adake laid the foundations for Bengaluru’s victory.
Jaipur Pink Panthers fizzled after a strong start with Deepak Niwas Hooda getting a super 10.
The first half saw both teams match each other stride for stride. There was little to choose from as in the 5th minute Deepak Niwas Hooda got a raid point to level it at 4-4.
The next couple of minutes saw Jaipur Pink Panthers put the pressure on Bengaluru Bulls as they opened a six-point gap. An all out was inflicted by Jaipur in the 9th minute as they led 11-5.
Bengaluru Bulls were jolted out of their stupor after the all out. Kashiling Adake made a brilliant super raid in the 13th minute as he scored four points to reduce the gap to just three points.
Bengaluru Bulls took the lead in the 16th minute as they inflicted an all out.
At the end of the first half, Bengaluru Bulls trailed 18-17.
The second half saw Bengaluru Bulls switch gears. First Rohit Kumar produced a super raid in the 22nd minute.
Pawan Sehrawat’s two-point raid in the 24th minute led to another all out on Jaipur Pink Panthers.
Anup Kumar was having a quiet match as in the first 30 minutes he scored just one point for Jaipur Pink Panthers.
Jaipur tried to make a comeback in the match but Pawan Sehrawat was having none of it.
Sehrawat got a super 10 in the 31st minute and followed it up a couple of more successful raids.
Jaipur’s fate was sealed when they suffered another all out in the 34th minute to trail 24-37.
Deepak Niwas Hooda did his best to get points for Jaipur and achieved a super 10. But it was a little too late as Pawan Sehrawat continued to plunder points to lead Bengaluru Bulls to a win.

Sara is star on ‘Koffee With Karan’ By Subhash K. Jha
Mumbai Sara Ali Khan’s debut film “Kedarnath” is around the corner. But to me her debut on Karan Johar’s talkshow on Sunday night proved she’s already a star.
Poised, articulate, relaxed, witty. And very eager to embrace the camera — Ladies and Gentleman, a star is born.
Say “Hello to Sara Ali Khan” in the best episode of Karan’s show this season so far.
Father, Saif Ali Khan, and daughter looked more like co-stars on the couch that says a lot about how much younger the heroines are getting.
This could also be as Saif made a very bohemian dad on the show. He had quick answers to Karan’s unconventional queries about his unconventional relationship with his daughter.
And Sara was equally quick in giving it back to Saif as good as she got.
For once, Karan chose to tread on the sticky side of the road, asking Sara about her relationship with her father’s second wife Kareena Kapoor(we can’t call her stepmom, as Saif warned us that evening).
Sara didn’t mince words. She described her parents as “wild”. I would have to go with that. It takes a whole lot of wildness to get where Saif has in life.
To be actually sitting on that couch with his grownup daughter all set to make her debut as a leading lady, and who is just five to six years younger than his wife.
Full marks to Sara for calling a spade a spade. And wild, wild.
Oh yes, there was also a section about what Karan described as the “elephant in the room”. I found that to be a strange way to describe little cute Taimur whose pictures break the internet almost every day.
Interestingly, Karan had got video messages on Taimur from a bunch of prominent paparazzi photographers talking on Taimur.
Let’s face it. I would like to see Saif with Tamir on Karan’s couch soon. He is by far the most successful Khan in Saif’s family. Sara seemed refreshingly free of sibling jealousy. Not surprising, considering Taimur is young enough to be her child.
Karan called their family “modern”. I would not define this family as modern. Just happy to do their own thing unmindful of the repercussions.
To me the star of “Koffee With Karan” was Sara Ali Khan who seemed so comfortable with her dad, with her host and with the camera, not particularly in that order though.
But then orderliness is not a big virtue of this spontaneously bohemian family.

14-year-old shot accidentally at religious event in UP
Lucknow A minor boy was shot dead in Etah district of Uttar Pradesh round midnight during a religious congregation, police said on Monday.
The 14-year-old was part of the crowd that had gathered to hear the ‘Bhagwad Katha’. He died on the spot after being hit by a bullet that was apparently shot to ‘kill’ Kans in the act being enacted on the stage.
Senior police officials rushed to the crime scene at the Bhaduiya Math village.
An official told IANS that it had been decided that the dummy of Kans hanging on a tree near the temple – venue of he congregation, would be shot and killed. The 14-year-old Pradeep who was watching the show was however shot in the chest in the firing that ensued.
He was rushed to a nearby medical facility where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Sanjay Kumar, additional superintendent of police (ASP) informed that a probe has been ordered and the body has been sent for post-mortem.
Many people die every year in Uttar Pradesh in celebratory firing during weddings and incidents like this. There is a ban on such firing but the law implementation is poor, an official averred.
