Al Qaeda plotting plane attacks in Europe: UK Security Minister
Nasheman News : A “resurgent” Al Qaeda is looking to carry out terror attacks on passenger planes and airports, UK Security Minister Ben Wallace has warned following the widespread chaos at the country’s Gatwick Airport over multiple drone sightings that triggered security concerns and led to numerous flight cancellations.
In an interview with British newspaper The Sunday Times, Wallace said Al Qaeda — the group behind the World Trade Centre attacks that killed almost 3,000 people in the US on September 11, 2001 — “still aspires for aviation attacks” and was developing technology to bring down airliners.
“The aviation threat is real. Al Qaeda have reorganized. They are pushing more and more plots towards Europe and have become familiar with the new methods,” he said.
The rise of the Islamic State overshadowed the Al Qaeda threat in recent years — particularly after its most prominent leader, Osama bin Laden, was taken down by the US forces in Pakistan’s Abbottabad in 2011.
But Wallace said the danger had never truly diminished. “Al Qaeda sat quietly in the corner and tried to work out what the 21st century looked like while IS became the latest terrorist boy band.”
“But they have not gone away,” he said.
Al Qaeda and its affiliates are now active in Syria, Afghanistan, Yemen, Libya and other countries in the Middle East under a new generation of leaders. Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden’s former deputy, is still its spiritual head.
Wallace said improvements in airport security meant terrorists were less likely to smuggle explosive through terminal security systems.
“They have explored other ways of getting bombs on planes. We’ve talked publicly about an insider threat issue. If you can’t get in the front door, you’re going to try to get in the back door,” he told the Times.
Wallace said British intelligence chiefs were concerned about US President Donald Tump’s decision to pull out troops from Syria and said that it will create a “new safe haven for Islamists to launch attacks on the West”.
Wallace’s statements came amid several drone sightings at Gatwick Airport over the weekend that triggered a security concern and led dozens of flights to be cancelled.
However, according to the British authorities the incident was not terror-related.
PM releases Rs 100 coin in memory of Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Nasheman News : A day ahead of the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, his successor Narendra Modi on Monday released a commemorative Rs 100 coin to honour the late leader, who passed away in August.
Addressing a gathering at the Parliament House Annexe here, Modi said Vajpayee never compromised on the ideologies of the party and always spoke about national interest.
“For some people, power is oxygen…they can’t live without it…A long part of Atalji’s career was spent in the opposition benches but he spoke about national interest and never compromised on the ideology of the party.
“For long, the voice of Atalji was the voice of the nation,” Modi said.
“I assume that there must be invitations from other ideologies for joining hands to remain in power. Such things must have happened. But he never compromised.
“He was among those who could die for the nation, but would never compromise on the ideologies,” Modi said.
Vajpayee wanted democracy to be supreme. He built the Jana Sangh but when time came to rescue democracy he and others went to the Janata Party, Modi added.
“Likewise, when the choice was between remaining in power or comprising on ideology, he left Janata Party and formed the Bharatiya Janata Party” which “has become among the largest of political parties”, the Prime Minister said.
Hailing Vajpayee as “the best orator”, Modi said “the mind is not ready to believe that Atalji is no longer with us. He was a stalwart loved and respected across all sections of society.
Modi said e would go to Vajpayee’s memorial on Tuesday — his birth anniversary — to reiterate his commitment to the ideology and path shown by the leader.
Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Minister of State for Culture Mahesh Sharma, BJP national President Amit Shah and veteran BJP leader and Vajpayee’s contemporary L.K. Advani were also present at the event to release the coin.
Commemorative coins are usually issued to celebrate some special occasion or to mark a special event. They also have been issued as a mark of respect towards some distinguished individuals or monument.
The coin, Modi said, is a small effort to show our respect to the former Prime Minister, “whose life is a message for all of us”.

“My deepest condolences to the families of victims who lost their lives in the Tsunami… Our prayers are with them as we stand by our Indonesian brothers in this hour of grief,” she tweeted.
On Saturday, giant waves crashed into coastal towns on the islands of Sumatra and Java, killing at least 281 people and injuring 1,016.
It is thought that volcanic activity set off undersea landslides which in turn generated the killer waves. Saturday’s tsunami struck without a warning.
Anak Krakatau erupted again on Sunday, spewing ash and smoke. Death toll steadily rose through the day as more and more bodies were recovered.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed his grief at the huge calamity. “Saddened by the loss of lives and destruction in Indonesia caused by the Tsunami after the eruption of a volcano.
“Condolences to the bereaved families and wishing the injured an early recovery. India is ready to assist our maritime neighbour and friend in relief work,” he tweeted last evening.
Social media went viral with images of video shot from a charter plane that captured the magnitude of the volcanic event in the Sunda Strait, between Sumatra and Java.
Coastal residents near Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano were again warned on Monday to keep away from beaches amid fears it could trigger a new tsunami.
Border security tightened ahead of Bangladesh polls
Nasheman News : Ahead of the general elections in Bangladesh on December 30, the Border Security Force (BSF) has heightened patrolling and vigil along the India-Bangladesh frontiers, a top BSF officer said here on Monday.
“Keeping in mind the general elections to the Bangladesh Parliament, we have further increased the security along the India-Bangladesh borders.
“BSF troopers are always ready to deal with any kind of situation,” BSF Tripura Frontier officiating Inspector General (IG) Ashok Kumar Yadav told the media.
“We have asked the BSF commanders and the troopers to keep a close watch on the borders. Patrolling has also been increased,” he added.
He also ruled out any possibility of mass infiltration.
Bangladesh media reports, monitored here, said that about 400-450 platoons of army troopers were deployed in 389 areas in 270 constituencies across Bangladesh on Monday to assist with the December 30 poll process.
“The Election Commission earlier announced that the army would be deployed as a striking force across the poll-bound country. The soldiers would remain in the field until January 2 or till the 11th Parliamentary elections ends,” the media reports added.
Quoting the poll official the reports said that the forces have been deployed to build up confidence among the people and political parties.
Two militants of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura, who were hiding in Bangladesh, surrendered before the BSF officials on Monday.
The BSF’s acting IG said that around 50-60 cadres of Tripura militant outfits were still hiding in their temporary camps in Bangladesh, mostly in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. “However, majority of these rebels are keen to return to mainstream.”
According to the official, 13 extremists surrendered to the BSF in Tripura in 2018.
Bangladesh and India share a 4,096-km long international border, the fifth-longest land border in the world.
A large portion of the border along Tripura and West Bengal is already fenced and work was underway for fencing the remaining part of the border.
