Audio-clip triggers allegations of bid to topple JDS-Cong govt
An audio-clip containing a purported conversation between a confidant of a former Ballari BJP MP and a Dubai-based businessman has triggered allegations of attempts being made by the saffron party to topple the Congress-JD(S) coalition government in Karnataka.
In the audio, which has gone viral, the confidant is heard saying at least 10 to 11 lawmakers from the Congress and JD(S) were ready to switch sides with specific names being mentioned.
“They have been offered Rs 20 crore to Rs 25 crore and ministership. By the second week, it has to happen,” the confidant is heard purportedly saying in the audio.
Subsequently, another video surfaced showing Belagavi strongman and Congress MLA Satish Jarkiholi visiting a resort in Belagavi, triggering speculation about a possible move to keep the dissident MLAs there.
When asked, Jarkiholi denied having any plans to shift loyalties though he conceded that there were at least seven to eight dissidents in Congress, not 25 as has been assumed.
“There are not 25 dissidents. Hardly there are seven to eight people but I am not among them. From the beginning I have been saying I will stay here only (in Congress),” Jarkiholi said.
The Congress MLA insisted that the party must address the grouse of the seven-eight MLAs though he admitted that even if the dissidents left the party, nothing will happen to the government.
Regarding his name featuring in the audio, Jarkiholi said such audio clips have been doing the rounds.
There were many clips doing the rounds where there are messages “calling people to come here and there and also that ‘we will make you a minister and give you money.”
“There is nothing new in it. It’s quite natural that attempts were made (to pull down the government). Nobody from our side will go there (in BJP). There are some dissidents but they will also not go away from the party,” Jarkiholi said.
When asked about his resort visit, Jarkiholi said, “We are looking for a resort for our future plans. We want to take our MLAs there – not for defection but just for the purpose of taking them around.”
Former Karnataka chief minister and the convener of theCongress-JD(S) coordination committee Siddaramaiah hit out at the BJP for its alleged attempts to dislodge the government.
“These people are trying to come to power through unethical means from day one. Already they failed once. Now they (BJP) are trying again by investing money,” Siddaramaiah claimed.
Flaying the BJP, Siddaramaiah said, “Where will they get the money if they are saying that they will pay Rs 25 crore (to each MLA)? Whose money it is? It is corrupt money.
Aren’t they ashamed for trying to topple the government? This government will continue despite their attempts,” Siddaramaiah said.
BJP general secretary N Ravi Kumar termed the audio “bogus” and said the Congress and JD(S) have been depending upon creating such “fictitious audios” for their survival.
The BJP spokesperson slammed Siddaramaiah for talking about corruption when he has not yet explained from where he got the expensive Hublot watch when he was the chief minister.
Embroiled in a controversy over the diamond-studded Hublot watch in March 2016, Siddaramaiah had handed it over to the assembly speaker, asking him to make it a state asset.

India lost Kartarpur to Pakistan in Congress scramble for power: Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday accused the Congress of making the “mistake” of letting Kartarpur Sahib – the final resting place of Guru Nanak Dev – go to Pakistan during partition due to its “scramble for power” post-independence.
The party overlooked the sentiments of millions of Sikhs attached with the holy place, he said addressing a public meeting in poll-bound Rajasthan.
Modi said that the Congress, during its 70 years of rule in the country, could not arrange for people to worship at Karatpur and he was fortunate that the job of building the Kartarpur corridor fell to his lot.
“We can understand the lure of power but I am surprised how in such greed balance is lost, what mistakes are made. Such mistakes are being made to this day. When India got its independence in 1947, when it was partitioned, such was the hurry to get into the seat of power they could not see that after the partition, done on the basis of religion, Muslims wanted a new nation … and made such mistakes that Kartarpur Sahib, the seat of Guru Nanak Dev’s learning and his final resting place, went to Pakistan.
“Had they had even a little sensitivity and wisdom about what place Guru Nanak Dev holds in the hearts and minds of the Indian people, our Kartarpur, a mere three kilometres away, would not have been taken away from us,” he said.
“The Congress remained in power for 70 years, battles were fought, battles were won also. Tall claims were made. But it could not make arrangement for one to worship at the Guru Nanak Devji’s resting place.
“It’s my good fortune that the job of constructing Kartarpur corridor came to my lot,” he added.
The proposed corridor will link Gurdwara Sahib Kartarpur to Dera Baba Nanak in Indian Punjab. Guru Nanak Dev spent the last 18 years of his life at Kartarpur Sahib.
The Prime Minister accused the Congress of indulging in a number of scams during its previous two terms and thanked people for voting for him.
“Take out any newspaper from five years back. Recall their headlines: ‘coal scam’, ‘lost this many crores’, ‘2G scam’. Was it not the case? ‘Submarine scam’, news of only theft and scams. Scams were only things that were there in newspapers,” Modi said.
“Today, it’s been five years, did you get to come across any such news since? What made all this possible. It was your vote.”

Pramila Jayapal recruits former Indian-American Obama aide
A former Indian American White House official has been recruited by Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal as her Chief of Staff.
Gautam Raghavan used to be the White House liaison to the LGBTQ community as well as the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community during former President Barack Obama’s time.
He has also been the founding Executive Director of Indian American Impact Project and Fund that supports Indian Americans in politics. He has also served as the White House Liaison and Deputy White House Liaison in the Department of Defence.
The move was announced on Monday, the US media reported.
A first-generation immigrant, Raghavan was born in India, raised in Seattle area and graduated from Stanford University.
Under Obama, Raghavan also managed White House and inter-agency policy working groups and directed the administration’s roll out and implementation of landmark accomplishments including the executive order prohibiting LGBTQ discrimination in federal contracting and marriage equality among other things.
“It’s a whole new part of government, and I’m obviously excited to work with Congresswoman Jayapal. I’ve known her practically my whole life, being from Seattle, Washington,” Raghavan told News India Times, a community newspaper.
“I have watched her establish herself as a bold, national presence, right from 9/11. She is certainly a very visible presence. She is not afraid to speak up,” Raghavan said.
Jayapal is the first Indian-American woman in the US House of Representatives. She has been a longtime immigrationrights leader and founded Hate Free Zone — later renamed OneAmerica — dedicated to advocacy work including registering new immigrants to vote and lobbying for immigration reform.
Pakistan PM Imran Khan says “War not a solution to Kashmir issue,”
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday said war is not a solution to the Kashmir issue, which can be resolved through talks.
In an interview to a group of television journalists in Islamabad, Mr Khan said unless there was a dialogue, various options on resolution of Kashmir cannot be discussed.
When asked about the formula to resolve the Kashmir issue, Mr Khan said there were two or three solutions, which have been in discussions.
He, however, refused to share more details, saying it was “too early to talk about them”.
Mr Khan claimed he was informed by late prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former foreign minister Natwar Singh during a conference that Kashmir would have been resolved if the BJP had not lost the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.
“It shows that there is a solution of Kashmir and both countries were close to resolve it,” the Pakistani prime minister insisted.
Ruling out the possibility of any war with India, he said two nuclear armed countries would not fight because “there are always unintended consequences”.
Asserting that Pakistan was serious to develop peaceful ties with all its neighbours, Mr Khan claimed India was not ready to hold talks with the country due to the upcoming general elections.
Replying to a query on his views on the military’s role in shaping of foreign policy in every country, including the US, he said, “Advice from the establishment is taken in those issues where security situation is involved.”
Mr Khan said the Pakistan Army and his government “are on the same page” and his decisions are “backed” by the military.

More than 4000 Criminal cases pending against MLA and MPs
The Supreme Court was Tuesday informed that there were 4,122 criminal cases pending, some for over three decades, against present and former members of Parliament and legislative assemblies.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi will Tuesday take up the issue relating to the criminal cases against the present and former legislators on a Public Interest Litigation.
The apex court had sought detailed data on the pending criminal cases against the present and former legislators from the state and various high courts so as to enable the setting up of an adequate number of special courts for expedited trial in these cases.
Senior advocate Vijay Hansaria who is assisting the court as amicus curiae in the matter along with advocate Sneha Kalita filed the data received from states and high courts and submitted it to the apex court.
The data compiled stated that in 264 cases, the trial has been stayed by high courts.
Further, the report said in several cases which have been pending since 1991, charges have not yet been framed.
The court will hear the PIL filed by lawyer and BJP leader Aswhini Upadhyay seeking a lifetime ban on politicians convicted in criminal cases besides setting up of special courts to expeditiously try such cases involving elected representatives.

Alikhan’s bail petition was filed on December 4
A case has been filed against Alikhan, who is currently in judicial custody in the multi-crore fraud case.
The court had on Saturday reserved its order on December 4, saying that the bail plea would be issued on the same day as the state high court verdict in another case.
CCB officials, who had objected to the bail application, were still required to prosecute Ali Khan. But the State High Court has given time till December 4 not to be forced to go against them. So inevitably we can not ask them for police custody again. He told the court that he would be taken into custody if necessary by considering the High Court judgment of D4.
Aligarh’s lawyer, who has disagreed with the matter, said, “The Supreme Court’s direction is that 15 days after the accused arrested and not given police custody more than 14 days. He also submitted a certificate to the court seeking withdrawal of the money received from the company. But the money could not be set up as it was in police custody and judicial custody. Bail to set up money, “he asked.
Three Hindu activists named in FIR for Bulandshahr violence
Three leaders from the Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and BJP have been named in the FIR lodged by police in the violence that rocked Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh killing a police officer and a young man, authorities said on Tuesday.
VHP activist Upendra Raghav, BJP city youth wing President Shikhar Agarwal and Bajrang Dal district coordinator Yogesh Raj have been named in the First Information Report in the wake of the violence on Monday.
The police have also arrested two others – said to be villagers – while five persons have been detained in connection with the violence that broke out after the recovery of some animal carcasses that the right-wing groups claimed were of cows.
When Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh tried to reason with the demonstrators and persuade them to clear the traffic jam they had caused, he was attacked both with blunt objects and also fired at, killing him instantly.
A young man was also killed in violence but the circumstances leading to his death are not clear.
The police have registered a case against 88 persons, of whom 25 have been named.
Five police teams have been formed and 22 places have been raided to track down those involved in the violence.
The raids follow details emerging from eyewitness accounts, interrogation of those detained and video footage shot by people present at the time, a police official told IANS.
The police focus is on Chingrawathi and Mahav villages, located close to the crime scene. The police believe the mob came from these two places.
The body of the slain police officer was taken to his village in Etah district where family members broke down at seeing his mortal remains.
Singh is survived by his wife and two sons. His widow Sunita told relatives that her husband had sought leave but it was not granted. She rued that had the leave been granted, he would not have died.
The officer’s elder son Shreya is studying MBA while his younger son Abhishek is a student of engineering.

Mayawati blames UP government for Bulandshahr violence
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Tuesday blamed the Uttar Pradesh government for the violence in Bulandshahr which claimed two lives, saying the “lawlessness” in the state was a result of its “faulty and wrong policies”.
In a statement, the four-time Chief Minister said that government was now faced with the same mobocracy it inculcated to make political gains over the past many years.
She said Monday’s Bulandshahr mob violence, in which a police officer and a young man were shot dead, reflected that the state government had lost grip on rightwing Hindu cadres which earlier targeted only Dalits, backward castes and Muslims.
Mayawati said that announcing financial assistance to the victims’ families was not enough and sought assurance from the Adityanath government that such incidents won’t be repeated in the future.
The violence broke out after the recovery of some animal carcasses that right-wing groups claimed were of cows.
Inspector S.K. Singh was shot in the head in the violence. A young man was also killed.
Singh was attacked by a mob when he tried to clear the traffic jam caused by the vigilantes carrying the carcasses on tractor trolleys and blocking a busy road.
