Injured Prithvi ruled out of 1st Test vs Australia

Sydney In a major blow to the Test series preparations, India’s promising opening batsman Prithvi Shaw suffered an injury in the warm up game against Cricket Australia (CA) XI at the Sydney Cricket Ground here on Friday.

Prithvi suffered a left ankle injury while attempting a catch at the boundary ropes during the third day of the warm up game.

“(Prithvi) Shaw underwent scans this morning and the reports revealed a lateral ligament injury. Shaw will be unavailable for the First Test against Australia in Adelaide,” BCCI said in a statement.

“He will undergo an intensive rehabilitation program to hasten the recovery and be available for selection at the earliest,” it added.

India is set to play its first Test match against Australia from December 6 in Adelaide.

Ireland, Afghanistan to play ODIs, Test in Dehradun

Ireland and Afghanistan are all set to play three Twenty20 Internationals, five One-Day Internationals and a one-off Test in February-March next year in Dehradun, India, the ICC announced on Friday.

It will be Ireland’s first overseas Test match, and the second Test match for the two newest teams at the highest level. Earlier in 2018, Ireland started out at home against Pakistan, losing by five wickets, while Afghanistan took on India in Bengaluru and went down by an innings and 262 runs, according to the International Cricket Council’s website.

The matches will be played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium.

“The Afghanistan series is a major step forward for Irish cricket as the tour is our first major tour as a Full Member. It will no doubt be a test for the entire squad – taking on Afghanistan in subcontinent conditions will require a level of adjustment by both our batting and bowling units,” Ireland batsman Andrew Balbirnie said after the itinerary was finalised.

“As we saw here at home in the summer, Afghanistan is a quality side with some world class players, and will be a great challenge in their ‘home’ conditions,” he added.

Aamir pitches in for TN cyclone Gaja survivors

Mumbai Superstar Aamir Khan is saddened knowing about the devastation Cyclone Gaja wrought on Tamil Nadu and has urged his fans and followers to contribute generously to alleviate their suffering.

“I’m very saddened to hear of the devastation caused by Cyclone Gaja in Tamil Nadu. Let us all come together to help our brothers and sisters there who are suffering. Let us try and contribute in any way that we can,” the Bollywood actor tweeted on Friday.

Tamil superstar-politician Kamal Haasan, who has visited the cyclone-ravaged areas of the state, thanked him for the gesture.

“Thank you so much Aamir Khanji. In many ways people like you make us feel it is truly ‘One Country’,” Kamal wrote back.

Cyclonic storm Gaja crossed Tamil Nadu coast on November 16 leaving over 50 people and thousands of livestock dead and damaging properties, standing crops, coconut groves, banana plantations and power distribution infrastructure in several districts.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought the central’s assistance of Rs 15,000 crore for 12 districts hit by the cyclone.

Cold wave grips Kashmir

Srinagar Minimum temperatures dropped further across the Kashmir Valley on Saturday with Leh in Ladakh region recording minus 9 degrees Celsius, the Met said.

Kargil came a close second at minus 8.5. Minimum temperatures dropped due to a clear night sky, an India meteorological department official said.

Srinagar city recorded minus 1.4, Pahalgam minus 5 and Gulmarg minus 3.3.

Jammu city recorded 9.6, Katra 9, Batote 5.9, Bannihal 7.9 and Bhaderwah 2.3 degrees Celsius.

Ex-US President George H.W. Bush dead

Washington George H.W. Bush, the 41st President of the US and father of the 43rd, who steered the nation through a tumultuous period in world affairs, has died at the age of 94 in Houston, his spokesperson Jim McGrath announced.

His death on Friday night came less than eight months after that of his wife of 73 years, Barbara Bush, reports The New York Times.

The cause of his death was not immediately known.

However, the former leader suffered from a form of Parkinson’s disease that forced him to use a wheelchair or motorised scooter in recent years, and he had been in and out of hospitals during that time as his health declined.

In April, a day after attending his wife’s funeral, he was treated for an infection that had spread to his blood.

Bush, a Republican, was a transitional figure in the White House, where he served from 1989 to 1993, capping a career of more than 40 years in public service.

A decorated Navy pilot who was shot down in the Pacific in 1944, he was the last of the Second World War generation to occupy the Oval Office.

Bush was a skilled bureaucratic and diplomatic player who, as President, helped end four decades of Cold War and the threat of nuclear engagement with a nuanced handling of the collapse of the Soviet Union and the liberation of Eastern Europe.

Born into privilege and a tradition of service, Bush was a son of a senator, student athlete, Texas oilman, Republican congressman, national party chairman, pioneering diplomat and spy chief, reports CNN.

After his own 1980 presidential campaign came up short, he served two terms as Ronald Reagan’s Vice President before reaching the pinnacle of political power by winning the 1988 presidential election, soundly defeating Democrat Michael Dukakis.

After losing the White House in 1992, Bush became a widely admired political elder who leapt out of airplanes to mark birthday milestones.

Emphasizing the generosity of his soul, he forged a close and unlikely friendship with Democrat Bill Clinton, the man who ended his presidency.

When Parkinson’s disease mostly silenced him in public, Bush flashed his sense of humour by sporting colourful striped socks.

Misty morning, very poor air in Delhi

New Delhi, Dec 1 (IANS) A misty Saturday morning in the national capital that notched 10.8 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature, experienced ‘very poor’ quality air, said System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR).

“There will be clear sky in the day ahead,” an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said, adding that the maximum temperature was likely to hover around 26 degrees Celsius.

The humidity at 8.30 a.m. was high at 75 per cent while visibility was 2,000 metres.

Friday’s minimum and maximum temperatures were recorded at 10.7 and 26.4 degrees Celsius, both one notch above the season’s average.
