Siddaramaiah still the most powerful leader in coalition Govt

December 25, 2018 by Nasheman

The loss of his home constituency of Chamundeshwari in Mysuru in the Karnataka assembly elections six months ago had left former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the back footing. Speculations were rife about a new wave in the Congress – one which put DK Shivakumar and Dr G Parameshwara, the Deputy CM of Karnataka, at the fore.

However, Siddaramaiah has once again proved his strength in the party: pulling the strings in the background, the leader proved his clout and support during the cabinet expansion, which took place on December 22.

Six out of eight ministerial berths were filled in by Siddaramaiah’s loyalists. As the Congress Legislature Party Chief, Siddaramaiah successfully had MB Patil inducted into the Cabinet. Two Kuruba leaders – CS Shivalli and MTB Nagaraju – who are known Siddaramaiah loyalists, were also given Cabinet berths.

Even Satish Jarkiholi, who had played a crucial role in Siddaramaiah’s victory in the Badami constituency, was inducted into the Cabinet during the expansion. Angered by the coalition’s move to not assign a ministerial portfolio during the first round, Satish Jarkiholi had openly rebelled against the party.

In order to reward the Ballari Congress leaders for the victory in the bye-elections, PT Parameshwar Naik and E Tukaram were given Cabinet seats in the expansion. Siddaramaiah’s move to include two strongmen from the Ballari region was also to ensure the Congress retains the Ballari Lok Sabha seat in the 2019 general elections.

By influencing the cabinet expansion, Siddaramaiah proved that his connections with the party’s high command and senior leaders are still intact. Congress insiders say that Siddaramaiah’s proximity to Rahul Gandhi has helped him retain his strength within the party. “After the assembly elections, Siddaramaiah has spent time and and put effort in Badami. Even though he lost in Chamundeshwari, he shifted his focus to strengthen the party’s presence in the northern districts. He showed that the defeat did not affect him. The high command has always relied on his political acumen, which is why he is still powerful,” a Congress leader said.

The rumblings of dissent

Soon after the names of the eight new ministers was announced, Ramesh Jarkiholi, who was dropped from the Cabinet in the expansion, has risen up in revolt. Ramesh Jarkiholi was benched pending good behaviour, especially after he openly threatened to quit the party earlier in October. Ramesh Jarkiholi had also held talks with the BJP, hoping he could negotiate a better deal with the Congress.

“When his brother (Satish) had rebelled openly, Ramesh Jarkiholi wanted to make his presence felt. He threatened to join the BJP and tried to get a good deal by making demands. The party’s high command did not want to set a bad precedent by giving in. He was sidelined for a reason,” a Congress leader said.

Meanwhile, Congress veteran and former Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy was also sidelined and not given a ministerial berth. Reddy has openly accused Siddaramaiah, Dr G Parameshwara and Law Minister Krishna Byre Gowda of colluding with each other to keep him out of the Cabinet.

Responding to his allegations, Dr G Parameshwara said that he had no role in Ramalinga Reddy’s name being rejected. “Of course every leader gets to suggest names. But the high command will take the ultimate decision. Krishna Byre Gowda and I were not involved in Ramalinga Reddy’s name being kept out of the Cabinet. After many rounds of discussions the names were selected. Dissent is common after the cabinet expansion and it will be quelled,” Deputy Chief Minister Parameshwara said on Monday.

Insiders in the Congress party, however, say that it was Siddaramaiah’s decision to not include Ramalinga Reddy. “Siddaramaiah wanted to solidify the Congress’ presence in North Karnataka. Hence, seven out of eight leaders inducted into the cabinet are from northern districts. Ramalinga Reddy is a veteran leader and has influence is in Bengaluru. It did not make sense to induct a leader from the city when the BJP was accusing us of not giving importance to the development of North Karnataka,” a Congress source said.

Ramesh Jarkiholi threatens to quit again

Ramesh Jarkiholi, in a conversation with a Kannada TV channel from Belagavi, said that he is “thinking of quitting” the Congress along with a few other disgruntled leaders.

“I will quit any time now. I won’t disclose the names and the number of leaders who are with me. I want to work for the betterment of the people of Belagavi,” Ramesh Jarkiholi said during the conversation.

However, sources in the Congress say that Ramesh Jarkiholi has been displeased with the recent goings-on in Belagavi’s political circles. Ramesh is allegedly disgruntled with the interference of other Congress leaders in his home turf and is trying to wrestle back the power he once held in the region.

“Ramesh Jarkiholi will be assigned the task of working to bring Congress to power in Belagavi’s Lok Sabha constituencies. Siddaramaiah already has a plan to pacify him. These words are just threats to show that he is powerful. Everything will be fine in the party in the next couple of weeks,” a Congress source said.

In an audio clip of Jarkiholi and five-time legislator from Gokak which has gone viral former minister Ramesh Jarkiholi has stated that he has decided to resign as MLA.

A day after being dropped from the state cabinet Ramesh Jarkiholi in the clip said that he may resign as MLA in the next few days or it may take a week or two and he is still unclear about the number of legislators who will join him.

It is gathered that two Congress MLAs from Belagavi district and five to six-party legislators from Ballari, Raichur and Koppal may hold a meeting in Bengaluru over the next few days before quitting as MLAs.

However, the bigwigs of the Congress Party informed that none of the legislators were quitting the party.

Addressing presspersons, in Belagavi on Sunday, December 23  President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee Dinesh Gundu Rao said that it is impossible to include every MLA in the cabinet. He further informed that the party leaders are in touch with party MLA B C Patil and yet to meet Ramesh Jarkiholi.

Bangalore Metro purple line some technical snag.Causes delay

Image result for Bangalore Metro purple line some technical snag.Causes delay

In yet another interruption in service in the Purple Line of Bengaluru’s Namma Metro, trains running on Monday morning faced a brief technical snag. This resulted in unforeseen delays causing inconvenience to passengers. For a brief period between 10am and 11am, information boards in the train stations went blank and trains came to a halt or moved slower than usual. Some passengers were stuck in stations for more than 30 minutes.

Trains have been plying at intervals of 15 minutes since December 12 when structural damage in the metro track’s bridge near the Trinity Metro Station were spotted. Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has already announced that trains will not run between MG Road and Indiranagar from 8pm on December 28 to December 30.

A metro passenger said, “Not only are the trains running late, but it is stopping for more than three-five minutes in every station.” The metro officials and security personnel in the stations were not informed of the problem.

“There is a technical glitch in Purple Line between MG Road to Baiyappanahalli. Trains will be running slow till restored in this section. Hence expect delays in this line . Inconvenience regretted,” Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited tweeted.

The resultant delays in the stretch in turn caused a disruption in the services along the entire stretch between Mysore Road and Byappanahalli. Train services along the Green Line were, however, unaffected.

After the issue was resolved, the Chief Public Relations Officer Chavan told media, “Our priority is to ensure that the rest of the services are running smoothly. We are trying to ascertain what caused the problem.”

BMRCL officials said that the delays were caused due to a problem in the metro’s signaling system in both directions between the two stations. Informed sources said the snag was caused by an interruption of power supply but it is yet to be ascertained.

Former police arrested for allegedly sexually abusing adopted daughter

December 24, 2018 by Nasheman

Greater Bengaluru police have arrested a former policeman for allegedly sexually abusing his adopted daughter for at least three years. The accused, 63-year-old Kiran*, was arrested on December 18 and has been lodged in Parappana Agrahara central prison since then.

Police had arrested Kiran based on the 17-year-old survivor’s complaint, more than two years after she fled home. Unable to deal with the ordeal anymore, the survivor had left home and started living at a nearby bus stop. Locals who spotted the girl had called Child Line (1098).

A senior police official told media, that BOSCO (Bangalore Oniyavara Seva Coota), a non-profit that works on children’s issues, had rescued the girl. Later, she was staying in a children’s home run by another NGO in the city. It was during one of the counselling sessions that the survivor opened up about the sexual abuse she had experienced in the past.

“The sexual abuse happened during 2013-16. The girl was rescued by BOSCO first. We came to know about the incident when she reported it to the NGO. We immediately booked the accused, he is currently in judicial custody,” the officer said.

A case has been filed under sections 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 6 and 10 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Kiran, who had retired as a sub-inspector from Bengaluru police, was working with a commercial gold loan company as a law advisor. According to the police, Kiran and his wife had adopted the girl after their biological daughter died a few years ago.

Preliminary investigation has found that Kiran’s wife did not help the survivor nor report her husband’s deeds to the police when she came to know about it. Kiran had allegedly been sexually abusing the survivor since the time she turned 13 and threatened to throw her out if she spoke up about it. Police claim that Kiran confessed that he would send his wife and other members of the household to the temple and assault the survivor.

Karnataka had the highest registered cases of crimes against children among the southern states for 2016 and 2017. According to data compiled by the Karnataka police, a total of 1,778 cases of POCSO were registered this year till November, with 167 cases of POCSO registered in November alone.

This happened along with the Cabinet expansion, which was a means for the Congress to quell internal rebellion in the Cong-JD(S) coalition in power in the state.

The Congress party on Saturday released a list with the names of people who have been given positions in the state-run boards and corporations in Karnataka. This happened along with the Cabinet expansion, which was a means for the Congress to quell internal rebellion in the Congress-JD(S) coalition in power in the state.

This comes after the announcement of the first list in June this year, however, the Congress had not decided who to appoint as heads of the corporations and boards in the state. The recent list also has also appointed seven parliamentary secretaries.

While NA Haris has been appointed as the Chairman of the BMRTC, Belagavi rural constituency MLA Lakshmi Hebbalkar has been given the the portfolio of Mysore Minerals Limited. Six members were added to the Cabinet, with preference given to leaders from North Karnataka, after groups from the region protested demanding adequate representation.

The party has finalised that MLA CS Shivalli, Hosakote MLA MTB Nagaraju, Yemkanmardi MLA Satish Jarkiholi, Sandur MLA E Tukaram, Babaleshwar MLA MB Patil, Harappanahalli MLA PT Parameshwar Naik, Mudhol MLA RB Thimmapur and Bidar MLA Rahim Khan will be inducted into the Cabinet. Batsmen definitely need to step up, feels Rahane

December 24, 2018 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : With the four-Test series between India and Australia currently locked at 1-1, India Test Vice Captain Ajinkya Rahane on Monday urged his team’s batsmen to step up and support the bowling unit in the third Test starting at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) here on Wednesday.

“The batsmen definitely need to step up. When we discuss the batting unit, that point is very important. Especially when we are abroad, the bowlers have been taking 20 wickets since South Africa, so if the batsmen help the bowlers the results will be favouring us,” Rahane told reporters here.

The right-hander, who has scored 164 in his last four Test innings, including two fifties, further said there was no point in looking back at what went wrong in the second Test at Perth, where India lost by 141 runs, and rather insisted on looking forward to a better performance in the upcoming match.

“I am really happy and excited about this Test match. We all know how big this Boxing Day is. Coming here at 1-1 is really good as we expected that Australia will bounce back in Perth,” he said.

“We had our chances in Perth but it is important to stay in present right now and give our best rather than thinking about what happened in the Perth or in Adelaide.

“It is important to give our best in every session. I think this is what matters in Test cricket. We have to give our more than 100 percent because the game can change in a session. We need some good batsman-ship in these two Test matches and I am sure our batsmen will take that responsibility,” he added.

Commenting on his individual effort with the willow in the opening two Tests, the 30-year-old exuded confidence on converting his half-centuries to a ton in the remaining two games.

“It (century) will definitely come. I`m really sure it will come in this Test match with the way I am batting since Adelaide,” he said.

“I think I will get two hundreds but it will be important for me not to think about it and continue the way I am batting. If I can read the situation well and bat accordingly it will be better for the team. Personal milestones can come later,” he added.

On being enquired about premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and middle-order bat Rohit Sharma’s injury updates, Rahane passed the query to the team management.

Ashwin sustained a left-sided abdominal strain ahead of the Perth Test while Rohit jarred his lower back when he was fielding in the opening Test at the Adelaide Oval.

“Team management is assessing him (Ashwin). They will be in a better position to answer,” he said.

“I guess Rohit is fit because he batted yesterday in the net and he is looking really good. We will, however, take a call after the net session tomorrow,” he added.

Nasheman News : Bhutan Prime Minister Lotay Tshering will be coming here on a three-day visit from December 27 in what will be his first state visit to India after asuming office in November, it was announced on Monday.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, Tshering will be accompanied by Bhutanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Economic Affairs and other senior officials.

“India and Bhutan enjoy exemplary ties of friendship and cooperation, based on utmost trust, goodwill and mutual understanding at all levels,” the ministry statement said.

“The upcoming visit of Prime Minister Lotay Tshering will provide an opportunity to the two sides to review the progress in our multifaceted partnership and to discuss ways and means to expand the enduring ties of friendship and cooperation for the benefit of the two peoples,” it added.

During the course of his visit, taking place during the golden jubilee year of the establishment of formal diplomatic ties between India and Bhutan, Tshering, besides calling on President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, would also hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and other ministers of the Union Cabinet would also call on the visiting dignitary.

Tshering’s Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DNT) party, formed in 2013, won 30 of the 47 National Assembly seats in the elections in the Himalayan kingdom held in October.

The country of 800,000 people, located between India and China, has chosen a different party to rule at each election since the end of absolute monarchy in 2008.

India is a leading development aid partner for Bhutan. There are a number of institutional mechanisms between India and Bhutan in areas like security, border management, trade, economy, hydroelectricity, development cooperation and water resources.

New Delhi has set up three hydroelectric projects in Bhutan with a total capacity of 1,416 MW, which are operational. About three-fourth of the power generated is exported to India and the rest is used for domestic consumption.
