Chennai, With the failure of conciliation talks, about 10 lakh bankers in private and government banks will go on strike on December 26 protesting against the merger of Bank of Baroda, Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank, the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) said on Thursday.
“During the conciliation meeting held in Delhi today (Thursday), the Additional Chief Labour Commissioner advised the three banks and IBA (Indian Banks Association) to hold negotiations with the unions and convey the Union’s concerns to the government,” AIBEA General Secretary C.H. Venkatachalam told IANS.
“No assurance came from either IBA or the government. Hence the conciliation talks failed and the December 26 strike stands,” Venkatachalam added.
The AIBEA is part of the nine unions in the banking sector under the umbrella body of United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU).
According to Venkatachalam, the strike was only against the bank mergers and there was no deadlock on the wage revision talks with IBA.
India is largely unbanked or underbanked with low density of banks. Mergers will kill bank branches while the focus should be on recovering the huge outstanding loans, the AIBEA said.
With Christmas on December 25, banks would effectively be closed for two days, affecting the banking public.
Though the bankers had wanted the strike on December 24, a Monday, for a bigger impact as the banks would then be closed for four consecutive days (December 22-25), the unions decided to strike on December 26 to lessen the impact on public.

Raman selected as next India women’s team coach: Reports
New Delhi, Former India opener W.V. Raman has reportedly been selected as the chief coach of the India women’s cricket team by the BCCI’s three-member ad-hoc committee headed by first World Cup winning skipper Kapil Dev.
Raman, 53, is presently serving as a batting consultant at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. The committee, which gave its final nod for the name of Raman, comprises former India opener Anshuman Gaekwad and ex-women player Shantha Rangaswamy apart from Kapil.
The panel had recommended three names — Gary Kirsten, former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad and Raman for the top post. According to sources, the board will be making an official announcement later on Thursday or Friday.
Raman, who has featured in 11 Tests and 27 ODIs, is best known for becoming the first ever Indian to score a century in South Africa in the 1992-93 tour.
Raman has earlier coached Ranji teams like Tamil Nadu, Bengal and the India Under-19 side.
The BCCI had invited fresh applications for the job after Ramesh Powar’s brief stint with the women’s team ended in controversial circumstances.
Powar entered into a tussle with ODI captain and senior player Mithali Raj on the selection issue in the recently concluded women’s T20 World Cup.
Kirsten, who had led the Indian men’s team to victory in the 2011 World Cup, was the first choice for the job. However, the South African was not willing to leave his current job as head coach of Indian Premier League (IPL) outfit Royal Challengers Bangalore and was thus ruled out.

Bombay HC confirms death for convict in Andhra techie’s rape-murder
Mumbai, The Bombay High Court on Thursday confirmed the death penalty awarded by a lower court to Chandrabhan Sudam Sanap, convicted of the sensational 2014 rape-cum-murder of an Andhra Pradesh techie, Esther Anuhya in Mumbai.
A division bench comprising Justice Ranjit More and Justice Bharati Dangre, confirming a women’s court verdict of December 2015 observed that the case fell in the “rarest of rarea category” and had “shocked the conscience of society.”
The court further said that they had not seen any “remorse” on the (then) 28-year-old accused, did not see possibility of any reform, and “such a person remains a menace to society.”
It was on January 5, 2014 when Esther, a 23-year old software engineer with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), was offered a lift by Sanap on his motorcycle from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus to her hostel in Andheri West.
Sanap raped and murdered Esther. Subsequently he burnt and disposed of her body at a desolate area on the Eastern Express Highway near Bhandup before driving away. Her half-burnt and decomposed body was found after 11 days when some pedestrians reported it.
Investigators who cracked the case nearly two months after she was reported missing said Sanap was a mobile phone thief and robbery was the main motive behind the crime.
That fateful morning around 5 a.m. Esther had returned by train to Mumbai by the Vishakhapatnam-LTT Express, after celebrating Christmas and New Year with her family in Machilipatnam.
En route, Sanap stopped the bike on the pretext that it had run out of petrol, then grabbed and dragged Esther to the bushes in the foggy darkness.
She strongly resisted him, but he repeatedly clobbered her with stones, raped and strangled her with a dupatta, took her two bags containing a laptop and other valuables and fled.
Later, he came back to search for her mobile phone but could not find it. He burnt her body and again left the crime scene.
Amid a series of protests and massive public support for Esther, the Mumbai Police and Railway Police succeeded in solving the case with the help of CCTV camera footages of that morning near the LTT premises and mobile call records.
Pakistan has no say on Jinnah House: India
New Delhi,India has made it clear that Pakistan has no say whatsoever on Jinnah House, the sea-facing bungalow in Mumbai of founder of Pakistan Muhammad Ali which is in the process of being turned into a cultural and convention centre.
“Pakistan is not in the picture,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said on Thursday in response to a question at a media briefing.
“They have no locus standi as far as this property is concerned,” Kumar said. “It is a government of India property.”
His remarks came after the Pakistan Foreign Office earlier in the day said that Islamabad would not relinquish its claim over the property.
Jinnah’s daughter Dina Wadia had moved the Bombay High Court in August 2007 claiming ownership of the property on the ground that she was sole legal heir of Jinnah.
After she passed away in December last year, her son and Wadia group chairman Nusli Wadia is carrying on the litigation process.
“We are actually in the process of renovating it and putting it to effective use on the lines of what we do with Hyderabad House in New Delhi,” Kumar said.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, in a letter to Mumbai BJP legislator Mangal Prabhat Lodha, said that the Prime Minister’s Office has approved the property to be transferred to her ministry.

Banks will be closed for 5 days due to holidays, strikes; starting Friday
Ahead of the strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) on December 26, one of the bank officers’ union has called a strike on December 21, demanding an unconditional mandate for the XIth bipartite wage revision talks, officials said on Wednesday. In the wake of strikes and holidays, the banks will remain closed from next Friday to Wednesday, except Monday and the banking services could adversely be affected on these days. The banks will remain closed on December 22 and 23 on account of fourth Saturday and Sunday respectively. December 25 will be a national holiday for Christmas.“We called the strike on December 21 demanding a full and unconditional mandate for the XIth bipartite wage revision talks based on a charter of demands submitted in May, 2017. No headway has been made in the process so far even after 19 months since discussion on wage revision began,” All India Bank Officers Confederation’s (AIBOC) Assistant General Secretary Sajay Das said.According to him, over 3.2 lakh officers of the union would participate in the strike as “no perceptible initiative” was observed from Indian Banks’ Association to impress upon the five banks who have not yet submitted the unconditional mandate”.The union opposed the current move to restrict the salary settlements only up to Scale III by citing non-receipt of the ‘unconditional mandates’ from five banks as a reason whereas 15 banks from the public sector and two private banks have already given ‘unconditional mandates’.“AIBOC believes that it is nothing but a farcical logic to restrict the wage negotiations up to the officers in scale III whereas the entire officer community is covered under unified Service Regulations,” the statement said.During the strike on Friday, services at ATMs are expected to be “normal” while on December 26, ATM services would also be affected. The strike call also features “the burning issue of the announcement proposing to merge three public sector banks – Bank of Baroda, Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank — and the consolidation of Regional Rural Banks, union’s West Bengal unit President Subhujyoti Chattopadahyay said.
