India’s quest for men’s hockey gold begins with clash against Pakistan.
India’s mens hockey team will begin its campaign at the XXI Commonwealth Games with a pulsating Pool B clash against arch-rivals Pakistan here on Saturday.
For the Manpreet Singh-led Indian team, 2018 is an important year, filled with multiple high-profile tournaments, with the CWG being the first target of the year. India had lost to Australia in the finals of the 2010 and 2014 editions of the CWG and this time, their aim is again to go the full distance.
“Currently, we are not thinking about how important this year is especially with the World Cup in Bhubaneswar being held in front of home crowd. The only thing we have on our minds right now is our first match against Pakistan on Saturday,” asserted the 25-year-old Manpreet.
The Indian team is grouped in Pool B also with Malaysia, Wales and England. Chief coach Sjoerd Marijne said: “For me, it is about focusing match-by-match, which means we build our rhythm and performance improving upon the little things or areas that has concerned us. We played practice matches against South Africa and Canada and every match we were better and played with good structure.
“It was important that we manage the intensity and mind set during these matches, so we are hungry for the ball in our first match against Pakistan,” stated the 43-year-old Dutchman.
Over the past two years, an India vs Pakistan clash has lost steam from being a blockbuster encounter that it once was. India, Asia’s undoubtedly best team at the moment, has dominated in all the six encounters winning by convincing margins.
“We are not thinking about past results against any team. We are focused on our own performance and would like to play with disciplined structure and ensure zero errors,” said Manpreet on the eve of the opening match.
Though past reults don’t count, India can take confidence not only from their good recent record against Pakistan but also their desirable results in major tournaments such as the Asia Cup 2017 and the Odisha Men’s Hockey World League Final 2017 where the team won gold and bronze respectively.
“To begin the tournament with a win is always crucial because it sets the right momentum going forward. We have had ideal practice sessions since our arrival in Gold Coast and are ready for a good match against Pakistan,” added Manpreet, who will play a key role in plugging India’s midfield with the forward-line.
Pakistan, on the other hand, will look to register their first win here after playing a disappointing 1-1 draw against Wales on Thursday.
The match pits India against their former chief coach Roelant Oltmans, who is credited for lifting the standard of the side after his appointment as High Performance Director in 2013. The Dutchman has a fair idea about the current Indian players and their qualities.
For India, drag-flick expert Rupinder Pal Singh will form wall of defence along with Harmanpreet Singh, Varun Kumar, Kothajit Singh, Gurinder Singh and Amit Rohidas. The goalpost will be guarded by experienced P.R. Sreejesh.
India’s midfield will see skipper Manpreet in the lead role, ably supported by the experience of Chinglensana along with young blood in Sumit and Vivek Sagar Prasad.
The Indian attack will feature a combination between experience and youth as S.V. Sunil, Akashdeep Singh, Mandeep Singh, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, Gurjant Singh and Dilpreet Singh are all in the team.
Dilpreet Singh and Vivek — who made their international debuts during the New Zealand tour — have been rewarded with this opportunity for a good show where the duo scored in important games.
Indian squad:
Goalkeepers: P.R. Sreejesh, Suraj Karkera.
Defenders: Rupinder Pal Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, Varun Kumar, Kothajit Singh Kadangbam, Gurinder Singh, Amit Rohidas.
Midfielders: Manpreet Singh (Captain), Chinglensana Singh Kangujam (VC), Sumit, Vivek Sagar Prasad.
Forwards: Akashdeep Singh, S.V. Sunil, Gurjant Singh, Mandeep Singh, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, Dilpreet Singh.
China warns of countering US tariffs
China warned on Friday it will counter tariff measures by the US even though it might lead to a trade war between the two countries.
If the US continued its protectionism despite opposition from China and the international community, China would fight to the end to “protect the interests of the country and the people”, China’s Commerce Ministry said in a statemen.
“We don’t want a trade war, but we are not afraid of such a war,” according to the statement cited by Efe news.
The statement came in response to US President Donald Trump’s announcement on Thursday that Washington was considering the imposition of $100 billion tariffs on China apart from an earlier one of $50 billion on hundreds of Chinese products.
After criticising the protectionism against free trade under Trump, China stressed it would continue to reform and open up while safeguarding multilateral trade and promoting global investment.
China, as per its earlier warnings, also formally complained against the US at the World Trade Organization over duties on Chinese products, claiming they exceeded US-bound rates and violated the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.
As tension grew between the two economic powerhouses, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres insisted on the need for dialogue on Friday, a few hours before he was scheduled to travel to China to take part in the Boao Forum, dubbed as the “Asian Davos”.
On Tuesday, the office of the US Trade Representative published a list of 1,300 Chinese products on which it sought to impose tariffs.
Hours later, China announced 25 per cent tariffs on 106 products worth $50 billion imported from the US.

Dairy products may increase bone density in older men
Men, take note. If you are suffering from low bone density or frequent pain in your spine due to ageing, then milk, yogurt and cheese may help you achieve a positive outcome, says a study led by an Indian-origin researcher.
The study found that a higher intake of dairy foods is associated with higher volumetric bone mineral density and vertebral strength at the spine in men.
The associations were most beneficial in men over age 50, and continued to have positive associations.
“The results of this study highlight the beneficial role of a combination of dairy foods upon bone health and these beneficial associations remain irrespective of serum vitamin D status in a person,” said Shivani Sahni, Associate Scientist at the Institute For Ageing Research in Boston.
For the findings, published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Density, the team included 1,522 men and 1,104 women from the Framingham Study, aged 32 to 81 years.
They examined quantitative computed tomography (QCT) measures of bone to determine associations with dairy intake.
However, no significant results was observed in women, except for a positive association of cream intake in the cross sectional area of the bone.
A previous research, presented at the Endocrine Society’s 100th Annual Meeting in Chicago, revealed that consuming a Mediterranean diet — rich in fruits, vegetables, grains, potatoes, olive oil, seeds, fish, low saturated fat, dairy products and red meat — may boost bones and muscle mass in postmenopausal women.

Hope Modi wins hearts in J&K: Mehbooba
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Friday said she hoped Prime Minister Narendra Modi wins the trust, hearts and minds of the people of her state.
In her felicitation message on the BJP’s Foundation Day, the Chief Minister tweeted: “Hearty congratulations to BJP India on its Foundation Day.
“I sincerely hope that India under Narendra Modiji can truly exhibit the moral leadership of the region by winning the trust, hearts and minds of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.”
The state is ruled by the PDP and the Bharatiya Janata Party in alliance. Their coalition was described as a meeting of the North and South Pole by the late Mufti Muhammad Sayeed.
YSR Congress MPs resign from Lok Sabha
All the five Lok Sabha MPs of the YSR Congress tendered their resignations to Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Friday — the last day of Budget session — to protest against their unfulfilled demand of Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh.
They are also enraged at the Speaker not taking up the no-confidence motion moved by the party against the Narendra Modi government.
The five MPs — Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy, Y.V. Subba Reddy, Vara Prasadarao Velagapalli, Midhun Reddy and Y.S. Avinash Reddy — had announced their decision to resign on Thursday itself.
The MPs would now proceed on an indefinite fast at the Andhra Bhawan in the national capital till their demand is met.
YSR Congress chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy also dared the rival Telugu Desam Party (TDP) to follow the suit.
“We do as we say! YSRCP MPs are submitting their resignations today (Friday). I challenge Chandrababu Naidu to make TDP MPs resign and stand united with the people of Andhra Pradesh in their rightful demand of special status for Andhra Pradesh,” Jaganmohan Reddy tweeted.
The YSR Congress, as well the TDP, staged noisy protests inside both Houses of Parliament over the demand of special status to Andhra Pradesh ever since the second-half of the Budget session had commenced on March 5.
While the TDP quit the ruling coalition — the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) — over the issue, the YSR Congress gave notice for the no-confidence motion against the Modi government.
However, the Speaker did not take up the motion even as other opposition parties also gave no-confidence notices, saying the motion could not be taken up when the House was not in order.
“On one pretext or the other, the Speaker is not admitting our no-confidence notices and has been denying us a discussion on the motion. We have given at least 12 notices. If the motion is not taken up again on Friday, we will have no choice but to resign,” Vara Prasadarao Velagapalli of the party had said on Thursday.
Bowing to a long-pending demand by a section of the state’s population, the central government had in 2014 bifurcated the state to carve out Telangana and residuary state of Andhra Pradesh by getting the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act passed in Parliament.
The Andhra parties say that Telangana, despite having less population, has walked away with the largest chunk of resources as it has got Hyderabad as its capital. Hence, they demand special status for Andhra Pradesh which entails special financial packages and other perks from the central government.

The Karnataka High Court on Thursday requested a notice to the manager of Kannada weekly ‘Hello there Bangalore’ Ravi Belagere, over a petition documented by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) for cancellation of his bail.
The CCB had documented a charge sheet blaming Belagere for hiring a sharpshooter to execute his partner, Sunil Heggaravalli. Justice Srinivas Harish Kumar, who issued the notice, requested Belagere to document objections to the petition and adjourned the hearing.
The CCB’s petition argued that Belagere had submitted old medical records, not the ones identifying with his present health condition, to get bail from the lower court
