Nasheman News : Accusing the BJP of having aligned with central agencies like the CBI and the ED, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday appealed to the opposition to come together and defeat the conspiracies being hatched to divide alliance partners in states.

The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said the issue of Prime Ministerial candidate will be decided by the people.

He said with the beginning of the new year, the country now was pining for a new Prime Minister.

“How happy will the country be if it gets a new Prime Minister,” the Samajwadi Party (SP) leader said.

“They (BJP) say look how many prime ministerial aspirants the opposition has. At times, they say we have lot of grooms. My response to them is — We will see to it. Whoever people decide, will become prime minister,” Yadav said at the mega rally of the opposition parties here.

Dubbing the BJP government at the Centre as a ‘failure’, which has “disappointed and defrauded the nation and its people”, the SP leader accused the Modi regime of “spreading hatred” in society,

Referring to the alliance stitched by his party and the Bahujan Samaj Party in Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav said “Now only a few parties have aligned. Wait for all parties to come together. We have seen how you (Modi) have forged alliances to come to power.

“Now, we have brought all the best in the country on the same platform, and we will prepare a beautiful bouquet,” he said.

The SP chief said, unlike the BJP, the opposition has allied with the people of the country. 

“You are making alliances with the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) and ED (Enforcement Directorate). But we have alliances with the people. And in democracy, whatever people decide, that happens,” he said.

Yadav appealed to the leaders opposed to the BJP to remain vigilant about conspiracies that would be hatched to wean away their alliance partners.

“Since my party formed the alliance with the BSP, the BJP is holding daily meetings to find ways and means of winning at least one seat in Uttar Pradesh.

“The BJP knows it cannot win votes on the basis of performance. So it will hatch conspiracies to wean away your partners.

“I appeal to you to see through their conspiracies, and work to save the country, by strengthening your parties, and ensuring the victory of your candidates in the parliamentary polls,” he added.

Nasheman News : Over a hundred Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators, who were housed in two hotels here in Haryana for the last five days, on Saturday left for their homes.

The MLAs who were put up in the ITC Grand Bharat resort and Lemon Tree hotel since January 14, on Saturday afternoon left for their ‘respective destinations’, a BJP source told media.

“We were here to discuss about the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. There was no link of our staying here regarding political changes being noticed in Karnataka,” an MLA told the media as they were leaving.

When asked why the legislators from the other states were not here to discuss the poll strategy, one MLA said: “Please ask the central leadership, we have done our job.”

The MLAs said they were happy during their stay in Haryana and the total number of MLAs were 104, three of them had left the hotel in the last three days. They would be happy to come back again.

Around 25 MLAs of the 104 Karnataka BJP legislators put up at the ITC Grand Bharat resort for the last few days were shifted to the nearby Lemon Tree hotel on Friday as booking period of rooms was over.

Zakir Naik’s assets worth Rs 16.4 crore seized by ED

The agency is probing the case after taking cognisance of an FIR filed by the NIA against Naik, who is said to be based in Malaysia at present.

The ED has attached fresh assets worth Rs 16. 40 crore in connection with its money-laundering probe against controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, it said on Saturday.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), in a statement, said it had issued a provisional order for attachment of Naik’s assets, located in Mumbai and Pune, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The estimated value of the immovable assets was Rs 16.40 crore, the central probe agency said.

This is the third such attachment in the case by the ED.

The agency is probing the case after taking cognisance of an FIR filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) against Naik, who is said to be based in Malaysia at present.

With the latest order, the total value of assets attached in the case by the ED stands at Rs 50.49 crore.

Nasheman News : Congress stalwart Sonia Gandhi on Saturday described the opposition rally here as an “important attempt” to galvanise leaders across the political spectrum to fight the “arrogant and divisive” Narendra Modi government.

In her message to the rally, which she and her son Congress President Rahul Gandhi decided to give a miss, she wished the event “all success”.

“This rally marks an important attempt to galvanise leaders across the political spectrum to fight the arrogant and divisive Modi-rule. I wish them all the success,” she said.

Her message was read out by Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, who represented the party, along with its spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi at the Brigade Parade ground organised by Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Senior leaders of 23 political parties attended the rally.

Painting a grim picture of the country, Gandhi said: “Crisis looms across our farmers and extends to our borders; the youth are jobless; rice and jute farmers are under stress and fishermen are incurring deep losses.

“The country at large is under immense strain — economically our citizens have been screeched, politically our institutions have been undermined and socially our pluralistic fabric stands vitiated.”

The former Congress president said the upcoming Lok Sabha election would not be an “ordinary one”.

“This will be an election to restore the nation’s faith in democracy, defend our secular ethos and heritage; and defeat the forces that are trying to sabotage the Constitution of India.”

I-League: Chennai City beat Aizawl 4-3, inch closer to I-League title

 Nasheman News : Sandro Rodriguez scored on either side of the half and Pedro Manzi helped himself score arguably the goal of the season and another to boot, as Chennai outclassed Aizawl FC 4-3 to take a step closer to the I-League crown at the Nehru stadium here.

Albert got a 37th minute equaliser for Aizawl after Sandro gave the hosts a lead in the 28th, and for a while till the quarter hour-mark of the second-half, the visitors looked in the ascendency before Manzi Magic struck a definitive blow to take the game away from Aizawl, despite a late rally by them.

The win takes them to 30 points with seven more games to go and an eight-point gap from their nearest rivals at this stage. Stanley Rozario, the new Aizawl coach, looked positive, to begin with Albert Zohmingmawia Vanlalduatsanga in place of Lalrosanga and Fanai, who had started the previous game.

For the hosts as well, Akbar Nawas was forced to leave out a suspended Roberto Eslava and played the versatile Jozef Kaplan in defence. Sri Ram was also replaced by Srinivasan Pandiyan, who came back from suspension.

Chennai took the lead in the 28th minute after a move created by Pravitto Raju on the right saw him try to set up a Nestor with a cut back in. The Spaniard displayed vision to leave it for Sandro backing up, who let go from distance and the ball caught Gurpreet’s palms before going into the Aizawl net.

About 10 minutes later, Alfred Jaryan muscled the ball away from Pandiyan in the centre of midfield and played a quick 1-2 with Kasagga and upon getting the ball back, released Albert who had made a darting run into the box from the right.

The talented youngster brought back by Stanley Rozario after not getting much game-time during Raikhan’s tenure earlier, coolly slotted the ball between Santana’s legs and into the Chennai net.

From then till the 60th minute of the game, Aizawl clearly looked the better team and threatened many a time to take the lead.

Ivorian Zikahi Dodoz was guilty of missing at least two gilt-edged opportunities to score. Chennai also had their fair share of misses and Romario was the main culprit missing a sitter in the 58th minute after misdirecting a volley earlier.

Then there was simply some Manzi Magic at the hour mark.

A ball cleared by Romario from the Chennai back line bounced in front of Pedro Manzi just inside the Aizawl half near the right touchline. The Spanish sniper took a touch forward, looked up, saw keeper Gurpreet off his line and fired from 40 yards out to lob the keeper and nestle the ball into the Aizawl net.

It was a goal worthy of taking him to the top of the 12th Hero I-League goal scorers’ list with his 12th of the campaign.

It was a goal feast from then on with Sandro getting his second of the game in the 69th, not for the first time in this year’s campaign, swinging in a brilliantly taken free-kick, to beat Gurpreet all ends up.

Nestor, who had a relatively quieter day, then got into the mix, playing in the perfectly weighted ball into the box for Manzi, who had initiated the move from the right. The striker chipped in calmly over the keeper for this 13th.

Then in injury time, Aizawl attempted an outrageous comeback with two more outstanding goals, ushering in a thrilling finish.

First, Isaac controlled a second ball off a corner, took a touch forward with his left foot to create space and curled it intelligently over Santana in the Chennai goal.

A minute later, Aizawl intercepted the ball in the midfield and Mapuia, played on inside the box, shrugged off his marker to unleash a right-footer past Santana. It was Mapuia’s third of the season and all his goals have been quality so far.

Not publicity hungry but performance-driven PM needed: Andhra CM

Nasheman News : Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the “publicity Prime Minister” and said the nation needs a new Prime Minister who can perform.

“This Prime Minister is a publicity Prime Minister, not a performing Prime Minister. He and his government have betrayed the nation. 

“The country wants a performing Prime Minister, someone who would work for the betterment of the poor,” Naidu said here at Mamata Banerjee’s united opposition rally.

Accusing the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre of trying to divide the nation, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief said the opposition forces were getting united to save the democracy and urged people to carefully choose who they like to go with in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

“Today is a historic day. The BJP and NDA want to divide India and we want to unite India. That is the purpose all the leaders have come here with one voice — Save India, save democracy and also unite India — that is the campaign we are going ahead with,” Naidu said.

“Do you want Modi and Shah to come back in power (after 2019)? Do you want change or not?” he asked the massive crowd at the rally.

Hailing West Bengal Chief Minister Banerjee’s efforts to bring senior opposition leaders from across the country on one stage, Naidu said he would like to hold a similar opposition rally in Andhra Pradesh’s Amaravati and invited all the leaders present on the stage at the Brigade Parade Ground.

“We want to organise another rally like this in Amaravati. I invite all the leaders there,” he said.

He criticised a number of central government policies, including the demonitisation move, GST, agricultural policies and fuel price hike, claiming current regime has only given a “high performance in corruption”.

“Modi betrayed farmers in a big way. A big fraud is going on in the name of agricultural policies. A number of states, including Andhra Pradesh and Bengal are doing far better than the Centre in terms of farmer welfare,” he said.

He further accused the Centre of interfering with the federal set-up and harassing the states run by opposition parties’ governments.

“The government is also interfering in the federal set up. They are harassing the states. They are creating problems in Kashmir and Karnataka. We want to warn the Centre from here today that if it misbehaves with Karnataka in any way, it will have to pay a big price,” Naidu said referring to the claims of horse trading allegedly underway to destabilise the JD-S-Congress government.

Echoing former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, Naidu also termed the use of electronic voting machines (EVM) as a big fraud and said the country should go back to paper ballots in the next elections.

He said the entire country’s mood is to have a new Prime Minister in 2019.

“In 2019 India is going to see a new Prime Minister. That is the mood of the nation. We are considering the nation first. To protect the nation and save democracy everyone in this country must be united,” he added.

Nasheman News : Traditionally a tough, rural sport practised by ‘pehlwans’ in villages across the length and breadth of India, kabaddi has been flying high in recent years due to the money and glamour brought in by the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL).

This new-found professionalism has certainly helped the top-level players and turned this typically ‘desi’ sport into a lucrative career option.

But going by a longstanding trend in Punjab, the benefits are yet to trickle down to the average athlete at the village level in the state.

Generally considered to be one of the traditional powerhouses of kabaddi in the country, players from Punjab are making news in faraway Canada for the wrong reasons. 

Nearly 47 per cent of the youth going to the country in the name of participating in Kabaddi tournaments have failed to return, a confidential report of the Canadian government has pointed out.

“In 2015, 2016 and 2017, visas were issued to 261 kabaddi players. Forty seven percent of them failed to report back to the migration office in Chandigarh, 26 per cent obtained work permits after entry to Canada and 1 per cent made refugee claims,” the internal report of Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (Ministry), which is with media, has stated.

“While the rate of return increased from 42 per cent in 2015 to 62 per cent in 2017, the rate of persons obtaining work permits unrelated to Kabaddi has also increased from 21 per cent to 30 per cent,” it pointed out.

The youth are invited to Canada by kabaddi federations based there to play matches organised by the strong Indian community residing in the country.

“The rate of players who obtained work permits after entry to Canada (26 per cent) in 2015, 2016 and 2017 suggests that they intended to enter Canada primarily for long-term work unrelated to playing Kabaddi,” the report said.

Selection by a Canada-based kabaddi federation for visa facilitation effectively allowed the players to circumvent the conventional examination of work permit applications at a migration office outside of Canada. 

With an increasing number of youth applying for Canadian visa in the name of kabaddi, the Canadian ministry, in 2017, had invited kabaddi federations in Canada to participate in a pilot programme related to the sport. 

Players and federations were informed of the requirement to report back to the migration office at the conclusion of the season in Canada in December 2017. That year, 78 kabaddi players’ applications were approved for the four inviting federations. Of these, only 62 per cent reported back while 30 percent stayed back and obtained a work permit by presenting themselves with a labour market impact assessment at a land port of entry as “visa exempt” clients.

Among the four federations, according to the report, players of two federations had a rate of return of 29 per cent only. Players of the other two federations had an 88 per cent rate of return.

When contacted by media, officials at the national kabaddi federation refused to comment on the issue.

“The federation has nothing to do with this issue. These players go abroad on their personal initiative and at the behest of tournament organisers over there,” an official said on condition of anonymity.

Earlier, rate of refusal of visa applications for Kabaddi players was as high as 65 per cent (in 2014). 

Canada’s Chandigarh visa office receives the vast majority of temporary resident applications from kabaddi players wishing to play in Canada. 

“Kabaddi players applying through Chandigarh are typically young, single unsalaried males with limited economic prospects in their home county. Most belong to rural agricultural families with modest land holdings which may be held in common with several persons. Most applicants play for their village club which is usually supported by local patrons. It is difficult to gauge a player’s skill or standing in the sport as there is no formal structure at this level,” the report pointed out.

“Misrepresentation and fraudulent documentation are of concern. Fraudulent documentation, including photo-substituted evidence of applicants playing kabaddi, have been encountered among the supporting documentation submitted with applications,” it added.

Regional parties can fulfil people’s aspirations: Karnataka CM

Nasheman News :  Calling upon all regional parties to come together, Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Saturday said they are the only ones who can fulfil the aspirations of the people and termed the Centre’s ruling BJP a “paper tiger”.

“The non-BJP leaders should join hands and root out the BJP. BJP is merely a paper tiger. We the regional parties are the only ones which can understand and fulfil the aspirations of the people,” Kumaraswamy said at the United India Rally at the Brigade Parade Ground here.

“I firmly believe that regional parties have the strong instinct to connect with people and understand the common man’s interest in their individual states.”

Citing examples, he said: “In Tamil Nadu we saw the late M. Karunanidhiji who won the hearts of the people and met their aspirations.

“Similarly in Uttar Pradesh, the SP-BSP have been doing a great job. If you go to Andhra Pradesh, (Chief Minister) N. Chandrababu Naidu has taken the state to new heights. 

“Mamata Banerjee has transformed West Bengal in the last seven years. She has empowered women in the state.

“All regional leaders have strived to protect the interest of their states. Real India is at the grassroots. It is one of the strongest democracies in the world.”

Terming the Bharatiya Janata Party as “undemocratic and against the Constitution”, Kumaraswamy said the Union government has turned deaf and blind to the plight of the common man.

“Today, we are witnessing a system where ironically a democratic government is headed by undemocratic, anti-constitutional leaders at the Centre. They do not respect people’s aspirations.

“The Union Government has turned blind and deaf to the plight of the common man. The irony is that though the states understand their problems, their hands are tied. They were made mute spectators. This is not a healthy sign.”

Kumaraswamy was all praise for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who organised the opposition rally, and urged her to look after the well being of the people. 

“Mamata Banerjee’s simplicity and the way she responds to their (people’s) grievances, the urge she has for the well being of the people of the country have left indelible impression on me.

“Didi (elder sister, as Mamata Banerjee is affectionately called) has always been a role model for the country. She has always stood for women empowerment. I am happy to be part of this rally.

“We will march together to build a new, strong India. My father had taught me over the years the same lesson, to be simple and humble like Didi.”

Loan waiver not a permanent solution : HDK

 Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Friday said that loan waiver for farmers is not a permanent solution for farmers in distress, instead they should be made financially stable. Kumaraswamy was speaking after inaugurating the three-day International Organic and Millet Fair, in Bengaluru. “By loan waivers, farmers will not get a remedy. They should be prepared for distress.

As a step towards enhancing their stability, the state government has already geared up to adopt Israeli farming technology, where they analyse what crop should be grown on a piece of land, based on the rain pattern the land has seen in the last 20 years. Our government is committed to help farmers get profits from their farming, we just need their cooperation,’’ he said.

Further, the CM said that in today’s agriculture system, farmers are in distress because they are not getting the required support price.

“For that, there is a need to change the system, by adopting millets. This is challenging. In order to help them, we are proposing that millets be used in mid-day meals and Indira 
canteens,’’ he said.

Rural Development and Panchayath Raj Minister, Krishna Byregowda said Karnataka is a pioneer in encouraging farmers to grow millets. “We have set the trend, not just for India, but for the globe. Now, the United Nations has agreed to observe 2023 as the Year of Millets. Millet is the future and it is called as 
smart food of the 21st century,’’ he added.

Nasheman News :  Cold nights with temperature dropping to a low of 11 degrees Celsius continued in Bengaluru, with fog during early hours disrupting at least 50 flights, officials said on Saturday.

“The maximum temperature in the city over the last 24 hours was 29 degrees Celsius. Fog and mist was common during early morning hours in most areas,” the weather bulletin issued at 2 p.m. by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

While the minimum temperature in Bengaluru city was about 14 degrees Celsius, the recording at the Kempegowda International Airport Ltd (KIAL) on the outskirts stood at about 11 degrees Celsius.

Due to the fog, as many as 40 flights — 28 departures and 12 arrivals — were delayed, a statement from the airport operator Bengaluru International Airport Ltd (BIAL) said.

“A total of 10 flights were diverted to Chennai, Coimbatore and Hyderabad,” it said.

Fight operations were suspended at the airport from 7.04 a.m. to 8.51 a.m. owing to low visibility due to fog, the statement added.
