Nasheman News : A confident India will aim to maintain their winning streak when they take on hosts New Zealand in the fourth contest of the five-match rubber at the Seddon Park here on Thursday.
The Indian team has already taken an unassailable 3-0 lead and will now be led by stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma as Virat Kohli has been rested for the last two matches.
The men in blue have been in great form recently. The Indian opening pair of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit will once again lead the Indian batting attack and the duo have been the leading run scorers of the rubber with 169 and 160 runs respectively.
Both the openers have been in fine form with two fifties in three games and will try to replicate their past performance. In the absence of Kohli, the middle order responsibility will be on Dinesh Karthik, Ambati Rayudu and Kedar Jadhav.
All the batsmen have done well in the series. However, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s participation is under the scanner as the stumper suffered a ‘rare’ injury, pulling his hamstring.
In the bowling department, the spinning duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav have been the major threat for the Kiwi batsmen. The two have been successful in picking up wickets at regular intervals and have also been economical.
In the pace attack, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami have been equally impressive.
On the other hand, Ross Taylor has been New Zealand’s key run scorer in the series with 139 runs and has scored a century in India’s previous meeting at this ground. Also, Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson has shown some resistance against the Indian bowling attack.
A lot will also depend on openers Colin Munro and Martin Guptill, who have failed to click so far.
In their bowling, Ish Sodhi has been replaced by Todd Astle for the last two games and the all-rounder is likely to make his way into the playing XI.
Pacer Trent Boult, who had four wickets in the last two games, has been the most effective for the Kiwis. He, along with Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee, will shoulder the responsibility in the pace attack.
With the visitors already sealing the series, the men in blue will aim to continue their dominance while the hosts will try to salvage some pride.
Teams:
New Zealand: Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Kane Williamson (Captain), Ross Taylor, Tom Latham (Wicket-keeper), Henry Nicholls, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Todd Astle, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, Tim Southee, Matt Henry

Davis Cup: We have no room for excuses now, feels Bhupathi
Nasheman : Playing on grass which is what they wanted, India do not have any excuses now going into their Davis Cup World Group qualifiers tie against higher-ranked Italy at the Calcutta South Club, feels non-playing captain Mahesh Bhupathi.
The grass courts of South Club were chosen as the venue as Bhupathi was keen to play on grass considering that the Italians are solid hard court players.
“We definitely felt that this is our best chance to beat Italy on grass and not on hard or clay because of their strengths.”
“So we’ve got the grass now I don’t think we have any room for excuses anymore,” Bhupathi said at the pre-draw press conference on Wednesday.
The Indian team coached by Zeeshan Ali and boasting of the seasoned doubles pair of Rohan Bopanna-Divij Sharan, in-form singles players Prajnesh Gunneswaran and Ramkumar Ramanathan came in early to get used to the courts here.
The hosts trained at the Gymkhana Club for the first five days before hitting the South Club practice court, which coach Ali felt was on the slower side.
Asked how much of an advantage it would be during match days, Bhupathi said: “We will know about that on Saturday if the advantage played out for us or not. It’s been extremely cloudy and overcast in the last two days and that also is a factor into the conditions of the court. Today it’s sunny and hot so it’s a bit quicker. we don’t know what’s going to happen on Friday and Saturday.”
Italy will be without their top player Fabio Fognini but have two players in the top 50 — Marco Cecchinato (19), Andreas Seppi (37) — along with Matteo Berrettini (53), Thomas Fabbiano (85) and doubles world number 138 Simone Bolelli.
The Indian challenge will be spearheaded by Prajnesh who recently achieved a career-best ranking of 102 alongwith Ramkumar (133) who is good on grass. In doubles, Bopanna and Sharan clinched the Maharashtra Open last month in Pune.
“There is a belief that everyone can contribute to hopefully upset the Italians over the weekend.”
“But when we keep referring to the word ‘underdogs’ it’s just you know what’s put on the statistics and on paper and on the current rankings. That’s how the sport is. When a team is playing another team in any sport, one team is underdogs one team is favourites. We are going in as underdogs, that’s the bottom line,” Bhupathi maintained.
Asked whether the Italians have an advantage over the Indians in the doubles rubber, Bhupathi said: “Honestly, I think one of the last matches I played in my career, I lost to Bolelli and Seppi in Dubai, and they won the tournament. That was a (ATP) 500. They have got the experience. Bolelli won Grand Slams… one 500.”
India competed in its first Davis Cup in 1921 but has yet to win the Cup. India finished as runners-up three times (1966, 1974, 1987). India last played Italy in 1985 when the former won 3-2 in the first round. Overall, Italy lead the head-to-head count 4-1.
Police officer, three journalists held for extortion
Nasheman News : A police officer and three journalists were arrested here on Tuesday midnight for extorting money from a call centre owner. Cash totalling Rs 8 lakh was recovered from the police officer’s office, police claimed on Wednesday.
The police said that Manoj Pant, the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Sector 20 police station and his journalist facilitators — Udit Goel, Raman Thakur and Sushil Pandit — sought to extort money from the call centre owner against whom a case was filed in November 2018.
In order to provide relief to the call centre owner, a deal was reportedly finalized for “crores of rupees” and an advance of Rs 8 lakh was handed over to the SHO through the journalists who were caught red-handed by Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Krishna, his spokesman Manish Saxena said.
Pant carried out the raid after being tipped off about the racket, the spokesman said.
Additional SHO Jagvir Singh, who was found driving a Mercedes car, was suspended, added the spokesman.
POCSO slapped on Congress leader OM George for sexually offence
The Kerala Congress on Wednesday suspended OM George, the District Congress Committee (DCC) member from Wayanad, from primary membership of the party after the police registered a case under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against him for alleged sexual assault of a tribal girl.
George, who is currently absconding, is accused of sexually assaulting the minor girl, aged 17, for one-and-half years during the time she worked as a domestic help at his house.
According to reports, the girl, who has been shifted to a government shelter home, had tried to commit suicide last week. Her parents, who too worked at George’s house, approached the police when the girl narrated her ordeal to them.
The police registered a case against George under relevant sections of the POCSO on Tuesday after taking the statements of the girl and her family.
George has also been slapped with charges under Section 376 (rape) and under the SC/ST Act.
Reports say that the police are probing the girl’s mobile phone which they believe contains crucial details regarding the case.
George, who hails from Sultan Bathery, is a former Panchayat president. Reports say that he also tried to “settle” the case with the police. The girl’s parents also alleged a local Congress leader had tried to put pressure on them to withdraw the case and offered money.
Suspending George from the party membership pending inquiry, KPCC president Mulapally Ramachandran told reporters that Congress would not brook criminals in its ranks and will not protect any accused.
Some Congress leaders want the coalition to collapse.
If rumours are to be believed, then forces in both the Congress and BJP are working to bring down the coalition government and ultimately the pre-poll alliance.
Since May 2018, when the Congress-JD(S) coalition came to power, the BJP in Karnataka has been sorely disappointed for being unable to form a government, and time and again they’ve tried to poach MLAs and topple the government.
Now, once again, rumours are rife that the BJP is planning to pull off another coup and push for a no-confidence motion when the budget session begins on February 8. What’s intriguing is that several sources in the Congress say that many of the leaders within the party do not want the coalition to stand. “It’s not about retaining power now. It’s about a much larger threat the party is facing,” a Congress source said.S
According to insiders in the grand old party, several prominent leaders in the Congress are extremely unhappy about the Congress-JD(S) pre-poll alliance for the General Elections. Sources say that these leaders fear that this alliance would pave way for the JD(S) to “completely take over” their strongholds in Old Mysuru. In December last year, JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda wrote to AICC President Rahul Gandhi stating that the JD(S) would be willing to align with the Congress for the Lok Sabha elections only if the JD(S) is allowed to contest in 12 key constituencies. The former Prime Minister demanded that the tickets to the Mandya, Hassan, Mysuru-Kodagu, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapura, Shivamogga, Tumakuru, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru, Chitradurga, Raichur and Bidar segments be handed over to JD(S).
“These are also the areas where the Congress is extremely strong. So many prominent leaders from these MP constituencies will lose their vote bank if they are seen supporting the JD(S) candidate. There is an entire lobby of leaders who are fighting against this pre-poll alliance. The strategy is simple. If there is no coalition, then there will be no pre-poll alliance. Hence, they don’t mind if the party is not in power in the state. They want to retain their voter bases for the numerous elections to come,” a Congress source said.
On Monday, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy had also expressed his displeasure over Congress leaders “creating trouble” for the alliance. Kumaraswamy had also expressed his wish to step down as the CM if the Congress did not want to continue as a coalition partner.
“For so many years, the Congress and JD(S) were rivals and suddenly they want these leaders in key constituencies to share their vote bank with them. Why would they agree?” the source questioned.
Currently, there are 79 Congress MLAS, 37 JD(S) MLAs, one MLA each from KPJP (R Shankar) and BSP (N Mahesh) and one independent candidate (Mulbagal H Nagesh), who withdrew support for the coalition earlier this month. With 118 MLAs on its side, the coalition has a simple majority.
BJP sources say that the party has allegedly managed to convince six Congress legislators to resign ahead of the budget session. Sources in BJP and Congress say that six rebel Congress MLAs, including former Minister of Municipalities, Ramesh Jarkiholi, have been cooped up at resorts. Four MLAs are believed to be in Mumbai, one in Pune and the suspended Congress legislator JN Ganesh is allegedly cooling his feet at a resort in Goa.
If rumours are to be believed, then forces in both the Congress and BJP are working to bring down the coalition government and ultimately the pre-poll alliance. The question is – will the BJP succeed this time?
Pawan Kalyan not to attend all-party meeting called by TDP chief
Nasheman News : Actor-politician Pawan Kalyan on Tuesday announced that he will not attend the all-party meeting called by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu over the demand for special category status on Wednesday.
The Jana Sena chief in an open letter to Naidu expressed surprise over the government extending invitation on Tuesday evening for a meeting to be held on Wednesday.
Pawan said the meeting without giving sufficient time to the parties and without deciding the agenda would serve no purpose. “This gives rise to the suspicion that the meeting is being convened for political mileage,” he wrote.
The actor made it clear that Jana Sena remained committed for a joint struggle to achieve special category status and implementation of commitments made in Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. He said the party would join hands only if there was sincerity in the struggle.
Naidu on Tuesday decided to call an all-party meeting on Wednesday to discuss special category status and incomplete implementation of Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act.
The ruling Telugu Desam Party appears to be trying to bring the issue of special status to the centre-stage before the last Parliament session.
Stating that TDP is taking the Centre head-on over the issue of the state’s rights, Naidu told TDP leaders that all the parties should join hands with them in carrying forward this battle.
Anna launches hunger strike for Lokpal, Lokayuktas
Nasheman News : Veteran activist Kisan Baburao Hazare alias Anna Hazare on Wednesday launched a fresh hunger strike at his Ralegan-Siddhi village seeking Lokpal and Lokayuktas as promised by the government.
An aide said that carrying the tricolour, Hazare, 81, went around in a procession in the village with a large number of supporters and hoisted the national flag before starting the indefinite fast.
He also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day before launching the agitation.
Three days ago, Hazare had served an ultimatum to the Maharashtra government demanding the implementation of the Lokayukta in the state failing which he would launch his hunger strike.
Earlier, he addressed several letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to implement the Lokpal authority and said his communications were not acknowledged.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has initiated the process to bring the office of Chief Minister under the jurisdiction of the Lokayukta but Hazare said he will be on protest till it becomes a reality.
Besides these main demands, Hazare has also taken up the farmers causes including implementation of the M.S. Swaminathan Commission Report and related issues.
