TN must demand release of 7 convicts in Rajiv Gandhi case: Stalin
[Nasheman news] Chennai DMK chief M.K. Stalin on Thursday said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami must meet Governor Banwarilal Purohit and urge him to allow release of seven persons convicted for former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination.
Perarivalan, Murugan, Nalini, Shanthan, Ravichandran, Jayakumar and Robert Pyas have been in jail for naerly three decades after Gandhi was killed in a blast triggered by a human bomb in Sriperumbudur on May 21, 1991.
In a statement issued here, Stalin said the state cabinet had passed a resolution for the release of the seven and had sent the same to Purohit in September 2018.
The DMK leader said the Tamil Nadu cabinet had taken the decision as per the Supreme Court order and the Governor should have accepted the same.
“It is painful to note the Governor is keeping silent on the matter and not taking any action on the cabinet recommendation,” Stalin said.
Stalin said the Chief Minister is also keeping silent by not taking up the matter with Purohit.
He said it is not known whether the AIADMK had set conditions to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) relating to the release of the seven convicts; non construction of dam across Cauvery at Mekadatu by Karanataka; exemption for the state from NEET (common medical exam).
After announcing that AIADMK will align with parties who have done good for the state Palaniswami should at least demand the release of the seven prisoners first.
Stalin said Purohit should release the seven convicts under Article 161 of the Constitution.

Rapping is a celebrated form of music worldwide. It came up from the streets & was able to resonate with all sections of society. India too has had a rapping scene & 2 of them who are quite famous in this category are Divine & Naezy. Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy is loosely based on their lives & has managed to generate tremendous hype. The presence of Ranveer Singh & Alia Bhatt has also added to the buzz.
The scripted scenario of Gully Boy reveals the story of a timid slum dweller whose life changes thanks to his talent. Murad (Ranveer Singh) is a college student who lives in a slum in Mumbai’s Dharavi. He’s in a relationship with the fiery Safeena (Alia Bhatt), a medical student who comes from an orthodox upper caste Muslim family. There’s tension in Murad’s house as his father Shakir (Vijay Raaz) gets a second wife, much to the dismay of his mother Razia (Amruta Subhash). Meanwhile, one day an upcoming rapper MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi) performs in Murad’s college & he gets floored. After all, he’s always been interested in rapping. MC Sher one day asks aspiring performers to meet him & Murad jumps at this opportunity. MC Sher takes a liking for Murad & motivates him to rap publicly. Murad is hesitant at first but he performs for the crowd who give him thumbs up. MC Sher even gets him to shoot a video which becomes very popular. However, Murad is not able to pursue his passion full time. He is compelled to step into his father’s shoes & become a chauffeur after the latter fractures his leg. He also has a complex on account of his social status. What happens next forms the crux of the film.
Reema Kagti & Zoya Akhtar’s story is promising. The character of Murad is very well written & also the world around him. Many who had criticized Zoya for showing the world of the elite in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) & Dil Dhadkane Do (2015) would surely be surprised. Also the writers have ensured that the film doesn’t turn out to be just a story of a rapper. It speaks about passion, aspiration & also makes an important commentary on poverty, social strata, juvenile delinquency, polygamy etc. Reema Kagti & Zoya Akhtar’s screenplay is highly effective. A lot of research has gone into the film & it shows. Several sequences are powerful & they hit you hard. Even the humor comes out very well. Vijay Maurya’s dialogues further add to the impact as they are acidic. The poems of Murad are penned by Javed Akhtar & they have their own charm.
Zoya Akhtar’s direction is exemplary yet again & she proves that she is worthy of setting her film in diverse world & yet emerging victorious. However, the film has a few rough edges & one wishes she had taken care of it. The 2nd half is quite lengthy. In fact, it feels like one is watching a three hour long film. A few characters like Safeena & Sky (Kalki Koechlin) are interesting but they don’t have much to do & conveniently disappear in the middle. Also the tone & the theme of the film is such that it won’t appeal to audiences pan India. The film features scenes of rap battle where one is supposed to roast the opponent & get personal. Such scenes may put off a section of the audiences.
Gully Boy is not the usual entertainer & this becomes evident in the 1st ever scene itself. However, the goings on are very interesting & suck you into the world of these characters. The entry of Safeena adds to the fun & the sequence where she assaults Albina, a girl who shows interest in Murad, will bring the house down. Murad’s struggles & his bond with MC Sher is also well depicted. A few scenes are exceptionally directed like Murad’s 1st ever performance. Another scene that stands out in the 1st ever half is when Murad gets the idea of the song “Doori”in the car. Post interval, the interest dips a bit. The film gets stretched & also has far too many sub plots. The climax thankfully is when the film picks up beautifully. The film ends on a high note.
There are far too many songs in the film & none of them are conventional chartbusters, considering the theme of the film. But few of them stand out. “Apna Time Aayega”has got noticed & takes the film to another level. “MereGully Mein”is peppy while “Azadi”is riveting. “Doori”is quite touching. “SherAaya Sher”, played during MC Sher’s entry is decent. Background score is in sync with the film.
Jay Oza’s cinematography is magnificent & gives the film a fine look. Even in the finale, the lensman’s fine job adds to the effect. Arjun Bhasin & Poornamrita Singh’s costume are stylish & realistic. Manohar Verma & Sunil Rodrigues’ action is also quite real. The latter has choreographed Alia Bhatt’s action scene & it’s one of the film’s highpoints. Suzanne Caplan Merwanji’s production design is authentic. Nitin Baid’s editing is stylish but could have been crisper in the 2nd half. Ranveer Singh gets completely into the skin of his character. He is 10 years older than Murad in real life & yet he convincingly manages to essay the role of a college student. Even as a rapper, he seems like a pro & not even once does it feel that he’s acting for the part. Also watch out for the scenes where he’s playing 2nd fiddle to MC Sher in the 1st ever half. For a lead actor to do so is quite praiseworthy. Alia Bhatt is explosive to say the least. Her role would be loved & she’s so good that one wishes she had more screen time. Siddhant Chaturvedi makes a solid debut. He has a crucial part & would surely be talked about. Kalki Koechlin leaves a tremendous mark in a small role. Vijay Varma (Moeen) is satisfactory. Vijay Raaz is quite nice & makes an impact, especially in the pre – climax. Amruta Subhash is decent. Shrishti Shrivastava (Albina) is hilarious. Jyoti Subhash (Murad’s grandmother) makes her presence felt in a crucial scene in the 2nd half. The rest of the actor’s like Rahul Piske & Abdul Qadir Amin are fine.
On the whole, Gully Boy is a fun & moving entertainer that will surely resonate with the youth & multiplex-frequenting urban audiences.
At the box office, the 4 day weekend ensured that it emerged as a profitable venture for its makers.
Vadra questioned for over 3 hours in money laundering case
Nasheman News : Robert Vadra, brother-in-law of Congress President Rahul Gandhi, was on Wednesday questioned for over three hours by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case.
A senior ED official said: “We could question Vadra for only three-and-a-half hours as he complained of poor health.
“We have asked him to appear before us again on February 22 at 10.30 a.m.,” the official told media.
Vadra arrived at the ED office in central Delhi at 10.30 a.m. and was questioned till 2 p.m.
Outside, hundreds of Youth Congress workers raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ED.
On February 16, a Delhi court had extended Vadra’s interim bail till March 2.
This was the fourth time that Vadra, husband of Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been questioned in connection with the money laundering case.
The earlier quizzing took place on February 6, 7 and 9.
The case relates to the ownership of undisclosed assets abroad worth 1.9 million pounds, allegedly belonging to Vadra.
Vadra was also questioned on February 12 and 13 by the ED in Jaipur in connection with a land deal case in Bikaner, Rajasthan.
The ED on February 15 attached Vadra’s Sukhdev Vihar house in Delhi, a property worth Rs 4.43 crore. The house was in the name of Vadra’s company Sky Light Hospitality Pvt Ltd.
On February 2, the court granted Vadra interim bail till February 16 and asked him to join the investigation on February 6.
The ED also lodged a money laundering case against Vadra’s employee Manoj Arora after his role came up during an Income Tax Department probe in a 2015 anti-black money case involving absconding arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari.
The ED had alleged that Arora was aware of Vadra’s overseas undeclared assets and was instrumental in arranging funds.
Karnataka CM flexes is muscles
With the JD(S) and Congress yet to formalise a seat-sharing arrangement for the 28 Lok Sabha seats, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Tuesdaysaid the JD(S) were not beggars to be bullied by their alliance partner. “If the Congress has decided to give us three or five or seven seats, I would like to say that we are not beggars. I would like to clearly state this,” Deccan Chronicle quoted him as saying. The CM, who was responding to a query by reporters in Mysuru, added, “The Congress leaders have not discussed this with me, so I have not thought of it.”
Former CM Siddaramaiah, however, appeared to ease the tension. Reacting to the CM’s statements, Siddaramaiah, who was in Bengaluru at a Youth Congress meeting, said, “No one needs to beg from anyone. This is a coalition government and neither JD(S) nor the Congress is a beggar.’’
The decision to form a pre-poll alliance for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls were taken by the top brass of the two parties in a press conference just a week after Kumaraswamy won the floor test after days of political uncertainty in Karnataka in mid-2018. The press conference was addressed by CM Kumaraswamy, KC Venugopal, former CM Siddaramaiah, DK Shivakumar and Congress Lok Sabha leader Mallikarjun Kharge.
At present, after the recent bye-poll victories, the Congress has 10 seats while the JD(S) has two.
According to the political grapevine, former Prime Minister and JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda has agreed to lower his initial demand of 12 seats to 10 seats with the Congress maintaining that they will not give up any of the seats they currently hold.
With the JD(S)’s stronghold being limited to the Cauvery delta region of Old Mysuru, the party is assured of the seats in the Vokkaliga dominant regions. Other than that, they are seeking seats from Bidar, Vijaypura and Shimoga. With Deve Gowda touted to leave his stronghold of Hassan for his grandson Prajwal, the Congress might leave Bengaluru North seat, too, for the JD(S).

Renowned Hindi writer Namwar Singh mourned
Nasheman News : Leaders from across the political spectrum, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday condoled the demise of renowned Hindi author and critic Namwar Singh.
The 92-year-old, who was a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award passed away late on Tuesday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Trauma Centre.
“He gave a new direction to Hindi literature with his criticism,” Modi said.
Union Minister Rajnath Singh called the demise a “personal loss”. “Despite disagreements…, he knew how to respect and give people space. His passing away is an irreplaceable loss for the Hindi world and our society.”
Communist Party of India (Marxist) Sitaram Yechury said the author and critic will continue to hold a “very special place in the literary world. His work and contribution will be inspiring many generations to come”.
Swaraj India National President Yogendra Yadav said Namwar Singh gave a special place to criticism and also to the Hindi language.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat also condoled Singh’s death.
To dissolve the assembly or not, that is the question for the Goa BJP
Nasheman News : The death of former Deputy Chief Minister and incumbent BJP MLA Francis D’Souza and the continuing ill-health of two BJP MLAs, including Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, queered the legislative arithmetic for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and rekindled the debate on the assembly’s dissolution.
These factors, combined with fears of a backlash in the upcoming bypolls in two assembly constituencies, Shiroda and Mandrem, rendered vacant last year following the resignations of sitting Congress MLAs — who later joined the BJP — have added to the anxieties in the BJP camp.
The party seems to be grappling to comprehend an era beyond Parrikar, who is fighting advanced pancreatic cancer.
With the death of D’Souza — who was also suffering from cancer — on February 14, the legislative strength of the BJP is now at 13 MLAs, one short of the single largest party Congress.
This would become significant if any of the nine alliance MLAs (three each from Goa Forward and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and three independents), make good their repeated threats, both subtle and direct, of swapping ranks and attempt to topple the government.
For now, the ruling coalition members appear to be putting together a collective face, saying dissolution of the state assembly was only a media fantasy and that it was an unreal scenario as none of the legislators were keen on a mid-term poll, considering the political fluidity and the perceived backlash from the electorate.
“Dissolution? Somehow you are the media which is writing on this. I read an edit. It was creating a deja vu on dissolution. Look at the political reality at the moment. How many people can afford dissolution,” Agriculture Minister Vijai Sardesai asked while speaking to IANS.
Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho said that at a cabinet meeting chaired by Parrikar on Monday (Feb 19), dissolution of the assembly was not even discussed.
The Congress, the main opposition party in Goa, however sees the political scenario differently.
“This government never had the mandate to rule. This is an illegitimate government. The Governor has to dissolve the assembly and go for mid-term polls,” state Congress president Girish Chodankar said.
BJP sources said the party continues to be divided on the issue of dissolution. The choice for the party is to try to either ride the “positive wave” triggered by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led highly persuasive election machinery or sit pretty with the current legislative dispensation.
“The party cadre is facing a severe crisis in terms of morale in view of Parrikar’s illness as well as the constant infighting between allies, whose demands are unending The inability to resolve the mining crisis also means that we may face a setback in the mining belt,” a senior BJP leader said on condition of anonymity.
Mining was banned by the Supreme Court last February and repeated assurances by the BJP’s central and state leadership that efforts would be made to resolve the crisis have failed to fructify.
Another BJP leader said that riding piggyback on the Modi wave could be the best way out of the crisis, especially if Parrikar’s health further deteriorates.??”Currently, there is an air of uncertainty about what is going to happen. But if Parrikar is unable to guide us in the near future, there will be chaos. The best way out of the situation is to hold mid-term polls along with the Lok Sabha elections,” the BJP leader said.
The BJP has already initiated damage control, by bringing in its key troubleshooter, Satish Dhond, as an organising secretary, a key post in any BJP organisation, entrusted with the responsibility of acting as a bridge between the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the BJP, as well as to bring order to the party rank and file.
But even this move has been unable to tide over tenuous matters like the rebellion of former Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, who has vowed to defeat Dayanand Sopte, who joined the BJP last year after quitting as a Congress MLA and is likely to contest the bypoll in Mandrem, which Parsekar has traditionally represented.
Attacks on the BJP leadership by the party’s own MLAs, like Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo and Power Minister Nilesh Cabral over poor governance have also worsened matters in recent times.
