Hindu Mahasabha leader arrested
Uttar Pradesh police have arrested All India Hindu Mahasabha leader Pooja Pandey and her husband Ashok Pandey for recreating the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in Aligarh on January 30, his death anniversary. New agency reported that the two leaders of Hindu Mahasabha were arrested from Tappal in UP.
“No regrets. We have not committed any crime. We have used our constitutional right,” Pooja Pandey told reporters after her arrest in Aligarh.
Earlier, five people had been arrested for allegedly burning an effigy of Mahatma Gandhi. The arrested persons are accused of firing at the effigy of Mahatma Gandhi and setting it ablaze.
A video of the incident surfaced later on social media showing the accused shouting slogans against Mahatma Gandhi and praising his killer Nathu Ram Godse. The police had registered a case for promoting hatred and disturbing harmony in connection with the incident.
Accused Pooja Pandey is the national general secretary of the Hindu Mahasabha. In the video, she was seen firing at the effigy. She had justified assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in the video.
The Hindu Mahasabha had organised a function in Aligarh on the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi during which the members of the outfit garlanded Godse’s statue and distributed sweets. The outfit burnt the effigy of Mahatma Gandhi and said that the event would be organised every year the same way as Ravana’s effigy burning is held during Dusshera celebrations.
This is not the first time that the Hindu Mahasabha has praised Nathu Ram Godse for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Hindu Mahasabha leader Swami Pranavananda had announced in 2015 that statues of Godse would be installed in six districts of Karnataka. He had also called him a “patriot”.
This year is being celebrated as the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who was born on October 2, 1869. It was the theme of this year’s Republic Day Parade, which saw 22 huge tableaux dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi.
The death anniversary of Mahamta Gandhi is observed as the Martyr’s Day in India. The Hindu Mahasabha, however, treats the day as “Shaurya Divas” (Bravery Day) to honour Mahatma Gandhi’s killer Nathu Ram Godse, who was one of the early members of the outfit. Freedom fighter Madan Mohan Malaviya had founded the Hindu Mahasabha in 1915.
Crypto exchange may have lost $145 mn after CEO dies in India
Nasheman News : The death of Canadian entrepreneur Gerald Cotten, died due to complications with Crohn’s disease while travelling in India in December, has left a huge stash of cryptocurrencies locked off from the people who own them.
Quadriga, Canada’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange, said it’s unable to gain access to $145 million of bitcoin and other digital assets after the death of Cotten, its 30-year old CEO and Co-Founder.
Many of the digital currencies held by Quadriga are stored offline in accounts known as “cold wallets,” a way of protecting them from hackers. Cotten appears to have been the only person with access to the wallets, according to court documents cited by Canadian media and posted online by cryptocurrency news site CoinDesk, CNN reported.
The unusual case highlights the risks investors face looking after their assets in the thinly regulated industry.
Cotten’s death has plunged Quadriga into crisis and left it struggling to figure out how to refund more than 100,000 of its users. The company filed for creditor protection in the Nova Scotia Supreme Court on Thursday.
“For the past weeks, we have worked extensively to address our liquidity issues, which include attempting to locate and secure our very significant cryptocurrency reserves held in cold wallets. Unfortunately, these efforts have not been successful,” Quadriga said in a statement on its website.
Cotten’s widow, Jennifer Robertson, said in the affidavit posted online that the laptop that Cotten used to run the currency exchange is encrypted.
“I do not know the password or recovery key. Despite repeated and diligent searches, I have not been able to find them written down anywhere,” she said.
The company hired an investigator to see if any information could be retrieved but ongoing efforts have had only “limited success in recovering a few coins” and some information from Cotten’s computer and phone, BBC reported.
The Canadian High Commission in New Delhi told CNN that it was aware of Cotten’s death and had “provided consular assistance,” but declined to reveal further details.

Karnataka’s former CM Siddaramaiah issues another notice to 4 MLAs
Former Karnataka chief minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah has issued another notice to four dissenting party MLAs seeking an explanation before or after the Assembly Session.
Last month, Siddaramaiah had served notices to the four legislators who did not turn up at a Congress legislature party meeting in Bengaluru.
Speaking to the media at that time, Siddaramaiah said, “The situation is not like it is being portrayed in the media. Notice has been served to all four MLAs (Ramesh Jarakiholi, Mahesh Kamatihalli, B Nagendra and Umesh Jadhav). There is no problem to the government.”
Siddaramaiah also said three of the MLAs had responded to the notice with the exception of Umesh Jadhav, the MLA from Chincholi who has not replied yet.
The four Karnataka Congress MLAs on January 18 abstained from the CLP meeting, which decided to move rest of the 76 legislators to a resort. The meeting was convened by the party to assess whether its flock was intact amid speculation that some of the party MLAs had switched over to the BJP.
The Congress, which shares power with JD-S, has 80 MLAs in the 224-member Assembly, including the Speaker. Accordingly, 79 MLAs were expected to attend the CLP meeting held under the supervision of central leaders K C Venugopal and Mallikarjun Kharge.

“Slap On Bengal Government’s Face”: Sambit Patra
Senior BJP leader and spokesperson Sambit Patra on Tuesday said that the Supreme Court’s order on the Kolkata police chief was a “big slap” on the face of West Bengal government. Alleging that it was a political battle launched by the Chief Minister, Mr Patra said, “As far as Mamata Banerjee’s drama of dharna is concerned, finally, she had to eat her own words that ‘we were there to save the Constitution’…In fact, she has been exposed,” the BJP spokesperson told news agency .
“Ironically, the top court’s verdict was a big slap on the face of the West Bengal government and the kind of rhetoric politics that Mamata Banerjee was playing. People of this country are extremely intelligent and they will give a befitting reply in the general elections because one thing is aptly clear that the elections are between the gang of the corrupts and Mr Modi,” Mr Patra added.
Ms Banerjee on Tuesday ended her ‘save the Constitution’ dharna, which she had started on Sunday night after the CBI’s attempt to arrest Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar. Speaking to reporters, the Bengal Chief Minister claimed that the “dharna was to save our democracy, Constitution, IAS, IPS officers and agencies.”
“We started the dharna only after consulting all political parties and after that, they extended their full support,” Ms Banerjee said, adding that her government “got justice from one pillar of democracy, that is, the judiciary.”
The Chief Minister also said that the Central government’s claim that the Kolkata police chief had joined her in the protest was not true. “The truth is Rajeev Kumar never joined the protest. Is Rajeev Kumar their nightmare? Why are they so scared? As per protocol wherever PM, CM or any other minister or Governor goes, the police always has to be with them to give them security,” she said.
The home ministry yesterday asked the Bengal government to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Rajeev Kumar. In a letter addressed to the state chief secretary, the ministry cited “undisciplined behaviour and violation of All India Services (Conduct) Rules” by the officer. The Bengal government is not duty bound to follow the order but this move could further escalate the tension between the state and the Centre.
The Supreme Court has directed Rajeev Kumar to appear before the CBI in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam probe. The bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, however, said that no coercive step should be taken against him. The police chief has to appear before the CBI at a neutral venue in Shillong, the capital Meghalaya.

Case registered against Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, Karan Johar in Jodhpur
: A case has been registered in Jodhpur against India cricketers Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul, and Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar for the comments made towards women on talk show ‘Koffee with Karan’ that aired in December.
The duo were thereafter suspended by the Indian cricket board (BCCI) for the Australia ODI series and one New Zealand ODI. Thereafter, their bans have been lifted with Pandya returning to the fold to feature in New Zealand and KL Rahul for India A against England Lions.
The episode immediately drew ire on social media and was acted upon by the BCCI over Pandya’s remarks over women. The remarks were construed as ‘misogynistic’ and ‘racist’. Immediately, Pandya issued an apology on social media and then the two cricketers offered an official statement to the board.
Their suspensions were lifted on January 24 pending appointment of an ombudsman. Pandya played three ODIs against New Zealand taking four wickets and scoring 61 runs.
“Since the adjudication of all allegations of misconduct against any cricketer registered with, inter alia, the BCCI is required to be undertaken by the BCCI Ombudsman, whose appointment is pending directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, the CoA is the of the view that the interim suspension orders dated 11.01.2019 should be presently lifted with immediate effect,” the CoA said in a statement when lifting the ban. It added: “The above matter and decision has been taken with the concurrence of the Learned Amicus Curiae, Mr PS Narasimha. In view of the above, the suspension orders dated 11.01.2019 is immediately lifted pending appointment and adjudication of the allegations by the BCCI Ombudsman.”
Recently, Johar opened up on the controversy saying the issue has reached a stage where damage control isn’t possible.
“I have to say that I feel very responsible because it was my show, it was my platform. I invited them as guests and so the ramifications and repercussion of the show are my responsibility. I have had so many so many sleepless nights, wondering about how I can undo this damage, who is gonna listen to me. It’s now gone into a zone which is beyond my control.”
“The questions I asked to the two boys are the questions I ask everyone including women. When Deepika and Alia were on the show, I have asked them the same. I have no control over the answers that come my way. I have a control room of 16 to 17 girls. The show Koffee With Karan is entirely run by woman, I’m the only man there. None of them came up. Some thought he was wild, he was crazy, he’s crack, he’s mad. They said he’s funny. No one came and told me it was inappropriate, maybe you should reflect on it.” Said Johar to reporters.
The 46-year-old director rubbished reports of doing it for the TRP’s. He said, “It’s not about my career, It’s theirs. Perhaps things crossed boundaries, I apologise since it was my platform. I suppose that the boys have paid the price for it already.”
