Pollachi sex abuse: Key accused in prison

Nasheman News :  The Tamil Nadu Police on Monday lodged Thirunavukkarasu, the main accused in the Pollachi sexual abuse-cum-blackmail case, in a prison here.

The Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department (CBCID) got his custody on Friday and had interrogated him at an undisclosed location.

Thirunavukkarasu, Sathish, Sabarirajan, Vasanthakumar, all in their 20s, have been accused of sexually assaulting women in Pollachi town and filming the act to blackmail them for money or for physical submission over the past seven years.

Traders in Pollachi, which is in Coimbatore district, are planning a protest shutdown on Tuesday and a rally to demand a court-monitored probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Speaking to media, a trader said the shutdown and rally would see participation of different political parties and social organisations.

Rahane’s tactical acumen makes him special: RR coach

[Nasheman news] New Delhi They have been an integral part of India’s journey to the top of the ladder in Test cricket, but the next two months will see Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Ajinkya Rahane and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli fight it out as both teams look to win the 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).


While Kohli has led RCB for a while now, this will be Rahane’s second season as RR captain and head coach Paddy Upton is excited to have the calm and cool ‘Jinx’ (as Rahane is fondly called) at the helm of affairs.

Speaking to IANS, Upton made it clear that while comparisons were a part and parcel of any sport, both Rahane and Kohli were unique in their own ways and the way Jinx reads situations and his teammates, is what makes him succeed.

“You get players who are naturally big-pictured and strategically minded individuals and they make good on-field captains and then you get some who are very good people leaders and inspire other players. Each captain brings a different quality with their leadership which then needs to be balanced by other senior players. 

“Rahane has his own unique way of reading and understanding the game and dealing with people. His personality is very different from that of Virat Kohli so they have their own unique strengths,” he said.

Rahane was elevated to the captain’s role last season after Steve Smith was suspended, due to the Sandpaper Gate. This season will see the India batsman take charge for the second time. 

Asked if there would be added pressure on the captain since the team did well under him in 2018, Upton feels otherwise.

“I think it will actually be less pressure as the first time you have to adjust a lot more and now there is more comfort so I feel he will be more at home.”

Coming back to Smith, the former Australia skipper is already with the team and Upton is excited to have him not just as a solid bat in the middle-order, but also as someone who will keep helping the youngsters in the RR unit.

“Smith is a seriously good player. He knows how to pace an innings or set the chase. He will be hungry and looking to get back into the groove as early as possible. I feel he will be the perfect support for Rahane in helping with decision-making. Exciting to have him back in the middle-order,” he said.

Two other players who will be looking to play an integral role in this edition if RR are to go on and lift the trophy are Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler. Upton says that he is banking on them to make it count.

“Every player in the XI is important and then you have some who are match winners. Ben Stokes is one of them. We want to create a culture which will give him the best possible chance to fire as often as possible. This will be my first season with him.

“Jos has been very successful not just for England or in the IPL. He has done well for almost all teams he has played for. He is a class-player and he is going to have a minimum of 35 quality bowlers bowling at him and I don’t think they can keep him quiet,” he explained.

While RR has done well as a unit constantly, the trophy has eluded them post their maiden triumph in 2008 and Upton believes that the team will be working towards improving in all possible areas to increase the chances of lifting the coveted title.

“Each year we are looking to pay more attention to what we call the 1 per cent-ers. Just to be in constant search to do whatever possible to give us the best chance to succeed. Luck is a factor in T20 cricket and one individual can make the difference. Looking to constantly improve. We have some new plans and ideas so looking to be positive.

“We have got a slightly more older/senior players than previous years. But that isn’t by design. The philosophy is to give people opportunities to flourish won’t change,” he said.

A chat with the head coach of RR remains incomplete without a mention of team ambassador Shane Warne and Upton says he is looking forward to having the leg-spinner around. 

“I have never worked with Shane before. Looking to meet him and build the relationship so that we can extract the best out of that mind for the players,” he concluded.

Nitin Gadkari pays last respects to Parrikar

[Nasheman news] Panaji Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Monday offered his last respects to the mortal remains of late Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar at the state’s BJP headquarters here.

Gadkari arrived in the coastal state late Sunday night to negotiate with regional parties and independent MLAs for the formation of a new coalition government following Parrikar’s death earlier on Sunday due to advance pancreatic cancer.

But party sources said that no breakthrough was in sight yet, despite the meeting continuing until 4.30 a.m.

After a brief stop at the Bharatiya Janata Party headquarters, Parrikar’s body will be moved to a state-run arts and culture complex to allow members of the public to pay their last respects.

It will be later moved to Panaji’s Miramar beach for the final rites. 

BJP state President Vinay Tendulkar said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to arrive in Goa later on Monday, to offer his last respects to the former Defence Minister who served in Modi’s cabinet from 2014-17.

Chowkidar Narendra Modi, PM flaunts prefix

[Nasheman news] New Delhi A day after launching the “Main Bhi Chowkidar (I am a watchman too)” campaign on social media, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday changed the title of his Twitter account to “Chowkidar Narendra Modi”.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah followed with “Chowkidar Amit Shah” and tweeted: “The one who made cleanliness a moral value… he is called Chowkidar #MainBhiChowkidar. Say with all your heart #ChowkidarPhirSe (watchman again).” 

Shah’s remarks came after senior BJP leaders and Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, J.P. Nadda, Harsh Vardhan and Dharmendra Pradhan followed suit, changing their names similarly on Twitter accounts. 

“As Chowkidars of our nation, we are committed to creating a clean economy by using cashless financial transactions. The menace of corruption and black money has adversely affected us for decades. Time to eliminate these for a better future,” Goyal tweeted. 

In his tweet in Hindi, Nadda said: “Country changed, trust changed. A watchman was found in every person.”

“In comparison to 2013, mangrove cover increased by 293 sq km during the tenure of Narendra Modiji-led government. While 18 effluent treatment plants were set up to reduce river pollution, 44 real time water quality monitoring stations were set up on Ganga and its tributaries,” Harsh Vardhan tweeted. 

Suresh Prabhu also took to Twitter saying that “anyone who is doing his/her bit in getting India free of dirt, corruption and social-evils is a Chowkidar. #MainBhiChowkidar… Let’s join the movement and help in making India a well-governed, secure and prosperous nation.”

“As Chowkidars (watchmen) of our nation, we are committed towards safety and security of our people and their wealth. Elimination of middlemen and cleaning of economy has rattled all corrupts in every part of the country and today every thief is afraid of Chowkidar,” Dharmendra Pradhan tweeted. 

Goyal and Pradhan uploaded a video on their Twitter accounts with a message of #MainBhiChowkidar.

On Saturday, after Modi launched the “Main Bhi Chowkidar (I am a watchman too)” campaign, he posted a video with the same title on Twitter, saying: “Your Chowkidar is standing firm and serving the nation.”

The campaign counters Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s repeated attacks on Modi and his government over various alleged malhandling of economic and defence deals and situations, with the slogan – “Chowkidar Chor Hai (watchman is a thief)”.

“Five years ago, Chowkidar said he wanted to fight corruption. He said he wanted to make it a ‘Congress-mukt Bharat’. Today, the slogan of ‘Acche Din Aayenge’ has changed to ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’,” Gandhi has been repeating at rallies.

Gandhi latched on to the word “Chowkidar” as Modi, during the 2014 Lok Sabha campaigning, promised to work as a “Chowkidar” to guard people’s money and their trust once elected.

Priyanka kicks off 2019 LS campaign from Prayagraj

[Nasheman news] Pryagraj With less than a month to go for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress General Secretary and eastern Uttar Pradesh in-charge Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday kicked off her political campaign from here.

Priyanka Gandhi left Swaraj Bhawan, her ancestral home, and arrived at the Bade Hanuman Mandir, popular as ‘Lete huye Hanuman Mandir’ near Prayagraj Sangam.

She offered prayers at the temple, as well as to the river Ganga.

She then embark on her much anticipated boat ride from the Manaiya Ghat in Kachnar tehsil of Prayagraj district, according to party leaders.

On the first day of her three-day river ride from Prayagraj to the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she will cover the distance up to Sitamarhi ghat in Bhadohi district.

On her way from Manaiya to Sitamarhi, she will make her first pit stop at Dumduma ghat and interact with the villagers.

The 47-year-old younger sibling of Congress President Rahul Gandhi will also hold discussion with students onboard the boat that are being called “Sanchi baat”. 

Priyanka Gandhi is also supposed to meet the family members of a slain Central Reserve Police Force trooper, who died in the February 14 Pulwama attcak.

After leaving Dumduma ghat, the Congress leader will reach Sirsa ghat and then also visit the Lakshagrih ghat.

She was expected to arrive at Sitamarhi ghat in the evening.

On Sunday, she held marathon meetings with party workers at the Nehru Bhawan party’s state headquarters in Lucknow. Congress had won only two seats from the state in 2014.

Parrikar 18th Indian Chief Minister to die in office

[Nasheman news] New Delhi Manohar Parrikar, who passed away at his private residence on Sunday evening after a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer, became India’s 18th and Goa’s second Chief Minister to die in office.

Parrikar, 63, was the first Bharatiya Janata Party leader to be Goa Chief Minister. He headed the state from 2000-05 and 2012-14, before joining the Narendra Modi government as Defence Minister from 2014 before returned to state politics in 2017 to lead a coalition government.

Before Parrikar, 17 Chief Ministers including Tamil Nadu’s J. Jayalalitha, Jammu and Kashmir’s Sheikh Abdullah and Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, and Andhra Pradesh’s Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy died in harness.

Gopinath Bordoloi (Assam): The first Chief Minister of Assam , he worked closely with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to secure its sovereignty against China and Pakistan (as then East Pakistan bordered it) on the other before his death in 1950.

Ravishankar Shukla (Madhya Pradesh): A freedom fighter who laid special emphasis on the uplift of women and was a staunch opponent of illiteracy, purdah and dowry system, he became the first Chief Minister of the central state in 1956 but died two months into his stint. 

Sri Krishna Singh (Bihar): The first Chief Minister of Bihar, Sinha held the post right from when Congress won the elections under British rule in 1937 to 1961, save the World War II period. 

Bidhan Chandra Roy (West Bengal): An eminent freedom fighter and qualified doctor, he weas the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. After Independence, the Congress proposed his name as the state’s Chief Minister but he declined since he was more dedicated to his medical profession. However, on Mahatma Gandhi’s insistence, he accepted the position in January 1948 and held the post until his death in 1962.

Marotrao Kannamwar (Mahrashtra): The second Chief Minister of the newly-created state, he succeeded Y.B. Chavan in 1962 but died after a stint of only one year and four days.

Balwantrai Mehta (Gujarat): Succeeding Jivraj Narayan Mehta as Chief Minister on February 25, 1963, Mehta is the only Indian Chief Minister to become a war casualty. During the 1965 India-Pakistani War, his civilian aircraft was shot down by the Pakistan Air Force on September 19, 1965 as he was returning from a border area, killing him and all others aboard.

C. N. Annadurai (Madras/Tamil Nadu): Popularly known as ‘Anna’, he left an indelible mark not only on Tamil politics and society, but also national politics. The fifth and last Chief Minister of Madras from 1967 until 1969, he became the first Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu when the name of the state was changed but only held the post for 20 days. Annadurai, who had travelled to New York for medical treatment for cancer in September 1968 and underwent an operation, returned to Chennai in November and continued to attend official functions against medical advice. His health deteriorated further and he died in February 1969.

Dayanand Bandodkar (Goa): Popularly known as Bhausaheb Bandodkar, he was Goa’s first Chief Minister after liberation from Portuguese rule. He swept the polls in 1963, 1967 and in 1972 at the head of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and remained in power until his death in 1973.

Barkatullah Khan (Rajasthan): The only Muslim Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Khan died of a heart attack while in office, aged 53 years. He was Chief Minister from July 9, 1971 to October 11, 1973.

Sheikh Abdullah (Jammu and Kashmir): Known as “Sher-e-Kashmir”, Abdullah was the founder of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference and held the post of Chief Minister three times between Jammu and Kashmir’s accession to India and the early 1980s, amid a turbulent relationship with the Central government and several spells of imprisonment. He was in power when he died in 1982. 

M. G. Ramachandran (Tamil Nadu): Popularly known as MGR, he dominated Tamil films and politics. The first film actor to become a Chief Minister, he headed Tamil Nadu for 10 years from 1977, save a six-month interregnum in 1980 when his government was dismissed by the Centre, till his death in 1987.

Chimanbhai Patel (Gujarat): Replacing Ghanshyam Oza as Chief Minister in July 1973, he only served in office till February 9, 1974 being forced out of office by the ‘Nav Nirman’ movement on charges of corruption. He again became the Chief Minister on March 4, 1990 as a part of the V.P. Singh-led National Front but later switched over the the Congress, and continued in power till his death on February 17, 1994.

Beant Singh (Punjab): Credited with stamping out militancy in Punjab after becoming Chief Minister in 1992, he was assassinated when a suicide attack at the Secretariat building in Chandigarh on August 31, 1995.

Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy (Andhra Pradesh): Popularly known as YSR, Reddy was a two-time Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh (2004-2009). However, early in his second stint, his helicopter crashed in a dense forest in Chitoor district on September 3, 2009. 

Dorjee Khandu: He became the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh replacing Gegong Apang in 2007. He was again sworn as Chief Minister in October 2009 but died on April 30, 2011 when the helicopter in which he was returning to Itanagar from a trip to Tawang crashed.

Mufti Mohammad Sayeed (Jammu and Kashmir): A two-time Chief Minister, Sayeed, who led the first coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir involving the BJP, died on January 7, 2016. India’s first Muslim Home Minister in the V.P. Singh government, Sayeed became Chief Minister for the first time in 2002-05 in a coalition government with the Congress. In his second stint, he allied with the BJP to become the chief minister.

J. Jayalalitha (Tamil Nadu): Jayalalithaa, who died on December 5, 2016 in her fifth stint as Chief Minister, held the post for over 14 years between 1991 and 2016.

Affectionately called “Amma” by fans and party activists, Jayalalithaa became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 1991. She again returned to power in 2001 but had to step down after her name figured in a court case. After being cleared, she took over again in 2002 and ruled till 2006.

She wrested the state from the DMK in 2011, but had to step down in September 2014 after being convicted in a corruption case by a Bengaluru court. Acquitted, she took back the reins in May 2015 and led her party back to power in 2016. When she was admitted to Apollo Hospitals in Chennai on September 22, 2016, no one believed that she would come out of it in a coffin.

Be fearless, all will be good: Indira told Priyanka

Nasheman News :  Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is in Uttar Pradesh campaigning for the party, is drawing inspiration from her grandmother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who taught her to be fearless.

“Sitting in the courtyard of Swaraj Bhawan, the room is visible where my grandmother was born,” she tweeted late on Sunday, while spending sometime in the 19th century mansion here. The ancestral home was owned by her great-great grandfather, Motilal Nehru. 

The 47-year-old recalled how her grandmother often rocked her to sleep with the bedtime story of Joan of Arc, a peasant girl from medieval France, who believed God chose her to lead France to victory in its Hundred Years War with England. She succeeded and is honoured as the Maid of Orleans.

“I still have those words imprinted in my heart. Become fearless and all will be good,” she added.

Party President Rahul Gandhi appointed his younger sibling as the eastern in-charge of Uttar Pradesh on January 23. 

The fifth generation of the Nehru-Gandhi family still at the helm of the party is striving hard to win the Hindi heartland state.

On Monday, Priyanka Gandhi will embark on a Prayagraj to Varanasi (Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency) boat ride on the river Ganga, making small pit stops and meeting crowds on the banks.

Modi continues to rule popularity charts despite slight dip: VOTER tracker poll

Nasheman News :Even a fortnight after the air strike by Indian Air Force fighter jets on terror camps in Pakistan’s Balakot, Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to dominate the popularity charts despite a dip in his rating from the peak witnessed during the first week of March, but his distant rival Rahul Gandhi has shown only marginal signs of recovery.

The latest ‘state of the nation’ tracker poll by CVOTER-IANS based on the data collected till March 14 showed that Modi’s rating has begun to slide from the high of around 60 per cent seen on March 4, 5, 6 and 7 to come down slightly to around 56.

In contrast, Rahul Gandhi’s rating, which had gone down to less than 3 per cent in the period when Modi’s had surged, has improved marginally to around 7 per cent though it remains much below around 20 per cent support he enjoyed in his best days in January 2019.

In terms of satisfaction with the Prime Minister’s work, there is not much change with over 50 per cent remaining in the very satisfied category. Though his net approval rating in the range of 60s in the first week of March has come down to 56 on March 14.

The gap between the two leaders has come down below 50. 

A majority of the respondents (over 40 per cent) continue to believe that Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) can run better coalition.

The findings are based on a sample size varying between 4,000 and over 6,000.

BCCI agrees to work with NADA for 6 months

Nasheman News : The Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) met ICC chairman Shashank Manohar in Mumbai on Monday and decided that the Indian board will work with the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for the next six months on a trial basis.

Speaking to media , sources in the know of developments said that the board was willing to work with NADA for a period of six months, but the agency would be allowed to collect only 10 per cent samples for testing.

“The Indian board has agreed to try and work with NADA for the next six months and then decide on the road ahead. 

“Trust has been an issue and that needs to be gained with quality work from the agency. The agency will collect only 10 per cent samples for testing. 

“The board feels that with the 2022 Commonwealth Games in sight, India would like to field the women’s team in the event at Birmingham and this is a move aimed at that direction,” the source said.

While the International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to remain compliant to the WADA directives, the BCCI had reservation on dealing with NADA.

ICC CEO David Richardson in February spoke on the need to get the differences between the BCCI and NADA sorted. 

“We are trying to help the BCCI sort out the issue with WADA and NADA. We think cricket should be in the 2028 Olympics, but it’s not going to happen unless we are a unified sport.

“At this stage, we need to convince the BCCI that it is a good thing for cricket to be in the Olympics from all aspects,” he had said.

However, the BCCI officials present at the last ICC chief executive meeting had made it clear that WADA must name a different testing agency as they did not trust NADA, thanks to mistakes the agency had made.
