[Nasheman news] Jammu The Jammu-Srinagar highway was restored for one-way traffic on Tuesday after it remained closed for several hours, a traffic official said.
Landslides at Khanpora outside Bannihal blocked the highway on Monday and it was not until 10 p.m. that the clearance operation was over.
“All stranded vehicles were then allowed to move to decongest the road. Traffic will move one-way from Srinagar to Jammu today,” he added.
The nearly 300-km long highway has been presenting serious challenges to the authorities with the Ramsoo-Ramban remaining particularly vulnerable to landslides and shooting stones.

Shun BJP-inspired TV debates, Tejashwi to opposition parties
[Nasheman news] Patna Bihar opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav here on Monday appealed all the opposition parties to not participate in debates on television channels, which are promoting the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“We appeal to all the political parties in the opposition and the conscientious voices in the public sphere not to participate in the shouting matches held in the name of debate by certain television channels and their anchors, and to refuse to be complicit in their campaign of distortion and deceit.
“The conspicuous absence of facts and voices from the opposition shall not allow them to continue with their pre-scripted debates and discussions,” the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader said in a letter to leaders of 24 opposition parties.
Yadav said: “I believe if we can take a united and collective call on this, it shall be of great help to the cause we are fighting for.”
“We believe news channel studios have been seized by fascist tendencies and that no rational debate is possible at these theatres of death and doom,” he said.
EVMs can’t be hacked or manipulated: Ex-CEC
[Nasheman news] Kolkata Former Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla has given a thumbs up to the EVMs to be used in the upcoming general elections, arguing that the equipment cannot be hacked or manipulated as they are not accessible through external machines and are kept under the surveillance of senior government officials.
“I firmly believe that EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) are very good machines and cannot be manipulated. The moment we let our NRIs to vote, it has to be a computerised machine without firewalls and then EVMs can be breached.
“But at the moment EVM is like a desktop calculator which is conditioned to perform just two or three functions. So it cannot be hacked,” Chawla said at the Kolkata launch of his book “Every Vote Counts: The Story of India’s Elections” here.
“I do not think anyone can in anyway change the EVM chips after the votes are cast and change them with other ones. No one can reach those chips using any other external machines.
“Also in the coming elections every single machine will be connected to the VVPAT, which makes the whole system more accountable,” he said.
Chawla said the Supreme Court should give its verdict regarding the opposition parties’ demand to ensure that 50 per cent EVM results are matched and cross-checked with voter verifiable paper audit trails (VVPATs) before the declaration of the result.
Referring to the electoral system in the US, he said unlike them India has a system of accountability where everybody working in elections are responsible government servants.
“Unlike the American electoral system, where there are different counties who have volunteers coming to conduct the election from the outside, we do not have such a system.
“We have a Chief Electoral Officer in every state, who ensures that every single EVM machine is kept in the custody of the District Magistrates, all of whom are IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officers. The machines go to the polling stations directly from there,” he said.
The former CEC, however, refused to comment on the Election Commission’s decision to hold polling in seven phases in certain states like Bengal and Bihar, pointing out that the challenges faced by the EC in a particular election cannot be assessed from the outside due to the ever changing scenarios and increase in the number of electorate every year.
Australia beat India in 4th ODI, level series
[Nasheman news] Mohali Australia rode a powerful batting effort to defeat India by four wickets in the fourth On-Day International (ODI) and level the five-match series at 2-2, here on Sunday.
Chasing a formidable target of 359 runs, Peter Handscomb’s maiden ODI century and half-centuries from Usman Khawaja and Ashton Turner took the visitors past the line with 13 balls to spare.
The Australians chase was off to a rocky start as Aaron Finch was bowled by Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumnar in the very first over.
Jasprit Bumrah dealt another blow when he sent back Shaun Marsh in the fourth over with an excellent fuller length delivery that uprooted the off-stump.
However, that was destined to be the only bit of celebration for the Indian players. The capacity crowd at the IS Bindra Stadium witnessed laying of the foundation for a successful chase by Khawaja and Handscomb with a 192-run stand in 178 balls.
Handscomb scored 117 runs off 105 deliveries, hitting eight boundaries and three sixes along the way. Khawaja’s 91 runs came off 99 balls and included seven hits to the fence.
Bumrah finally broke the partnership when Khawaja tried to pull a short pitched delivery just outside the off-stump only to see Kuldeep Yadav latch on to the top edge at fine leg.
Although the hosts claimed a couple of more wickets over the next eight overs, Turner smashed a quickfire half-century lower down the order to turn the match decisively in Australia’s favour.
The all-rounder remained unbeaten on a breezy 84 with five boundaries and six hits into the stands studding his 43-ball stay at the crease.
Bumrah was the only Indian bowler who could trouble the Australian batsmen with figures of 3/63 in his 8.5 overs.
Earlier, India rode scintillating knocks from openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan to post a mammoth 358/9.
Both Dhawan (143 off 115) and Rohit (95 off 92) were in brilliant touch right from the start and also recorded the highest opening stand (193) for India against Australia. The duo hammered every visiting bowler before Rohit fell, five short of his hundred.
But Dhawan maintained his aggressiveness, taking every bowler to cleaners.
The Indian openers started cautiously before they accelerated the innings to race away to 55 runs in just 9.2 overs. The duo seemed brutal as most bowlers were hammered to every part of the park and lifted the team to 100 runs in 17.2 overs.
Continuing their sensible and destructive play, the duo took India near the 200-run mark before pacer Jhye Richardson came with a big breakthrough. He sent back a well-settled Rohit in the 31st over.
Rohit’s knock contained seven boundaries and two sixes.
Dhawan, however, continued attacking the Aussies as India crossed the 250-run mark in next six overs. Pat Cummins gave his side some respite as he bowled out Dhawan in the 38th over.
India lost skipper Virat Kohli (7 off 6) with the scorecard reading 266/3.
In the last 10 overs, stumper Rishabh Pant (36 off 24), Lokesh Rahul (26 off 31) and Vijay Shankar (26 off 15) made some valuable contributions before the lower order fell like a pack of cards. But by that time India was able to post a mammoth target.
For Australia, Cummins bagged five wickets, leaking 70 runs, while Richardson scalped three for 85 runs.
Brief scores:
Australia: 359/6 in 47.5 overs (Peter Handscomb 117, Usman Khawaja 91, Ashton Turner 84 not out; Jasprit Bumrah 3/63) beat India: 358/9 (Shikhar Dhawan 143, Rohit Sharma 95; Pat Cummins 5/70) by four wickets.

He said that the three day meet of ABPS reviewed various activities of the organisation and discussed contemporary issues.

The Election Commission has allowed enrollment of transgender persons with gender written as “Others” in the electoral rolls since 2012. The number of electors enrolled as “others” gender is 38,325.
The poll panel said that parliament has amended the Representation of the People Act, 1950, allowing enrollment of Indian citizens living overseas as electors.

The Lok Sabha elections will be held in 1,035,918 polling stations across the country compared to 928,000 set up during the last Lok Sabha election in 2014.
Modi, in a tweet after the declaration of poll schedule, hoped for a record turnout.
“The festival of democracy, Elections are here. I urge my fellow Indians to enrich the 2019 Lok Sabha elections with their active participation. I hope this election witnesses a historic turnout. I particularly call upon first time voters to vote in record numbers,” he said.
BJP-led NEDA will win 19-21 seats in Northeast: Himanta
[Nasheman news] Guwahati Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said the BJP and its allies will win between 19 and 21 seats out of the Northeast’s 25 Lok Sabha seats.
He also said the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will win the Lok Sabha polls with a better margin than in 2014.
Assam’s 14 constituencies will see polling in three phases on April 11, 18 and 23. Manipur and Tripura, which have two seats, will vote in two phases on April 11 and 18. Meghalaya (two seats), Nagaland (one), Arunachal Pradesh (two), Mizoram (one) and Sikkim (one) will go to the polls on April 11.
“There are 25 Lok Sabha seats in the Northeast. I think the BJP and its partners, who are members of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), will win 19-21 seats. In Assam, the BJP and its allies are going to win between 9 and 11 seats,” Sarma told media persons on the sidelines of an event in Bokakhat.
The BJP’s agenda for the Lok Sabha polls will be identity and development, he said.
The senior BJP leader, who was instrumental in ensuring the saffron victory in Assam and other noertheastern states, also hinted that he might contest the Lok Sabha polls.
“It is up to the party. If the party gives ticket, I’ll contest the polls,” Sarma said.
He refused to comment on the BJP forming alliance with other parties in Assam, saying that only state unit President Ranjit Dass could comment on the matter.
In the Northeast, the BJP is in power in Assam, Manipur, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh, and a coalition partner in the National Peoples’ Party-led government in Meghalaya and the National Democratic Progressive Party-led government in Nagaland.
In recent times, the BJP has faced some setback in the Northeast as different political parties and organisations have opposed its move to pass the contentious Citizenship Bill in the Lok Sabha.
While its alliance partner in Assam, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), has snapped its ties with the BJP due to the controversial bill, several other allies of the NEDA, including NPP, have threatened to quit the alliance if the bill is turned into an act.
The bill finally elapsed after the BJP failed to pass it in the Rajya Sabha during the previous Parliament session.
Strict monitoring of cash transactions at Goa casinos ahead of polls: Police
[Nasheman news] Panaji With the Model Code of Conduct in place for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and assembly bypolls, the Goa Police on Sunday said that they will be strictly monitoring gambling operations in the coastal state, including in casinos.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Rajesh Kumar said that there would be strict vigil of cash transactions at Goa’s casinos, which have been accused of money laundering by the Opposition and civil society.
“… we have laid more emphasis on cracking down on crimes like matka, gambling, narcotics…” he told reporters here.
He also said that casino operators will have to ensure their patrons have a PAN card, especially while making cash transactions.
“There are laid-down guidelines for casinos… If someone is going with cash, he should have a PAN card and whether the PAN card is being recorded there (at the casino’s end). Whatever norms there are will be enforced,” he added.
There are six offshore casinos and about nine onshore casinos operating from the state’s numerous coastal resorts.
Elections to Goa’s two Lok Sabha constituencies and bypolls to three assembly seats will be held on April 23, the Election Commission announced on Sunday.
Opposition parties hail LS poll dates, say voters will oust Modi government
[Nasheman news] New Delhi Opposition parties, including the Congress, on Sunday welcomed announcement of Lok Sabha election schedule and said the poll outcome will see the Narendra Modi government out of power.
However, the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal expressed its dissatisfaction over the Election Commission announcing a seven-phase poll for the state, saying the staggered elections would put pressure on the people.
Congress leader K.C. Venugopal said the Congress and the Opposition were united and confident and would defeat the Narendra Modi-led NDA.
“This government hasn’t delivered on any of its poll promises, including Rs 15 lakh in each bank account, jobs to two crore youths every year, security to women, increasing income of farmers,” he said.
The government is desperately trying to cover up its failures “through fake propaganda, event management and diversionary tactics”, the Congress leader said.
“Time for change is here. This government has divided the people of the country through the divisive policies and communal strategies. The Congress will expose its failures and put forward ideas for a new India,” he said.
“We are confident that this democratic process will dethrone this anti-democratic and dictatorial Modi government from the power”.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said people of Delhi will vote for giving full statehood to Delhi and not for choosing a Prime Minister and will elect the Aam Aadmi Party candidates on all the seven seats.
He also said time had come to throw out “the most dictatorial government.”
“Ultimately back to we the people — the real power of our democracy. Time to throw out the most dictatorial and anti-federal govt in the history of India. Time to seek answers on demonetisation, jobs, destruction of traders and brotherhood among different communities,” he said in a tweet.
BSP leader Mayawati welcomed the poll schedule and said people will vote to throw the Modi governent out.
“Crores of poor, labourers, farmers, women, youth, etc, participate in great strength in polling. Respecting them, free, fair and peaceful polling is utmost necessary.
“The anti-poor and pro-capitalist Modi government’s functioning disturbed peace and tranquillity, causing unrest and anger among the masses. India’s 130 crore peace-loving people certainly deserve a better government. The new government must honour the Constitution, respect democratic values and care for sarvasamaj,” she said in tweets.
Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav said it was not merely a poll announcement but a declaration of the big change that is going to come about in the country soon.
CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury said the model code of conduct had come into force with announcement of general elections and it would end the “unfair use of government resources by the Modi government”.
Yechury said secular, democratic India is confident that the Election Commission (EC) will conduct free, fair and safe elections to ensure a smooth transition to the next government.
In a series of tweets, he also said there were serious concerns over funding enabled by “opaque electoral bonds” brought in by this government and excessive spending by the ruling party and it is important that this is closely monitored and the integrity of the electoral process is maintained.
“In Bengal, large-scale violence and intimidation in past few elections has been disturbing. The EC must pay special attention to ensure that the destruction of democracy, as it happened in local elections, is not repeated. Sanctity of each voter’s franchise is what preserves our Republic,” he said.
On Jammu and Kashmir, Yechury said it is perplexing how the security situation in the state was good enough to conduct Lok Sabha elections, but not for assembly elections, which are also due. “Is there a diabolical motive?” he wondered.
In Kolkata, senior Trinamool leader and state minister Firhad Hakim also questioned the holding of polls during Ramadan, when Muslims fast during the day. Ramadan will fall in May-June this year.
“Whether the elections are held for five phases, or seven, or 14, that doesn’t matter, because our leader Mamata Banerjee has a place in the people’s hearts,”: he said.
