Caste to play key role in remaining 41 LS seats in UP
Lucknow, May 3 : Crucial caste factor will play an important role in the 41 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh which will be covered in the next three phases of polls.
BJP vs SP-BSP alliance would be intense in this phase though in certain places, Congress could play a vital role in dampening the spirits of both the BJP and the opposition alliance.
Next three phases will witness elections in VIP constituencies like Amethi, Rae Bareli, Varanasi and Azamgarh from where Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Narendra Modi and Akhilesh Yadav are in fray.
There are other VIP constituencies like Gorakhpur where prestige of Chief Minister is at stake or Kushinagar from where RPN Singh of Congress is contesting. Even the state president of BJP Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey is seeking a re-election from Chandauli and Faizabad, the epicenter of Hindutava campaign, in the last three phases.
All eyes will also be on Menaka Gandhi who is contesting from Sultanpur after swapping seats with her son Varun, who is BJP candidate from Pilibhit.
The aura of these leaders or constituencies notwithstanding it is the caste which is likely to give a bigger challenge to the BJP in the remaining phase of elections in Uttar Pradesh.
In 2014 the BJP and its ally ? Apna Dal ? won 38 of the 41 seats that will go to polls in last three phases.
The three seats opposition won include– Rae Bareli and Amethi ? won by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi respectively, and Azamgarh- from where Mulayam Singh Yadav won hands down.
In the electoral history, 2014 elections can be termed as an aberration because the country swayed by Modi wave voted in favour of BJP obliterating the caste line which is quite prominent in central and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
“It is the caste which decides the voting pattern in Uttar Pradesh. The political parties too field candidates on caste lines despite that fact that caste system is a taboo as per our constitution,” Dr Nomita P Kumar of Giri Institute of Development Studies said here on Friday.
She has carried out a study on election pattern of 2014 polls and said that collective vote percentage of opposition parties is much more than the vote BJP polled in last three phase. In phase 5 BJP polled 40.8 per cent votes while the coalition got 52.9 per cent votes. Others got 6. 3 per cent votes.
In the fifth phase, which will be held on May 6, constituencies like Dhaurahra, Sitapur, Mohanlalganj, Lucknow, Raebareli, Amethi, Banda, Fatehpur, Kaushambi, Barabanki, Faizabad, Bahraich, Kaiserganj and Gonda will go to polls.
“The scenario was no different in phase 6 of 2014 polls when BJP polled 38.3 per cent votes, which is less than it polled in phase 5 but others poll percentage got up to 9.2 per cent. The coalition vote percentage, however, remained intact which is 52.5 per cent,” Dr Kumar said.
The sixth phase election is on May 12 and constituencies like Sultanpur, Pratapgarh, Phulpur, Allahabad, Ambedkar Nagar, Shrawasti, Domariyaganj, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Lalganj, Azamgarh, Jaunpur, Machhlishahr and Bhadohi will go to polls.
Dr Kumar said that last and seventh phase was most productive for the BJP in 2014 because it got 43.9 per cent votes, marginally more than opposition alliance which got 44.1 per cent votes.
The constituencies like Varanasi, Gorakhpur and Kushinagar will be among 13 constituencies that will go to polls on May 19.
“In this scenario, the BJP faces a tough challenge from opposition in the last three phases of election because the caste will play a dominant role,” she said.

Congress leaders meeting with Sumalatha – Cheluvaraya Swamy
Bengaluru, May 3: Responding to reports of some former Congress legislators including Cheluvaraya Swamy and Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda participating in a dinner party with Sumalatha on April 30 and angry reaction to it by some JD(S) leaders, former chief minister and chairman of coalition government’s coordination committee, Siddaramaiah, said he would like to get to know why the meeting took place. He said there is nothing wrong or serious if it was an informal meeting.
At the same time, one of the participants in the meeting, former minister and Congress leader, Cheluvaraya Swamy, claimed that recording of the video of a few friends meeting over a dinner and releasing the footage to the media is a serious offence. He asked the city police to investigate the incident in all seriousness. He was addressing a press conference he had convened in the city after the video of him and other leaders of his party joining Sumalatha Ambareesh for dinner in a hotel having been aired by some television channels, on Thursday May 2.
“We did not commit a crime in joining together. We went to the party as we could not attend the birthday party hosted by our friend from Mandya, Sachidananda. Sumalatha also came there, and we have no right to ask her to go away. We are not saying that Kumaraswamy got it released by influence. But can CCTV footage reach the media without any influence and pressure?” he wondered.
Cheluvaraya Swamy also said that evidences to complain against him and other Congress leaders have been put together by vested interests. “Let us see how long Kumaraswamy can restrain the Congress. We are followed by intelligence officials everywhere. Are we terrorists?” he questioned.
He asked the chief minister not to worry about the said meeting, as officials and their wives have campaigned for Nikhil for the first time in Mandya’s history during the election. He said that in tune with the JD(S) leaders’ wishes, he and his friends did not work for the JD(S) candidate’s victory. He pointed out even the district in-charge minister did not have the courtesy to talk to him and seek support. He clarified that he and his group did not campaign for Sumalatha and instead, always asked people to vote for a candidate of their own choice.
He said that Kumaraswamy had not invited him and other Congress leaders to the dais when announcing the candidature of his son. “Instead, Kumaraswamy accused us of stabbing from behind. How can we campaign for such a person? Why should be maintain distance from Sumalatha even after the election is over?” he wanted to know.
Bank’s intentionally destroyed Gitanjali Gems : Mehul Choksi Lawyer
Lawyer of now-defunct Gitanjali Gems’ owner Mehul Choksi on Thursday said that state-owned Punjab National Bank had intentionally “destroyed” the brand in an attempt to divert attention from their own mistakes.
Alleging missteps on the part of PNB, the lawyer said, “Gitanjali Gems was cynically destroyed by the PNB in an attempt to divert attention from their own wrong-doings.”
Citing the credentials of the brand he added, “With the revenue of over Rs 12,000 crore, the debt-to-EBITDA ratio maintained by the Gitanjali was among the best in the industry. Notwithstanding the company’s strong balance sheet and a stellar track record of loan repayments, in February 2018, prompted by allegations by Punjab National Bank, investigating agencies raided and seized Gitanjali assets.”
He further said that several entreaties on the part of the brand’s promoter Mehul Choksi fell on deaf ears.
“The one thing I want to ask everyone who has accused me is even if I were guilty, why did no one even try to save Gitanjali, a company with Rs 12000 crore of annual turnover, 6,000 employees and countless honours in its name?” promoter of the brand Mehul Choksi said.
Mehul Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are key accused in Rs 13,000-crore Punjab National Bank fraud case. They fled the country a year ago.
Choksi was granted citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda on January 15, 2018.

Chandrayaan-2 will look for specific minerals on moon’s surface ISRO chief
Former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair said India’s second lunar mission Chandrayaan-2, which is scheduled to be launched between July 9 and 16, will look for specific minerals on the surface of the moon.
Speaking to media, Nair said, “Chandrayaan-2 is going to be an exciting mission as far as the Indian space programme is concerned. In 2008, we had sent our first satellite to the moon successfully. It has collected a lot of information about the surface of the moon, its mineral contents and so on. Also, we had the opportunity to place the Indian national flag on the surface of the moon. “
Elaborating on Chandrayaan-2, he said, “There were a lot of complexities associated with this mission. Since the development of the system is complete, we are ready for the mission. More importantly, it is important to carry a rover and make it land on the surface of the moon and then move around for about 300-500 meters and collect samples from the surface of the moon.”
ISRO on May 2 said the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLVMKIII) will carry three modules of this lunar mission- Orbiter, Lander (Vikram) and Rover (Pragyam).
“All the modules are getting ready for Chandrayaan-2 launch, with an expected Moon landing on September 06, 2019,” ISRO said in a statement.
ISRO had initially planned to launch the mission in April this year.
“The Orbiter and Lander modules will be interfaced mechanically and stacked together as an integrated module and accommodated inside the GSLV MK-III launch vehicle,” read a statement issued by the Department of Space.
“The Rover is housed inside the Lander. After launch into earthbound orbit by GSLV MK-III, the integrated module will reach Moon orbit using Orbiter propulsion module. Subsequently, Lander will separate from the Orbiter and soft land at the predetermined site close to the lunar South Pole. Further, the Rover will roll out for carrying out scientific experiments on the lunar surface. Instruments are also mounted on Lander and Orbiter for carrying out scientific experiments,” the statement further read.
Chandrayaan-2 comes 10 years after ISRO launched its first lunar mission, Chandrayaan-1, in 2009. The mission included a lunar orbiter and an impactor but didn’t include a rover like Chandrayaan-2.
