Jaitley alleges Oppn paying ‘lip sympathy for federalism’ & destroying it as well
New Delhi, Mar 30 : Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday said while a big political row was sparked off in Karnataka over Income Tax raids, the fact of the matter was only the ?Nephew? of a Minister was searched.
The BJP senior leader accused the opposition, including the Congress and JD-S in Karnataka and Trinamool Chief Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal of paying ”lip sympathy for federalism” and destroying it whenever the opportunity arises.
”Federalism is not merely the Rights of the States. Indian federalism entails India as a ?Union of States?. The Rights of the Union are equally important,” Mr Jaitley said in his blog.
On March 28 in Bengaluru, JD(S) and Congress leaders, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and Ministers of the State, assembled outside the Income Tax Office to protest against income tax searches alleging that ministers had been searched.
The best evidence they could provide for was that the ?Nephew? of a Minister was searched.
The tax authorities in Bengaluru had issued a press statement which categorically said that no MP, MLA, Minister was searched.
Mr Jaitley said the search was not against any politician or even political workers. The search was only against Contractors and Engineers of the PWD Department of the State.
He said the disproportionality of the reaction of the Congress and the JD-S ”raises a needle of suspicion”.
”There is a lurking suspicion due to the disproportionality of the reaction that the protestors were more concerned with regard to the ?substance? of the search. Did they have a vicarious pecuniary interest in the substance?
”Is it a case where the PWD Department pays the Contractors, the Engineers being the collecting agents and the principals of the agents turn protestors? ” he said.
The BJP leader said security of India, sovereignty, dealing with terrorism, managing the borders, Custom Check Points, Income Tax enforcement are all amongst the several Constitutional powers of the Union.
If the States stand in way of any of them it is guilty of breaching federal norms, he pointed out.
Referring to Bengal Police intimidating customs officers for checking bags of wife of Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and sitting MP Abhishek Banerjee, Mr Jaitley said ”Can a State barge its Police into the Customs area and direct the Customs as to what is to be done? This would be a threat to federalism.”
He said many states have stopped giving Police security to Income Tax authorities when they conduct their operations.
”Alternatively when State Police is asked for, the information is leaked out to the political Government and it reaches the targets of the operations. Tax authorities increasingly have to rely on Central Forces,” he said.
In the Kashmir Valley recently, searches have conducted under the Governor’s Rule after 17 years, Mr Jaitley said, adding that these taxes are meant for the welfare of the poor.
”The above illustrates a text book method of the UPA on 2 fronts: use Government money, round trip it through Contractors and beneficiaries and enrich themselves. The second is lip sympathy for federalism and destroy it whenever the opportunity arises,” he said, adding that this is a very transparent self goal.

AICC Chief warn party-men working against the alliance candidates in the Lok Sabha elections
Bengaluru, Mar 30 : The All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Rahul Gandhi has issued a stern warning to the party leaders and workers working against the interests of Congress-JD(S) alliance candidates in the Karnataka in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections.
According to the KPCC sources, the Congress president had sent instructions to all the party-men not to derail the Congress-JD(S) pre-poll alliance in the state, by working against the coalition candidates.
Stating that there is an urgent need to defeat the communal forces which are threatening to destroy the plural character of the country, the AICC president had appealed the party-men not to do anything which would weaken the secular forces.
Incidentally following sustained efforts the rebellion in the party at Tumakuru Lok Sabha seat where the sitting Congres MP, Mudduhanumegowda was convinced to withdraw from the fray as a rebel candidate after the seat was allocated to JD(S) and former prime minister H D Devegowda is contesting from this segment.
Another former Congress MLA, N Rajanna was also pursued to fall in line in the same segment.
The missive from the AICC president, warned the rebels of stringent disciplinary action if they made any attempt to work against the party interests, assumed importance following reports that in several Lok Sabha constituencies, synergy between the Congress and the JD(S) leaders was lacking and they were reluctant to campaign for JD(S) candidates.
On Thursday, in Mysuru, several JD(S) leaders including Higher education minister G T Devegowda and the Tourism minister S R Mahesh were absent when the Congress candidate C H Vijayashankar had filed his nomination papers for the Mysuru Lok Sabha seat.
In Mandya Lok Sabha seat, where independent candidate Sumalatha is contesting with the support of the BJP, against the JD(S) candidate Nikhil, several Local Congress leaders are actively taking part during the campaign.

Deepak Talwar case: ED attaches Rs 120 cr Delhi hotel
New Delhi, March 30 Nasheman News : The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday said it has provisionally attached Holiday Inn hotel worth Rs 120 crore in connection with a money laundering case against aviation lobbyist Deepak Talwar.
The hotel is located at Aerocity in Delhi and valued at around Rs 120.20 crore, it said.
Investigation against Talwar was initiated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in August 2017 on the basis of an FIR registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation against officials of the Civil Aviation Ministry, National Aviation Co of India Ltd, Air India and unknown private persons, the ED said in a statement.
“It has been revealed that Deepak Talwar illegally engaged in liasoning/lobbying with politicians, ministers, other public servants and officials of Ministry of Civil Aviation for airlines such as Emirates, Air Arabia and Qatar Airways for securing undue benefits for them.
“He illegally managed to secure favourable traffic rights for these airlines during 2008-09 at the cost of national carrier Air India,” the investigative agency said.
Investigations revealed that in lieu of securing favourable traffic rights, these airlines made payments to the tune of Rs 272 crore to Talwar in 2008-09, it added.
The ED alleged that Talwar created a web of entities owned by him and his family members in India and international offshore havens to launder the proceeds of crime.
“Part of these payments were made to a bank account in Bank of Singapore, belonging to a company – M/s Asiafield Ltd – registered in the British Virgin Islands and beneficially owned by Deepak Talwar.
“These proceeds of crime were layered through a series of international money transfers, to finally integrate in India in M/s Wave Hospitality Pvt Ltd, a company beneficially owned and controlled by Deepak Talwar and his family members in the name of his son Aditya Talwar,” it said.
“These proceeds of crime were then utilized in the construction of Holiday Inn in Aerocity, New Delhi,” it added.
Talwar fled the country in 2017 to avoid investigation. He was deported by immigration authority of Dubai on January 31 and arrested under PMLA. He is now in judicial custody.
The agency said that further investigation was in progress.
Nirav Modi’s bail plea rejected
London/New Delhi, March 29 Nasheman News :The Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday rejected the bail plea of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi suspecting he could “flee” Britain and “interfere with witnesses”, said sources.
Judge Emma Arbuthnot has granted the Metropolitan Police custody of the 48-year-old businessman till the next hearing on April 26.
Arbuthnot is the same judge who ordered the extradition of former Kingfisher Airlines boss Vijay Mallya last December.
The court order came after the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), appearing on behalf of the Indian authorities, argued against Nirav Modi’s bail. “There is a real risk that he could flee, interfere with witnesses, interfere with evidence,” the prosecution said.
Defence barrister Clare Montgomery said, “I (Nirav Modi) have been in the UK even before the case was registered in India. How can my bail be opposed saying I might flee the UK?”
Montgomery, who had earlier represented Vijay Mallya, countered to say that his client is not a “flight risk” as he has rented a flat in London in his own name and was trying to open a bank account when he was arrested.
Before the hearing began, the CPS had submitted a new file with additional evidence against Nirav Modi in the Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
Nirav Modi was arrested on behalf of the Indian authorities from Holborn in London on March 19 in connection with the Rs 13,500-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case.
He was sent to police custody and the next day, was produced before a judge at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court, who denied him bail and deferred the hearing for Friday.
Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi are being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation after the PNB alleged that they cheated it of Rs 13,500 crore with the involvement of a few bank employees.
Both fled India before the details of the fraud emerged in January 2018. The ED on February 26, 2018 attached property worth Rs 147 crore of Nirav Modi and his associate companies in connection with the case.
On May 24 and 26, 2018, it filed charge sheets and sought non-bailable warrants against the duo.
The Interpol also issued a Red Corner Notice against Nirav Modi in July 2018 at the request of the ED and the CBI.
An extradition request against him had been pending before the UK authorities since September last year.
However, the businessman’s whereabouts remained a mystery as he was spotted in New York, Hong Kong and other cities at different times.
His arrest came days after The Telegraph newspaper in Britain published a report earlier this month about Nirav Modi being spotted in London.
The daily reported that he was living in a three-bedroom flat, occupying half the floor of the landmark Centre Point tower block.
The paper said that Nirav Modi was involved in a new diamond business, run from an office in Soho, just a few hundred yards from his apartment. The new business was incorporated in May 2018, it added.
IPL: Warner stars as SRH pip Royals in thrilling tie
Hyderabad, March 30 Nasheman News : A whirlwind half-century by David Warner, coupled with cameos from Vijay Shankar and Rashid Khan, helped Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) beat Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 5 wickets in a thrilling Indian Premier League (IPL) contest here on Friday.
Chasing a stiff 199 for victory, Warner (69; 37b, 4×9, 6×2) set the platform for Sunrisers along with Jonny Bairstow (45; 28b, 4×6, 6×1) before Royals reined in with some timely wickets to take the match down to the wire.
Vijay Shankar (35; 15b, 4×1, 6×3) did his World Cup chances no harm by keeping Sunrisers in the hunt with some lusty blows, but with 12 needed off 12 balls, Rashid (15*, 8b, 4×1, 6×1) spoiled a brilliant 19th over by Jofra Archer whom he smashed for a four and six to win the game for the hosts with one over to spare.
Royals’ Sanju Samson, who earlier slammed this season’s first century, was left high and dry as Sunrisers completed their highest ever run chase.
Warner gave Sunrisers a flying start as the hosts raced to 69/0 after the Powerplay.
Returnign to action after a year-long suspension due to his role in a ball tampering row, Warner brought up his 38th IPL fifty off just 26 balls.
Warner and Bairstow added 110 runs for the opening wicket before Ben Stokes cramped Warner for room with a well-directed bouncer which the southpaw pulled down the throat of Dhawal Kulkarni at the fine leg boundary.
Bairstow followed suit soon after Kulkarni made amends for dropping the England stumper-batsman on 44 with a sharp catch at long-off off Shreyas Gopal.
Vijay Shankar and skipper Kane Williamson (14) looked to continue from where the openers had left, with the former playing the aggressor’s role to perfection.
The duo stitched together 47 runs for the third wicket before both were removed in back-to-back overs by Jaydev Unadkat and Gopal, respectively.
New batsman Manish Pandey (1) was trapped in front soon after with Sunrisers needing 32 runs off 28 balls.
Yusuf Pathan (16*) and Rashid Khan then joined hands to take their team over the line.
Earlier, Royals rode on Samson’s brilliant unbeaten hundred to post 198/2.
Samson (102*; 55b, 4×10, 6×4) notched up his second ton in the competition while Royals’ skipper Ajinkya Rahane too cracked a fluent half-century (70; 49b, 4×4, 6×3) to help the hosts recover from a slow start. The pair added 119 runs for the second wicket.
Samson, who brought up his ton in the 20th over by hitting Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a four, made the most of a reprieve when he was dropped by wicketkeeper Bairstow on 58 in the 17th over by smashing Kumar for 24 runs in the next over (6-4-4-2-4-4).
In the last over, Stokes (16* off 9) came to the party by smacking Kumar for two successive fours to get the home team close to the 200-run mark. Samson and Stokes were associated in a 64-run third wicket partnership which came off just 25 balls.
Bhuvneshwar (0/55) went for 43 runs in his last two overs as Royals scored 76 runs in the last five overs.
Royals lost Jos Buttler (5) early when the in-form England batsman tried to sweep Rashid Khan (1/24) only to lose his leg stumps in the process.
Rahane and Samson then took time to get going as the visitors could only manage 75/1 at the halfway stage.
But from there on, both batsmen accelerated at brisk pace and after Rahane departed in the 16th over, Samson took the Sunrises bowlers to the cleaners.
Brief scores
Rajasthan Royals: 198/2 (Sanju Samson 102 not out, Ajinkya Rahane 70) lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad 201/5 (David Warner 69, Jonny Bairstow 45, Vijay Shankar 35; Shreyas Gopal 3/27)
