HAL delivers three Dhruv choppers to army

Nasheman News : State-run defence behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) on Friday delivered three Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH Dhruv Mk-3) to the Indian Army as part of its contract for making 22 of these.

“We have handed over the documents of the first three of the 22 ALH MK-3 to the Indian Army,” HAL said at the Aero India air show.

HAL Chairman and Managing Director R. Madhavan was present when its helicopter division Chief Executive G.V.S. Bhaskar handed over the documents to Lt. Gen. Kanwal Kumar, Director General of Army Aviation Corps.

The city-based aerospace major in August 2017 signed a Rs 6,100-crore contract to supply 40 ALHs to the Indian Army, including 22 ALH Mk-3 and 18 weaponised ALH Mk-4 Rudra, and one ALH to the Indian Navy.

“Of the 22 helicopters, 19 have been produced and will be delivered in due course,” the company said.

The ALH Dhruv Mk-3 is a multirole new generation copter designed and developed by HAL.

EC lodges police complaint over fake NRI voting news

Nasheman News : The Election Commission (EC) on Friday lodged a police complaint against unknown persons for spreading “fake news” about non-resident Indians (NRIs) being allowed to vote online in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

In a letter to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), New Delhi district, the EC said that publication of such fake news using the logo of the EC was causing “severe confusion in the public, thereby creating public nuisance and mischief”. 

“The unauthorised use of EC logo and the completely false statement regarding online voting seems to be done with a deliberate intent to cause mischief and mislead the public,” the EC complaint read.

The poll panel said it has already asked Twitter and WhatsApp to remove this fake news from their platforms.

It said the false news and unauthorised use of EC logo was violative of various sections of the Indian Penal Code and asked the police to lodge an FIR and “promptly investigate” the matter.

Karnataka audio clips: BS Yeddyurappa gets interim stay on inquiry from High Court

The Karnataka High Court’s Kalaburagi bench on Friday ordered an interim stay on the investigation into allegations that Bharatiya Janata Party state president BS Yeddyurappa tried to bribe a Janata Dal (Secular) MLA, media reported. Yeddyurappa had filed a plea to get a first information report against him quashed.

On February 8, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy had released two  accusing Yeddyurappa of trying to poach the ruling coalition MLA Naganagowda Kandkur. In the audio clips, the BJP leader was purportedly heard offering the MLA’s son Sharangouda Rs 25 lakh and a ministerial post for his father if he switched parties.

Sharangouda had filed the FIR against Yeddyurappa and his associates under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The accused had got anticipatory bail from a Bengaluru court on Saturday. The High Court reserved its verdict on Yeddyurappa’s plea on Wednesday.

The other accused are BJP MLAs Shivanagouda and Preetham Gowda and Yeddyurappa’s advisor Marakal, according to media.

Yeddurappa had initially called the clip fake and had promised to quit politics if it turned out to be true. However, he later claimed that the voice was indeed his, even as he alleged that Kumaraswamy had “doctored” it. He admitted to meeting the MLA’s son.

“Kumaraswamy sent the MLA’s son to me to make me speak according to their requirements and then doctored and edited the audio,” Yeddyurappa said on February 10. “The chief minister himself seems to have written the script for the recording.”

Cricket is not Indian game, kabaddi should be promoted: Sushil Modi

Nasheman News :  Senior BJP leader and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Friday said the cricket is not an Indian game, and kabaddi and football should be promoted.

“Cricket is not an Indian game, it came from England. Most of the countries playing cricket were once colonies of England. There is a need to promote kabaddi and football,” Modi said after inaugurating the 64th National School Kabaddi Championship here. 

He stressed the need to encourage students to play kabaddi. “Students and youths can play kabaddi with zero investment unlike cricket,” he said. 

BCCI undecided on boycotting Pakistan at ICC World Cup

Nasheman News :The crucial BCCI CoA meeting on Friday failed to decide whether India should play against Pakistan in the upcoming ICC cricket World Cup in the United Kingdom in May-July in the wake of the Pulwama terror attack.

After a four-hour-long meeting, the three-member Committee of Administrators (CoA) was undecided on the issue and appeared to be waiting for an indication from the government before it can take a call.

“The June 16 (India vs Pakistan) match is very far away. We will take a call on that much later. We will take a decision only after consultations with the government,” CoA Chairman Vinod Rai told reporters after the meeting.

Asked about the views of some former players and officials who have demanded a boycott of the match against Pakistan, he said he would not like to go into the comments being made by others.

In reply to another question, he said the BCCI would write to ICC about the need to boycott countries from where terror emanates.

“We’ll write to the ICC expressing our concerns about Pakistan and that security of players, officials and everybody else must be taken care of,” Rai said about the first decision taken at the meeting.

“We’re telling the cricket community that in future we must sever ties with nations from where terror emanates,” he said adding the copy of the letter to the ICC will be made public.

Rai also said that there will not be any Indian Premier League (IPL) opening ceremony and the amount of the budget allotted for the ceremony will be given to families of the victims of the Pulwama terror attack.

“There will be no IPL opening ceremony. Instead the money will be donated to families of Pulwama martyrs,” Rai said about the incident in which Pakistan-sponsored terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed carried out a suicide attack in which 40 Central Reservce Police Force (CRPF) troopers were killed.

Stalin, Rajinikanth call on DMDK leader Vijayakant

Nasheman News :  DMK President M.K. Stalin and actor Rajinikanth on Friday called on DMDK founder A. Vijayakant to enquire about his health.

Stalin called on Vijayakant a day after Congress leader S. Thirunavukarasar met the DMDK leader and urged him to take a decision on the alliance that is good for the nation.

Speaking to reporters Stalin said Vijayakant has returned from the US after treatment and he had met him to enquire about his health.

Stalin said he did not speak about politics with Vijayakant as the purpose of his visit was only to enquire about his health.

Similarly, Rajinikant said he met Vijayakant to enquire about his health and there was no politics involved in the meeting.

On Thursday, Congress leader Thirunavukarasar called on Vijayakant at his residence and requested him to take “a good decision” taking into consideration the prevailing conditions in the country.

“He (Vijayakant) is a leader of a political party. I am also a leader and a politician. This is election time. If we say we did not talk politics, I would be lying,” Thirunavukarasar told reporters.

On being queried about whether he asked the DMDK to join the Congress-DMK alliance, Thirunavukarasar said he had asked him to take “a good decision” in the interest of the nation.


IOC suspends India from hosting Olympic qualifying events

Nasheman News :In a major setback for India, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Friday suspended all Indian applications to host future Olympic-related events until New Delhi guarantees in writing the entry of all participants.

The IOC measure comes after two Pakistani shooters were denied visas to compete in the ISSF Shooting World Cup, starting here on Saturday, which also resulted in scrapping of two of the 16 Tokyo Olympic quota places on offer in the marquee tournament.

The denial of visas followed the February 14 Pulwama terror attack that led to the martyrdom of 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) soldiers.

“Since becoming aware of the issue, and in spite of intense last-minute efforts and discussions with the Indian government authorities, no solution has been found to allow the Pakistani delegation to enter India in time to compete,” the IOC statement said.

“As a result, the IOC Executive Board also decided to suspend all discussions with the IOA (Indian Olympic Association) and government regarding the potential applications for hosting future sports and Olympic-related events in India,” it added.

The global sports governing body also urged all international sports federations not to hold events in India, or grant hosting rights to the country for future competitions, until the government had provided “clear written guarantees” to ensure access for all athletes.

The IOC also stated that the men’s 25-metre rapid fire pistol category, in which the two Pakistanis – G.M. Bashir and Khalil Ahmed – were due to take part, is not a part of the Olympic qualifying process. 

That particular event had two Olympic quotas on offer, which have been scrapped by the IOC following a written request by the National Rifle Association of Pakistan (NRAP) on Wednesday.

Those quota places will now be included in the other ISSF World Cups scheduled for later this year.

International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) President Vladimir Lisin had earlier told the media on the sidelines of the World Cup opening ceremony on Thursday evening that all the 16 quota places could be scrapped. That number, however, has been reduced to two by the IOC.

“The IOC restricted the withdrawal of recognition as an Olympic qualification event to the 25m rapid fire pistol competition in which the two Pakistani athletes were supposed to participate,” the IOC said.

“This happened in the interest of the other 500 athletes from 61 countries participating in the other events who are already in India for their competition.”

Stating that no solution could be found despite best efforts of the IOC and the ISSF, the world body said the non-participation of the Pakistani shooters goes against the basic principles of the Olympic charter.

“This situation goes against the fundamental principles of the Olympic charter, in particular the principles of non-discrimination. In view of the above, we wish to inform that the IOC executive board decided to revoke the Olympic qualification status of the specific event,” it added.

At least 12 dead in Assam hooch tragedy, many taken ill

Nasheman News : At least 12 persons have died and over 30 others were taken ill after consuming spurious liquor at a tea garden in Assam’s Golaghat district, police said on Friday.

The incident took place on Thursday night at Salmira tea estate in Golaghat, 300 km from here.

“We have got 12 bodies here at the Golaghat Civil Hospital. Apart from these, there are reports of death of people from adjoining areas of the tea estate,” Golaghat Additional Deputy Commissioner Dhiraj told IANS.

He said they have referred 27 others to the Jorhat Medical College for better treatment and condition of some is serious.

Locals said several people consumed liquor in the estate from a particular seller on Thursday night. Several of them took ill immediately and many have not even been hospitalised.

They also complained about a nexus between police authorities and illegal liquor sellers.


Niti Aayog pushes banks to pass on RBI rate cut

Nasheman News : Government think tank Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar on Friday said banks are in a position to pass on interest rate cut benefits to the consumers and the industry.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had on February 7 announced a repo rate cut of 25 basis points, and so far State Bank of India (SBI) is the only bank to have followed it with a small rate cut of 5 basis points.

“Credit growth has perked up and will increase further, so banks are in a position to pass on the benefits of a rate cut,” Kumar said at an event.

He said the government had to struggle through NPAs in the banking sector.

“We inherited a banking sector with NPAs worth Rs 10.5 lakh crore. But now that struggle seems to be over and the banking sector is looking up again indicating that the interest rate cut be passed on for the growth of the economy,” said Kumar.

Speaking at the event, Punjab National Bank (PNB) MD and CEO Sunil Mehta said, “Deposit rates are our sources of funding. The moment this funding goes down, we won’t be able to serve our customers.”

On Thursday, Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das had met CEOs and MDs of public and private sector banks to persuade them to pass on benefits of lower interest rates to the consumers. 

But the banks expressed their concerns on protecting margins to provide for the NPAs and banking operations, which, they said, may be hit if they start passing on the full rate cut to consumers, without any headroom.

Modi is Prime Time Minister, not PM: Rahul

Nasheman News :Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Friday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling him ‘Prime Time Minister’ and said that when people were crying over the deaths in Pulwama, Modi was indulging “gleefully” in a photoshoot.

“Three hours after the news of the killing of 40 soldiers in Pulwama, ‘Prime Time Minister’ continued shooting the film, Gandhi said.

“There was a lot of pain in the heart of the dear ones of the martyrs — they were going through ‘a sea of emotion’, while the PM was laughing at a photoshoot on a river,” the Congress chief tweeted in Hindi referring to the photoshoot on a lake.

Gandhi’s Twitter dig was preceded by a press conference by party spokesperson Manish Tewari where he raised question over Modi’s actions in the immediate aftermath of the worst ever attack in Jammu and Kashmir since 1989, in which 40 Central Reserve Police Force troopers were killed. 

The Congress for the second day on Friday asked why he failed to mention the attack and its victims while addressing a rally in Rudrapur district of Uttarakhand just two hours later.

“We want to ask the Prime Minister what he was doing between 3.10 p.m. (when the attack happened) and 5.10 p.m. 

At 4.40 p.m., he addressed a rally through mobile phone. To the best of our knowledge, not even once did he mention the attack,” said Tewari earlier at the presser, where he played a DD news video as evidence of PM’s address. 

“If he had condemned the Pulwama attack, he would have paid a tribute to the martyrs.. none of that happened,” he said, adding that Modi “deliberately” chose not to mention the martyrs. 

“There can be no greater insensitivity than that,” he said. 

The Congress leader said there was an even “more frightening scenario” than the Prime Minister merely failing to mention the attack in his speech. 

“Was he unaware of the attack between 3.10 p.m. and 5.30 p.m.? He was either not informed about it by his office or he was incommunicado. That speaks a lot about the state of communication in the higher echelons of Indian state,” Tewari said. 

He stressed the point that India being a nuclear power — surrounded by another nuclear power in Pakistan — cannot afford to have leaders who cannot be communicated in time.

“If you (Modi) didn’t know that there was an attack, can there be a greater incompetence,” he said. 

The Congress even dismissed government’s decision on Thursday of stopping water of three eastern rivers — the Beas, Ravi and Sutlej — to Pakistan as “high octane jingoism” and termed it a subterfuge to hide the failure of the national security. 

“The BJP-NDA government is a brilliant mix of arrogance and ignorance,” he said
