Nasheman News : Dense fog descended over the national capital on a cold Monday morning bringing down visibility to 50 metres disrupting road, rail and air traffic as the minimum temperature was recorded at 8 degrees Celsius, one notch below normal.
Visibility was zero at 7.30 a.m. at Palam, the Met Office said. Humidity was 100 per cent at 8.30 a.m.
“There was dense to very dense fog in parts of Delhi. The sky will remain partially cloudy during the day with haze and smog thereafter,” an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.
The intense fog made the Delhi Traffic Police issue an advisory which asked drivers to use low beam head lights, avoiding overtaking and checking weather updates before leaving house.
Low visibility contributed to the delaying of 27 Delhi-bound trains.
The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said there have been some “dynamic delay” in some flights leaving the Indira Gandhi International Airport but not a single flight has been cancelled despite the low visibility.
“There was not a single cancellation or diversion of flight at the Delhi Airport on Monday. There could be of up to 15-20 minutes delay in departures as per the Air Traffic Control (ATC).
“The runway visibility had improved to 150 metres after sometime,” a DIAL spokesperson told media.
The visibility improved to 2,000 metres by 10.30 a.m. at Safdarjung, the IMD said, however, it was poor at Palam adjacent to the airport, where it was 300 metres.
One of the reasons cited for the sudden dense fog was calm winds and rains in the preceding days.
“Rains and calm winds contributed to the forming of the fog. It was expected to happen on Sunday too, but winds with speed around 10-15 kmph scattered them,” Mahesh Palawat of Skymet said.
The fog will continue for the next couple of days due to a western disturbance approaching on Tuesday, which will lead to a change in the direction of the wind.
There was no rainfall in the past 24 hours. The IMD forecast light rains accompanied by thunderstorm or hail from Tuesday till Thursday that will reduce the likelihood of fog, he added.
On Sunday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 19.9 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal for this time of the year and the minimum was at 9.4 degrees Celsius, one above average.

CPI-M, Nair community cross swords in Kerala
Nasheman News : A war of words has broken out between the CPI-M and the Nair Service Society (NSS) — the socio-cultural arm of the Hindu Nair community, with each threatening the other.
Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Monday told reporters: “Socio-cultural organisations need not dabble in politics.
“If the NSS wants, let them form a political party. They had one before and it was wound up. If they want to dabble in politics, let them take an open stand. They should openly state whether they are supporting the BJP or the Congress.”
He also accused NSS General Secretary G. Sukumaran Nair of “shadow boxing”. “What he ought to do is take an open stand. NSS need not threaten the CPI-M,” said Balakrishnan.
The Left leader’s comments came a day after Nair’s, when the NSS leader said that it does not have to learn the principles of renaissance from the CPI-M.
The Hindu Nair community which forms a large portion of the Kerala population has been unhappy with the way Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan tried to implement the Sabarimala verdict of the Supreme Court allowing women of all age groups to enter the temple.
Matters came to a head after the NSS took part in the ‘Ayyappa Jyothi’ event but did not join the “Women’s Wall” event organised by the Vijayan government as part of its efforts to uphold the Renaissance Movement in the state.
Trump plans to keep troops in Iraq to monitor Iran
Nasheman News : US President Donald Trump is planning to keep American troops in Iraq to monitor and maintain pressure on neighbouring Iran.
“I want to be able to watch Iran,” Trump said in an interview aired on Sunday on CBS.
“We’re going to keep watching and we’re going to keep seeing and if there’s trouble, if somebody is looking to do nuclear weapons or other things, we’re going to know it before they do.”
Trump’s comments come as the US has quietly been negotiating with Iraq for weeks to allow American commandos and support troops now operating in Syria to shift to bases in Iraq and strike the Islamic State (IS) terror group from there, reports The New York Times.
Military leaders are seeking to maintain pressure on the IS as the President fundamentally reorders policy toward Syria and toward Afghanistan, where peace talks with the Taliban are underway.
In response to Trump’s remarks, Iraqi MP Jawad al-Musawi said on Sunday night that “there will be an escalation in the opposition to them”.
“There is distrust of the American government – even if they say they are coming to protect us against the IS,” he said, adding “the real reason they will be coming is to hit Iran.”
American forces operate from several Iraqi bases across the country, with most of the roughly 5,200 troops based at Al Asad or in Erbil in northern Iraq.
SC declines urgent hearing of CBI plea against Kolkata Police chief
Nasheman News :The Supreme Court will hear on Tuesday a CBI plea against Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar who is accused of allegedly destroying evidence related to the Saradha chit fund scam.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi declined a plea by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta seeking an urgent hearing on Monday.
Describing the situation as “extraordinary”, Mehta said: “We fear evidence will be destroyed.”
In response, the Chief Justice said: “We were late in reaching the court by a few minutes because we were reading your application… There’s no evidence of what you’re saying right now.
“If you show one proof they are tampering or even remotely thinking of it, we’ll come down so heavily that they will regret it.”
The applications seeks to restrain the Kolkata police commissioner from tampering with evidence.
Another one for initiating contempt against the West Bengal Chief Secretary, Director General of State Police and Kolkata police chief were filed by the CBI on Monday.
The agency has sought direction to the state government to cooperate in the investigation of the scam and make available Rajeev Kumar for questioning.
The apex court gave the CBI a day’s time to place on record material to show that the State or its police were “engaged in or planning to destroy evidence connected with the investigation of the scam”.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee continued her sit-in protest in Kolkata on Monday over the Central Bureau of Investigation’s attempt to question Kumar in connection with a ponzi scheme scam.
The Trinamool Congress supremo has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party chief Amit Shah of attempting to destabilise her government.
The top court on May 9, 2014 handed over to CBI the investigation into the Rs 10,000 crore that were collected by Ponzi companies involving 25 lakh depositors.
The number was based on claims filed before a Commission of inquiry in West Bengal and Odisha.
Andhra CM takes serious note of theft at Tirupati temple
Nasheman News : Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has taken serious note of the theft of three crowns from the temple of Sri Govinda Raja Swamy in Tirupati and directed the police to take immediate steps to apprehend the culprits.
During a teleconference with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders on Monday, Naidu said the government would not tolerate such incidents. He said the authorities concerned have been directed to tighten security to prevent such incidents.
The three crowns, weighing approximately 1,351 gm and valued at around Rs 50 lakh, were stolen on Saturday evening, officials said.
The Tirupati Urban police have formed nine teams to crack the case. Officials said they were scanning CCTV footage of the temple and surrounding areas. Some temple employees, including the priests who were on duty, were questioned on Sunday.
Tirupati Urban Superintendent of Police K.K.N. Anburajan said the police had gathered vital clues and exuded confidence of cracking the case soon.
The crowns were said to be stolen between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday. The investigators quizzed a priest and other employees who came to the temple for the shift that started at 5 p.m. A suspect was also questioned. However, they were later let off.
Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) Executive Officer Anil Kumar Singhal has inspected the temple premises.
He said as soon as the duty ‘archakas’ noticed that the crowns were missing, senior officers rushed to the temple. Kumar said there were 15 cameras in the temple which were functioning properly.
The vigilance staff of the TTD have submitted CCTV footage to the police.
The Sri Govinda Raja Swamy temple is one of the 10 temples which come under the TTD.
Will Sumalatha contest Lok Sabha polls in 2019?
JD(S) isn’t happy with the Congress’ efforts to being Sumalatha into electoral politics as this could be a stumbling block for Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Gowda who wants to contest from Manyda.
After the death of rebel star Ambareesh, a void has been created in the Mandya Congress. With hundreds of Ambareesh fans demanding that his wife Sumalatha contest from the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency, the question is – will she? On Friday, hundreds of Ambareesh fans gathered outside Sumalatha’s residence in Bengaluru and requested her to contest the Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate.
Speaking to the media after interacting with the fans, Sumalatha said, “Ambareesh’s fans were very supportive when he contested elections. Even after his death, they are offering to support me. I had never given a thought about entering politics or contesting elections in the past. Seeing the amount of respect they have for Ambareesh and me, I do not want to disappoint them. However, this is not an easy decision to make and I feel like I still need to think about it,” Sumalath said.
The actor also said that she had not yet held talks with leaders of any political party. And if she decides to contest, Sumalatha is unsure whether she wants to be a Congress candidate and get embroiled in the tension on ground in Mandya between JDS and Congress.
“Ambareesh was with the Congress and I am yet to talk to the leaders from the party. I don’t know if I will contest the elections but if I do, I will contest from Mandya. Ambareesh had worked for the people of Mandya and our family will continue to do the same. I am humbled by the support the people have shown me and I do not want to disappoint them,” Sumalath added.
According to Congress sources, the party lost a lot of votes during the 2014 Lok Sabha election as Ambareesh did not campaign actively for the Congress candidate. “When Ramya lost by a small margin, it was only because Ambareesh’s voter base did not vote for the Congress. With the pre-poll alliance in place, Sumalatha will be a neutral choice. If the JD(S) does not agree to field Sumalatha as the alliance’s candidate, then it would spell trouble for them. If she contests then it would be beneficial to Congress as Ambareesh was a Congress loyalist,” the source added.
However, JD(S) insiders say that the party is not happy with the Congress’ move to bring Sumalatha into electoral politics as it would then become difficult for Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Gowda to enter the fray.
“Kumaraswamy wants Nikhil to contest simply because his nephew Prajwal Revanna is contesting this time. Although Deve Gowda is not inclined towards offering Nikhil a ticket, the chances of him getting one would become lesser if Sumalatha decides to enter electoral politics. It would be worse if she contested as an independent as it would split the vote bank,” the source added.
Woman attempts suicide, accuses bishop of sexual harassment.
A woman’s attempt to take her own life on Saturday revealed a case of sexual harassment and intimidation by a bishop and a member of the Church of South India in Bengaluru. Bishop PK Samuel of the Holy Trinity Church has been accused of sexually harassing 27-year-old Hema*, while he and CSI member Vinod Dasan allegedly intimidated her after she refused to back down on six-year-old sexual harassment case she had been fighting against Vinod.
Hema attempted to kill herself on January 31 following a verbal altercation with Bishop PK Samuel, said DCP East Rahul Kumar.
Bishop TK Samuel has been booked under Sections 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 506 (criminal intimidation), 504, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, according to DCP East Rahul Kumar. Vinod Dasan has been booked for criminal intimidation.
Back in 2013, Hema filed a complaint at the Kothanur Police Station accusing Vinod of sexual harassment. That case is currently under trial.
Last month, Vinod visited Hema’s mother in Bengaluru and told her to convince Hema to drop the case. He had also informed Hema’s mother that Bishop PK Samuel wanted to meet Hema and her husband, and counsel her on the case. On January 21, Hema and her husband arrived at Holy Trinity Church near Trinity Circle in Bengaluru, where they met both Samuel and Vinod.
After they spoke, Vinod allegedly said that he wanted to speak to Hema’s husband, leaving Hema alone with Samuel. Samuel allegedly continued to pressurise Hema into withdrawing the case and allegedly offered to pay her Rs 1 crore as well as employment through the Diocese. However, Hema refused. At that point, he allegedly put his hand on her shoulder and misbehaved with her, DCP East Rahul added.
Hema tried to shout for help, but Samuel allegedly told her that he would kill her if she screamed. Soon after, Hema left with her husband.
Following the January 21 incident, Hema tried to file a complaint at the Halasuru Police Station against Samuel and Vinod, but the station did not record her police, a senior police official said.
On January 31 around 1 am, while Hema was at CSI Hospital in Shivajinagar where her ailing mother is a patient, Samuel allegedly came to speak to her again at the hospital. He continued to try and persuade Hema to drop the case against Vinod, and allegedly threatened her life again. She and Samuel began to argue loudly, and Hema – who police believe had been contemplating suicide for a while – took out a bottle of insecticide and drank from it. Samuel called for security and Hema was taken for treatment immediately. She is currently stable and is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Soon after the incident occurred, the Shivajinagar Police arrived at the hospital. Once Hema’s condition became stable, they took down her statement. The case has now been transferred to the Halasuru Police Station, DCP Rahul added.
Media attempts to reach the CSI, Karnataka Central Diocese went unanswered.
