N The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has amassed over Rs 553 crore as income from unknown sources in 2017-18, which is 80 percent of total such income and four times the aggregate declared by the five other national parties.
According to a report by election watchdog the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) released on Wednesday, a total of Rs 689.44 crore was declared as income from unknown sources by the national parties, of which the BJP pocketed Rs 553.38 crore.
Unknown sources are income declared in the IT returns but without giving source of income for donations below Rs 20,000.
Such unknown sources include donations via Electoral Bonds, sale of coupons, relief fund, miscellaneous income, voluntary contributions, contribution from meetings/morchas. The details of donors of such voluntary contributions are not available in the public domain.
“At present, political parties are not required to reveal the name of individuals or organisations giving less than Rs 20,000 nor those who donated via Electoral Bonds. As a result, more than 50 per cent of the funds cannot be traced and are from ‘unknown’ sources. While the national political parties were brought under the RTI Act by the CIC ruling in June 2013, they have still not complied with the decision,” the ADR said in the report.
As per the report, the total income of six national political parties barring the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in 2017-18 stood at Rs 1,293.05 crore.
While their total income from known donors was Rs 467.13 crore or 36 per cent of the total income, their income from other known sources (sale of assets, membership fees, bank interest, sale of publications, party levy) was Rs 136.48 crore or 11 per cent of total income.
The total income of political parties from unknown sources (income specified in the IT Returns whose sources are unknown) was Rs 689.44 crore, which is 53 per cent of the total income of the parties.
Of Rs 689.44 crore as income from unknown sources, share of income from Electoral Bonds was Rs 215 crore or 31 per cent.
The BJP also got over 93 per cent of donations of above Rs 20,000 received by national political parties, during 2017-18, pocketing Rs 437.04 crore of the total Rs 469.89 crore donated by corporates and individuals.
Of the total donations, the BJP got the lion’s share with 2,977 donations followed by the Congress which has declared receiving Rs 26.658 crore
In the last 14 years (2004-05 to 2017-18), the national parties have collected Rs 8,721.14 crore from unknown sources.
Currently, there are seven national parties – the BJP, Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party, Nationalist Congress Party, Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India-Marxist and All India Trinamool Congress.

Congress has targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for absence at seer’s funeral.
A day after 111-year-old chief seer of the Siddaganga Mutt, Shivakumara Swamy was laid to rest in Tumakuru, the Congress has targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not attending his funeral. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara took to Twitter to question the Prime Minister’s absence and added that repeated requests to confer the Lingayat seer the Bharat Ratna have gone in vain.
“Swamiji (Sri Shivakumara Swami of Siddaganga Mutt) served humanity. PM should have attended the cremation ceremony. I am not saying where else PM should have gone. I am not a small-minded person. If PM would have attended, it would have raised the level of his office,” Parameshwara said, speaking to the media on Wednesday.
Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had come to Tumakuru to pay last respects on behalf of Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday. The body of the deceased seer was kept on display at the Gosala Siddeshwara Vedike at the mutt throughout the day and lakhs of devotees turned up to offer their tributes.

Trump should resign: US former Secretary of State
Nasheman News : US former Secretary of State John Kerry has said if he can speak to President Donald Trump directly, he would tell him to “resign”.
Trump was supposed to attend the World Economic Forum here to deliver an address, but he pulled out because of the partial government shutdown that has become the longest in US history.
Asked during a World Economic Forum panel on Tuesday, what he would say to Trump if he were seated across from him, Kerry gave one-word answer: “Resign”.
“He doesn’t take any of this seriously,” the 2004 Democratic nominee for President said on the panel, adding that he doesn’t think Trump had the “ability” to have deep conversations, the Washington Post reported.
The White House did not respond to Kerry’s comment, but Trump had earlier slammed the media for not understanding him and his approach to Davos.
“Last time I went to Davos, the fake news said I should not go there. This year, because of the shutdown, I decided not to go, and the fake news said I should be there. The fact is that the people understand the media better than the media understands them!” Trump tweeted before Kerry’s call to resign.
Kerry, who was Secretary of State during President Barack Obama’s second term, also criticized Trump for “his insane decision” to pull out of the Paris climate accord in June 2017, for which “people will die”.
“I wish there was a lawsuit capacity that could hold people liable for such an insane decision as he has made, which is going to cost lives,” he said.
“People will die because of the President’s decision, and billions of dollars of damage will be done to property.”
Kerry also accused the President of lying about the consequences of pulling out of the accord. Trump claimed at the time that he was leaving to pursue “fair treatment” and so that foreign leaders would no longer “laugh at us”.
“I’m disappointed when a President of the US lies, and that was a lie — there’s no burden,” said Kerry, adding that “Paris did not place outside burdens levied by any other country on any other country”.
Now SBI chases Mehul Choksi for Rs 405 crore loan default
Nasheman News : In a new development, the State Bank of India (SBI) on Wednesday moved to recover loan outstandings of Rs 405 crore from absconding diamantaire Mehul Choksi, his family and companies.
This is the first time the country’s biggest bank’s exposure has been revealed in the case involving Choksi, who is among the prime accused in the Rs 13,500 crore fraud in the Punjab National Bank (PNB).
Significantly, the developments came two days after it became clear that Choksi had surrendered his Indian citizenship in favour of the nationality of Antigua & Barbuda Isle in the West Indies.
Choksi, his nephew Nirav Modi, several of their family members, employees and retired or serving top PNB executives and officials are accused in the PNB scam.
In a prominent media notice on Wednesday, the SBI has demanded repayment of the loan amount sanctioned against various assets in Mumbai, Raigad, Nashik and Hyderabad belonging to Choksi, his family and group companies.
These include residential and commercial premises with multiple parking spaces, plus several plots of land in Maharashtra and Telangana, standing in their names.
The SBI has already served notices to them at their “last known addresses” as on December 31, 2018, under section 13(2) of the Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets & Enforcement of Security Interest Act, 2002. But the notices returned undelivered.
The loan amount – described as a ‘Working Capital Facility’ – was extended to Gitanjali Gems Ltd, Bandra Kurla Complex, Gemplus Division at Andheri East, premises in Bharat Diamond Bourse, a property in Santacruz and a plot in Maheshwaram Mandal in Rangareddy district of Telangana.
The SBI said that in order to avail the loan amount, the borrowers (above) had pledged shares and mortgaged various properties on ‘pari passu basis’.
These include properties in Cumballa Hill, Bandra Kurla Complex, Andheri, 27 plots measuring a total 9.60 hectares in Panvel, Raigad, 42 big and small plots of land in Balwant Nagar, Nashik.
In Telangana, a total of 38.51 hectares of land in two plots situated in Rangareddy district are named.
Choksi is shown as a guarantor for the 12-odd defaulter loan accounts, Priti Choksi and the late Guniyal Choksi are two security providers, all residing in Gokul Apartments, Malabar Hill.
The other companies include: Decent Securities and Finance Ltd, Decent Investment and Finance Ltd, and Nashik Multi Services Ltd, all located in Bandra Kurla Complex, and the Hyderabad Gems SEZ Ltd, Telangana.
The SBI has warned them to repay their outstanding dues within 60 days failing which the bank would proceed against them vis-a-vis the securities provided to recover the full dues.
In February 2018, SBI Chairman Rajnish Kumar had said that the bank had no ‘direct exposure’ in the scam involving Nirav Modi, barring a Rs 1,360-crore due from PNB.
There was no mention of the Rs 405-crore Choksi loan default in the matter till now.
PM inaugurates Netaji Subhas museum at Red Fort
Nasheman News : Ahead of Republic Day celebrations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated three new museums inside the Red Fort compound commemorating the nation’s freedom struggle, including one on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and his Indian National Army (INA).
The first museum showcases artefacts related to Bose and the INA, including a wooden chair and sword used by Netaji, medals, badges, uniforms and more. The INA trials were held in the Red Fort.
Modi also unveiled the ‘Yaad-e-Jallian’ museum that will take the visitors through the bloody massacre of the Jallianwala Bagh in 1919. It will also showcase the heroism, valour and sacrifices made by Indian soldiers during World War-1.
The third museum is dedicated to the historical narrative of the 1857 War of Independence, showcasing the valour and sacrifices made by Indians in the first war of independence against the British.
The museums have been designed to provide an immersive experience to visitors with photographs, paintings, newspaper clippings, ancient public records, audio and video clips, animation and multimedia.
EVM’s untrustworthy, need to be replaced with ballot papers : AAP
Nasheman News : The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday demanded that in view of the latest charges against the electronic voting machines (EVMs) by a hacker in London, the old, tried and tested ballot papers should be used again in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The party has also exhorted all opposition parties to boycott the polls if their demand was not paid heed to.
Rajya Sabha member of AAP and in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, Sanjay Singh told IANS that this was necessary to “save democracy and install faith of the people once again in the election process”.
The national spokesman of the AAP further said that the latest revelations clearly shrouded the neutrality of the EVM’s and hence should be replaced with ballot papers.
“These EVM’s show the benefit of EVM’s going to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and takes away from the opposition a level playing field” he said further.
Chief spokesman of the party’s state unit, Vaibhav Maheshwari while claiming that the Election Commission was not ready to concede that the EVM’s were open for tampering demanded that the poll panel ensure a “public audit” of the EVM’s.
Raising doubts on the fairies of the EVM’s, the party has demanded that all political parties should write to the Election Commission of India, saying that they will boycott the elections for the Lok Sabha if the EVM’s were used for the polls.
“There is no other option but to ban the EVM’s and conduct the Lok Sabha and all future elections through ballot paper method” Sanjay Singh said.
Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday had spoken on similar lines and had cited the example of a “developed nation like Japan” which still used the traditional ballot paper method for elections in their country.
“In view of the recent revelations, further doubts have been created in the minds of people and the EC should taken them into account” the former UP chief minister has said.
The ruling BJP leaders, both in the state and the centre, have trashed the accusations made by the opposition parties and have claimed that by raising doubts on the EVM’s, the opposition was making ground for an almost certain defeat at the hustings in the Lok Sabha 2019 polls.
Death toll from Mexico pipeline blast rises to 93
Nasheman News : The number of people killed in a gas pipeline explosion in the Mexican state of Hidalgo last Friday increased to 93, the Minister of Health Jorge Alcocer said on Tuesday.
The number of the dead grew due to the severity of burns suffered by the individuals, Alcocer said at a press conference, which was also attended by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
Another 46 people remain hospitalised including one who is “very grave with a bad prognosis,” the minister said, reports Xinhua news agency.
There have been changes in the hospitals and on Monday one more patient was transferred to a specialised burn hospital in Galveston, Texas in the US, Alcocer said.
The explosion and an ensuing blaze occurred at a pipeline spot in the community of San Primitivo in the municipality of Tlahuelilpan at around 7:00 p.m. local time (0100 GMT) on Friday.
According to the local government, between 600 and 800 people gathered at the site to collect leaked fuel with containers when the explosion took place.
Lopez Obrador said the country’s Attorney General (FGR) will be the one handling the investigation into finding those responsible and arresting them.
The accident is one of the worst tragedies caused by pipeline explosions in Mexico in recent years.
In December 2010, 30 people were killed and 52 others injured in a series of explosions at two oil pipelines in the central state of Puebla.
1st ODI: Discipline bowling restricts New Zealand to 157
[Nasheman news] NapierIndia rode chinaman Kuldeep Yadav and pacer Mohammed Shami’s exceptional bowling effort on Wednesday to restrict New Zealand to a paltry 157 runs in the first of the five-match ODI rubber at the McLean Park here.
While Kuldeep’s figures were 4/39, Shami was also phenomenal with the leather, scalping three Kiwi wickets conceding just 19 runs from his six overs.
Yuzvendra Chahal and Kedar Jadhav picked two and one wicket, respectively.
Other than New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson (64), no other batsmen put up a fight against the disciplined Indian attack.
Opting to bat, the hosts had the worst possible start as Shami struck early sending back both the openers — Martin Guptill (5) and Colin Munro (8), cheaply.
Newcomers Williamson and Ross Taylor (24) then tried to rescue their side from the early damage, taking New Zealand past the 50-run mark in 13.3 overs.
However, Taylor’s stay was cut short by Chahal in the 15th over with the hosts at 52/3.
With the addition of just 24 runs in the Kiwi scorecard, Chahal struck again to dismiss incoming batsman Tom Latham (11). Jadhav and Shami then joined the party as they sent back Henry Nicholls (12) and Mitchell Santner (14), leaving the hosts reeling at 133/6.
Williamson, however, continued to show resistance and kept one end safe, but lacked support from the other end.
While trying to clear the fence in the 34th over off a Kuldeep delivery, the Kiwi skipper misread the ball and offered a simple catch to Vijay Shankar at long-on.
Kuldeep then put the final nail in the coffin, picking the tailenders — Doug Bracewell (7), Lockie Ferguson (0) and Trent Boult (1) in quick succession to wrap up the host in just 38 overs.
Brief score: New Zealand 157 all out (Kane Williamson 64, Ross Taylor 24; Kuldeep Yadav 4/39) vs India
Barcelona coach compliments new player Boateng ahead of Sevilla clash
[Nasheman news] BarcelonaFC Barcelona head coach Ernesto Valverde has praised the experience and character of the club’s newest player, former Ghana international Kevin-Prince Boateng, terming him a “strong player”.
The 31-year-old forward joined Barça on a six-month loan deal from Italy’s Sassuolo for one million euros ($1.13 million), with an option that Barcelona make the move permanent for 8 million euros in the summer of 2019, reports Efe news.
“Kevin-Prince Boateng is a player who has experience, knows the league and the role he will develop,” Valverde said at a press conference on Tuesday night.
“We hope he helps us, he is a strong player,” Valverde added.
Barça’s coach stressed that Boateng knows La Liga well, as he played as a forward for Las Palmas during the 2016-17 season.
Valverde said he would include the Berlin-born player of Ghanaian ancestry in Wednesday’s match against Sevilla in the Copa del Rey quarterfinal.
“He can play now,” Valverde said, “because he played (with Sassuolo) the whole game against Inter (in Serie A) on Saturday; one of the reasons why he is here is because he is active.”
