Opting to bat in the final Test, India took a commanding position as Cheteswar Pujara and stumper Rishabh Pant’s scintillating 193 and 159-run respective knock guided India to a massive 622/7 in their first innings.
India then rode chinaman Kuldeep Yadav’s fifer to bundle out the home side on 300 runs before enforcing a follow-on.
Australia were six for no loss in their second innings and play wasn’t possible on the final day of the Test, thanks to the continuous rains as the contest ended in draw.

Brief Score: India 622/7 d (Cheteshwar Pujara 193, Rishabh Pant 159 not out; Nathan Lyon 4/178) draw vs Australia 300 all out and 6/0 (Usman Khawaja 4 not out, Marcus Harris 2 not out)

Here’s a ‘politician’ with a difference
By Sanu George (12:08)
Thiruvananthapuram (IANS) At a time when politicians are seen to increase their personal wealth when in public life, a Congressman in Kerala, currently on a sabbatical from politics, is seeking to build a self-sustainable housing facility for the homeless in his home town in Kollam district, about 70 km from the state capital.
What’s more, he is doing this on his ancestral property of about one acre and 10 cents (4,451 sq m) that he has divided between 20 beneficiaries, with each getting four cents. The market value of the land is about Rs 8 crore ($1.1 million).
Speaking to IANS, 42-year-old Niyaz Chithara said he is an advocate by training and has taken a break from active politics to ensure his “Gandhigram” project materialises.
“I was shocked to see a mentally challenged four-year-old boy waiting at the Mudackal panchayat with an old lady. When I spoke to the old lady, she said she was the boy’s grandmother and she had come to see if the village council has any scheme for the poor and homeless. I came to know that the boy’s mother had deserted the child and his father was bedridden due to an accident,” Chithara said.
Returning home, Chithara said that he was too pained and remembered the words of Mahatma Gandhi: “You must be the change you want to see in the world.”
“I did not take much time to decide that I will play my role for the upliftment of the downtrodden. I decided that the ancestral share of mine, which was 110 cents of land in the Chithara village council, would be gifted to the landless and I started work to accomplish this,” Chithara said.
A former chairman of the Government Law College and an office bearer of the Youth Congress, he soon send out postcards to all the landless families in two nearby village councils.
“I got a response from 300 people and I called all of them to an auditorium. I then spoke to each of them and made my own assessment of who should get the four cents. I selected 19 beneficiaries (the 20th was the mentally-challenged child) across caste, creed, community and religion. I registered the land in the names of the women in the respective families,” said Chithara.
The only condition that he has put up is that these beneficiaries should build a home through any of the government schemes and if they do not do it in three years, the land will be taken back. And once the home is built, it should not be sold or transferred for 15 years.
“I decided to take on the responsibility of building a home for the young mentally challenged boy and will approach people to give a helping hand. We plan to build a 500 sq ft home at a cost of Rs 5 lakh. Next week, the official handing over of the land to the 20 beneficiaries will be done by (Leader of Opposition) Ramesh Chennithala, while (state Congress president) Mulapally Ramachandran will hand over the first instalment of assistance to build the home for the boy,” said Chithara.
Chithara has already spent Rs 5 lakh to level the entire plot and dig a pond.
“In the Gandhigram village, I am planning a library, a place for the women to start their own vocation and an anganwadi, so that the small community gets an inbuilt facility for all their basic needs,” said Chithara.

Rich temples on government radar after Suluvadi incident
The Suluvadi prasadam poisoning case that killed 17 persons has brought the heat on other non-Muzrai profitable temples in the region.
The Suluvadi prasadam poisoning case that killed 17 persons has brought the heat on other non-Muzrai profitable temples in the region. These temples have a large following of devotees and are rich in resources. Hitherto, Chamarajanagar district administration and authorities had stayed away from temple affairs considering the sensitivity of the matter.
In the Suluvadi case at the Kichuguthu Maaramma Temple, differences arose between temple trustees over the construction of a gopuram, and the desire to take control of its resources said to be worth Rs 1.5 crore. The administration is hence now gathering information on the tussle and the goings-on in the temple. Chamarajanagar Deputy Commissioner B B Cauvery said that the tahsildars have been told to keep a watch and gather information of resources of rich non-Muzari temples.
Revenue officials are focusing on Chikkalur where lakhs of devotees of saint Siddappaji congregate for five days during a jatra (fair). It attracts devotees around the year. According to sources, they will keep a watch and gather information on Kurubana Kattee that follows the Neelaragar tradition. Doddammatheye, Mariyamma, Kannikaparameshwari, Maradi Gudda, Lord Ganesha (MM Hills Road) temples and many others are also under the scanner.
The district administration is likely to collect information of “inside” stories of trustees of temples, its resources and expenditure. Any kind of confrontation will be avoided, so as to avoid harming innocent devotees or the general public. The DC said that a list of such temples will be prepared and a watch kept on them. Admitting that there are disputes among temple committees, the DC said a “good number” of cases are pending over taking control of temple administrations.

AgustaWestland case: Michel sent to judicial custody
Nasheman News : A Delhi court on Saturday sent British national Christian James Michel, the middleman in the Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal case, to judicial custody.
Michel, who was with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) since December 22, was produced before Special Judge Arvind Kumar around 2 p.m. who sent him to judicial custody.
The ED sought his judicial custody in connection with its probe into a money laundering case.
In the court, ED counsel D.P. Singh said the audit reports submitted during the trial of the Italian court appeared to be “factually incorrect” and hence it was required to to be seen whether the Italian court had based its decision on the same audit report.
Singh also informed the court that the investigation into Michel’s role had been fruitful.
“We have investigated how hawala cash circulated through multiple bank accounts,” he said, adding that the agency had identified Michel’s properties purchased out of the proceeds of crime.
“During questioning, Michel has given contradictory answers to various questions and he was not able to explain the contradictions,” Singh said.
The ED counsel also said that Michel had received euro 24.25 million and pound 16,096,245 from the AgustaWestland deal.
“During his interrogation, it was observed that he received money for other defence deals,” Singh said.
Michel was extradited to India on December 4 from the United Arab Emirates and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) got his custody till December 19.
Michel was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on December 22 and sent to a seven-day ED custody over money laundering charges by a court here. The court on December 29 again sent him to another seven-day ED custody.
Michel was earlier lodged in the Tihar Jail here in a related CBI case after the expiry of his custody with the CBI. He was questioned by the CBI till December 19.
Michel is one of the three middlemen being investigated by the CBI and the ED in the VVIP chopper deal.
In January last year, the ED lodged a request with the UAE authorities seeking extradition of Michel. Both the ED and the CBI had filed charge-sheets in bribery cases in Indian courts and non-bailable warrants were issued against the accused.
In its chargesheet, the CBI named former Indian Air Force chief S.P. Tyagi, his cousin Sanjeev Tyagi alias Julie, then IAF Vice Chief J.S. Gujral and advocate Gautam Khaitan as the four Indians involved in the scam.
Others named in the chargesheet included Giuseppe Orsi, the former chief of Italian defence and aerospace major Finmeccanica, and Bruno Spagnolini, former CEO of AgustaWestland, apart from middlemen Michel, Haschke and Gerosa.
‘19 lakh vehicles registered in bangalore over 15 years old’
The Minister said alternative fuels, environment-friendly vehicles and notification on emission standards have been issued for different kinds of fuels in India to bring down air pollution.
Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Mansukh L Mandaviya on Thursday informed the Lok Sabha that 19,82,199 vehicles registered in Bengaluru were over 15 years old.
His written reply was to a query from Bengaluru Central MP P C Mohan questioning if the Centre was aware that over 16 lakh old vehicles were plying in the city and if any proposal to tackle air pollution had been taken.
The Minister said alternative fuels, environment-friendly vehicles and notification on emission standards have been issued for different kinds of fuels in India to bring down air pollution. “The government has mandated mass emission standards for BS-VI throughout the country from 1 April, 2020,” Mandaviya said.
Asked about the old vehicles, a senior official in one of the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in the city said the Centre was yet to formulate a “weeding out” order (removal order) against older vehicles in the country. “Unless the government issues a weeding order, we cannot take action against such vehicles. A proposal to ease out such vehicles is pending with the Centre,” the official said. A top traffic cop said, “Unless the RTO issues seizure orders, we cannot take away old vehicles.”
A Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) official felt the government needs to ban older vehicles from other districts or states entering important cities, including Bengaluru. “The Centre also needs to provide some kind of incentive to owners of old vehicles to scrap them. If some subsidy is offered to help purchase new vehicles, then owners will voluntarily do it,” he said.
