CJI's mother ‘duped' by family property caretaker; accused held

Nagpur: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad Arvind Bobde’s mother was allegedly duped to the tune of Rs 2.5 crore by the caretaker of a family property here, the police said on Wednesday.

The accused, Tapas Ghosh (49), was arrested on Tuesday night.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is looking into the matter under the supervision of DCP Vinita Sahu, said Nagpur commissioner of police (CP) Amitesh Kumar.

Mukta Bobde, CJI Bobde’s mother, is the owner of Seadon Lawn near Akashwani Square which is rented out for marriages and other functions, he said.

The Bobde family had appointed Ghosh as caretaker of the property in 2007. He was paid salary and also a commission on bookings.

Taking advantage of Mukta Bobde’s advanced age and frail health, Ghosh and his wife allegedly kept her in the dark about transactions, and did not deposit the entire rent amount which they collected, the CP said. They also allegedly forged receipts.

The fraud came to light when several bookings were canceled during lockdown for coronavirus but the customers could not get refund of the booking amount from Ghosh, he said.

After Mukta Bobde lodged a complaint of cheating in August, an SIT consisting of Economic Offences Wing officials was formed.

All the bookings from 2017 onward were scrutinized which revealed that Ghosh had duped the Bobde family of Rs 2.5 crore, the CP said.

He had also not paid bills for solar system installation and some fabrication work, Kumar added.

The SIT had questioned Ghosh during its probe.

On late Tuesday night, SIT officials registered a case at Sitabuldi Police Station in the city under IPC sections 409 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating) and 467 (forgery) against Ghosh and his wife, and arrested Ghosh.

Will not allow NRC in Bengal, says Mamata Banerjee

Bangaon (WB): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday asserted that her government will not allow implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) or National Population Register (NPR) in the state.

Maintaining that all the residents of the state are citizens of the country and no one can change that, Banerjee accused the BJP of trying to play divisive politics using the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Addressing a public meeting here in North 24 Parganas district bordering Bangladesh, she said, “I, as the chief minister, say that you are citizens and no one can change that. We will not allow NRC or NPR.”

Banerjee also claimed that these are the BJP’s ploy to throw people out of the state.

BJP national general secretary and in-charge of West Bengal Kailash Vijayvargiya last week said that the CAA is likely to be implemented from January next year, as the Centre is keen to grant citizenship to the large refugee population in West Bengal.

Wooing the Matua community who hold considerable sway over a number of Assembly constituencies in North 24 Parganas and neighbouring Nadia district, Banerjee said that a slew of development programmes have been taken up for the community.

“We will not allow Bengal to be turned into Gujarat,” the TMC supremo asserted, claiming that the BJP has destroyed the country through its “divisive politics.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought three laws against the interests of farmers to enable corporates to take away their produce at will, Banerjee alleged.

She also alleged that the BJP-led government at the Centre has allowed hoarding of potato, onion and other necessary food items by removing these from the list of essential commodities leading to price rise.

The chief minister accused the BJP of making false allegations over providing monetary relief to the victims of cyclone Amphan.

“Just because one or two elements did some mischief, you (BJP) are seeking the accounts of Amphan relief. How much money have you given that you are asking for it?” she said.

The Calcutta High Court has recently directed the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) to audit cyclone Amphan-related relief amid allegations of irregularities.

“The prime minister made a dramatic visit to Basirhat (after the cyclone) for publicity and announced Rs 1,000 crore (for relief). It is our money which he has simply sent in advance,” she said, claiming that the central government has only given the money from what was due to the state.

She questioned how the Centre asks for accounts when it is the state government which is making roads and providing people with electricity, drinking water and other facilities.

“The central government is denying the state of its GST compensation dues,” she said, while maintaining that the TMC dispensation is going ahead with several development schemes in the state despite its tight financial position.

“Despite such a financial situation, I am giving a lot to the people. If anyone else can do the same, I will resign the same day,” Banerjee said.

A small section of people who waved placards with their demands written on those during the meeting, she urged people not to hurt her.

“If you hurt me, I sometimes feel maybe I should not remain (in the chief ministers post) they don’t want me,” an emotional Banerjee said.

She urged them not to raise placards with demands at her meetings. “You can always write to me and I will look into your issues,” the chief minister said.

Banerjee said that out of the 10 crore population of the state, 9.5 crore are beneficiaries of the schemes of her government.

She claimed that the BJP government at the Centre is selling off and privatising banks, railways, defence, Steel Authority of India (SAIL) and coal mines.

“The central government buys only 70,000 metric tonne of rice from farmers in West Bengal, while it purchases a lot more from several other states,” the chief minister said, accusing it of partisan behaviour.

She said that her government buys 45 lakh metric tonne paddy from farmers of the state to provide them adequate support.

Alleging that the BJP has brought outsiders to the state, who are going door to door to make divisive campaigns, Banerjee said that the saffron party has divided the “Matua family” through its divisive politics.

The NRC and the CAA had led to a sharp division within the Matua Mahasangha, an apex body of the Hindu refugee sect, with one group supporting the TMC and another backing the BJP.

Maintaining that she keeps her words, she said, “I am not like the BJP who makes promises before elections, but runs away later.”

She said that Rs 10 crore was sanctioned for the development of the community and assured them that a holiday would be announced on the birth anniversary of founder Harichand Thakur, the founder of the Matua sect.

New Delhi: Farmer leaders Wednesday rejected a government proposal on the three contentious agriculture-marketing laws, and said they would intensify their agitation against the legislations with a nationwide protest on December 14.

They also said they will block the Jaipur-Delhi and the Delhi-Agra expressways on or before December 12, and all the roads entering into the national capital, one-by-one, if their demands are unmet.

Farmer leader Shiv Kumar Kakka told a press conference here that there was nothing new in the government’s proposal sent to them on Wednesday, and that it was “completely rejected” by the ‘Sanyukta Kisan Committee’.

Farmer leader Jangvir Singh said that their unions may consider if the government sends another proposal.

Kakka said the farmers have decided to intensify their agitation, and that they will block all roads leading to Delhi one by one if the three farm laws are not scrapped.

Another farmer leader, Darshan Pal, said the proposals sent by Union Home Minister Amit Shah contained the same things as Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar told farmer leaders in previous meetings.

All the highways to Delhi will be blocked on December 14 as part of the nationwide protest, he said.

The Union Home Minister had Tuesday evening met 13 representatives of the protesting farmers, but the their talk failed to break the impasse.

The farmers continue to protest at several border points of Delhi, demanding the government scrap all the three laws. The government has been defending these laws, saying they will benefit the farmers in the long run and raise their incomes.

Anti-cow slaughter bill passed in Karnataka Assembly amid

Bengaluru: Amid bedlam, the controversial anti-cow slaughter bill was passed in the Karnataka Assembly on Wednesday, with the Congress members staging a walkout in protest.

The bill known as the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill-2020 seeks a total ban on the slaughter of cows in the state and stringent punishment to those who indulge in smuggling, illegal transportation, atrocities on cows and slaughtering them, BJP sources said.

Besides cows and calves, the bill also intends to protect buffaloes and their calves less than 12 years of age.

There is a provision to set up special courts for the speedy trial of the accused people.

It also makes provision for setting up Goshala or cattle-sheds for the protection of livestock. Police have been given powers to conduct checking.

The law also gives protection to those who protect these livestock. The bill was passed without any discussion as there was din in the House. The Congress later staged a walkout in protest.

Earlier, when Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Chavan tabled the bill in the evening, Congress MLAs led by leader of the opposition Siddaramaiah trooped into the well of the House.

They alleged the bill was not discussed for tabling in the Business Advisory Committee meeting.

“We had discussed yesterday that new bills will not be tabled.We had agreed that only the ordinances will be passed.

Now he (Prabhu Chavan) has all-of-a-sudden introduced this anti-cow slaughter bill,” Siddaramaiah said.

However, Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri said he had clearly said in the meeting that important bills will be tabled on Wednesday and Thursday.

Not convinced with the reply, the Congress MLAs trooped into the well of the House and raised slogans against the BJP government.

The Congress has expressed fears that the bill, if passed, may be misused for polarisation on communal lines and target the minorities.

On the other hand, the BJP has been saying the bill is to protect the cows which are holy to the Hindus.

To make the provisions of the proposed law stringent, Chavan had referred to similar laws in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

A team of officials led by Chavan had recently visited Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, where the law has been enacted, to study its implementation.

Mixed response to Bharat Bandh in Karnataka

BENGALURU: The Bharat Bandh on Tuesday mostly saw mixed response in Karnataka. While the state capital saw thousands of farmers taking out a rally from Town Hall, rallies and protests were held in other districts. Several farmers’ organisations came out in support of the bandh called by the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene as part of the all-India bandh to protest againt the reforms to farm laws by the Centre. Pro-Kannada organisations too backed the shutdown. 

The bandh disrupted normal life as businesses downed their shutters in Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts although the response was mixed in Mandya district. Farmers, joined by Dalit and labour unions, stopped bus services, disrupting movement of long-distance buses from 7 am for an hour. Rallies, demonstrations and protests were also held in Mangaluru, Belagavi, Tumakuru, Vijayapura, hubballi-Dharwad, Davanagere, Chitradurga, Raichur, Bidar, hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Koppal, Kolar and Chikkaballapur.

Though there were demonstrations, the bandh call evoked poor response in hassan. State transport buses, private taxis and autorickshaws were on the roads as usual in the district. In Davanagere and Chitradurga, KSRTC and city bus services besides autorickshaws and cabs remained off the roads, but government offices and banks functioned normally. Crowds, were however, noticeably thinner. In Davanagere, protesters at Jayadeva Circle raised slogans against the Central government and burnt an effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for introducing the farm bills. In Chitradurga town, protesters took out a march and submitted a memorandum at the deputy commissioner’s office.

Farmers to move from streets to Vidhana Soudha

Bandh peaceful in Bengaluru; Central Business District affected, APMC yards shut; clashes, biz hit in some districts

BENGALURU: Tuesday’s Bharat Bandh did not have a major impact on normal life in Bengaluru, but farmers — estimated to be around 10,000 from several organizations — took out rallies and held demonstrations at Town Hall and Mysore Bank Circle, affecting traffic across the Central Business District of the state capital. The protesters blocked Sheshadri Road, Town Hall and Mysuru Bank Circle, shouting slogans against the Central government for enacting the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020.

While larger vegetable markets and the APMC yards remained shut in response to the bandh call, Bengaluru remained normal with shops and commercial establishments open in most parts of the city. 

KSRTC, BMTC and taxi services operated as usual around Majestic, Shanthinagar and Satellite bus stop on Mysuru road. While autorickshaws too plied, they were seen in much reduced numbers than otherwise. 

The police said no farmers were taken into preventive custody as the bandh remained peaceful in the city, and the authorities had made prior arrangements to allow demonstrations and protests only in specific areas like Freedom Park, Town Hall and Mysore Bank Circle, and had diverted traffic accordingly for the purpose. However, that did not stop the protesters from blocking traffic on Sheshadri Road and the approach roads to Town Hall, which caused traffic congestion in the Central Business District.

Youth Congress members were seen approaching shop owners, especially in Shanthinagar area, appealing to them to down their shutters to express their solidarity with the farmers.Meanwhile, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President DK Shivakumar walked with the farmers to extend his support and told the protesters that the Congress party would always stand with the farmers. 

Around 5,000 to 10,000 farmers are likely to converge on Bengaluru on Wednesday morning to lay siege to Vidhana Soudha, even as the winter session of state legislature is on since Monday. Traffic may be affected at KR Circle, Mysuru Bank Circle and Sheshadri Road, as farmers plan to surround Vidhana Soudha after the rally begins from Freedom Park.

Madikeri: Karnataka Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene members on Tuesday hosted a protest rally at Thimmaiah Circle in Madikeri. The rally, however, was denied permission by the Madikeri Town police. A minor rift broke out between the protesting farmers and the policemen, as the latter barred the farmers from creating a human chain. The situation was, however, resolved after the farmers agreed to the cops’ request to not block roads.

Ghazvanid and Noida’s air quality remained “severe” for the fifth day in a row while it stayed “very poor” in Faridabad and Gurgaon, according to a government agency data on Tuesday.

NEW DELHI: Ghaziabad and Noida’s air quality remained “severe” for the fifth day in a row while it stayed “very poor” in Faridabad and Gurgaon, according to a government agency data on Tuesday.

Presence of pollutant PM 2.5 and PM 10 also remained high in the five immediate neighbours of Delhi, according to the air quality index (AQI) maintained by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

According to the index, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’, and 401 and 500 ‘severe’.

The average 24-hour AQI at 4 pm on Tuesday was 424 in Ghaziabad, 407 in Noida and 405 in Greater Noida, 382 in Faridabad and 347 in Gurgaon, according to CPCB’s Sameer app. On Monday, it was 438 in Ghaziabad, 422 in both Noida and Greater Noida, 388 in Faridabad and 357 in Gurgaon.

India’s COVID-19 Update caseload at 3.78 lakh, continues to decline

NEW DELHI: The ongoing trend of contraction of India’s total active COVID-19 cases continues as the active caseload of the country stands at 3,78,909. The share of active cases in the total positive cases has further shrunk to 3.89 per cent.

The daily recoveries exceeding the daily new cases have ensured a total net reduction of the active caseload. A net decline of 4,957 cases has been recorded in the total active cases in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

India has reported more daily recoveries than the daily new cases during the past 24 hours. While 32,080 persons were found positive in the past 24 hours, India has registered 36,635 new recoveries during the same period.

India’s total cumulative tests are nearing 15 crores (14,98,36,767). Keeping in line with its commitment to conduct more than one million tests every day, 10,22,712 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. The testing capacity of the country has grown to 15 lakh tests per day.

India’s testing infrastructure has seen a significant boost with 2,220 labs across the country.

An average of more than 10 lakh tests conducted daily has ensured that the cumulative positivity rate is sustained at low levels and is presently following a downward trajectory.

The cumulative national Positivity Rate stands at 6.50 per cent today. The daily positivity rate is just 3.14 per cent. Higher volumes of testing eventually lead to a low Positivity Rate.

Nineteen States and Union Territories have a weekly positivity rate more than the national average.

Below are the States with the highest cumulative testing along with their respective positivity rates. Uttar Pradesh has the highest cumulative testing with more than 2 crore tests. Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are among the States with the highest cumulative testing with more than 1 crore tests.

The Recovery Rate has also increased to 94.66 per cent. Total Recoveries have surpassed 92 lakhs today (92,15,581).

76.37 per cent of the new recovered cases are observed to be concentrated in 10 States/UTs.

Maharashtra has reported the maximum number of single-day recoveries with 6,365 newly recovered cases. 4,735 people recovered in Kerala in the past 24 hours followed by 3,307 in Delhi.

As many as 75.11 per cent of the new cases are from 10 States and UTs. Kerala continues to report the highest daily new cases at 5,032. It is followed by Maharashtra with 4,026 new cases.

402 case fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours.

Ten States and UT account for 76.37 per cent of new deaths. Delhi saw the maximum casualties (57). Maharashtra and West Bengal follow with 53 and 49 daily deaths, respectively.

Kriti Sanon tests positive for COVID-19

MUMBAI: Actor Kriti Sanon on Wednesday said she has tested positive for coronavirus and is currently under home quarantine.

The 30-year-old actor had recently returned to Mumbai after wrapping up the shoot for her upcoming film with her “Bareilly Ki Barfi” co-star Rajkummar Rao in Chandigarh, following which there were reports she had contracted the disease.

In a statement on Twitter, Sanon said she is following the advice of doctors and officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

“I’d like to inform everyone that I have tested positive for COVID-19. There’s absolutely nothing to worry as I’m feeling fine and have quarantined myself as per BMC and my doctor’s advice,” the actor

Sanon said she will get back to work as soon as she tests negative and thanked her fans for their wishes.

“I’m gonna ride this tide, rest it out and resume work soon. Till then, I’m reading all the warm wishes and they seem to be working. Be safe guys, the pandemic hasn’t gone yet,” she added.

Earlier, the cast of Karan Johar-backed “Jug Jugg Jeeyo”, including Varun Dhawan, Neetu Kapoor, Maniesh Paul and director Raj Mehta also tested positive for COVID-19 while shooting for the film in Chandigarh.
