Sourav Ganguly’s security cover upgraded to Z category

May 17, 2023 by Nasheman

KOLKATA: The West Bengal government has decided to upgrade the security cover of former Indian cricket team captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly to the Z category, a senior official said.

The decision was taken on Tuesday following the expiry of the tenure of Y category security provided to Ganguly.

“As the security cover of the VVIP expired, a review was done as per the protocol and it was decided to raise Ganguly’s security cordon to the Z category,” he said

As per the new security arrangement, the former cricketer will have 8 to 10 police personnel guarding him, the official said.

Under the Y category security cover, Ganguly used to get three policemen from the Special Branch in his cordon and an equal number of law enforcers guarding his Behala residence.

On Tuesday, representatives of the state secretariat reached Ganguly’s Behala office where they held a meeting with officers from Kolkata Police headquarters Lalbazar and the local police station, he added.

“Ganguly is currently travelling with his team Delhi Daredevils and will return to Kolkata on May 21. He will start getting Z category security from that very day,” the official said.

In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Governor C V Ananda Bose and Trinamool Congress MP and national secretary Abhishek Banerjee get Z Plus security while ministers such as Firhad Hakim and Moloy Ghatak have been provided with Z category security.

BJP’s West Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar is also provided with Z Plus security cover along with CISF protection.

Indore man kills 7-year-old son, on pressure from his third wife

May 17, 2023 by Nasheman

BHOPAL: A seven-year-old boy was murdered in his sleep by his father in Madhya Pradsh’s Indore, because of pressure from his stepmother.

The incident happened in Indore’s Tejaji Nagar area on the intervening night of Sunday and middle, as the middle-aged man Shishupal Munde, allegedly asked his son  Pratheek, a Class III student to sleep in his room, which had an air cooler.

The boy usually sleeps with his grandparents. The boy, excited about the cooler, told his grandparents he was going to his father’s room. That was the last they saw him alive.

According to the police, when his son fell asleep, Shishupal turned up the TV volume and strangled him. He allegedly tried to video call his wife, but she didn’t take it.

After killing his young son, Shishupal sent a video to his third wife Payal in MP’s Rajgarh district, to prove that he had killed Prateek, as repeatedly asked by her.

Acting in the matter, the Tejaji Nagar police have arrested the accused man Shishupal and his third wife Payal, (23) who gave birth to a child just three months back.

According to additional DCP (ADCP) JS Bhadauria, the prime accused Shishupal, who drove the car of a respected family in Indore, had married first in 2015 and had a son Prateek from that marriage. His first wife died in 2019, after which he married another woman, but the marriage broke within 15 days.

Two years back, Shishupal married for the third time, this time with Rajgarh district native Payal, who since getting married didn’t want to live with stepson Prateek.

Around 7-8 months back, she returned to her parent’s place and started pressurizing Shishupal regularly to eliminate Prateek if he wanted to live with her. Three months back, she gave birth to a child and since then started exerting more pressure on Shishupal to get rid of seven-year-old Prateek, if he wanted her to return to Indore with the three-month-old child.

The video clip of the murder was found on Shashipal Munde’s mobile phone, the police said.

IPL 2023: Clinical KKR beat CSK by 6 wickets to keep slim hopes alive

May 15, 2023 by Nasheman

CHENNAI: Skipper Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh slammed the fifties apiece en route to a 99-run match-winning stand to guide Kolkata Knight Riders to a comfortable six-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in an Indian Premier League match here on Sunday.

Rana remained unbeaten on 57 off 44 balls while Rinku made 54 off 43 deliveries to set up KKR’s chase of 145 runs after they lost their first three wickets for 33 runs inside the fifth over.

KKR finished at 147 for four in 18.3 overs with Rana leading from the front after making the most of a dropped chance.

KKR’s cause was helped to a large extent by a superb bowling effort earlier by spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, who did superbly and picked up two wickets each.

The defeat also puts on hold CSK’s chances of sealing a play-off berth as the home side is in second spot with 15 points.

KKR, on the other hand, moved to 12 points with a match to play but their hopes rest on other results.

Rana and Rinku, both left-handers, showed necessary skills and patience on a tacky pitch to negate the impact of CSK spinners after the home team had posted a moderate 144 for six in 20 overs.

The match-winning partnership between Rana and Rinku ended when the latter was run out by a direct hit from Moeen Ali.

CSK spinners — Ravindra Jadeja, Maheesh Theekshana and Moeen — could not do any damage after Deepak Chahar had provided the initial breakthroughs to leave KKR at 33 for 3.

CSK struck an early blow when Chahar got Rahmanullah Gurbaz (1) as he failed to keep his square-drive down and was well caught by Tushar Deshpande close to the boundary.

After six overs, KKR were 46 for three with Chahar having picked up all the three wickets to fall — Gurbaz, Jason Roy (12) and Venkatesh Iyer (9).

Rana got a life on 18 when Matheesha Pathirana dropped a catch running in from the boundary off Moeen.

In the 13th over bowled by Moeen, Rana played two superb shots on the off-side to pick up boundaries and followed it up with a few more cracking strikes in the 15th over by Maheesh Theekshana.

Earlier, talismanic Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s decision to drop down the order backfired as CSK lost wickets at regular intervals to be restricted to the modest score.

Dhoni, who came out to bat no.7 position, remained unbeaten on 2 off 3 balls.

Opting to bat, CSK were 72 for five in in the 11th over before Shivam Dube underlined his utility, hammering a 34-ball 48 (1×4, 3x6s) to help the hosts somewhat recuperate in the company of Ravindra Jadeja (20 off 24).

The duo shared 68-run stand for the sixth wicket to take CSK close to the 150-run mark, which at one point of time looked out of reach on a sluggish pitch.

Spin duo of Narine (2/15) and Chakravarthy (2/36) were the pick of the bowlers for KKR and they were ably supported by Shardul Thakur (3-0-15-1) did and Vaibhav Arora (1/30).

CSK were 99 for five after 16 overs as KKR bowlers, especially the spinners, kept things tight and struck at regular intervals.

Narine and Chakravarthy did the damage in the middle of the innings before Dube and Jadeja launched a fightback.

After a quick start, Chakravarthy broke through for KKR, getting Ruturaj Gaikwad (17, 13 balls, 2×4) to edge one to Arora in the fourth over as CSK raced away to 31 in the fourth over.

Devon Conway and Ajinkya Rahane maintained the pace of scoring, despite not going bang-bang, and scored 52 runs in the first six overs.

Conway earned a reprieve when he got a LBW decision overturned via DRS after being adjudged out off Chakravarthy.

Rahane fell trying to force the pace, unable to clear the boundary off Chakravarthy.

Conway top-edged a pull to Rinku Singh in the deep off Thakur after making 30.

Ambati Rayudu’s poor season continued as he fell for just 4 to give Narine his first wicket.

The West Indian spinner then castled a struggling Moeen (1) to reduce CSK to 72 for 5 in the 11th over.

JAIPUR: Captain Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell scored half-centuries to help Royal Challengers Bangalore post a competitive 171 for five against Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League here on Sunday.

Opting to bat, du Plessis (55 off 44) and Maxwell (54 of 33) stitched a 69-run partnership for the second wicket.

But the middle order once again failed to fire as RCB lost four wickets for just 18 runs.

Spinner Adam Zampa and medium pacer KM Asif picked two wickets apiece for Rajasthan.

Brief Scores: Royal Challengers Bangalore: 171 for 5 in 20 overs (Faf du Plessis 55, Glenn Maxwell 54; Adam Zampa 2/25; KM Asif 2/42).

‘Hurt religious sentiments’: Woman shot dead at Gurdwara in Patiala for ‘consuming liquor’

May 15, 2023 by Nasheman

CHANDIGARH: A 33-year old woman was shot dead in Dukh Niwaran Sahib Gurdwara in Patiala late on Sunday night by another devotee as she was allegedly under the influence of liquor and this hurt his religious sentiments.

Sources said that Parminder Kaur had come to the historic gurdwara in Patiala from Zirakpur near Chandigarh was allegedly consuming liquor near the sarovar (holy water tank).

A few devotes objected to her drinking and an attendant (volunteer) Sagar Malhotra stopped her. Kaur got agitated and broke the bottle and hit Malhotra on his arm.

She was over powered by the devotees and taken to the manager’s room. Then manager tried to ask the women her credentials and other details but she did not give a proper reply. Then the police was called by the gurdwara authorities.

While the police personnel were taking Kaur in their custody from the manager’s room, a person standing nearby fired four bullets at her. Kaur died on the spot.

The accused identified as 32-year old Nirmaljit Singh Saini of Urban Estate in Patiala is a property dealer and a regular visitor to gurdwara.

The attendant, Sagar Malhotra, was also injured in the firing. The police have recovered few tobacco packets and a bottle of liquor from the spot where the incident took place, said sources.

Senior Superintendent of Police of Patiala Varun Sharma said, “Prima facie it seems Saini’s religious sentiments were hurt and he fired five rounds at the woman with his 32-bore licensed revolver of this four hit her and she died on the spot, while one bullet hit Malohtra and is injured but out of danger as he was taken to Rajindra Medical Collage and Hospital.’’

“It seems Saini took this step in the heat of the movement as he was regular visitor to the gurdwara and has no criminal back ground, the women was unemployed and alcoholi. We traced her back ground and found a prescription in her bag which was of a private de-addiction centre at Patiala.”

“They told the police that she was undergoing treatment for alcohol addiction and was having mood swings. We are trying to locate the family members or any relatives as no one has come forward to claim her body, as further investigations are going on,’’ said Sharma and added that her mobile has been sent for technical analysis.

He further said that the accused never knew the lady and he took this extreme step in heat of the moment. “The accused Singh has been arrested and the weapon used in the crime has been recovered. The CCTV footage in the gurdwara has been scanned.’’

Meanwhile, additional police has been deployed around the gurdwara premises. A case of murder and arms act has been registered at Anaj Mandi Police station.

Will fight again, against what is wrong: Bilkis Bano on remission given to her rapists

May 15, 2023 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: “I will stand and fight again, against what is wrong and for what is right,” said Bilkis Bano, who has moved the Supreme Court challenging the remission and release of 11 convicts in the 2002 case related to her gangrape and murder of seven members of her family.

Bano was 21 years old and five-month pregnant when she was gangraped while fleeing the 2002 Gujarat riots that broke out after the Godhra train burning incident.

Her three-year-old daughter was among the seven family members killed.

In a statement, issued on Thursday, she said, “The decision to once again stand up and knock on the doors of justice was not easy for me. For a long time, after the men who destroyed my entire family and my life were released, I was simply numb. I was paralysed with shock and with fear for my children, my daughters, and above all, paralysed by loss of hope.”

She added, “But, the spaces of my silence were filled with other voices; voices of support from different parts of the country that have given me hope in the face of unimaginable despair; and made me feel less alone in my pain. I cannot express in words what this support has meant to me.”

Bano said the support to her cause from different parts of the country has helped her in rekindling her faith in humanity and renewed her courage to believe again in the idea of justice.

“So, I will stand and fight again, against what is wrong and for what is right. I do this today for myself, for my children, and for women everywhere”, she said.

BJD’s Deepali Das wins Jharsuguda assembly bypoll defeats BJP rival by over 48K votes

May 15, 2023 by Nasheman

BHUBANESWAR: Along expected lines, the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) retained the Jharsuguda Assembly seat with a big margin of 48,721 votes by trouncing its nearest rival the BJP.

BJD nominee Deepali Das, daughter of slain former minister Naba Kishore Das, secured 1,07,198 votes as against 58,477 votes cornered by BJP candidate Tankadhar Tripathy. Congress candidate Tarun Pandey lost the deposit as he could manage to bag only 4496 votes.

The BJD candidate was leading from the first round and continued her dominance till the final round of the counting making it amply clear that the BJD is still the favourite among the voters.

While the BJD secured 60.93 per cent votes, BJP polled 33.24 per cent votes. The vote share of Congress dropped to 2.56 per cent.

By securing 8,578 more votes than what her late father, a popular leader and a three-time MLA, had polled in the 2019 elections, Deepali proved the opposition’s calculation of making the deteriorating law and order situation a major poll plank wrong.

Though Tankadhar got 5,556 more votes than that of the BJP’s nominee in the last assembly elections, he failed to stop the BJD juggernaut. Congress lost over 14,000 votes. Interestingly, 2073 votes went in favour of NOTA.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik spoke to Deepali over the phone and congratulated her for the resounding victory.

In response to her victory, Deepali said that this was possible due to the love of the voters to her father and the blessings of her father and the Chief Minister.

Dubbing the Chief Minister as a father figure, Deepali said she will continue all the developmental work her father had initiated.

BJP candidate Tankadhar said there was a fight between ‘parishram‘ (hard work) and ‘paisa‘ (money) in the by-poll and the former was defeated by the latter.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan conceded defeat in the Jharsuguda by-election and congratulated Deepali on her victory. He, however, thanked the voters for supporting the BJP and pushing the party’s vote share up.

The by-election was necessitated following the sensational murder of the former Heath Minister Naba Kishore Das by an ASI of police on duty.

Five more cheetahs to be released into open jungles of Kuno National Park by end of May

May 13, 2023 by Nasheman

BHOPAL: Amid the dark shadow of the deaths of three cheetahs in less than 45 days, five of the 17 Namibian and South African cheetahs housed in big enclosures at the Kuno National Park (KNP) are likely to be released into the open jungles of the park in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district by the end of May.

According to highly placed sources at the MP Forest Department in Bhopal, the task force constituted by the central government to monitor the introduction of cheetahs at the KNP has given its nod for the release of at least five more cheetahs, including Namibian and South African felines, into the open jungles.

“We’re working on it and if all goes as planned, then the five cheetahs may be released in the open jungles within the next 15 days,” a senior state forest department official told The New Indian Express on Thursday.

Once in the open jungles, the five cheetahs (possibly three females and two males) will join three Namibian cheetahs – female Aasha and male coalition Elton aka Gaurav and Freddy aka Shaurya, who were among the four cheetahs released into the open jungles in March.

Of the four Namibian cheetahs released into KNP’s open jungles in March, male cheetah Oban aka Pawan had to brought back into the big enclosure of the KNP (and is now housed in a big enclosure with two females), as it was regularly straying out of the KNP and causing panic to human habitats in adjoining villages.

As per informed sources, the central government task force monitoring cheetah introduction at KNP has in consultation with South African experts and specialists from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) decided to okay the release of five more cheetahs into the jungles after closely monitoring their behavioural patterns.

The KNP, which had welcomed 20 African cheetahs in two batches (eight from Namibia on September 17, 2022 and 12 from South Africa on February 18, 2023) as part of the country’s ambitious project to reintroduce the fastest moving animal on earth in the Indian wilds 70 years after their extinction, now has just 17 cheetahs (seven from Namibia and 10 from South Africa) and four cubs born to Namibian female Siyaya aka Jwala on March 29.

The KNP has already lost three cheetahs including two females in less than 45 days. While Namibian female Sasha died of acute renal infection on March 27, South African male Uday died due to cardiopulmonary failure on April 23 and South African female Daksha died reportedly due to violent mating by the duo Vayu and Agni on May 9.
