Two arrested in Tumkur triple murder case, manhunt on for six others: Tumkuru SP

Tumkur District Superintendent of Police Ashok K.V. addressed a press conference on Monday, revealing significant progress in the investigation into the murder of three men from Belthangady in Dakshina Kannada. Ashok K.V. announced the arrest of two individuals and disclosed ongoing efforts to apprehend six others connected to the crime.

He provided details of the incident, stating that on March 22, at approximately 1:15 PM, the charred bodies of three individuals were discovered in a car submerged in Kucchangi Lake within the Kora Police Station limits. Subsequently, law enforcement launched an investigation at the scene and initiated a case.

Through meticulous examination of the evidence gathered at the site, along with local intelligence and scientific methods utilized for body identification, the deceased individuals were identified as Isaac (54), Shahul Hameed (45), and Abdul Khader (34) from Belthangady. Two suspects, Pataraju (35) and Gangaraju (35) of Sira Gate, were detained and interrogated in connection with the case.

Ashok K.V. elaborated on the motive behind the crime, revealing that the victims had engaged in a treasure hunt with Pataraju for a duration of 6-7 months, entrusting him with a significant sum of 6 lakhs. When the anticipated treasure remained undiscovered even after an extended period, and Pataraju failed to reimburse the money, the victims threatened legal action.

Under mounting pressure, Pataraju, in collusion with Gangaraju and six accomplices – Madhusudhan, Naveen, Krishna, Ganesh, Kiran, and Simon – orchestrated a plan to lure the victims to Biranakallu village, where they were subsequently murdered. The perpetrators then attempted to conceal their crime by setting fire to the vehicle containing the victims’ bodies.

Tumkur Inspector General of Police Ravikanthe Gowda and District Superintendent of Police Ashok K.V. commended the diligent efforts of the Tumkur Police in apprehending the accused individuals involved in the heinous crime.

DYFI accuses Mangaluru MLA Vedavyasa Kamath of TDR scam

DYFI accuses Mangaluru MLA Vedavyasa Kamath of TDR scam

Mangaluru: On Monday, Muneer Katipalla, the state president of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), leveled allegations against Mangaluru MLA Vedavyasa Kamath, accusing him of involvement in a Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) scam. Katipalla called upon the state government to halt the proceedings and initiate an investigation into the matter.

Katipalla highlighted concerns regarding the TDR process, stating that under normal circumstances, land transactions must involve the direct participation of the legitimate landowner. However, he questioned the Mangaluru Municipality’s acquisition of 10.8 acres of land adjacent to the Pachanadi waste dump through an agreement holder named Giridhar Shetty.

Allegations surfaced suggesting that Shetty had entered into an agreement with the actual landowner to purchase the property for a total sum of 7 crores, with an initial advance payment of 1 crore already made. However, Katipalla revealed discrepancies in the TDR land sale agreement, indicating an inflated valuation of 50 crores. This, according to him, implied an intent to invest a nominal amount while unlawfully profiting from a significant margin.

Katipalla further implicated Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) Commissioner Mansoor Ali, alleging that Ali, upon recognizing the technical irregularities in the deal, refused to endorse the agreement and pledged to inform the government. However, purportedly under pressure from MLA Vedavyasa Kamath, Ali was coerced into signing the document. Subsequently, Ali’s resistance reportedly triggered an investigation by the Lokayukta against him.

Demanding a comprehensive inquiry into the matter, Katipalla urged the government to probe the alleged malpractice and bring those responsible to justice.

Sonam Wangchuk expresses disappointment over govt’s lack of response to his ‘Climate fast’

Sonam Wangchuk expresses disappointment over govt’s lack of response to his 'Climate fast'
Renowned climate activist and educationalist, Sonam Wangchuk

Renowned climate activist and educationalist, Sonam Wangchuk, expressed disappointment on Monday over what he perceives as a lack of response from the Union government to his ongoing ‘Climate fast’, now in its 20th day. The fast aims to highlight the demands of Ladakh, a region in northern India. Wangchuk took to social media to share updates on his health and the public response to his hunger strike.

Feeling tired and experiencing body aches, Wangchuk revealed that he has been surviving solely on water and salt during the fast, even after addressing gatherings to amplify Ladakh’s demands. Despite his physical challenges, Wangchuk expressed gratitude towards ordinary citizens for their support, emphasizing his faith in the nation and its leaders.

Acknowledging the support of thousands who have joined him in the hunger strike, Wangchuk remarked that he believes their message will reach top government officials, including the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and the President. He expressed optimism that the government would eventually recognize Ladakh’s demands and take appropriate action.

Wangchuk is advocating for Ladakh’s inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, along with statehood. Additionally, he is calling for separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil districts, exclusive land and job rights, and the establishment of a public service commission. Concerns have been raised regarding the vulnerability of Ladakh’s ecosystem to industrial exploitation under its current Union Territory status.

The Sixth Schedule of the Constitution provides protections for land and nominal autonomy for tribal areas. However, following the abolition of Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional status in 2019, Ladakh was granted Union Territory status. Wangchuk has expressed concerns that without statehood, Ladakh could be governed by a bureaucracy under New Delhi’s supervision.

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday attacked former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay over his reported remark that he “cannot choose between Gandhi and Godse” and demanded that his candidature for the Lok Sabha polls from the BJP be withdrawn.

Gangopadhyay, who joined the BJP recently, was among the 19 candidates whose names were announced by the BJP on Sunday for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal.

In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “It is worse than pathetic that a judge of the Calcutta High Court, who resigned to contest the Lok Sabha polls as a BJP candidate blessed by none other than the prime minister, now says that he cannot choose between Gandhi and Godse.”

“This is totally unacceptable and his candidature should be withdrawn forthwith by those who spare no effort to appropriate the Mahatma’s legacy,” Ramesh asserted.

“What will the Father of the Do-nation do to protect the Father of the Nation?” he said.

Speaking with AajTak Bangla, Gangopadhyay, was quoted as saying that he “cannot choose between (Mahatma) Gandhi and (Naturam) Godse” and said he felt compelled to delve into the reasoning behind Godse’s actions.

“As someone from the legal profession, I must try and understand the other side of the story. I must read his (Nathuram Godse) writings and understand what triggered him to kill Mahatma Gandhi. Until then, I cannot choose between Gandhi and Godse,” he was quoted as saying.

While Gangopadhyay condemned Mahatma Gandhi’s murder, he underscored the “necessity of examining all facets of historical events”.

Somanna says Hegde lost ticket due to his ‘Changing Constitution’ statement

Somanna says Hegde lost ticket due to his ‘Changing Constitution’ statement
V Somanna, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Tumkur Lok Sabha constituency

In Turuvekere on Monday, V Somanna, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Tumkur Lok Sabha constituency, addressed the media, shedding light on the denial of ticket to MP Anantkumar Hegde this time around. Somanna attributed Hegde’s exclusion from the ticket to his repeated statements regarding the alteration of the Constitution.

Reflecting on Hegde’s political career as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Uttar Kannada, Somanna remarked that the constituency had not witnessed significant development during his six-term tenure. Somanna criticized Hegde for primarily focusing on issues related to Hindutva and advocating for changes to the Constitution rather than actively engaging in developmental initiatives.

“Despite serving as an MP for approximately 28 years, Anantkumar Hegde’s tenure did not yield notable developmental outcomes for the constituency,” Somanna asserted. He further highlighted Hegde’s conspicuous absence from public engagements following his victory in the 2019 elections and his lack of involvement in party organization activities.

Somanna underscored that Hegde’s controversial remarks regarding the alteration of the Constitution had repeatedly caused embarrassment to the BJP. These collective factors, according to Somanna, led to the party’s decision to withhold the ticket from Hegde for the upcoming elections.
