MP: Five cops suspended for changing vehicle seized in accident

March 18, 2024 by Nasheman

Sagar (MP): Five police officials were suspended for allegedly seizing a vehicle involved in an accident and later replacing it with another one in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district, an official said on Sunday.

Sagar’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Tiwari said Civil Lines police station in-charge Ajay Pratap and four other policemen have been suspended following a confidential complaint.

A boy was killed in an accident earlier this year and the police had seized a vehicle that was involved and did not have a licence plate number, he said.

However, these officials allegedly later replaced the vehicle with another one in their records, the official said.

The policemen were found guilty in the initial investigation, and the probe is on and the accused officials will also be heard, he said.

Further legal steps will be taken if they are found guilty in the probe, the SP said.

INDIA bloc’s fight not against Modi personally but against ideology of hate: Tejashwi Yadav

INDIA bloc's fight not against Modi personally but against ideology of hate: Tejashwi Yadav

Mumbai: Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday said the INDIA alliance’s fight was not against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah personally but against the ideology of hate.

Speaking at the INDIA bloc’s rally in Shivaji Park here, the former Bihar deputy chief minister said the need was to protect the diversity and brotherhood in the nation.

“Modi is a manufacturer, wholesaler and distributor of lies, but truthful people like us are not scared,” he asserted, adding that those in the Maharashtra government are “dealers and not leaders”.

The ruling alliance in the state comprises the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, the BJP and the Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party.

“In Maharashtra, only MLAs are made to defect but in Bihar they (BJP) hijacked my chacha,” he said, an apparent reference to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar changing sides and returning to the NDA after dumping the RJD.

Governments are being toppled with help of ED and CBI, Yadav said.

Launched Bharat Jodo yatras to highlight issues troubling common man: Rahul Gandhi at INDIA rally

Launched Bharat Jodo yatras to highlight issues troubling common man: Rahul Gandhi at INDIA rally

Mumbai: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said he was compelled to launch his Bharat Jodo yatras to highlight rising unemployment, inflation and hatred in society.

Addressing the opposition INDIA bloc rally at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park after the conclusion of his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, Gandhi said Prime Minister Narendra Modi won’t be able to win the Lok Sabha elections without “EVMs, ED, CBI and Income Tax”.

“Modi is a mask’ who works for a shakti’ (power). He is a shallow man who doesn’t have a 56-inch chest,” Gandhi said.

The former Congress president alleged that PM Modi had a “monopoly over corruption”.

“Do you think the Shiv Sena and NCP people split and joined the ruling alliance just like that,” he asked.

While Eknath Shinde led a split in the Shiv Sena in 2022 and aligned with the BJP to become the Maharashtra chief minister, Ajit Pawar triggered a similar upheaval in the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) last year.

Gandhi also claimed that a leader from Maharashtra cried in front of his mother Sonia Gandhi, saying he felt ashamed that he could not “fight this power any more and didn’t want to go to jail”.

He claimed Modi can’t win elections “without EVMs (electronic voting machines)”.

“We asked the Election Commission of India to count the VVPAT (Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail) also. But our demand hasn’t been accepted,” he said.

In a show of strength, leaders of several constituents of the opposition INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) grouping assembled here for the mega rally ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, which will be held in seven phases starting April 19.

Akhilesh Yadav congratulates Rahul Gandhi for his ‘strong determination’, calls him ‘rare person’

Akhilesh Yadav congratulates Rahul Gandhi for his 'strong determination', calls him 'rare person'

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday congratulated former Congress president Rahul Gandhi for his “strong determination” on the occasion of the conclusion of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, and described him as a “rare person”.

Rahul Gandhi concluded his 63-day-old Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Mumbai by paying tributes to Dr B R Ambedkar at his memorial Chaityabhoomi in central Mumbai and reading the Preamble of the Constitution.

On Sunday, Akhilesh Yadav along with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav was scheduled to take part in the event. However, the SP chief did not attend the event.

In a letter dated March 17, written to Gandhi by Yadav, the SP chief said, “Today your Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is concluding in Mumbai. Rare are those people, who can take out such ‘yatra’. Heartiest congratulations to you for your strong determination.

“You started this yatra from Manipur, which is burning due to the failure of the BJP government. You have given a strong message against the dictator government from the north-east. During the course of the entire yatra, you met (people from) all the sections of the society, including farmers, youngsters, women, elderly and you got acquainted with their problems very closely,” Yadav said.

The SP chief went on to say, “The Election Commission yesterday announced the elections. Nominations will begin in UP from March 20, and owing to its preparations, I will not be able to attend the closing programme of the yatra.

“Not only hopeful, but fully confident that the public will uproot and throw out the BJP, which is against the farmers, youngsters, backwards, Dalits and women. The real success of the yatra will be that the BJP gets defeated in these elections,” Yadav said.

The former Congress president was accompanied by his sister and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday.

The yatra, which commenced from strife-torn Manipur on January 14, entered Mumbai from neighbouring Thane on the 63rd day on Saturday.

On February 21, INDIA bloc partners SP and Congress announced a tie-up for the Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, with the UP’s main opposition party leaving 17 out of the 80 seats in the state for the ally.

In Madhya Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party will contest on a single seat, Khajuraho, and support the Congress in the remaining constituencies in the state.

Among the 17 seats on which the Congress will contest in UP include Rae Bareli and Amethi, once considered pocket boroughs of the party, and Varanasi which is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency.

RCB beat Delhi Capitals by 8 wickets to lift WPL title

New Delhi: A clinical Royal Challengers Bangalore won the Women’s Premier League 2024 title with an eight-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals in the final here on Sunday.

Batting first, DC were bowled out for 113 in 18.3 overs. RCB chased down the target of 114 with three balls to spare, much to the disappointment of the weekend crowd that turned out to support the home team.

With Shafali Verma (44 off 27 balls) going great guns, DC were cruising at 64 for no loss in 43 balls before they committed harakiri, losing 10 wickets for just 49 runs.

Spinners Shreyanka Patil (4/12) and Sophie Molineux (3/20) helped RCB stage a remarkable recovery after Shafali’s exploits at the top of the order.

Brief scores:

Delhi Capitals: 113 all out in 18.3 overs (Shafali Verma 44; Shreyanka Patil 4/12, Sophie Molineux 3/20).

Royal Challengers Bangalore: 115 for two in 19.3 overs (Smriti Mandhana 31, Sophie Devine 32, Ellyse Perry 35 not out)

Cabinet meet: PM Modi asks ministers to draft roadmap for first 100 days, next 5 years of new govt

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday told ministers to draft a roadmap for the first 100 days and next five years for new government, sources said.

Chairing a Cabinet meeting here this morning, the PM also asked them to meet secretaries and other officials of their respective ministries to discuss how the agenda for the first 100 days and the next five years can be better implemented.

The meeting took place a day after the Election Commission announced schedule for the Lok Sabha polls 2024.

The Cabinet also initiated the process of notifying the dates of the seven-phase parliamentary elections by sending the Election Commission’s recommendation to President Droupadi Murmu.

The first notification will be issued on March 20 for the first phase of polls on April 19 on 102 seats. The nomination process begins for a particular phase with the issuance of the notification.

Prime Minister Modi and his Council of Ministers had on March 3 had brainstormed over the vision document for “Viksit Bharat: 2047” and a detailed action plan for the next five years.

A 100-day agenda for immediate steps to be taken after a new government is formed in June was deliberated upon during the daylong meeting of the Council.

Sources had then said that the roadmap for “Viksit Bharat” was a result of more than two years of intensive preparation and entailed a “whole-of-government” approach involving all ministries and wide-ranging consultations with state governments, academia, industry bodies, civil society, scientific organisations and mobilisation of youths for inputs.

“More than 2,700 meetings, workshops and seminars were held at various levels. Suggestions of more than 20 lakh youths were received,” an official had said.

I got injections, blood removed from ankle: Pandya recalls painful recuperation after WC injury

I got injections, blood removed from ankle: Pandya recalls painful recuperation after WC injury

Mumbai: In his desperation to regain fitness for the remaining World Cup matches last year, India all-rounder Hardik Pandya said he resorted to extreme measures like taking multiple injections and removing blood clots from his ankle but pushing the boundaries only aggravated the injury, forcing him to sit out of the showpiece.

Pandya injured his ankle during India’s fourth World Cup game against Bangladesh while bowling his first over of that match, and had to limp off the field with the help of the team physio. He did not play any further part in the tournament.

“I got injections done on my ankles at three different places and I had to remove blood from my ankle because of the swelling. I didn’t want to give up (on playing the remainder of the World Cup); for the team I will give my best. If there is one percent chance that I can be with the team I will try my best,” Pandya told Star Sports.

However, Pandya said he was aware that pushing himself hard could bring adverse results, but that’s the risk he took to be with the team during a home World Cup.

“I was aware that (if) I keep pushing myself I might get injured for (a) long time. For me, that was never the answer.

“While I was pushing myself, I had this re-occurrence (of injury) and it became a three-month injury. I was not able to walk but I was trying to run (at) that point of time,” Pandya recalled.

At that time, the 30-year-old was confident of coming back in five days, but the recuperation took much longer than he expected.

“When I came out (of the field following injury), I informed team that I will be back in five days. I tried to push myself for 10 days, took pain-killers to make a comeback and rejoin the team. But this was a freak injury and very few people know about it.

“My injury got extended and I had to take more time because when I got injured, it was a 25-day rehab injury,” he added.

Pandya said that not being able to play fully in the World Cup would always weigh heavily on his heart.

“For me the biggest pride is to play for the country. This was my baby; playing the World Cup at home is my child. So, I wanted to be there for them (the team).

Nonetheless, whether we win or not, all I wanted (was) to be there for my child. Obviously, I missed out and that is something which is always going to (be) heavy on my heart,” he detailed.

Pandya said he had started preparations for the 50-over World Cup more than a year in advance.

“I am such (a) kind of cricketer who doesn’t start 2-3 months before; I started my journey one year back for this World Cup. I already planned my routine one-and-half year before and worked accordingly.”

But now, Pandya, who had led Gujarat Titans to IPL title in 2022, has another heavy job at his hands, leading five-time champions Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024.

“From my journey as a young lad in Baroda to Mumbai, this city has taught me growth, instilling in me humility and resilience. The city’s love and teachings are invaluable to me, shaping me into the cricketer I am today.

“Mumbai always challenges you to be better and now with the IPL, I have returned home after two years,” he said.

Pandya had joined the Titans ahead of the 2022 season, but he returned to Mumbai before this edition and replaced Rohit Sharma as the team’s captain.

The Baroda man said the IPL 2015 season with MI was pivotal to transforming his career.

“Coming from Baroda, it was a life-changing experience for me when I remember the 2015 IPL. That year was pivotal in my career. Representing Mumbai Indians amidst seasoned players was a turning point for me. When you get a chance to play with such established players on such a big platform, your life changes.

“I was fortunate enough that I was able to contribute on a much larger scale in the knockout games. Bagging two ‘Man of the Match’ awards during crucial knockout games was surreal. It marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey for me.”

Kejriwal skips ED summons in money laundering case linked to DJB

March 18, 2024 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday skipped the ED summons in a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in the Delhi Jal Board.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also termed the summons “illegal” and accused the BJP government at the Centre of using the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to target Kejriwal.

The ED had summoned Kejriwal for questioning on Monday 18 in a money laundering probe linked to alleged irregularities in the DJB. This is the second case registered under the anti-money laundering law in which the 55-year-old politician, also the AAP national convenor, has been summoned.

He is already facing summons for questioning in the Delhi excise policy-linked money laundering case. Kejriwal has skipped eight summonses in this case till now, terming them illegal.

A fresh and ninth such notice in the excise policy case stipulates him to appear before an ED investigating officer on March 21.

Karnataka reeling under acute water crisis, Modi govt refusing to help people

March 18, 2024 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday said Karnataka is reeling under an acute water crisis due to a severe drought situation in most parts and accused the Modi government of refusing to help the people of the state.

Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh’s attack on the government came on a day Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address a public meeting in Shivamogga.

“The prime minister is in Shivamogga, Karnataka today. We hope he addresses some of the key issues in the state in his address,” he said.

Ramesh said Karnataka is reeling under an acute water crisis due to a severe drought situation in most parts of the state, with 223 of the state’s 236 Talukas facing drought conditions.

“The state government has requested the Modi Sarkar to release funds of Rs 18,172 crore for drought relief. Why has the Modi Sarkar refused to help Karnataka’s people so far?” he said in a post on X.

To help alleviate the drought-related stress on the rural economy, the Karnataka government has sought to increase the number of working days under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) from 100 to 150, the Congress leader said.

“There is a provision in the scheme to do so during periods of drought. However, the Modi Sarkar has not only failed to approve the extension of the scheme, it has also failed to release Rs. 1600 crore towards the payment of wages to those working under MGNREGS,” Ramesh said.

When is the Modi government going to pay Karnataka’s MGNREGS workers their wages, he asked.

“Since taking office in 2023, the Karnataka government’s efforts to provide an additional 5 kgs of rice to poor families through its Anna Bhagya Scheme have been disrupted by the Modi government,” he said.

After initially agreeing to sell the Karnataka government the 2.28 lakh metric tonnes of rice required to meet the demands of the scheme at Rs 34 per kg, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has since refused to sell rice to the Karnataka government, he alleged.

“As of November 2023, the FCI’s rice stocks were twice the amount of rice it needed to hold as a buffer – and its attempts to sell rice in the private markets have not been successful. Is the FCI’s refusal to sell rice to the State Government of Karnataka, an obvious solution to its current problems, merely a case of political vendetta?” Ramesh said.

The Congress leader further said Shivamogga is the Lok Sabha segment represented by B Y Raghavendra, son of former BJP Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa.

“The Karnataka State BJP Chief is B.Y. Vijayendra, another son of former BJP Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa. While in Shivamogga today, the prime minister should clarify what is the BJP’s stance on ‘dynasty’ in politics?” he said and asked the PM to break his “silence” on these issues.
