Lifter Achinta Sheuli caught entering women’s hostel at night, expelled from national camp

Lifter Achinta Sheuli caught entering women's hostel at night, expelled from national camp

New Delhi: Commonwealth Games gold medallist weightlifter Achinta Sheuli has been expelled from the Paris Olympics preparatory camp after he was caught entering the women’s hostel at night at NIS Patiala.

The disciplinary breach occurred on Thursday night. The 22-year-old, who competes in the men’s 73kg weight class, was caught by security personnel, who made a video of the lifter.

“Obviously, such indiscipline will not be tolerated. Achinta was asked to leave the camp immediately,” an Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) official told PTI on condition of anonymity.

The Sports Authority of India and NIS Patiala Executive Director Vineet Kumar were immediately made aware of the incident. Since there was video evidence of the incident, SAI did not constitute an investigating panel.

“The video was sent to NIS Patiala ED Vineet Kumar and the SAI headquarters in New Delhi and IWLF was asked to remove Achinta from the camp,” a SAI source said.

Sheuli, who won the gold medal at the 2022 Birmingham CWG with a Games record, left the camp on Friday.

The facility in Patiala has separate hostels for men and women athletes. Currently, women boxers, athletes and wrestlers are stationed at the NIS.

This is not the first time the IWLF has taken strict action against a lifter for a disciplinary breach. CWG and Youth Olympics champion Jeremy Lalrinnunga was evicted from the national camp on grounds of indiscipline before.

Sheuli out of Olympic race

Following his expulsion, Sheuli’s chances of qualifying for the Olympics have also ended as he will not be travelling for this month’s IWF World Cup in Phuket, Thailand, which is a mandatory event for Paris Games qualification.

Sheuli is currently placed 27th in the Olympic qualification rankings and had a chance of making the cut via the continental quota.

“It is such a pity because he had actually started getting back on track after his injury,” the source added.

Only Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu (49kg) and CWG silver medallist Bindyarani Devi remain in contention for the Paris Games.

The two will be travelling to Thailand later this month to take part in the IWF World Cup.

The tournament will mark Chanu’s return to competition after suffering a hip tendinitis injury in August last year.

Under the 2024 Olympic qualification rule, a lifter has to compulsorily compete in the 2023 World Championships and the 2024 World Cup.

Apart from the above, the lifters also have to participate in three of the following events — the 2022 World Championships, the 2023 Continental Championships, the 2023 Grand Prix 1, the 2023 Grand Prix II and the 2024 Continental Championships.

IPL will be entirely held in India: BCCI secretary Jay Shah

March 17, 2024 by Nasheman

New Delhi: BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Saturday dismissed speculation that the IPL would be shifted to the UAE due to the upcoming general elections in the country between April 19 to June 1.

There were endless rumours about the IPL being shifted to the Emirates due to the elections which will be held in seven phases with the reports filling social media about players being asked to deposit their passports with respective franchises.

However, Shah set the record straight.

“The entire IPL will be held in India. We will be formulating the remaining schedule very soon and announce it.

The schedule for the first two weeks has been already released with defending champions Chennai Super Kings taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore at home on March 22.

In earlier conversations with PTI, BCCI secretary Shah had categorically maintained that the full tournament will be held in India, just like it happened in 2019, the year of previous Lok Sabha election. They were only waiting for the Election Commission to announce the poll dates.

In the morning, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal had also said there was no chance of shifting the IPL out of the country and all the reports of the tournament being held in UAE were baseless.

However, the league was moved out of the country during the general elections in 2014 when the UPA government was in power. Then the first phase was held in the UAE before returning to India for the second phase.

ED issues fresh summons to Delhi CM Kejriwal

March 17, 2024 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate has issued fresh summons to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for questioning on March 21 in the excise policy linked money laundering case, official sources said Sunday.

The 55-year-old national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been asked to depose at the central agency’s office in central Delhi.

The ninth summons have been issued so that Kejriwal’s statement can be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said.

The CM has repeatedly refused to appear in response to these summons, calling them illegal.

A Delhi court on Saturday had granted bail to Kejriwal on two complaints filed by the agency against him for skipping six of the previous eight summons in this case.

The agency arrested BRS leader K Kavitha in this case two days back.

Reluctance of ministers to enter fray puts K’taka Cong in spot of bother in selection of candidates

Reluctance of ministers to enter fray puts K'taka Cong in spot of bother in selection of candidates

Bengaluru : Reluctance of some ministers and lawmakers in Karnataka to contest the Lok Sabha polls seems to have put the Congress scouting for “winnable” candidates in a spot of bother in finalising contestants for bulk of the seats.

It has been ten days since the Congress announced its candidates for seven segments while the process to pick nominees for the remaining 21 seats is on.

The Congress’ first list released on March eight did not have names of any of the ministers and legislators.

According to party sources, the Congress leadership has been making efforts to convince some ministers and lawmakers to contest, as they have faced problems in identifying winnable candidates in several segments.

Senior Congress leader and Home Minister G Parameshwara had recently said there are discussions in the party to field seven to eight ministers.

Some ministers instead of themselves contesting, are said to be pushing for the candidature of their family members and, according to sources, the party leadership seem to be worried about the message it may send out if their kin are fielded.

It is now left for the Congress leadership including president Mallikarjun Kharge and party senior leader and MP Rahul Gandhi to take a call on the issue of fielding ministers or their family members, party sources said.

State Congress President and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Saturday said the process of selecting candidates has come to a final stage.

“Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra has ended today (Saturday), tomorrow there is an INDIA bloc leaders public meeting, and on March 19 there is our meeting (to finalise candidates). On March 19 night or 20th morning, all our candidates will be announced,” he said.

According to sources, the Congress is keen on fielding Cabinet Ministers H C Mahadevappa from Chamarajanagar, K H Muniyappa from Kolar, B Nagendra from Bellary, Satish Jarkiholi from Belgaum, Eshwar Khandre from Bidar, and Krishna Byre Gowda from Bangalore North.

Almost all these ministers are reluctant to fight the polls and some are said to have suggested the names of their family members, with assurances that they will ensure their victory.

Gowda is said to have told the party leadership that he doesn’t want to contest. He lost from Bangalore North in 2019 and in 2009, from Bangalore South.

Mahadevappa is said to be insisting on Chamarajanagar ticket for his son Sunil Bose.

Parameshwara, who was earlier the party state unit president, had recently said, “He (Mahadevappa) is saying that he doesn’t want to contest and the ticket be given to his son. Party will ultimately decide whether it will be Mahadevappa or his son or someone else. He cannot be pressured if he doesn’t want to (contest).”

Another senior Minister Muniyappa, a seven-time MP and a former central minister, who returned to state politics after losing 2019 Lok Sabha polls, is said to have pitched his son-in-law Shashidhar J E for the Kolar seat.

Similarly, names of Satish Jarkiholi’s daughter Priyanka Jarkiholi for Chikkodi, Laxmi Hebbalkar’s son Mrinal Hebbalkar for Belgaum, Nagendra’s brother Venkatesh Prasad for Bellary, and Eshwar Khandre’s son Sagar Khandre for Bidar, are doing rounds.

The Congress had initially tasked ministers with identifying potential candidates but Shivakumar had said that reports received were not satisfactory.

He had also said that the party has decided to commission one more survey to identify winnable candidates.

A Congress leader said having faced a rout in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls which saw the defeat of several top leaders – including M Mallikarjun Kharge, Veerappa Moily, and Muniyappa – despite the party being in power in the state in alliance with JD(S), many senior leaders don’t want to enter the fray, as the outfit’s prospects at the national level still don’t look promising.

The Congress’ performance in this election is another key test of sorts for Shivakumar, who has made no secret of his ambition to become chief minister, amid speculations of change in guard mid-way of the Assembly term.

The BJP has already announced its candidates for 20 seats. It is yet to make an announcement for eight seats out of which three – Mandya, Hassan and Kolar – are likely to go into the kitty of its alliance partner JD(S).

Karnataka has a total of 28 Lok Sabha constituencies. The BJP won 25 seats in the 2019 general elections, while an independent backed by the party had also emerged victorious.

The Congress and JD(S), which were running a coalition government back then and fought the elections together, secured one seat each.

Karnataka cabinet decides on acquiring Palace Grounds land for road widening

March 15, 2024 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: The Karnataka cabinet on Thursday decided that it will require the Palace Grounds land for road widening purposes, ahead of a contempt case regarding the matter coming up for hearing in the Supreme Court.

The cabinet also decided to give Transferable Development Rights (TDR) against the acquisition of land, Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda told reporters.

According to the minister, the apex court has sought the personal presence of Chief Secretary and Additional Chief Secretary in the Urban Development Department and the Commissioner of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the urban local body governing Bengaluru city.

He said that in 2006, the Karnataka government had decided to acquire 15.5 acres of Palace Grounds near Mekhri Circle for road widening.

Accordingly a compound wall was built inside the Palace Grounds, but the previous BJP government decided that it did not require it.

The Mysuru Royal family approached the Supreme Court against the government decision saying that in 2006-07 the compound wall was built inside the palace grounds for acquisition of land, but now they do not need it for road widening.

“The SC converted the case into a contempt of court case. Since the land has been acquired, compensation has to be paid. The Court directed the government to come to a conclusion if the land was required or not,” Gowda said.

The minister said that in 1996, Karnataka government through a law declared the Palace Grounds as a park and open space. The law was upheld by the High Court.

However, the Mysuru Royal family filed a case in the Supreme Court challenging the Act, which ordered a status quo, he explained.
Gowda said the CM on Thursday sought to know why the matter was continuing as a status quo.

“The Chief Minister said the government did not fight the case strongly. He even asked them to hire good lawyers to present our original suit. Once the original suit is resolved, all the other cases will be disposed of,” the minister said.

‘Lottery King’ under investigation for money laundering emerges as top buyer of electoral bonds

New Delhi: A recent analysis of data released by the Election Commission of India has uncovered India’s leading lottery company, led by a controversial businessman, as the primary purchaser of electoral bonds. Among other notable buyers are Hyderabad-based infrastructure giant Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited, a Reliance-linked company QwikSupply Chain, mining conglomerate Vedanta, and a subsidiary of the Kolkata-based Sanjiv Goenka group, among others.

Future Gaming and Hotel Services, a prominent lottery giant, emerged as the top purchaser, acquiring 1,208 bonds amounting to Rs 1,208 crore. The company, with a turnover of Rs 7,000 crore, is headed by Martin Santiago, commonly known as ‘Lottery King’ Martin. However, Future Gaming has been under investigation for alleged money laundering activities.

Following closely behind is the Megha group of companies, which includes Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) and Western U.P. Power Transmission Company Ltd (WUPPTCL). MEIL purchased 966 bonds, each worth Rs 1 crore, totaling Rs 966 crore, while WUPPTCL acquired bonds worth Rs 220 crore, bringing the Megha Engineering’s total contribution to Rs 1,186 crore. The Hyderabad-based Megha group has secured numerous government projects, notably including roles in the Rs 1.15 lakh crore Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project in Telangana and the Rs 14,400 crore Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel Project in Maharashtra.

Qwik Supply Chain Private Limited, headquartered in Maharashtra, emerged as another significant buyer, acquiring bonds worth Rs 410 crore. Notably, one of the company’s directors, Tapas Mitra, also holds directorial positions in various Reliance-affiliated entities.

Other notable purchasers include Haldia Energy Limited, Vedanta Limited, and Yashoda Super Speciality Hospital based in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad.

This report is part of a collaborative effort involving three news organisations – Newslaundry, Scroll, The News Minute – and freelance journalists and is subject to further developments.

‘Gas Bomb’ in the Parliament made Pratap Simha lose ticket, says Minister Ramalingareddy
Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalingareddy

Bengaluru: Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalingareddy has said that the BJP Member of Parliament for Mysore-Kodagu constituency Pratap Simha was denied ticket for issuing passes to those who threw bombs in the parliament. He was addressing the media people in the Vidhana Soudha on Thursday.

“I knew that MP Pratap Simha would not get a ticket. He had given the passes to those attackers. And he was always giving unwanted statements against our government just to oppose us”, he stated.

Ramalingareddy opined that BJP had gone bankrupt as it had given ticket to a member of the royal family, in spite of having many good leaders from Mysore who have worked for the party for years.

“DK Suresh is an able Congress MP from Bangalore Rural. I shall go for campaigning in Ramanagara as I am the District Minister there. In the same way, I shall go to Bangalore South once the candidate is announced for the constituency,” he added.

Asserting that he was a good friend of Pratap Simha, Labour Minister Santhosh Lad said “Unfortunately, did not get the ticket this time which is sad. He has worked hard for the party. He might have had a wrong idea that making derogatory remarks against Siddaramaiah would bring him commendations. I feel sorry for him. BJP will lose more seats in this election.”

Urban Development Minister Byrathi Suresh opined that all those who speak ill of the community and its leaders shall face political consequences like Pratap Simha. “He shouldn’t have been humiliated like this. May the goddess Chamundeshwari set him right,” he said.
