Suffered mild stroke around six weeks ago, says Zerodha’s Nithin Kamath

February 27, 2024 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Zerodha Co-Founder and CEO Nithin Kamath on Monday disclosed that he suffered a “mild stroke” six weeks ago.

“Around 6 weeks ago, I had a mild stroke out of the blue. Dad passing away, poor sleep, exhaustion, dehydration, and overworking out — any of these could be possible reasons,” he revealed in a post on X.

While disclosing about his health, Kamath said he had noticed his face drooping and struggled with reading and writing. He expects full recovery in 3-6 months.

“I’ve gone from having a big droop in the face and not being able to read or write to having a slight droop but being able to read and write more. From being absent-minded to more present-minded. So, 3 to 6 months for full recovery,” he said.

He further said, “I wondered why a person who’s fit and takes care of himself could be affected. The doctor said you need to know when you need to shift the gears down a bit. Slightly broken, but still getting my treadmill count”.Nithin, along with his brother Nikhil Kamath, founded the discount broking platform Zerodha.

In December 2023, Kamath announced that he was nominated a non-official member of the government’s reconstituted National Start-up Advisory Council (NASC).

The NASC was originally set-up in January 2020 to advise the government on measures needed to build a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation and startups in the country.

Malegaon case: Appear in court from Feb 27 for recording of statements or face action, Thakur told

February 27, 2024 by Nasheman

Mumbai: A special NIA court asked BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur, an accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, to appear before it from Tuesday (February 27) onwards for recording of statements and warned her of “necessary action” if she fails to do so.

Special Judge A K Lahoti passed this direction on February 22 while granting Thakur’s plea for exemption for the day on medical grounds.

Thakur and six others are facing trial in the case under provisions of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and Indian Penal Code (IPC). The National Investigation Agency court is currently recording statements of the accused under the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

In his order, Special Judge Lahoti observed that Thakur and some other accused are not attending the court regularly on the fixed date.

“Time to time, their exemption applications for the reasons put forth by them are also considered by the court. It is observed that some accused are residents of other states and while moving the application they used to mention that they face difficulty in getting tickets at eleventh hour. So, they could not attend the court,” the court said.

However, to overcome the aforesaid difficulty, dates are given in advance to all the accused and, hence, exemption on the same ground will not be considered, the court said. The court considered Thakur’s plea, filed on the ground that she was under medication, for the day.

It, however, directed her to remain present from February 27 onwards “without fail, else, necessary steps will be taken”. Further, the court said all the accused must remain present on the fixed dates given to them till completion of recording of statement.

“Needless to say they (accused) could stay in Mumbai and if there is ill health, they could get medication in Mumbai also,” the court noted.

Six people were killed and over 100 injured when an explosive device strapped on a motorcycle went off near a mosque in Malegaon, a town about 200 km from Mumbai in north Maharashtra, on September 29, 2008. The case was initially probed by the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad before it was transferred to the NIA in 2011. Thakur is BJP MP from Bhopal.

Karnataka govt introduces 20 internal marks for PUC non-practical subjects launches inspection drive

February 26, 2024 by Nasheman

UDUPI: On the lines of CBSE, Karnataka took a decision to allot 20 internal marks for PUC exams in non-practical subjects from the academic year 2023-24. From this year, based on the instructions from the Department of Pre-University Education, committees comprising of a principal and two lecturers are being formed at the district level.

Sources in the department stated that these committees have started visiting PU colleges to check whether assignments for project work have been completed by students and if internal marks have been allotted by lecturers.

Sources said the drive is also to ensure that evaluators at the colleges do not overrate the students by giving marks liberally. During the inspection drive, committee members have been randomly checking answer scripts of students and the marks of the respective students entered in SATS.

Udupi DDPU Maruthi told TNIE that the committee engaged in the inspection work will mainly check whether internal assessment marks have been entered in the SATS as this is the first academic year where question papers with changed pattern are being introduced.

Netanyahu says a cease-fire deal would only delay ‘somewhat’ an Israeli military offensive in Rafah

February 26, 2024 by Nasheman

TEL AVIV: An Israeli military offensive in Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah could be โ€œdelayed somewhatโ€ if a deal is reached for a weekslong cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday, and claimed that total victory in the territory would come within weeks once the offensive begins.

Netanyahu confirmed to CBS that a deal is in the works, with no details. Talks resumed Sunday in Qatar at the specialist level, Egyptโ€™s state-run Al Qahera TV reported, citing an Egyptian official as saying discussions would follow in Cairo with the aim of achieving the cease-fire and release of dozens of hostages held in Gaza as well as Palestinians imprisoned by Israel

Meanwhile, Israel is nearing the approval of plans to expand its offensive against the Hamas militant group to Rafah on the Gaza-Egypt border, where more than half the besieged territory’s population of 2.3 million have sought refuge. Humanitarian groups warn of a catastrophe. Rafah is Gaza’s main entry point for aid. The U.S. and other allies say Israel must avoid harming civilians.

Netanyahu has said he will convene the Cabinet this week to approve operational plans that include the evacuation of civilians to elsewhere in Gaza.

โ€œOnce we begin the Rafah operation, the intense phase of the fighting is weeks away from completion. Not months,” Netanyahu told CBS. โ€œโ€œIf we donโ€™t have a deal, weโ€™ll do it anyway.โ€ He said four of the six remaining Hamas battalions are concentrated in Rafah.

U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan told NBC that President Joe Biden hadn’t been briefed on the Rafah plan. โ€œWe believe that this operation should not go forward until or unless we see (a plan to protect civilians),โ€ Sullivan said.

Early Monday, Netanyahuโ€™s office said the army had presented to the War Cabinet its โ€œoperational planโ€ for Rafah as well as plans to evacuate civilians from the battle zones. It gave no further details.

United Nations agencies and aid groups say the hostilities, the Israeli militaryโ€™s refusal to facilitate deliveries and the breakdown of order inside Gaza make it increasingly difficult to get vital aid to much of the coastal enclave. In some chaotic scenes, crowds of desperate Palestinians have surrounded delivery trucks and stolen the supplies off them.

Heavy fighting continued in parts of northern Gaza, the first target of the offensive, where the destruction is staggering.

โ€œWeโ€™re trapped, unable to move because of the heavy bombardment,” said Gaza City resident Ayman Abu Awad.

He said that starving residents have been forced to eat animal fodder and search for food in demolished buildings. In nearby Jabaliya, market vendor Um Ayad showed off a leafy weed that people pick from the harsh, dry soil and eat.

โ€œWe have to feed the children. They keep screaming they want food. We cannot find food. We donโ€™t know what to do,โ€ she said.

Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner general of the U.N. agency for Palestinians, said it has not been able to deliver food to northern Gaza since Jan. 23, adding on X, formerly Twitter, that โ€œour calls to send food aid have been denied

Israel said that 245 trucks of aid entered Gaza on Sunday โ€” less than half the amount that entered daily before the war.

A senior official from Egypt, which along with Qatar is a mediator between Israel and Hamas, has said the draft cease-fire deal includes the release of up to 40 women and older hostages in return for up to 300 Palestinian prisoners, mostly women, minors and older people.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the negotiations, said the proposed six-week pause in fighting would include allowing hundreds of trucks to bring desperately needed aid into Gaza every day, including the north. He said both sides agreed to continue negotiations during the pause for further releases and a permanent cease-fire.

Negotiators face an unofficial deadline of the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan around March 10, a period that often sees heightened Israeli-Palestinian tensions.

Hamas says it has not been involved in the latest proposal developed by the United States, Egypt and Qatar, but the reported outline largely matches its earlier proposal for the first phase of a truce.

Hamas has said it won’t release all of the remaining hostages until Israel ends its offensive and withdraws its forces from the territory, and is demanding the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, including senior militants. Netanyahu has rejected those conditions.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Sunday made clear that a cease-fire deal for Gaza wouldn’t affect the military’s daily low-level clashes with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, a Hamas ally.

โ€œWe will continue the fire, and we will do so independently from the south,” he said while visiting the Northern Command.

Israel declared war after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel in which militants killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took around 250 hostages. More than 100 hostages were released in a cease-fire deal in November. More than 130 remain in captivity, a fourth of them believed to be dead.

Families have followed the negotiations with hope and anguish.

โ€œIt feels like Schindler’s list. Will he be on the list or not?โ€ Shelly Shem Tov, the mother of Omer, 21, told Israeli Army Radio of his chances of being freed.

Israel’s air and ground offensive has driven around 80% of Gaza’s population from their homes, putting hundreds of thousands at risk of starvation and the spread of disease. The Health Ministry in Hamas-ruled Gaza says 29,692 Palestinians have been killed in the war, two-thirds of them women and children.

The ministry’s death toll doesn’t distinguish between civilians and combatants. Israel says its troops have killed more than 10,000 militants, without providing evidence

The war has devastated Gaza’s health sector. Less than half of hospitals even partially function.

At the Emirates Hospital in Rafah, three to four newborns are placed in each of its 20 incubators, which are designed for just one.

Dr. Amal Ismail said two to three newborns die in a single shift, in part because many families live in tents in rainy, cold weather. Before the war, one or two newborns in incubators there died per month.

โ€œNo matter how much we work with them, it is all wasted,โ€ she said. โ€œHealth conditions in tents are very bad.โ€

Ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas has passed away following a prolonged illness. The news was confirmed in a social media post by his daughter Nayaab Udhas. Reports citing family sources indicate that the Chitthi Ayee Hai and Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein singer breathed his last at a Mumbai hospital around 11 am. The last rites will be held on Tuesday.

The singer’s demise left the music industry shocked and grieving. Condolence messages poured in after the news broke on Monday afternoon, with many expressing their shock and dismay via social media.

Udhas was born in Gujarat to a musically inclined family and enrolled at the Rajkot Sangeet Academy alongside his brothers at a young age. People have seen new India being built in last 10 years: PM Modi at rail infra launch event

February 26, 2024 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: India now dreams big and works day and night to fulfil its dreams, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday as he launched more than 2,000 rail infrastructure projects worth about Rs 41,000 crore.

The third term of his government will begin from June, but the scale and speech with which it has been working have surprised people, Modi said in his video address, taking note of the recent launch of several development projects.

People have seen a new India being built in the last 10 years, he said, underlining the transformation in the railways, including the launch of Vande Bharat trains, an emphasis on cleanliness and electrification of tracks.

In a swipe at previous governments, Modi said his dispensation stopped the loot of public money and every penny earned was used in expanding railway services.

The Indian Railways used to be a victim of politics but it is now the main basis of the ease of travel, he said, asserting that it has also been a big source of employment.

Modi cautioned people, saying the increase in the budget due to the country’s growing economy will not have an impact on the ground if revenue leaks due to scams.

Renovated railway stations are being used to promote local culture and artisans, he added.

The financial losses of the railways used to be a common refrain earlier, but the national transporter is a big force of transformation now, the prime minister said.

“I want to tell youngsters that their dreams are my resolve. Your dreams and hard work and my resolve are a guarantee of Viksit Bharat,” he said.

Several governors and chief ministers, besides hundreds of MPs and MLAs, joined the programme held across the country.
