Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G Parameshwara

Bengaluru: Amid rising incidents of hooliganism under the tag of religion in the state, Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G Parameshwara stated on Thursday that stringent action would be taken against those involved in religious hooliganism. “Strict instructions have been given to the officials of the department to take stringent legal action and the offenders won’t be let go easily,” said Parameshwara addressing the press at his Sadashivnagar residence.

Furthermore, responding to a question about the Congress party’s stand to decline the Ram Temple consecration ceremony invitation, he said, “that the construction work of Ram Temple has not yet completed. Delhi man stabbed by momo seller for asking for more red sauce

January 12, 2024 by Nasheman

New Delhi; A 34-year-old man was hospitalised after being stabbed in the face by a momos vendor during an argument that broke out when he asked for more red sauce in Shahdara’s Farsh Bazar area, police said Thursday.

The customer, Sandeep, was admitted to the Hedgewar Hospital where he is undergoing treatment for serious facial injuries, they said.

According to a police officer, Sandeep stated that he went to purchase momos from a roadside cart on Wednesday evening.

After buying momos, he asked the cart owner, Vikas (22), to give him more red sauce. However, Vikas told him that it was in limited stock.

Soon after, an argument broke out between the two and Vikas allegedly stabbed Sandeep in his face twice, and fled away, the police officer said.

An FIR was registered for attempt to murder and a police team formed to nab Vikas, the officer said.

Vikas was arrested from Farsh Bazar area on Thursday morning, police said.

Police said Sandeep runs a small mobile charger-making unit in Bholanath Nagar in Shahadara.

Case registered against actor Nayanthara, seven others over film ‘Annapoorani’ in Thane district

January 12, 2024 by Nasheman

Thane: The police in Maharashtra’s Thane district have registered a case against eight persons, including actor Nayanthara, over allegations that certain scenes in her newly released film ‘Annapoorani’ have hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus, an official said on Friday.

In his complaint to the Naya Nagar police station, the 48-year-old complainant, a resident of Mira-Bhayander, said the film also promotes ‘love jihad’. The movie has been removed from Netflix.

The station house officer at the Naya Nagar police station said a case was registered on Thursday against eight persons, including the actor and the film’s producer, under Indian Penal Code sections 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups), 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings) and 505 (2) (offence committed in place of worship) read with 34 (common intention).

The Mumbai police had said on Thursday that activists of two right-wing outfits had filed separate complaints against actor Nayanthara and others associated with the film, alleging that certain scenes in it hurt religious sentiments of Hindus.

“A complaint was submitted by the activists of Bajrang Dal to the Oshiwara police station in western suburbs two days ago, and an inquiry in this connection is underway,” an official had said.

A second complaint was filed at the Lokmanya Tilak Marg police station in South Mumbai by Ramesh Solanki, founder of Hindu IT Cell, annother official said. Solanki has alleged that the film demeans Lord Ram and it was intentionally released to hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus.

US, British militaries launch massive retaliatory strike against Iranian-backed houthis in Yemen

January 12, 2024 by Nasheman

Washington (AP): The US and British militaries bombed more than a dozen sites used by the Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen on Thursday, in a massive retaliatory strike using warship- and submarine-launched Tomahawk missiles and fighter jets, US officials said. The military targets included air defence and coastal radar sites, drone and missile storage and launching locations, they said.

President Joe Biden said the strikes were meant to demonstrate that the US and its allies “will not tolerate” the ceaseless attacks on the Red Sea by the rebels. And he said they only made the move after attempts at diplomatic negotiations and careful deliberation.

“These strikes are in direct response to unprecedented Houthi attacks against international maritime vessels in the Red Sea – including the use of anti-ship ballistic missiles for the first time in history,” Biden said in a statement. He noted the attacks endangered U.S. personnel and civilian mariners and jeopardized trade, and he added, “I will not hesitate to direct further measures to protect our people and the free flow of international commerce as necessary.”

Associated Press journalists in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, heard four explosions early Friday local time. Two residents of Hodieda, Amin Ali Saleh and Hani Ahmed, said they heard five strong explosions hitting the western port area of the city, which lies on the Red Sea and is the largest port city controlled by the Houthis. Eyewitnesses who spoke with the AP also said they saw strikes in Taiz and Dhamar, cities south of Sanaa.

The strikes marked the first US military response to what has been a persistent campaign of drone and missile attacks on commercial ships since the start of the Israel-Hamas war. And the coordinated military assault comes just a week after the White House and a host of partner nations issued a final warning to the Houthis to cease the attacks or face potential military action. The officials described the strikes on condition of anonymity to discuss military operations. Members of Congress were briefed earlier Thursday on the strike plans.

The warning appeared to have had at least some short-lived impact, as attacks stopped for several days. On Tuesday, however, the Houthi rebels fired their largest-ever barrage of drones and missiles targeting shipping in the Red Sea, with US and British ships and American fighter jets responding by shooting down 18 drones, two cruise missiles and an anti-ship missile. And on Thursday, the Houthis fired an anti-ship ballistic missile into the Gulf of Aden, which was seen by a commercial ship but did not hit the ship.

In a call with reporters, senior administration and military officials said that after the Tuesday attacks, Biden convened his national security team and was presented with military options for a response. He then directed Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who remains hospitalized with complications from prostate cancer surgery, to carry out the retaliatory strikes.

In a separate statement, U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the Royal Air Force carried out targeted strikes against military facilities used by the Houthis. The Defense Ministry said four fighter jets based in Cyprus took part in the strikes.

Noting the Houthis have carried out a series of dangerous attacks on shipping, he added, “This cannot stand.” He said the U.K. took “limited, necessary and proportionate action in self-defense, alongside the United States with non-operational support from the Netherlands, Canada and Bahrain against targets tied to these attacks, to degrade Houthi military capabilities and protect global shipping.”

The governments of Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand and South Korea joined the U.S. and U.K. in issuing a statement saying that while the aim is to de-escalate tensions and restore stability in the Red Sea, the allies won’t hesitate to defend lives and protect commerce in the critical waterway.

The rebels, who have carried out 27 attacks involving dozens of drones and missiles just since Nov. 19, had warned that any attack by American forces on its sites in Yemen will spark a fierce military response.

A high-ranking Houthi official, Ali al-Qahoum, vowed there would be retaliation. “The battle will be bigger … and beyond the imagination and expectation of the Americans and the British,” he said in a post on X.

Al-Masirah, a Houthi-run satellite news channel, described strikes hitting the Al-Dailami Air Base north of Sanaa, the airport in the port city of the Hodeida, a camp east of Saada, the airport in the city of Taiz and an airport near Hajjah.

The Houthis did not immediately offer any damage or casualty information.

A senior administration official said that while the U.S. expects the strikes will degrade the Houthis’ capabilities, “we would not be surprised to see some sort of response,” although they haven’t seen anything yet. Officials said the U.S. used warplanes based on the Navy aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and Air Force fighter jets, while the Tomahawk missiles were fired from Navy destroyers and a submarine.

The Houthis say their assaults are aimed at stopping Israel’s war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. But their targets increasingly have little or no connection to Israel and imperil a crucial trade route linking Asia and the Middle East with Europe.

Meanwhile, the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution Wednesday that demanded the Houthis immediately cease the attacks and implicitly condemned their weapons supplier, Iran. It was approved by a vote of 11-0 with four abstentions – by Russia, China, Algeria and Mozambique.

Britain’s participation in the strikes underscored the Biden administration’s effort to use a broad international coalition to battle the Houthis, rather than appear to be going it alone. More than 20 nations are already participating in a U.S.-led maritime mission to increase ship protection in the Red Sea.

U.S. officials for weeks had declined to signal when international patience would run out and they would strike back at the Houthis, even as multiple commercial vessels were struck by missiles and drones, prompting companies to look at rerouting their ships.

On Wednesday, however, U.S. officials again warned of consequences.

“I’m not going to telegraph or preview anything that might happen,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters during a stop in Bahrain. He said the U.S. had made clear “that if this continues as it did yesterday, there will be consequences. And I’m going to leave it at that.”

The Biden administration’s reluctance over the past several months to retaliate reflected political sensitivities and stemmed largely from broader worries about upending the shaky truce in Yemen and triggering a wider conflict in the region. The White House wants to preserve the truce and has been wary of taking action in Yemen that could open up another war front.

The impact on international shipping and the escalating attacks, however, triggered the coalition warning, which was signed by the United States, Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

Transit through the Red Sea, from the Suez Canal to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, is a crucial shipping lane for global commerce. About 12% of the world’s trade typically passes through the waterway that separates Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, including oil, natural gas, grain and everything from toys to electronics.

In response to the attacks, the U.S. created a new maritime security mission, dubbed Operation Prosperity Guardian, to increase security in the Red Sea, Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Gulf of Aden, with about 22 countries participating. U.S. warships, and those from other nations, have been routinely sailing back and forth through the narrow strait to provide protection for ships and to deter attacks. The coalition has also ramped up airborne surveillance.

The decision to set up the expanded patrol operation came after three commercial vessels were struck by missiles fired by Houthis in Yemen on Dec. 3.

Congress slams Centre for denying Karnataka tableau in Republic Day parade

January 11, 2024 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Thursday slammed the Centre for denying the state an opportunity to take part in the tableau presentation during the Republic Day parade, saying “This is the Modi mantra of vendetta and vengeance”.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday had hit out at the Centre for denying the state an opportunity to take part in the tableau presentation.

Tagging Siddaramaiah’s post, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “This is the Modi mantra of vendetta and vengeance.”

“He has not forgotten or forgiven the severe drubbing he personally and his party got in May 2023 in the Karnataka assembly elections. He is a small man really,” Ramesh said.

According to Siddaramaiah, the proposals for tableaux included showcasing the life of Mysuru ruler Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, Kittur Rani Chennamma who fought against the British like Rani Lakshmi Bai and Bengaluru founder Nadaprabhu Kempegowda.

“The central government has insulted the seven crore Kannadigas by denying the opportunity for the state’s tableau at the Republic Day parade to be held in New Delhi on January 26,” Siddaramaiah had said on social media platform X.

The Chief Minister had also recalled that Karnataka faced a similar situation last year as well when the state’s tableau was initially rejected but later permitted keeping Karnataka elections in mind.

“This time, the central government has again continued its trend of insulting Kannadigas,” he charged.

Several tableau proposals were sent from Karnataka, but unfortunately, the central government has rejected all these proposals, Siddaramaiah had said.

“It is unfortunate that the MPs of @BJP4Karnataka are not questioning this injustice. They have become puppets of Narendra Modi. To whom are they loyal? Kannadigas or Narendra Modi?” he had said on X.

‘One Nation, One Poll’ panel gets over 5,000 suggestions from public

January 11, 2024 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: The committee on ‘One Nation, One Election’ led by former president Ram Nath Kovind has received over 5,000 suggestions from the public on conducting simultaneous polls. The Centre has set up the panel on September 2 to examine and make recommendations to hold simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, state assemblies and local bodies.

On January 5, the high-level committee issued a notice in mainstream newspapers, inviting suggestions from the public on conducting simultaneous elections by January 15 — via email, on its website, or through post. It said that suggestions are sought for “making appropriate changes in the existing legal administrative framework to enable simultaneous elections in the country.”

Last week, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury wrote to the panel, saying that the proposal of ‘One Nation One Poll’ itself runs against the letter and spirit of the Constitution, which defines the “centrality of the will of the people”.

Terming the plan as “inherently anti-democratic,”  Yechury said that the proposal “negated” the fundamental principles of federalism. The agenda and purpose of the committee was “pre-decided and predestined,” he said. The panel had recently written to political parties seeking their views and an interaction on a “mutually agreed date.”

BJP invites ‘sidelined’ opposition leaders

January 11, 2024 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: In their relentless pursuit of securing more than 350 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is actively exploring the possibility of recruiting seasoned opposition leaders who have been overlooked by their current parties.

Sources within the BJP have revealed that senior party officials and national general secretaries are now tasked with evaluating and welcoming influential opposition figures who express interest in joining BJP ahead of the 2024 polls.

Numerous senior and influential leaders from various opposition parties have been engaging in discussions with BJP office-bearers to forge potential alliances. These discussions are anticipated to materialise, most likely after January 14, coinciding with an auspicious time in the Hindu calendar.

According to sources, several senior leaders, including sitting Members of Parliament from the Congress, Samajwadi Party and JD(U) are in contact with BJP leaders, eagerly awaiting approval to switch sides in January and February.

Recent meetings among senior BJP officials and national general secretaries have been laser-focused on the execution of this strategic decision, should opposition leaders demonstrate the desire and qualifications to join the BJP before the Lok Sabha polls.

Sources confirm that during a recent meeting of national general secretaries, BJP national president JP Nadda entrusted the responsibility of evaluating and facilitating the induction of opposition leaders into the party. A dedicated committee is in the process of formation, charged with this significant task, during both the Lok Sabha elections and assembly elections in multiple states in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

This committee will meticulously assess potential recruits, considering various factors such as their electoral viability, popularity among their constituents, and alignment with influential caste equations, which often hold substantial sway in election outcomes.

Once they join the BJP, the allocation of Lok Sabha or assembly election seats will be contingent on the candidate’s influence in their respective areas. If an opposition leader who joins the BJP is deemed well-suited for a constituency different from their native one or a seat they have previously represented, the BJP may field them, as confirmed by a senior source. Those transitioning from opposition parties to the BJP and possessing the potential to secure seats, particularly in the 160 seats identified as weak, stand a good chance of being considered for candidacy.

The BJP is actively preparing to surpass the previous record of the Congress Party, which won 400 seats in 1984. They have intensified their outreach efforts and election machinery. Meanwhile, there are indications that several opposition MPs and leaders from states like Bihar, UP, Telangana, MP, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand and West Bengal are considering joining the BJP in the coming weeks. Their political backgrounds and potential contributions in the upcoming LS elections are being evaluated by senior leaders within the BJP.

Sources say that BJP’s national general secretary Radha Mohan Das Agrawal has been tasked with overseeing the preparation of the vision document for the 2024 polls, taking into account relevant factors. National general secretary Sunil Bansal is responsible for managing publicity and election campaign-related activities. General secretary Dushyant Kumar Gautam has been assigned to organise conferences for Buddhists in different parts of the country about the Modi government’s work.
