Movie Review: ‘Monster Hunt’ is one of the most endearing and superb movie

January 1, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Monster-Hunt

Producer: Bill Kong, Doris Tse & Yee Chung – Man
Director: Raman Hui
Star Cast: Bai Baihe, Elaine Jin, Jing Boran, Jiang Wu, Eric Sang
Genre: Adventure
Verdict: VERY GOOD

Raman Hui the animator of lovable movies like Shrek, antz and Madagascar fame now makes his feature debut with Monster Hunt, a $40 million live – action / animation hybrid fantasy movie.

Plot: Humans have been at war against monsters for generations, but after the birth of Woba, the last of the monster kings, an effort to bring the two races together begins in right earnest. So when a monster queen gives birth to a cute prince, the child faces an immediate threat from other fantastic creatures and the humans beings too, who hunt them.

Aces: In his debut movie Monster Hunt director Raman Hui has come up with a very endearing fare for people of all ages and from every walks of life. Besides its technical finesse, the movie Monster Hunt also has some smart performances from Chinese actors like Baihe, Elaine Jin, Jing Boran, Jiang Wu, Eric Sang etc.

Minuses: The war oriented plot between monsters of all shapes and sizes and human beings seems highly indigestible. At one point of time the human beings seems more interested in fine dining topped with the choicest wines and then at another point of time they are more interested in a fight to finish warfare with the monsters.

Last Word: Monster Hunt has regaled the Chinese people in a big way and now it is ready to regale the global audiences. So all in all Monster Hunt is certainly a not to be missed fare especially for the children as well as the teenagers. Period!

bigg-boss-underworld

Recently Bigg Boss set the stage for India’s most famous friends – turned – foes – turned -friends Salman Khan & Shah Rukh Khan to publicly bury their hatchet once & forever. Bollywood’s reigning Khans oozed an endearing bromance on the sets of Bigg Boss. But now the buzz is all about the Underworld bigwigs who is keeping eye on Big Boss.

It is quite surprising that recently Anand Chavan got threatened by underworld for extortion after very good news about friends – turned – foes Salman Khan & Shah Rukh Khan becomes friends once again, the bad news was waiting in the list. Anand who is the Casting head of Endemol production house and he is the man behind all the controversial contestants & celebrities on the Bigg Boss show. According to the sources it became very scary for Anand Chavan when he received threatening calls from the Underworld bigwigs. But then Anand Chavan took a step forward rather than getting afraid and filled a complain in Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg Police station Wadala.

According to the most reliable sources Anand Chavan got an extortion call on 8th of Dec, 2015 from a small time gangster named Suresh Puraji, he was later working with fugitive gangster Ravi Puraji. As per the FIR which was registered in Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg Police Station it was stated that Suresh Pujari has demanded Rs 10 crores from Anand Chavan and if he fails to corporate with him then he has to face consequences. Now here comes the funniest punch, after many calls & negotiations later Suresh Pujari’s demand comes down to 1 crore rupees. Then Anand Chavan who got afraid of him replied, that he is a small employee and for him even Rs 1 crore is a huge amount which he can’t afford. After this Suresh Pujari gave him last warning that if Anand Chavan is not able to fulfill his demand then in that case he will gun him down. Anand Chavan then registered the complaint at Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg Police Station and also wrote a letter to Joint Commissioner of Police. However police has now taken this matter very seriously, and after lodging the complain at Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg Police Station Anand Chavan immediately got police protection. The case has been registered under 383, 386, 387 & 504 section of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

However the concerned. Police officials are tight lipped about the whole case by not disclosing any points regarding this case. Anand Chavan too, refused to comment on this sensitive issue.

However, this is not the 1st time when Underworld is getting involved with the entertainment oriented film industry. Even though Bollywood celebrities keep falling into varied controversies. But the most prominent controversy is their connection with Underworld. There are many actors from the film industry who have got threatening calls from the underworld.

The journey of Sadhana from Black & White to Colour era

December 28, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Sadhana

The most popular actress Sadhana breathed her last, at the ripe old age of 74, on this Christmas day (25th Sept, 2015) at 11.30 am in Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai. Her funeral procession had started from her residence in Sangeeta Bungalow, Ram Krishna Mission Road, Santacruz (W), Mumbai and she was then cremated in Mahim Creamatorium. On hearing the news of her sad demise, it was her closest friends Waheeda Rehman, Helen & Shaina N. C. who were the 1st ones to reach her residence to pay their last respects. Incidentally speaking Sadhana was not keeping well for quite sometime. And then there were also rumors doing the rounds that she had tumors too.

Its time now to take a nostalgic trip down memory lane to take a peekaboo at Sadhana’s illustrious & checkered filmic journey from black & white to color era.

Sadhana (Shivdasani) was born on 2nd Sept, 1941 in Karachi, Sindh before partition. Hailing from a Sindhi family she was named as Sadhana after her father’s favorite actress -dancer Sadhana Bose. Her father was also the brother of actor Hari Shivdasani, who also happened to be the father of actress Babita. The Shivdasani family had fled from Karachi during the post partition riots and then settled down in Mumbai. Sadhana’s mother had home schooled her until she was 8 years old after which she studied at Auxilium Convent, Wadala, Mumbai & Jai Hind College, Mumbai.

Right since Sadhana was that high she had always aspired to be an actress. In fact it was her father who had helped her to enter films. So in 1955, when she was just 15 year’s old she played a chorus girl in the song “Mur Mur Ke Na Dekh Mur Mur Ke” in Raj Kapoor’s Shree 420. And then a few years after this chorus girl phase she was approached by some producers who had also seen her act in a college play. So one of the producer had cast her in India’s 1st Sindhi film titled Abaana, this was in the year 1958, where she played the role of Sheila Ramani’s, a top actress of her time, younger sister. And at that time Sadhana was paid a token amount of just 1 rupee.

Next when a photograph of hers, publicizing the Sindhi film, appeared in a movie magazine Screen, Sashadhar Mukherjee, one of Hindi cinema’s major producers at that time, noticed her. She then also joined Sashadhar Mukherjee’s acting school along with her débutante co – star Joy Mukherjee, who was Sashadhar Mukherjee’s son. R. K. Nayyar, who had previously worked as assistant director on a few films, directed Sadhana & Joy Mukherjee’s debut film Love In Shimla. Director R. K. Nayyar had also created her trademark look, called Sadhana cut, inspired from Hollywood actress Audrey Hepburn. The Filmalaya Production banner thus introduced Joy Mukherjee & Sadhana and her iconic hairstyle in their 1960’s romantic film Love In Simla. The film was declared a runaway hit at the box office turnstiles and was also listed in the top 10 films of the year 1960. In this film Sadhana had played the role of a simple, bespectacled girl who is transformed by her grandmother into a beautiful woman and encouraged her to pursue the hero. In the film, Sadhana also wins a beauty contest and is awarded a 3 year film contract with Filmalaya, which was the case in real life too. During this period she had again worked under the same banner opposite Joy Mukherjee in Ek Musafir Ek Haseena.

Alongside Love in Simla, Sadhana was signed by acclaimed director Bimal Roy for his satirical film on Indian democracy, Parakh. She portrayed a simple village girl in this multi -award winning film. In 1961 in another hit Hum Dono Sadhana had played the love interest of Dev Anand. This black & white film was colourized and re – released in 2011. Even some hardcore critics then were of the opinion that Sadhana’s eyes, were very expressive & very captivating, doing most of the work, while she balanced out her submissiveness with a firm tongue. The Mohammed Rafi – Asha Bhosle duet “Abhi Na Jaao Chodkar” still remains evergreen. In 1962, Sadhana was again paired with Dev Anand in Asli Naqli by director Hrishikesh Mukherjee. The same year saw director – screenwriter Raj Khosla cast her once again opposite Joy Mukherjee in his musical film Ek Musafir Ek Hasina. Raj Khosla worked again with Sadhana to make their famous suspense thriller trilogy.

Then in 1963, Sadhana played her 1st role in a technicolour film Mere Mehboob directed by H. S. Rawail. The film proved to be the “Blockbuster” of 1963 and ranked in the top 5 films of the 1960’s. The scene where Rajendra Kumar encounters Sadhana for the 1st time and sees her eyes through her burqa stands as one of the most remarkable scenes of the Hindi film industry. And one of the notable actor Danny Denzongpa had also described the visage of Sadhana in a burqa with just her eyes visible as “unforgettable.”

In 1964 Sadhana played her remarkable double role in the 1st of the suspense thriller trilogy, Woh Kaun Thi?. This white sari clad performance opposite Manoj Kumar earned her, her 1st Filmfare nomination as “Best Actress”. Through this role Sadhana also got to be a part of Lata Mangeshkar – Madan Mohan’s all time classic songs like “Naina Barse” & “Lag Ja Gale”. Once again the hardcore critics called her a show stopper “with an intriguing Mona Lisa – like smile”. This film was a also a box office “Hit”. So much so that Raj Khosla cast her in 2 more mystery films namely Mera Saaya (1966) & Anita (1967) thus making her famous as the “Mystery girl”. Mera Saaya, a box office “Super Hit” courtroom drama film again saw her playing a double role, now opposite Sunil Dutt. The song “Jhumka Gira Re” sung by Asha Bhosle and composed by Madan Mohan saw Sadhana perform dance steps choreographed by Saroj Khan, who was then an assistant to choreographer Sohanlal. The song became so popular that excited audiences in cinema halls used to throw coins at the screen. The film also had the classic songs “Naino Mein Badara Chhaye” and the haunting theme song “Tu Jahan Jahan Chalega, Mera Saaya Saath Hoga”, both voiced by Lata Mangeshkar.

Sadhana got her second Filmfare nomination as “Best Actress” for the role of Meena in Yash Chopra’s directorial saga Waqt (1965). She stood out in Bollywood’s 1st ever ensemble cast by bringing along the fashion of tight chudidar – kurtas, a trend followed by other actresses too. The film proved to be 1965’s “Blockbuster”.

All of a sudden Sadhana started having health issues due to her thyroid, which she got treated at a hospital in Boston. After returning from US, she starred in successful movies like Intaquam (1969), Ek Phool Do Mali (1969) & Geeta Mera Naam (1974), which she also directed. In Intaquam she played the role of a woman who allures the son of her own boss who cheated her to be put behind the bars for a crime he did not commit, for revenge.

After that, she retired from acting as she did not want to be cast as a side actress or do character roles. Later on, Sadhana and her husband R. K. Nayyar, with whom she had tied the knot earlier in her career, formed a production company. She also directed a movie starring Dimple Kapadia in 1989.

Sadhana married her Love In Simla director Ram Krishna Nayyar on 7 Mar, 1966. Their love had blossomed on a film set. But as she was very young then, her parents opposed it. They were married for nearly 30 years, until his death in 1995 from asthma. The couple had no children. Sadhana had also suffered from a disorder of her eyes due to hyperthyroidism. After her retirement, Sadhana had refused to be photographed simply because she wanted to be remembered the way she was. Since then she had lived in Santacruz, Mumbai as a tenant in an apartment building owned by singer Asha Bhosle. In 2013, she stated that she doesn’t keep in touch with her cousin Babita but does keep in touch with actresses Asha Parekh, Waheeda Rehman, Nanda (who passed away in 2014) & Helen.

By the way some of her other noteworthy films were Prem Patra 1962, Man Mauji 1962, Rajkumar 1964, Picnic 1964, Dulha Dulhan 1965, Arzoo 1966, Gaban 1966, Budtameez 1967, Stree (Her one and only one Oriya film) 1969, Sachaai 1969, Ishq Par Zor Nahin 1971, Aap Aye Bahaar Ayee 1972, Dil Daulat Duniya 1973, Hum Sab Chor Hain 1972, Chhote Sarkar 1974, Vandana 1975, Amaanat 1981, Mehfil 1994, Ulfat Ki Nayee Manzeelein et al.

All in all Sadhana, was an Indian actress who was one of the top stars in the 1960’s and the early 1970’s.

But sadly enough, as mentioned earlier, the curtains finally came down on the beautiful & remarkable actress’ life span on 25th Dec, 2015.

Movie Review: ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ still has the force to keep the audiences spellbindingly hooked

December 26, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

STAR WARS THE FORCE AWAKENS

Producers: Bryan Burk, Katheleen Kennedy & J. J. Abrams
Director: J. J. Abrams
Star Cast: Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupito Nyongo’s, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew & Max Van Sydow
Genre: Adventure
Verdict: Good

Director J. J. Abrams, of Star Trek and Mission Impossible fame, has now come on board to direct the latest offering of Star Wars franchise namely Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Which in fact also happens to be the 1st film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

Plot: Almost three decades have elapsed since the destruction of the 2nd Death Star, Luke Skywalkar, the last Jedi, has disappeared. The 1st one has risen from the remains of the fallen Galactic Empire and seeks to eliminate Luke and the Republic. The Resistance, backed by the Republic and led by Luke’s sister, Leia Organa, opposes them while searching for Luke to enlist his aid.

Aces: Star: Wars: The force Awakens is the 7th sequel in the Star Wars franchise. In this sequel, the saga of Luke Skywalker continues and takes the viewers down the nostalgic lane at least for those who have stayed connected with Star Wars since the 1st galactic Star War was unleashed. While the principal actors performance has been consistent, the new ones leave a lot to be desired. Director J. J. Abrams too, lives up to the viewers highly hyped expectations.

Minuses: The million dollar question here is that what more new things can this franchise bring as it has tried and tested every available gimmicks of the galactic forces. The main weakness is that Star Wars: The Force Awakens seems more of a rehashed version of the earlier Star Wars saga. But the best part is that it never drags completely nor does it moves too quickly, thereby keeping the audiences interest sustained.

Last Word: Star Wars: The Force Awakens still has the force to keep the audiences spellbinding and hooked, so much so that it arouses the curiosity level of the new generation too. All in all a good X’MAS gift to spend your weekend with your family.

Given this, a production with only a 6 day shoot but which also involves 12 days of set building can still qualify. H0LLYWOOD STUDIOS READY TO BATTLE FOR 2016 CHINESE FILM SLOTS

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be the 1st Hollywood film to play in China in 2016, with a 9th Jan, 2016 release date. Unusually, it is expected to get an uninterrupted 3 week run. But now that the annual CineAsia convention has ended in Hong Kong, executives from each Hollywood studio will begin campaigning to see which other films will be the winners of the quota sweepstakes. It’s a lucrative contest: China’s theatrical box office was worth $6.3 billion in the 1st 48 weeks of the year, a figure that makes 2014’s $4.9 billion look puny, and yet will almost certainly be dwarfed in 2017. Decisions on which Hollywood films will get berths are made after the studios have each held private screenings for the Film Bureau & state owned distributor China Film Group, and lobbied for the titles they most want to get in to the Middle Kingdom.

But US blockbuster made 2015’s running in Brazil. Disney’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron topped box office charts through late Nov, 2015, per Filme B, hitting 10.1 million tix sales, though Star Wars: The Force Awakens has just punched the biggest Dec, 2015 opening ever in Brazil.

Cocktail Circuit Round Up 2

December 23, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Navin Hangad

Producer Navin Hangad had recently held a bash in a suburban cricket club in Bandra (E), Mumbai, mainly to unveil the 1st look poster and also to showcase the promotional songs of his most ambitious Marathi movie namely F. D. Productions Marathi Tigers. All the actors & the crew members had come for the overcrowded party donning a saffron turban on their heads in lieu with a regular party wear.

The film directed by Avadhoot B. Kadam stars Dr. Amol Kohle as Shiva, Vikram Gokhale as Anna (he was conspicuous by his absence), Ashish Vidyarthi as Lingappa (He is the multilingual Bollywood actor who makes his debut in Marathi Cinema), Vidyadhar Joshi as Channa Shet, Kiran Sharad as Seema, Dr. Tejaa Deokar as Chandram, Vikas Patil as Tamma & Ashwini Ekbote. Also present at the bash were music composer Swapnil H. Digde, singers Avdoot Gupte, Anand Shinde, Jasraj Joshi, Hanmiska Iyer, Neha Rajpal & Astha Tripathi. And of course Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam (He too was conspicuous by his absence). All the songs are chartbusters especially the title track which has already become a rage on the social networking site. By the way the entire cast & the entire crew took to the podium and narrated their individual experiences of being associated with the movie Marathi Tiger.

Incidentally speaking the Marathi Movie namely Marathi Tigers is based on the troubles & the torturers that Marathi people are still facing living in the border areas of Karnataka & Maharashtra. The movie is all about feeling proud to be a Marashtrian. In fact it is also an interesting tale about the bitter sweet fights between the Maharashtrains & the Kannadigas.

The curtains came down on the Marathi Tiger Bash with an arrangement for a Cocktail Dinner function for the media & all the esteemed guests. By the way Marathi Tigers is all set to hit the marquee on 22nd Jan, 2016. Period!!!
