Movie Review: ‘Great Grand Masti’ sans the real masti bores the cine goers to death

July 18, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Great Grand Masti

Banner: Balaji Motion Pictures & Maruti International
Producers: Sameer Nair, Aman Gill, Ashok Thakeria, Sri Adhikari Brothers & Anand Pandit
Director: Indra Kumar
Star Cast: Ritesh Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivdasani, Urvashi Rautela, Pooja Bannerrjee, Mishti, Shraddha Das, Sonali Raut, Kangana Sharma, Usha Nadkarni, Sanjay Mishra, Shreyas Talpade, Sudesh Lehri et al
Music: Sanjeev – Darshan, Shaarib – Toshi & Shaan

Director Indra Kumar’s latest outing Great Grand Masti is a rollicking albeit profusely oriented double entendre comic film, the 3rd installment in the Masti film series after Masti (2004) & Grand Masti (2013). But incidentally speaking the sequel Great Grand Masti does not at all lives up to the expectations bar previously raised by both its prequels namely Masti &
Grand Masti.

The loosely scripted scenario of Great Grand Masti starts off in its usual manner of establishing a premise of 3 sexless marriages. The Masti boys namely, Meet Mehta (Vivek Oberoi), Prem Chawla (Aftab Shivdasani) & Riteish Deshmukh (Amar Saxena) are trying to add some spice to their dead love lives but their attempts are foiled by the kith & kin of their respective wives’ families. Self -proclaimed Godman, Antakshari Baba (Sanjay Mishra) & Amar’s mother – in – law’s (Usha Nadkarni) faith in him is a hindrance for Amar who is on a lookout for some fun with his darling wife Sapna Saxena (Pooja Bannerjee). On the other hand, the childish & immature sister – in -law (Kangna Sharma) of Prem and her clingy nature to her sister & Prem’s wife Nisha Chawla (Shraddha Das) is a menace for Prem. Going ahead, the cross connection or rather the Judwaa experience between Meet’s wife Rekha Mehta (Mishti) and her body builder brother (Ketan Karandhe) makes him stay away from his wife. Prem, a real estate broker by profession, decides to take a break from the mundane life and decides to visit the village, Doodhwadi along with his 2 best friends to get some ‘masti’ under the pretext of selling off the so called haunted & heritage bungalow of Amar. As the trio set out on this crazy journey, they encounter the sexy Shabari (Urvashi Rautela). As the 3 men try to woo her & gain her attention, they realize that this time their Masti is not with a human but with a ghost who is longing for love & lust. As the 3 guys are trapped in the clutches of Shabari aka Ragini, the tale gets even further twisted when the wives of the trio decide to give a surprise to their hubbies.

Director Indra Kumar seems to have made Great Grand Masti only for the rural masses namely the so called front benchers, who relish in such double entendre fare accompanied with their own fully blasted citees & catcalls in the darkened cinema halls. But the film may not go down well with the classy metropolitan cine goers as Great Grand Masti doesn’t at all match up to the comedy quotient of the Masti franchise. Moreover Great Grand Masti also fails to retain the viewers attention span mostly succumbing to its predictability throughout the movie. So all in all Great Grand Masti’s main villian is its faulty & uninteresting script and overall the absolutely hackneyed directorial skills of Indra Kumar as his previously rib ticking directorial attempts in Masti & Grand Masti were absolutely entertaining & hilarious to the core.

Performance wise of course, the trio of Masti boys namely Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi & Aftab Shivdasani have really become proficient in enacting & re-enacting their mastibhara roles 3rd time in a row. Moreover the trio of actor’s namely Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi & Aftab Shivdasani’s comic timing is the probably the only saving grace of Great Grand Masti. Minus the trio of them the movie Great Grand Masti’s overall value is totally ZERO. Amongst the trio of actresses Mishti, Pooja Bannerjee & Shraddha Das also prove to be a big disappointment as they are nothing but glamour dolls displayed in a toy shop window of a shopping mall. That apart the other actress like Sonali Raut & Kangana Sharma too fails to impress, but actors like Shreyas Talpade in a cameo role of Babu Rangeela certainly & strongly makes his presence felt. On the other hand veteran actors like Sudesh Lehri, Sanjay Mishra & above all Usha Nadkarni have given a very interestingly believable account of themselves.

Tail Piece: Great Grand Masti will definitely fail to register any real masti oriented magic at the Box Office turnstiles.

Love Ke Funday is all about the varied love story of Gen X but presented in a different sort of way.” – Indervesh Yogee

July 18, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

indervesh yogee

Indervesh Yogee, the debutant director of Love Ke Funday talks at length about directing his 1st ever realistic new age movie, which he promises will highly appeal to the Gen X of the country.

*So what is your debut directorial movie Love Ke Funday all about?

*Actually speaking Love Ke Funday is all about today’s modern generation and their idea of love. Now trends have changed. Today’s generation is all about the social media interaction on What’s app, Facebook, Twitter et al. It’s a generation of quick love. So the attraction is strong but it is short – lived and with time it almost fizzles out. That apart Love Ke Funday is based in Mumbai and it talks about how people fall in love in this fast paced era.

*Ok! So how different is this love story of Love Ke Funday from the rest of the movie?

*The story & the characters of Love Ke Funday are very real. But Instead of fancy love scenes, the characters meet on the road or the cafeteria or a club. We have added an aspect of human psychological touch to our love story where, for example, you walk in the sun and you see your shadow ahead of you. You cannot catch it so you walk behind it. If you change your direction and walk in the opposite direction then your shadow will follow you. When someone does not give you attention, then that person’s importance increases. As soon as you change your focus, that person feels your importance and walks behind you. Keeping this in mind we have shaped the story of Love Ke Funday.

*Tell us something about the lead characters of Love Ke Funday?

*First & foremost Love Ke Funday has Aryan played by Shaleen Bhanot. His co -character describes him saying he’s done a PHD in talking nonsense but Aryan is more practical than the others. He believes that its not love when 2 people fall for each other in a day; its a mere mutually oriented fatal attraction. He is the flirty kind of a guy and calls every girl by a car’s name according to her features. If some girl is tall he will call her Limousine. If a girl is dusky and a little healthy he will call her Duster. Then there is a 2nd character named Sandy. He is also a flirty guy. We have described him in the movie by saying, there are girls who date him, rate him & wait for him…the ones who have done all this hate him! These characters represent the youth of today.

*Are you aware that Love Ke Funday is already being compared to films like Pyaar Ka Punchnama & Mastizaade?

*Be that as it maybe as per us Love Ke Funday is very different from all the above mentioned films. But one thing is for sure, we haven’t crossed the vulgarity & double entendre (double meaning) line; it’s much less than these films. Love Ke Funday can be called bold; we have bold jokes & punches. But even the bold scenes are shot in a funny way and not in a sexy or vulgar way.

*Love Ke Funday’s producer Faaiz Anwar is a legend when it comes to lyrics. So what kind of songs will be seen in this film?

*Frankly speaking Love Ke Funday’s music is the insurance of the film. So when we started working on it, we 1st got our film insured with the songs! We have some really very good & catchy songs. Mika Singh, Sukhwinder Singh, Javed Ali & Jojo have sung the songs in Love Ke Funday. Mika Singh’s song is simply great and I think it will be a chartbuster. He himself is very excited about the song! Sukhwinder Singh’s song is very good, and he has taken it upon himself to promote the film & the song. I am hoping that it will be the next “Chaiya Chaiya…” The 3rd song is sung by Javed Ali. He is a fantastic singer and our choreographer has given some great dance moves. We shot it in Kashmir in the midst of snow. The title song of the film is written by Faaiz Anwar and we all know he has written excellent songs. It has been sung by Jojo. People will love the songs and listen to them for the next 10 – 15 years.

*As a parting shot tell us what made you guys think of a title like Love Ke Funday?

*To be very honest we all felt that the title has to be attractive and should sound interesting. Moreover, the film is about the fundamentals of love so there couldn’t be a better title than this. This generation uses these fundamentals in the film.

Movie Review: ‘Astu’ is a very heart touching & heart warming story of an old man lost in the concrete jungle of mankind

July 16, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

aSTU

Banner: Gaurika Films
Producers: Sheela Rao & Dr. Mohan Agashe
Directors: Sumitra Bhave & Sunil Sukhtankar

Star Cast: Dr. Mohan Aghase, Amruta Subhash, Milind Soman, Iravati Harshe, Devika Daftar, Nachiket Purnapatre,
Shubhangi Damle, Ila Bhate, Tejas Rao, Aditi Kulkarni – Shweta, Sanghursha Sankad & Dr. Shekhar Kulkani

Music: Dhananjay Kharvindkar & Sanket Kanitkar

The director duo of Sumitra Bhave & Sunil Sukhtankar have given many milestone movies of varied genres in Marathi Cinema. And most of them have bagged National as well as International awards besides garnering critical acclaim & rave reviews galore. Their latest outing Astu, a heart touching & heart warming story of an old man lost in the concrete jungle of mankind, has already achieved the same feat and is still on its way to achieve added crowning glory.

Dr. Chakrapani Shashtri aka Appa (Dr. Mohan Agashe) is an over the hills retired gentleman, acutely suffering from amnesia, living with his daughter Ira Pathak (Iravati Harshe) & Son – in – law Madhav Pathak (Milind Soman) and sometimes also with his grandson Satyavrut (Tejas Rao). Once when Satyavrut is busy with his college exams, Ira brings Appa to stay with her but on the way she stops to shop something for her daughter (Aditi Kulkarni – Shweta) and leaves Appa unattended in her car. Just then Appa sees an elephant named Laxmi on the road and gets down from the car and follows her. Soon enough Appa gets lost in the concrete jungle of mankind and is given shelter by none other than the mahut (Nachiket Purnapatre) of the elephant Laxmi, and
his wife Chanma (Amruta Subhash) who look after him like their own child.

Director duo Sumitra Bhave & Sunil Sukhtankar rightly deserve a standing ovation for bringing such an emotional story for the Maharashtrian as well as the global audiences who were so used to their staple diet of lavanis and tamashas.
Astu teaches a simple basic lesson that our parents, who sacrifice their entire life to take care of us, need equal, in fact, more care & love in their old age stage and more especially when they are suffering from varied ailments and are so helpless to take care of themselves. The well – deserved credit also goes to the behind the scenes team comprising of Milind Jog (cinematographer), Mohit Takalkar (editor), Deviprasad Kharvindkar (lyrics), Dhananjay Kharvindkar & Sanket Kanitkar (music), Santosh Sankhad & Sumitra Bave (art), Vijay Koparkar (Sanskrit singer), Amruta Subhash (Kannad singer) and above all once again Sumitra Bhave (story – screenplay – dialogues).

Performance wise it is naturally Dr. Mohan Agashe who walks away with all the honours. Oh! What a performer he is even at this age & stage. While the rest of the actors comprising of Amruta Subhash, Milind Soman, Iravati Harshe, Devika Daftar, Nachiket Purnapatre,
Shubhangi Damle, Ila Bhate, Tejas Rao, Aditi Kulkarni – Shweta, Sanghursha Sankad & Dr. Shekhar Kulkani have really given off their best histrionics contribution for Astu.

Tail Piece: Go for it guys as films like Astu are rarely made in modern times as almost all fimmakers reel more under the pressure of commercial cinema.

Kabali gets the biggest ever screen count

Initially, the role was offered to Biju Menon and he was really happy to do this. Unfortunately, dates became the villain in the story again. Biju Menon was really busy with his current shooting schedules which made the entry of Anoop Menon in to this project impossible. We all are loving to see such characters from him In this movie, he would be seen in the role of a Panchayath Secretary which has been titled as Pranayopanishath. The film has been penned by P Sindhuraj

Is Trisha & Nayanthara Adopting The Same Love Policy?

Is Trisha & Nayanthara adopting the same love policy? Two of the most charismatic leading ladies of the South Trisha & Nayanthara have withstood heavy competition from much younger girls to stay right at the top for more than a decade. The 2 who are fast friends offscreen seems to have adopted the same policy in recent times. Nayanthara is heading the cast in the new film Dora produced by Sargunam & directed by Dass Ramaswamy. It has been revealed that Nayan is acting without a love interest in the murder mystery film. Similarly Trisha is shooting for Mohini directed by Madhesh and so far a major portion of the horror comedy has been completed but still there is no sign of a hero. We guess that justifies our title

Nani’s Villain Is Andala Rakshasi Actor

Nani’s Villain is Andala Rakshasi actor. After Srinivas Avasarala in Gentleman, it’s the turn of yet another actor to don the mantle of a villain for the 1st time ever, for a Nani film. It’s Naveen Chandra of Andala Rakshasi fame. The news is that Naveen Chandra will play a negative character in Nani’s film with Trinadha Rao Nakkina of Cinema Choopistha Mama fame. The actor is lucky because it not only has a hat trick hero playing the lead role, but it’s also produced by an ace producer – Dil Raju. The actor hasn’t had success at the box office so far, but since his 1st film became popular on television, his stubble face is pretty much familiar. He has since acted in some Tamil movies. His recent releases, namely Tripura & Lacchimdeviki O Lekkundi were big flops.

Starring Santhanam in the lead role, it has Shanaya playing the female lead. Yogi Babu is in another important role. Music is by SS Thaman.

Music is by Santosh Narayanan of Kabali fame. Cinematography is by Sivakumar Vijayan. Art direction is by Santhanam.

Anoop Menon & Mohanlal Duo Are Back Again

Anoop Menon & Mohanlal duo are back Again. After Kanal, Mohanlal & Anoop Menon are all set to rejoin again for an upcoming movie. The movie would be directed by Jibu Jacob. Always opposed terrorism; Ready to face any probe: Dr Zakir Naik

July 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

zakir naik skype

Mumbai: Rejecting allegations that his sermons “inspired” terror activity, physician-turned-preacher Dr Zakir Naik on Friday clarified that he never encouraged anyone to kill innocents and said he will cooperate with any probe agency if it approaches him.

Talking to media persons via Skype from Medinah, Dr Naik, who is facing the heat over allegations that he inspired some of the Dhaka cafe attackers, condemned all terror attacks and called himself as “a messenger of peace”.

“I did not inspire any terrorist… suicide bombings targeting innocent people are condemnable,” Dr. Naik said, adding his statements on terrorism and suicide bombings were “doctored and tampered”.

He said that he has proof to refute all baseless allegations against him.

The Islamic preacher dismissed as “misinformation” that he had ever advocated suicide bombings, saying he always condemned them since innocent people get killed and this is “anti-Islam”.

“However, it (suicide attacks) may be used as a tactic of war to save the country. In all other circumstances where innocents are targeted, it is condemnable.”

The 50-year-old Mumbai-based televangelist, who had earlier cancelled a press conference and had announced his visit to Africa from Saudi Arabia putting off his return to the country, challenged anyone to show him an unedited answer wherein he has not condemned suicide bombings.

Dr Naik also maintained that no government agency has approached him to join investigation in connection with charges levelled against him until now.

“I am willing to cooperate with any probe agency if they approach me,” he added.

He also recalled that he had even addressed IPS officials in the past.

Dr. Naik also stated that he applied for permission to air Peace TV, run by his Islamic Research Foundation, in 2008, but did not get the same as the channel allegedly was “Islamic“.

He also said that terrorists are misguiding innocent Muslims.

Gujarat Boy Hits B – Town With Love Ke Funday

July 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Harshvardhan Joshi

Harshvardhan Joshi’s dreams seem to be coming all true! “Who would’ve thought a law student from Gujarat would come to Mumbai and pursue his Bollywood dreams,” quips Harshvardhan who although moved to Mumbai to study Cyber Law but landed up with his debut Bollywood film Love Ke Funday produced by Faaiz Anwar & Prem Prakash Gupta of FRV Big Business Entertainment Pvt Ltd & Prem Motion Pictures.

“I was always interested in acting and would keep participating in modelling contests and what not. I made it into the Grooming Competition of NIFT and that was the turning point,” states Harshvardhan while further adding, “I then moved to Mumbai and joined this theater group called Karma Kala Manch and worked with Azad Bharti for 3 years. It was during this stint that Director Indervesh Yogee saw me in short stories of Desi Bamboo online YouTube viral network and offered me to audition for the role in Love Ke Funday.”

Moving from theater to films wasn’t that easy a transition for Harshvardhan who says, “I was used to slightly dramatic, theater style acting while for this film my role had to be very subtle. In fact ironically, mine was the most subtle, emotional, one woman man, part. So I had to learn how to underplay.”

Well, if underplay is what gets him the applause so be it because we surely think this Gujarat Boy is here to stay!

“Love Ke Funday is a real rollercoaster ride of entertainment:” Rishank Tiwari

July 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Rishank Tiwari

Rishank Tiwari, the dashing & the debonair dude, hails from Saugor hills in the heart of India, Madhya Pradesh and once he gained an instant limelighted recognition when he had bagged the crowning glory of being singled out as Mr. Madhya Pradesh in 2009. No doubt this crowning glory was a result of his own merit. His next step to stardom was when he bagged a Bollywood movie named Love Ke Funday, produced by lyricist Faaiz Anwar & Prem Prakash Gupta of FRV Big Business Entertainment Pvt Ltd & Prem Motion Movies.

*Hi Rishank tell us how did you make your foray in Bollywood?

*First of all let me start from the beginning I have a big loving family and with a big family comes big expectations. While different members of my family wanted to see me in different professions, I could only choose to become one of them. However, becoming an actor was the only way I could role play everything that my family wanted me to. This was where my love for becoming an actor began. Being a religious person, I started following my passion of acting very religiously! So, acting became my reason for living, it became my religion too.”

*So how did you bag such a lovely role in Love Ke Funday?

*Actually speaking this particular answer also needs a little elaboration. So to begin with let me inform you that I’ve done theatre for 3 and a half years. But like any other upcoming actor, I had to audition for the role of Love Ke Funday. I’m glad that my film makers acknowledged my talent and gave me a break. This is an exciting new beginning for me. I hope as my learning graph in the industry goes up, the entire film industry will accept this ‘small town boy’ wholeheartedly.

*It really sounds strange but debuting in a film is one thing and starring with 2 heroines in a single film Love Ke Funday is a different ball game altogether. What say?

*To be very honest it was indeed very difficult. But I consider myself lucky that I got a chance to act with 2 heroines namely Ritika Gulati & Samiksha Bhatnagar. In fact I am the only hero amongst the 4 of us who got a chance to romance with 2 heroines. That apart I strongly believe that acting is all about drawing inspiration from real life experiences but in the movie I’m shown to be a married guy who has a relationship with another girl outside of marriage! None of this has happened to me in real life but now it happened in reel life which made it all the more difficult to essay the complex yet enjoyable role but as they alway’s say that all’s well that end’s well.”

*Now tell us something about your producer Faiz Anwar, your director Indervesh Yogi and your co – stars Ritika Gulati, Samiksha Bhatnagar, Harshavardhan Joshi & Shaleen Bhanot.

*Faiz Anwaar Sir is not only a reputed lyricist but also a gem of a person as a producer. Inervesh Yogi is a very talented director just watch out for him in his future directorial ventures. I couldn’t have asked for a better producer and director for my debout film and as for the girls Ritika Gulati & Samiksha Bhatnagar they are also debutant actors like me and we have miles & miles to go before we succeed in making a mark in Bollywood and proving our perfect histrinics. But it was fun working with Ritika, Samiksha, Harshavardhan Joshi and a senior actor like Shaleen Bhanot. In fact I woud say that Love Ke Fundey is a real rollercoaster ride of entertainment.

Movie Review: ‘The Legend Of Tarzan’ maybe good enough as a one time watch

July 15, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

The Legend Of Tarzan

Producer: Jerry Weintraub, David Barron, Alan Riche & Tony Ludwig
Director: David Yates
Star Cast: Alexander Skarsgård, Samuel L. Jackson, Margot Robbie, Djimon Hounsou, Jim Broadbent & Christoph Waltz
Music: Rupert Gregson – Williams & Hans Zimmer

Several movies have been crafted on the fictional character of Tarzan, which was originally conceived by popular author Edgar Rice Borroughs, till this date. But of course the latest version namely The Legend Of Tarzan directed by well – known director David Yates does a complete volte face as the legendary character Tarzan no longer resides in the dense jungle as an uneducated beastly character albeit a hunted species. But of late he has shifted & resides in the city. What happens to the Tarzan of the city is well worth watching on the celluloid silver screen at least once.

The original story of Tarzan is about a boy born & raised in the jungles of Africa. So the moment we hear the name Tarzan, we are fast taken back to our childhood when we would hear the story of a young boy who was raised by the beasts of the forest as one of them, until he falls in love with another beautiful girl, who just like him feels more at home in the dense jungles. However, The Legend Of Tarzan is a different story altogether. Unlike the popular story, this film starts off with Tarzan having given up his wild ways for a more peaceful & comfortable life in London as John Clayton III aka Lord Greystoke (Alexander Skarsgard) with his beloved wife Jane (Margot Robbie) at his side. But this time of peacefulness is fast shattered when he is invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of the Parliament, to investigate the activities at a mining encampment. Unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed & revenge, masterminded by the Belgian Captain Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz), Tarzan undertakes the journey putting all at stake.

Director David Yates efforts to change the entire scenario in The Legend Of Tarzan is laudable but the mnillion dollar question is will the modern day version of Tarzan be acceptable to today’s cine goers? Here, it must be pointed out that despite a story that keeps looping from past to present back & forth, director David Yates does well to give each timeline equal importance while simultaneously merging the 2 sans the usual confusion.

Performance wise Alexander Skarsgard as Tarzan is ok but he does fall short of the expectation bar that other past actor have raised who have literally lived the role and done complete justice to it. Margot Robbie as Jane seems to have been completely miscast. Christoph Waltz as Captain Leon Rom is perfect to the hilt. No doubt all the other actors have made their presence felt it is Samuel L Jackson’s character that is totally out of place.

Tail Piece: The Legend Of Tarzan maybe good enough as a one time watch but it fails to live upto the expectation of the Gen Next.
