Brainchild idea of Textiles Minister of Maharashtra Subhash Deshmukh, The 1st 2 Fairs were organized in Solapur in Jan, 2017 & Jan, 2018. Inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Jan, 2018, the Fair witnessed as many as 10000 retailers from across the country visiting it. It was organized in association with the Maharashtra State Government’s Textile Ministry, sponsored by Mafatlal Industries Limited, the market leader & largest producer of corporate uniforms, work wear & school uniform fabric & garments in India & supported by Bank of India as banking partner. The ultimate aim of the fair was to generate 2000 new units in Solapur by the year 2022, in the process making this city the uniform sourcing hub of India & Solapur will soon be seeing a big garment park supported by state textile ministry.
Solapur Garment Manufacturers Association has not only been organizing such Fairs but also has taken the initiative to start a training centre for garment stitching where needy women are trained at no cost. Starting in Jul, 2017 the centre till date has trained 100’s of women who have been given jobs in varied garment factories. Seeing the potential of the Solapur garment industry, Mafatlal Industries started a uniform garment manufacturing unit there.
Solapur is gaining significance for Garment trade; hence to help its promotion & expansion such international level Uniform & Garment Exhibition is being held. The uniform manufacturing industry in Southern India is not organized & generally are supplied to local schools in forms of direct fabric which local retailers & institutions get stitched by local tailors leading to much inconvenience. Due to demand of vendors & dealers to make it more convenient & organized, the fair has been organized in Bangalore which also is very well connected by air to rest of India. Solapur is witnessing higher demand for school uniforms, kids garments, gents & ladies dresses & hence this industry is witnessing good progress in the region.
Solapur is well connected with the rest of the country via the rail and road network with the nearest airports being Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad, and it is considered the next investment destination for the setting up of garment industries in Maharashtra primarily due to the easy availability of transportation, labour & raw materials.
