Bengaluru: Noted film actor Prakash Raj today joined the protest being staged by theatre personality Prasanna against the imposition of GST on handmade products.
Prasanna is on indefinite hunger strike for the last five days demanding total waiver of GST on handmade products, saying it would cause the collapse of the rural economy.
Raj, who spoke to a private news channel from the stage said, “It is unfair to impose GST on the products prepared by a tribe, which lives in forest. He pays GST equal to a multinational company. You are not only economically burdening them but also disturbing the social fabric”, he said.
“You are breaking them morally and rendering them jobless. This is by a government which said ‘Make in India’ and promised creating jobs,” said Raj expressing solidarity with Prasanna’s demand.
“When you see people are suffering because of GST, then it is time to change,” said Raj.
Raj has been vocal against Prime Minister Narendra Modi ever since the murder of noted journalist Gauri Lankesh, who was his family friend. He had flayed Modi for his silence on this issue.
