Lockheed hosts F-16 suppliers’ meet in Bengaluru

October 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Lockheed Martin is hosting a conference in this tech hub for industry suppliers on its flagship fighter F-16 with Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL), said the American aerospace major on Tuesday.

“The four-day meet since Monday is discussing opportunities for the suppliers and prospective Indian partners on the F-16 programme, which has the world’s largest fighter aircraft ecosystem,” said Lockheed in a statement here.

The all-weather single-engine F-16 supersonic multirole fighter, developed originally for the US Air Force by General Dynamics, is in use by air forces in 25 countries the world over.

“The fighter jet offers opportunities for Indian firms and their suppliers’ new business with us, TASL and other industry leaders,” said Lockheed’s strategic and business development Vice-President Vivek Lall in a statement here.

If the fighter is produced in India, it offers the Indian aerospace industry a whopping $165-bilion jet aircraft sustainment market, claimed Lall.

“The conference has provided a platform for Indian industry players to explore opportunities with global suppliers in the F-16 manufacturing ecosystem.

Globally, F-16 industry leading partners include GE, Terma, Honeywell, Fokker, Israeli Aerospace Industries, Elbit, UTC, Terma, Eaton, Moog and Parker.

“The potential F-16 India Project, as a single source globally, will be strategic to build new capabilities in the local defence production. We look forward to participating in the selection process for the fighter programme of the Indian Air Force (IAF),” said Tata Advanced Systems Chief Executive Sukharan Singh at the conference.

As part of its commitment to India, Lockheed has partnered with TASL to produce the fighter’s (F-16) wings at the latter’s aerospace facility in Hyderabad.

“We have offered to produce F-16s in India for the IAF and export customers if the government selects the fighter’s Block 70 version for IAF and agrees to our partnership proposal,” reiterated Lall.

Lockheed’s initiative positions TASL to become the provider of wings for all future customers.

The F-16 block 70 version features advanced avionics, a proven Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, a modernised cockpit, advanced weapons, conformal fuel tanks, an automatic ground collision avoidance system, an advanced engine and extended service life of 12,000 hours.

Though Lockheed sold a record 4,604 F-16s to 28 customers the worldwide over the years, about 3,000 of them are in operation with 25 air forces.

As a Tata Sons subsidiary, TASL provides integrated solutions for aerospace, defence and homeland security.

Maoist terror funding: NIA raids 15 places in Jharkhand, Bengal

October 10, 2018 by Nasheman

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday searched 15 locations in Jharkhand and West Bengal in connection with a probe into the role of some companies allegedly involved in funding of a Maoist outfit Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC), said the agency.

Fifteen teams of the NIA were assisted by the state police forces during the raids it conducted at the residences and offices of managers of different companies in Ranchi, Hazaribagh and Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, and Durgapur in West Bengal.

The companies are associated with purchase and transport of coal in Amrapali and Magadh coalfields in Jharkhand and allegedly involved in providing funds to TPC, an NIA statement said.

The anti-terror agency has also seized huge incriminating materials and documents pertaining to payments made to Amrapali and Magadh area committees, bank account details and fixed deposits, deduction of levy amount, computers, hard discs, mobiles containing accounts of companies, and diaries containing entries of money paid to TPC and Peoples Liberation Front of India during the raids.

The NIA has also seized cash equivalent to Rs 68 lakh, besides 10,000 Singapore dollar and 1,300 USD, besides Rs 86,000 demonetized currency.

The NIA took over the case from Jharkhand Police and registered an FIR on February 16 this year following Home Ministry’s order. The Jharkhand Police had registered an FIR in the case in January 11, 2016.

Nikki Haley, first Indian-American on US cabinet, resigns

October 10, 2018 by Nasheman

Nikki Haley, the first Indian-American to serve on the United States cabinet and the highest profile woman and non-white in the current administration, has resigned her position as the Permanent Representative to the UN, she and President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday.

In the surprise announcement, she said she will leave at the end of the year.

She said that she did not know as yet what she will be doing next, but ruled out a run for president in 2020 saying she would campaign for Trump.

After eight years of public service — two as a governor and two as UN ambassador – she said that she wanted a change after the stressful tenures and that government officials should limit their terms in office so that there are new people coming in.

Trump praised her for her role at the UN saying that she was respected by leaders and diplomats at the UN and that the US is more respected.

He called her a “special friend” and said he hoped to see her back in some capacity in the administration or politics.

The daughter of Sikh immigrants from Amritsar district, Haley had a meteoric rise in Republican politics and was the megaphone of President Donald Trump’s aggressive global policy at the UN often using harsh rhetoric at opponents.

She was the first woman and non-white to be elected governor of South Carolina before she was appointed the UN ambassador — a cabinet post in the US.

Haley is very popular among Republicans. But she was despised by Democrats — especially Indian Americans — who hold that non-white persons should not be in the Republican Party and hold a high government office in Republican Administration.

The resignation of the highest profile woman in Trump’s cabinet less than a month before the mid-term elections roils the political situation just after widespread protests by women’s groups and polarisation over the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of sexual harassment, to the Supreme Court.

Her main achievement was getting China and Russia to stringently adhere to Security Council sanctions on North Korea, which ultimately led to its Kim Jong Un agreeing to negotiate denuclearisation with the US.

Trump praised her role on North Korea, which led to his diplomatic coup.

She also backed the moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, which led to the virtual isolation of Washington at the UN, with even allies abandoning it.

She also backed cutting US aid to the UN agency for Palestinians.

In addition, she was behind the US pulling out of the UN Human Rights Council because, she said, it included several human rights violators.

Despite promoting the Trump’s policies, she also had differences with him, pursuing a far more aggressive policy towards Russia than Trump does.

While Rex Tillerson was the Secretary of State, she had a higher profile, which dimmed somewhat after Michael Pompeo took the job and assumed a more public role.

She was also hemmed in by National Security Adviser John Bolton, a former US Permanent Representative, with his own foreign policy agenda that was sometimes at odd with Pompeo on North Korea and Russia.

Haley had been a critic of Trump during the campaign for Republican Party nomination for president in 2016 and supported Marco Rubio. But after Trump won the nomination, she supported for him.

She acknowledged that she had differences with Trump while at the UN but could air her views with him.

In an op-ed in The Washington Post, she wrote, “I don’t agree with the president on everything. When there is disagreement, there is a right way and a wrong way to address it. I pick up the phone and call him or meet with him in person.”

After her departure, among the high-ranking Trump administration officials are Ajit Pai, the Federal Communications Commission Chairperson, and Seema Verma, the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Neither are at cabinet level.

Facebook unveils smart video chat speakers for home

October 9, 2018 by Nasheman

Taking on Amazon and Google in the smart home space, Facebook has unveiled a pair of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered smart video chat devices, Portal and Portal +, which are designed to connect people and feel like being in the same room.

Facebook on Monday said the new video communication speakers with tablet-size screens for the home can dramatically change the way people keep in touch and their built-in AI technology makes video calling easier and more like hanging out.

“With a 10-inch 1280 x 800 display, Portal from Facebook improves video calling and lets you enjoy quality time with family and friends. You can also opt for a 15-inch 1920 x 1080 pivoting display with Portal+,” Facebook said in a statement.

Portal and Portal+ are available now for pre-order in the US and will begin shipping in November.

Portal home comes for $199 and Portal+ will cost $349.

“You can also receive $100 off any two devices — this means a bundle of two Portal devices will be priced at $298,” Facebook added.

The video chat speakers come with Smart Camera and Smart Sound technology.

Smart Camera stays with the action and automatically pans and zooms to keep everyone in view.

Smart Sound minimises background noise and enhances the voice of whoever is talking, no matter where they move.

“You can call Facebook friends and connections on Messenger even if they don’t have Portal. Calls can be made to and from Messenger-enabled smartphones and tablets. Portal supports group calls of up to seven people at the same time,” said the social media platform.

Portal offers hands-free voice control. You can start a video call simply by saying ‘Hey Portal’ and noting who you’d like to call.

Portal also comes with Amazon Alexa built in.

Portal and Portal+ also come with a camera cover, so users can block camera’s lens at any time and still receive incoming calls and notifications, including using voice commands.

“To manage Portal access within your home, you can set a four- to 12-digit passcode to keep the screen locked. Changing the passcode requires your Facebook password,” the statement said.

When people are not on a call, Portal’s “Superframe” can display favourite photos and videos and important notifications like birthday reminders.
