Complaint booked against Man gives ‘triple talaq’ to wife via WhatsApp.

October 18, 2018 by Nasheman

A 26-year-old Muslim man in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra allegedly gave triple talaq to his wife through WhatsApp, and was booked following a complaint lodged by her, police said Thursday.

The man, Javed Saber Pathan, a resident of Khandala village in Vaijapur taluka in the district, was booked on Wednesday under section 4 of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance, 2018, a police officer said.

“Javed had married Shabana Nisar Shaikh alias Sabha in December 2016. Things were fine between them for about a year. However, after that they regularly started arguing over small issues,” police inspector Anant Kulkarni said.

“On September 9 (2018), Javed dropped Shabana at her maternal aunt’s house in Kannad tehsil (in the district), but did not return to take her back. Shabana’s parents visited his house to request him to patch up with her. But on September 23, Javed sent a triple talaq message on her WhatsApp,” he added.

Shabana lodged a complaint against him with Vaijapur police station on Wednesday, following which a case was registered, Kulkarni said.

Javed was yet to be arrested, the inspector said adding that an investigation has been launched into the case. On 28 December 2017, the Lok Sabha had passed The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017.

The bill made instant triple talaq (talaq-e-biddah) in any form spoken, in writing or by electronic means such as email, SMS and WhatsApp illegal and void, with up to three years in jail for the husband.

The Union cabinet last month approved an ordinance making triple talaq a punishable offence.

October 17, 2018 by Nasheman

An argument over Rs 10 resulted in a hair salon owner stabbing his friend to death using a pair of scissors here, police said Saturday.

Police said the incident took place on Friday evening, when Prempal Gangwar (42) went to his friend’s Ahibaran Lal’s saloon for a haircut. They had an argument over Rs 10.

Initially, people perceived it as a friendly fight between both of them, as they knew each other for the last 20 years, they said.

But, moments later Prempal slapped Ahibaran, after which Ahibaran stabbed Prempal’s chest with a pair of scissors. Prempal was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

Ahibaran also attacked sons of Prempal (Lakhan and Vipin) who came to their father’s rescue, and subsequently fled from the spot.

Station officer of Bhuta police station, Surendra Kumar Singh said the body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and a case has been registered against Ahibaran.

#Me too : 20 Women Journalists and Support Priya Ramani, Against MJ Akbar

October 17, 2018 by Nasheman

As the #MeToo movement gains ground, 19 women journalists who have worked with ‘The Asian Age’ newspaper, came out in support of their colleague Priya Ramani who has accused union minister MJ Akbar of sexual harassment, a joint statement issued by them said.

The journalists have urged the court to hear their testimonies against MJ Akbar, claiming that some of them suffered sexual harassment by the minister and others have been a witness to it.

“Ramani is not alone in her fight. We would request the honourable court hearing the defamation case to also consider the testimonies of sexual harassment of some of us at the hands of the petitioner, as also of the other signatories who bore witness to this harassment,” the journalists said in the joint statement undersigned by them.

Meenal Baghel who worked for Asian Age (1993 to 1996), Manisha Pande (1993-1998), Tushita Patel (1993-2000), Kanika Gahlaut (1995-1998), Suparna Sharma (1993-1996), Ramola Talwar Badam (1994-1995), Hoihnu Hauzel (1999-2000), Aisha Khan (1995-1998) and Kushalrani Gulab (1993-1997) have signed the statement.

Kaniza Gazari (Asian Age 1995-1997), Malavika Banerjee (1995-1998), AT Jayanthi (1995-1996), Hamida Parkar (1996-1999), Jonali Buragohain, Meenakshi Kumar (1996-2000), Sujata Dutta Sachdeva (1999-2000), Reshmi Chakraborty (1996-98), Kiran Manral (1993-96) and Sanjari Chatterjee are the other journalists to sign the statement.

One journalist from Deccan Chronicle, Christina Francis (2005-2011), also signed the statement.

“What Akbar has demonstrated through his legal actions is his refusal to introspect, acknowledge or atone for his actions that have caused immense pain and indeed harm to many women over the years.

“He himself, in the meanwhile, continues to enjoy enormous power and privilege as minister and Member of Parliament,” the statement said.

“When Ramani spoke out against him in public, she spoke not only about her personal experience, but also lifted the lid on the culture of ‘casual misogyny, entitlement and sexual predation’ that Akbar engendered and presided over at The Asian Age,” it said.

Many journalists from multiple media platforms have come forward with their stories of harassment against the Minister of State for External Affairs under the social media campaign ‘#MeToo’ against sexual misconduct.

MJ Akbar, however, has denied the allegations and on Monday filed a private criminal defamation complaint against Ms Ramani.

Hours after returning from a trip to Africa, the union minister issued a statement trashing the charges against him, saying accusations without evidence has become a “viral fever” among some sections.

Ms Ramani on Monday asserted that she was ready to fight the defamation complaint filed against her, and expressed disappointment over the minister’s statement, saying it paid no heed to the “trauma and fear of the survivors”.

“I am ready to fight the allegations of defamation laid against me as truth and the absolute truth is my only defence,” she had said.

Priya Ramani ready to face Akbar, his 97 lawyers; hearing on October 18 : #Me too

October 16, 2018 by Nasheman

Delhi’s Patiala House court has listed the matter of Union minister MJ Akbar to 18 October. He had filed a criminal defamation case in the court against journalist Priya Ramani yesterday.

“My wife faces a union minister, his 97 lawyers. It takes special courage to do that. My wife Priya [Ramani] is amongst the 14 women journalists who have named union minister MJ Akbar for a range of inappropriate workplace behaviour,” wrote her husband Samar Halarnkar, in his column.

On Monday Union Minister MJ Akbar filed a private criminal defamation complaint in a court in Delhi against journalist Priya Ramani, who has accused him of sexual misconduct around 20 years ago, alleging she “wilfully” and “maliciously” made imputations against him with the ulterior motive of maligning his reputation and political standing.
The minister of state for external affairs filed the plea in the Patiala House district courts through law firm Karanjawala & Co and the ‘vakalatnama’ names 97 lawyers, who have been authorised by Akbar to represent him.

Ramani said in a statement that she is ready to fight the defamation allegations. She alleged that “rather than engage with the serious allegations that many women have made against him, he (Akbar) seeks to silence them through intimidation and harassment”.

Priya Ramani is the torch-bearer of the Indian episode of the #MeToo campaign. She spoke out against the minister of state and then all hell broke loose. Many skeletons started tumbling from cupboards and many dark secrets came to light, related to the film industry and in media as well as other fields. Within days a movement of sorts started with each day witnessing horrific tales of sexual harassment and exploitation.

Married man commits suicide for sexual Harrsement by co-worker’s

October 16, 2018 by Nasheman

Frustrated by a woman’s never-ending demand for sex, a 38-year-old man from Parbhani district of Maharashtra ended his life. The man was identified as Sachin Mitkari and worked at a hospital along with the woman.

On Monday, the police said that the man was found hanging from the ceiling at his residence situated on Vasmat-Parbhani road on Sunday. It was the neighbours who reportedly found him hanging and called on the police. His body was then sent for autopsy by the cops.

Mitkari penned down a suicide note which was recovered from the spot by the police. The note said that the woman had been harassing him and insisting him to have a sexual relationship with her.

Despite being told by Mitkari the fact that he was married, the woman continued to chase him so that she could indulge in a sexual relationship with him.

She allegedly also used to threaten and blackmail him that she would file a criminal case against him, said a police official quoting the suicide note. A case of abetment to suicide was registered against him by the police, as per what the official told news reporting agency PTI. Further investigation into the matter is reportedly underway.

This incident clearly tells us the impact sexual harassment can have on one’s life as this news has come in amid the #MeToo movement currently going on in India wherein different women are coming up with their ordeals and accounts of harassment, especially at their places of work.

This man should have gone on to publicise the said woman’s deeds, gaining inspiration from the many Me Too survivors. This could have saved his life and it is a clear indication that men should also join the campaign by voicing out their stories of harassment on social media.

Akbar files defamation case against woman journalist

October 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Union Minister M.J. Akbar on Monday filed a criminal defamation complaint against a journalist, Priya Ramani, who had accused him of sexual harassment.

Akbar has been accused of sexual harassment by several women journalists who had worked with him. He has denied the charges as “false, wild and baseless”.

Akbar’s complaint was filed in the Patiala House court complex.

Akbar has sought Ramani’s prosecution under Section 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code.

He alleged that Ramani wilfully, deliberately, intentionally and maliciously defamed him by making a completely false and frivolous statement which has harmed his goodwill and reputation within the political fraternity, media, friends, family, colleagues and society at large.

“That the scandalous allegations leveled by the accused against the complainant (Akbar) herein, by their very tone and tenor, are ex facie defamatory and have not only damaged the goodwill and reputation of the complainant, in his social circles and on the political stage, established after years of toil and hard work, but have also affected the personal reputation of the complainant in the community, friends, family and colleagues, thereby causing him irreparable loss and tremendous distress,” said the complaint filed by advocate Sandeep Kapur.

School principal stabbed to death in front of students

October 15, 2018 by Nasheman

On Sunday morning, Class 10 students of the Havanur Public School in Bengaluru went to attend a class. What they did not expect was to watch their teacher get brutally murdered.

Ranganath (56), the Principal of the school located near Magadi Road, had instructed the students to attend school on Sunday for special class.

At around 11 am, a group of five men barged into the school. Despite several attempts by the security guard to stop them, the gang of men allegedly pushed aside the security guard and went in.

“The five men entered the classroom in which Ranganath was teaching and began stabbing him. He died on the spot, before help could arrive,” the Magadi Road Police told media.

The horrified students began screaming loudly and this alerted passers-by, who went in to see what was going on.

“By the time the people came to see what happened, the men had fled the spot,” the police added.

The people who went into the classroom saw Ranganath bleeding and the students crying. “The students have been petrified by the incident. We have taken down the statements of the people who were there. We will get the statements of the students once they are out of shock and recovered,” the police added.

The CCTV camera installed near the school gate has allegedly captured footage of the men barging in through the school gate. The police say that they are in pursuit of the accused and will track them down within a few hours.

“We have the images of the men from the cameras. Our team is in the process of arresting them. We have registered a case of murder against unidentified persons currently. Their names will be added once we nab them. We suspect that the issue was personal. So far, the suspicion is that the principal had an affair with someone and that the killing was one of revenge. We have taken down the statement of the family members and are pursuing it,” the police said.

Mumbai police arrested Four persons for assaulting TV journalist in Mumbai

October 15, 2018 by Nasheman

Four persons have been arrested for allegedly assaulting a television journalist near his house in south Mumbai, police said Monday.

The accused, all city residents aged between 20 and 25 years, were nabbed late Sunday night from Tardeo area, a senior police official said.

Herman Gomes, working with a private TV channel, was returning home along with a friend in a taxi on Sunday when he saw four to six men waiting near his house in Gamdevi area.

The men started abusing Gomes and later allegedly assaulted him and also hit his friend, as per the victim. Gomes was injured in the attack and later received six stitches near his eyes.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone-II) Dnyaneshwar Chavan, said prima facie it appears the incident might have taken place in the heat of the moment following some argument. “However, we are trying to go into the depth of the matter,” he said, adding, the accused do not have any criminal background.

Based on Gomes’ complaint, the Gamdevi Police had registered a case under IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 324 (voluntary causing hurt by dangerous weapons) and other relevant provisions. Journalists’ associations in the city had Sunday condemned the attack and alleged that police did not file the victim’s complaint promptly.

The Mumbai Press Club termed the attack on Gomes a “dastardly act”. An association of crime reporters in the city have urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take action against police officers who allegedly delayed registration of the First Information Report (FIR) in the matter.

Minister of State for Home (urban), Ranjit Patil had later said an investigation was on into the incident and “correct steps will be taken in the direction”.
